STRUCTURAL LIGHTING JM
Designer Statement
I am a creative designer and embroiderer who loves to explore the way that stitch is used and push the boundaries of embroidery and surface deisgn. I am inspired by many things including nature, microscopic details, architectural structures and the contrast of light and shadow. I enjoy using a range of different embroidery techniques within my work including hand stitch, free machine embroidery, digital embroidery and laser cutting whilst being experimental with my fabric choices. STRUCTURAL LIGHTING
The inspiration from this project initially came from the S/S 17 trend ‘Pause’ which made the designer think about places away from the busyness of life where people go to pause and reflect. Southwell Minster, situated in the middle of the busy market town, for many people acts as an oasis of calmness and a place to pause. The stunning architecture formed the basis for this project in which the shapes were used to inspire this structural collection. Experimenting with a range of different materials the designer developed a collection of lighting for part of the Minster cathedral. The lighting was designed to enhance the architecture whilst introducing colour and textiles to an otherwise fairly minimilist and cold interior. Colours were taken from the stained glass windows to create bespoke samples to reflect the uniqueness of this impressive building. This collection introduces textiles in a contemporary way in which people will stop and pause when the lighting is viewed.
