PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
SOCIAL COMMITTEE NEWS
Congratulations to all the winners in the Club Championship! Great weather and close competition contributed to its success. Looking forward we would like to make the event even stronger and better and welcome your suggestions to increase the participation.
We would like to draw your attention to our OKTOBERFEST flyer included in this newsletter issue. Due to recent changes in the club’s catering services, our governing board has decided that large social events such as ours, which include dinner will now be provided by outside catering businesses.
On August 18, Gene Collet, Lloyd Hightower, Dan Fryer, Kevin Estes, and Tyler Sweet participated in the Evans Cup. The tournament was held at the Meridian Valley Country Club. Our team finished in 10th place at 19 under par. Tyler was the overall low pro at 2 under par. Good job to all the team members. There are a lot of activities taking place behind the scenes at the Club driven by dedicated and creative committee members. In their newsletter articles you get a view of the changes taking at SunLand. The House Committee will describe the overhaul that is happening with our food and catering offerings. The Club Improvement Contribution Committee will describe what they are working on and the vision of the initial improvements. The membership committee is working on a number of projects to increase membership and to get a better understanding of what is important to our current members. I want to thank all who have been working so hard on the different projects. The time commitment and dedication is truly remarkable. All the Board Members, Committee Members, and Volunteers have one goal and that is to make the SunLand experience the best on the Peninsula. Best Regards, John Schmerler, President
ATTENTION! BINGO Tuesday, October 14 at 11:30 AM Sign-up on Social Bulletin Board in September
So the hunt was on and we are very excited to announce that we have secured the services of Chef Thomas Heintz, the owner of the soon to open German Delicatessen, which is aptly named The Sauer Kraut, located in the new business plaza on the corner of Sequim Ave and Old Olympic Highway behind Java Joes. Chef Heintz lived in Germany for many years and teaches a culinary class at Peninsula College. We are in the process of selecting a menu from his many delectable offerings, all of which we are convinced will please your palate. Watch for our sign up flyer, which will be posted on the social bulletin board in the clubhouse on September 19 for the menu and price. This event, scheduled for Saturday, October 18, will once again feature our very unique Bavarian Bingo. Not only will there be prizes, but chief bingo caller Dell Ferris will once again provide us with some very interesting brief historical facts about the real OKTOBERFEST and the country from which it originates between the games. And just a reminder that we have secured the services of Savoy Knights, a very popular local band, to provide dancing music for our Christmas Dinner Dance scheduled for Friday, December 12, so mark your calendars now. And, last but not least, we are so delighted to welcome three new social committee members to our creative little group. They are Dianna Erganbright, Pat Nielsen, and Roberta Markes. These ladies pitched right in as we decorated for our Crab Fest and have already brought new ideas for our remaining events in 2008. Our door is always open for any ladies who would enjoy planning and decorating for more great events in 2009. Call Monica Ostrom for a very convincing sales pitch at 681-5274. SUNLAND WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE The members of the Membership Committee are Marsha Carr, Julie Hightower, Bonney Benson, Eileen Romano and Bill Wheeler. As you know the new Membership Reward program was introduced in the August newsletter. Each time a new golf member says you referred them to SunLand, a 10% reduction is applied to your 2009 dues. If it is a social membership, you receive a gift certificate for the SunLand Café. The best part - these new members will enjoy all that SunLand has to offer. A key point of this committee’s mission is to “enhance the value to current members”. We have several plans in the works; be sure to watch for a special meeting especially for Social and “non-golfing” members. If you have any questions or suggestions for obtaining new members, please speak to a committee member, or email us at sunlandmembership@gmail.com. Mary Jo LeSage, Chairperson
GOLF COMMITTEE “A leisurely round (of golf) with a close friend on a summer’s evening comes close to the best of all human experiences.” W. F. Deedes I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Alex Skinner who is working toward receiving an Evans Scholar Foundation scholarship. Alex moved to Sequim 5½ years ago after living in Egypt and Thailand. He is a junior at Sequim High School taking AP classes and maintains a 3.75 GPA. His interest in sports finds him on the high school tennis team in the fall, captain of the swim team in the winter, and spring on the golf team. His college aspiration is to earn a degree in Computer Science.
Our second Annual Ladies’ Guest Day was even better than last year. We had more sponsors this year and great gifts from downtown merchants. We would like to give a special thank you to the men’s club for their help and their sponsoring our continental breakfast and hole # One. The ProShop and the catering staff did an outstanding job, thank you very much. We had some sunshine and no rain, which made the day a great success. I would like to thank my SWGA board and MJ Anderson for all their hard work on this project, well done Ladies’. Winners were Linda Beatty & Dolly Burnett for low gross, Judy Nordyke, and Sandy Sunich for low net. I received quite a bit of fed back from the members and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time. The weather also cooperated with us this year for the Championship it was great to have some nice weather for a change. It was fun to come in each day and see how we were doing up on the scoreboard, some people did not like having everyone else know what they shot, but they were good sports about it. I would like to congratulate all the winners, especially the overall winners; Linda Beatty for low gross and Marie White for low net. Since the winners were unable to jump into the lake on, 12 we soaked Linda Beatty and the niners’ winner Stephanie Johnson with the hose. Marie White was not able to be at the Championship party so she missed getting wet. We still have not finished the Captain’s Cup, so I will keep you updated as we get to our completion. Remember ladies the War of the Roses is coming up again September 5 & 6, be sure you are signed up for a fun couple of days of golf against the men. It promises to be fun especially since the men are defending their win from last year.
Alex has done a superb job caddying for many of our SunLand Golf members this summer. He has 25 more rounds of golf left to complete this summer. You may sign up for the caddying experience with Alex in the Pro Shop. Let’s show our support for another very deserving recipient of an Evans Scholarship.
Coming up in September is Least Putts, September 4; Partner’s Eclectic Round 1 September 11 and Partner’s Eclectic Round 2 September 18, with a No Host Luncheon after round 2; and Medal Play on September 25. We have a busy month of September, so be sure to sign up early for tournaments on the board outside the ProShop.
Enjoy the many golfing activities during the month of September. You’ll have many stories to share after golfing in the War of the Roses. Summer is not quite over, so get out and enjoy our great golf course, golfing friends, and golfing opportunities.
My term as Captain is starting to wind down and I would like to thank everyone for all your help and encouragement during my tenor. See you around the clubhouse and on the course.

CLUB IMPROVEMENTS CONTRIBUTIONS COMMITTEE The Board of Directors at the last annual meeting presented a list of expenditures totaling over $250,000.00 that would greatly enhance the SunLand membership experience, but fall outside the dues-based operating budget for 2008. Not only would existing golf and social members benefit from such improvements, but a more attractive club atmosphere would go a long way in attracting new members which are essential to our long-term viability as a private club. The Club Improvements Contributions Committee, whose members are listed below, have identified the following areas of improvement that would be addressed with the initial donations made by our golf and social members. Refurnishing and updating the members lounge and the main entrance hallway and the hallway to the ProShop. Refurbishment of the six on course restrooms, including new fixtures, floor covering and painting. Purchase of a course blower, which will significantly reduce maintenance costs. The Committee estimates the cost of these initial improvements to be approximately $85,000.00. So for example, if every golf and social member donated $300.00 we could accomplish all these improvements. We realize it may not be possible for everyone to donate that amount and some members will want to donate more, but if every member will donate what they can on this initial fund raising we will accomplish as much as possible at this time. This ongoing committee will work on continuing fund raising efforts for the next few years to try to accomplish additional improvements to our club. A full membership lessens the burden of dues on the current membership. We promise to keep in constant touch with the members regarding funds coming in, projects being planned and in progress, and to utilize our volunteers wherever possible, and to make our club as attractive and desirable as possible. All contributed funds will be used for improvement projects and will not go to the general funds of the club. We believe each one of our club members CAN make a difference. We need volunteer help as much as donations. Painting, plumbing, organizing, scraping and general labor is what our club does best. Please consider volunteering to help make this club the very best on the Peninsula and the best in western Washington. Questions may be addressed to any of the following committee members. The Men’s Club would like to congratulate the winners of the Club Championship held in August. The event was a great success thanks to Bill Dickin and his Committee. War of the Roses Mens Mixer - 9:00 AM Shotgun Mens Fall Field Day & Annual Dinner Meeting
Speaking of the Annual Meeting we are in need of one more member to step up and serve us next year as a Board member. Agreeing to put their names in nomination so far are Ray Aldrich and Jim Jones, and a big thank you to both! This is a great way to not only serve the members but also to make an impact by participating and being involved. Our Board is a fun, involved group and you all will be valuable members of the team. That man out there should contact any Board member or Tyler. This year has certainly passed by fast and the uncertain weather made it even more so. I hope you have been enjoying our beautiful golf course and remember to keep it that way with true golf course etiquette; in the way we repair our marks and divots and in the way we record our scores.

LADY NINERS Whew, what a month we just had. Our HORSE RACE & BASH was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances and we are unable to reschedule a date this year. So this event will have to wait until 2009. The CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP week gave the NINERS two winners. For the first time ever we presented a low gross and low net trophy. Congratulations to NANCY PHELPS for the low net and to STEPHANIE JOHNSON for the low gross. The daily low net winners were GWYEN BOGER, NANCY PHELPS & STEPHANIE JOHNSON.
A big THANK YOU to SABRA DeROCHA & KAREN POSTMA for the delicious luncheon on FIELD DAY and to NANCY MARTIN for coordinating with the ProShop staff on setting up the course. The winners for the weekly game were PAT CAPOUCH 1st, CHRISTIE WILSON 2nd & MARY BUSCH 3rd. Closest to the line went to MARGARET COX, closest to the pin to CHRISTIE WILSON & longest drive to DORENE BERARD. Congratulations to each of you. A good time was had by all. Our nominating committee will have the slate for the 2009 officers posted on the bulletin board September 9. Gwyen Boger, Captain

HOUSE COMMITTEE Greetings fellow SunLand Golf & Country Club members. Changes continue to come fast and furious around the clubhouse these days, I will endeavour to list the most important, or at least those currently coming to mind. Please welcome our new Cafe Manager, Alicia Martin. Alicia has joined our staff to oversee the Cafe operations. Alicia is a Sequim resident and comes to us from a long background in restaurant and food management. She recently worked in Sequim senior care facilities and was the Catering Manager for Bella Italia in Port Angeles. Alicia is committed to making the SunLand Golf & Country Club Cafe a pleasant and welcoming experience. Please stop by to introduce yourself and say hello. The most dramatic change is a decision by the Board of Directors to end our two year trial period of having an in-house catering staff serve and promote large outside events, such as weddings, reunions and other non-member events. I am sure there will some confusion about just what this means to our members, I will attempt to clarify our intentions. The Club has struggled to realize our original intent of promoting as many non-member outside events as the Club facilities could handle. Our idea was that the Club could make a profit on such events, thereby allowing us to hold the line on membership fee increases. This has proved more difficult than we envisioned, with a variety of conditions that contributed to our decision to end this program. The growth of Sequim, coupled with inflationary price increases, rising fuel costs and a very competitive service labor market have made it difficult to maintain the high quality of food and service and competitive prices we had hoped to achieve. We will continue to service our member golf and social events with an enhanced Cafe staff operating at our most efficient level. Each event will be evaluated individually for the number of attendees and the complexity of the event. A decision will be made as to how the event will be hosted, either by our Cafe staff or if we should invite an outside commercial catering company to participate. Most of our events will be managed by Alicia Martin, our Cafe Manager using her staff. Generally this number will be in the 50+ range, depending on how complex the event may be. For large events, such as our Christmas Dinner, Valentines Day, Oktoberfest and our other large gatherings, we will be compiling a comprehensive list of approved caterers from which to choose.
All of our regularly scheduled events will continue to be held, including Steak Night, Theme Dinners, Birthday Bashes and all of the other events you have come to depend on for your social needs. For other non-member outside events such as weddings, reunions, benefits and other events, we will return to our previous practice of establishing a facilities rental program for those wishing to use our clubhouse space. We will assist those parties interested in using our facilities in choosing from our approved caterers list. I am sure that many of you know that Grace Michaud, our Food and Catering Director, will be moving on to manage her own business around the end of August. Many thanks to Grace for helping us manage the many events for our members and outside customers. We had great success with our Steak Night last Thursday, the food and service was wonderful thanks to our great cadre of volunteers and with the added help of Megan, Pat and Terry from our Cafe/Catering crew. Megan made some fabulous shrimp in butter sauce for one of the appetizers and sauteed some onions and mushrooms for our steak and baked potatoes. Our recent Sunday Brunches have been well received. We are back on track after undergoing some problems with unexpectedly not being open due to staff illnesses. We will continue to serve Sunday Brunch this fall until we determine if our business will be able to continue after our snowbirds have gone south. We will give you plenty of notice when we consider making any changes to our schedule. We are considering our Theme Dinners and how to best serve the membership, we will continue to have them on a regular basis while we determine the best method of delivering outstanding food. We may use outside caterers for special events. Keep an eye on the scheduling board in the hallway at the club or drop by and talk to our event coordinators in the little office next to the administrative offices. If you have a special request that you think would be popular with the membership, please let us know. Janet Littlefield and Pat Beltz have graciously consented to act as our Event Coordinators until we establish other arrangements. She and a volunteer cadre of our members will continue to take requests for events, food and bar service for our members and nonmembers needing services. (Continued HOUSE - Page 6)

If you have an upcoming event or have questions about an existing event, please contact Janet at the Club Event office (formerly Irene Phillips and Grace Michaud's office) to discuss event details. The phone number in that office is 683-6800 ext 18. We will regularly check the answering machine in the office and get back to you to answer questions within 24 hours if possible. If there is no one in the office, you may also leave a note.
August was a short month for Couples play due to the Club Championship and the closure of the course for aerification of the greens. At this writing, the Horse Race on August 24, and our last Field Day and dinner night on August 26, had not taken place. We are assuming everyone enjoyed these events and are looking forward to more fun golfing activities in September.
If there are changes in the schedules of our events or the Cafe/Catering, we will try to let everyone know via our email mailing lists and Alice and Woody's emit service. We will also try to post any changes as quickly as possible on our hallway corkboard.
We would like to thank the following ladies for their help with our chipping contests in our last two Field Day events. Thanks to Barb Bailey & Elaine Samphire for their help in June, and Gwyen Boger & Phyllis McKiernan for helping out in July. Nice job ladies.
Please direct all questions regarding Club food and beverage service to:
September is our last full month for Couples golf ending with our Couples Club Championship on September 29 & 30. Remember you need to have played twice with Couples in order to play in the Championship. There are four more play dates prior to the Championship so there is still time to get those rounds in. We would like to see a good showing for the tournament this year. Watch for the sign-up sheet on the outside tournament board.

GENERAL MANAGER I hope everyone is having a great summer. The level of play on the golf course appears to be increasing and the course conditions are ideal. So make sure to find some time to come out and enjoy what summer golf we have left. If you need to find a game please call the golf shop and they would be glad to help you. Just a friendly reminder that the golf course is for golfing only. I know the grass looks great for many other activities but it will set a bad precedent for others living on the course. If you notice people using the course for other than golf please do not approach them on the issue. Contact me and I will be glad to take care of it. TURF TOPICS
GREEN COMMITTEE
Since the last newsletter we’ve made some modest improvements to the landscape plantings on holes four, nine and other miscellaneous areas around the course. To a large degree these improvements were made possible due to the continuing efforts and generosity of some of our members. Having been asked in some cases to maintain their anonymity I offer simple thank you. The help is very much appreciated.
By the time you read this, the second yearly green aeration will have been completed and the turf should be well on the way of recovery. I am sure you all know this is a necessary evil to keep the greens healthy. This aeration signals the coming end of the summer season. This summer we have enjoyed great course conditions, there are many factors that have contributed to this but I feel the main factor is the maintenance crew. Once again they have done a wonderful job. There are still some major events left in the season, War of the Roses and the Clallam County Amateur Championship coming in September.
Tuesday being maintenance day we often take on projects that can interfere with play. Lacking a real maintenance day with a closed course we need a day, any day during the week when these projects might be done. It‘s not a matter of picking on or disregarding those that play on Tuesday it’s simply that at this time Tuesday is our designated maintenance day. As of June 23 the pace of play clocks on holes #3, 7 and 12 are set to your tee time rather than PST. Dan Ratcliffe, Course Superintendent
In last months newsletter Tyler talked about un-repaired ball marks on the greens, I have not noticed any improvement in this area since then. While you are waiting to putt please take a few seconds to look around and if you spot any ball marks go ahead and fix them and make sure you fix your own. The board has received some letters from members concerning chipping to the practice green by the clubhouse. Chipping is allowed to the green but the Board is asking chippers to respect others who are putting. Flying golf balls and stationary people don’t mix very well. Keep all your shots long and straight and enjoy our great golf course. John Sims, Chairperson
