A Long String of Vowels HOWIE GOOD We won’t really know what happened on that Sunday until we know why it happened: houses under water, sailors hanged from cell phone towers, shadows rolling in and rolling out like waves. In one version of the story, the birds remained upright all night, monstrous leaves convulsing around them. In a later version, strict rules governed who could touch blood.
