Bringing Nature Indoors
Brining Nature Indoors Through previous years at University and time spent in industry, I have developed my specific interests within textiles and craft. I am attracted to working with natural fibres and applying traditional techniques and craftsmanship as I believe this way of working is preferable to the methods adopted in mass manufacturing. I feel that it is partly my responsibility, as a craft practitioner, to be aware of the problems the craft industry is facing and to consider whether it is possible to address and overcome some of these challenges in my practice.
This project focuses specifically on the use of natural fibres. It experiments with the properties and textures of the fibres to create a rustic cloth, but also explores how they can be used to create feasible and attractive designs. The cloth has an eclectic mix of textures which are appealing to touch, but does not place as much emphasis on the visual aesthetic appeal. An experimental approach has been used by different weights of yarns being mixed together. Commonly used yarns such as wool, linen and cotton are a part of this collection, and less conventional fibres, such as jute and rope have been added. This project explores and promotes the use of natural materials to highlight to others the value of considering the material choice.
