Kenya National Bureau of Statistics Vision The vision for the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is “to become a center of excellence in statistical production and management for national development”. Mission The mission of the bureau is “coordinate and supervise the National Statistical System; produce and disseminate comprehensive, integrated, accurate and timely statistics required mainly to inform national development initiatives and processes; and develop and maintain a socio-economic national database”. Values The corporate values of the Bureau are user-orientation, credibility, integrity and quality awareness. In addition to these values, an environment where everyone can contribute fully and can develop as an individual. Mandate

The mandate of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is the collection, compilation, analysis, publication and dissemination of statistical information, and the co-ordination of the national statistical system, and for connected purposes.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics The Organization The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics comprises six interrelated Technical Divisions and one unit: Industrial and labour Statistics Population and other Social Statistics Data Processing, Research and Publications Macroeconomics and National Income Accounts Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Statistics National Sample Survey and Evaluation Programme and Field Administration Poverty Analysis and Research Unit Teamwork Together with all our partners, users, producers and development partners, we are committed to turn statistical challenges of the 21st Century into opportunities. Kenya Facts and Figures THE PARLIAMENT OF THE SOVEREIGN REPUBLIC OF KENYA AS SET OUT IN THE KENYA INDEPENDENCE ORDER IN COUNCIL 1963 AND AS AMENDED BY THE CONSTITUTION OF KENYA (AMENDMENT) ACT NO. 3 OF 1999. Parliament consists of President and the National Assembly:(a) The President: Is the Head of the State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic to be elected in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution (Act No. 28 of 1964, however, provided for the first President to be the person who immediately before the 12th December, 1964, held the Office of the Prime Minister under the Constitution). The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Act No. 6 of 1992 provided that the candidate for President who is elected as a Member of the National Assembly and who receives a greater number of valid votes cast in the Presidential election than any other candidate for President and who, in addition receives a minimum of twenty-five percent of the valid votes cast in at least five of the eight provinces shall be declared to be elected as President. (b) The National Assembly The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) No. 4 Act 40 of 1966 provided for the establishment of a National Assembly comprising one House, thus the Senate and House of Representatives were amalgamated to form one Chamber (Unicameral System) and the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) (No.2) Act No. 45 of 1968 provided for an election of the President and the Nominated Members. (c) Ex-officio The Speaker and the Attorney-General are the two Ex-officio National Assembly members.

The Constitution of Kenya (d) Members of Parliament There are 210 Elected Members of Parliament, 12 Nominated Members of Parliament. (e) The Vice-President Is appointed by the President from among the Ministers who are Elected Members of the National Assembly. (f) The Cabinet Consists of the President, the Vice-President and other Ministers. (g) Ministers and Assistant Ministers There are 29 Ministers and 43 Assistant Ministers. Ministers and Assistant Ministers are appointed by the President from among the Members of the National Assembly. Poverty headcount index PÎą =0: Measures the incidence of poverty, or the proportion of the population that cannot afford the basic basket of goods and services as measured by the food and overall poverty lines. Poverty gap index PÎą =1: Measures the depth of poverty, it provides information on how much poorer the poor people are relative to the poverty line. This measure captures the average expenditure shortfall, or gap, for the poor relative to the poverty line
