APRIL – AUGUST FLIP OVER
FOR WORKSHOPS AND MUCH MORE!
WELCOME Hello and welcome to our summer season of events. With the longer summer evenings approaching, our outdoor performance programme really comes to life. Because of the work we support at our creation centre, 101, Newbury audiences are able to see shows before they head off to festivals across the UK and further afield. April will see Future Cargo – a sci-fi dance show developed at 101 by Requardt & Rosenberg. May brings us The Princess and the Chickpea – a modern take on the classic tale using South Asian dance and circus. And in June Artonik, the company who brought us Colour of Time, will be back with Sangkhumtha: Hope – a striking production looking at the challenges facing our planet. Family audiences have plenty to keep them entertained too, with Arthur’s Dream Boat and Oi Frog & Friends! Live as well as the return of Horrible Histories: The Worst of Barmy Britain and Spy Monkey - a classic Indian tale brought to life by ATMA Dance. I am also delighted that our own Youth Theatre will be taking to the stage with their latest musical production, The Jungle Book, in the Easter holidays. Each year we visit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to find the most exciting contemporary theatre

to bring to the Corn Exchange. This season includes Rhum and Clay’s The War of the Worlds and Caroline Horton’s All of Me (The Possibility of Future Splendour), as well as a welcome return for Silent Uproar with their latest musical comedy, Thank You for Doing Nothing, alongside the joyful yet thoughtprovoking Beach Body Ready. I am always struck by the huge variety of shows we present each season, and never more so than during May when we host Newbury Spring Festival’s annual fortnight of world-class music alongside our own music programme which this season includes folk legends, The Fureys, and tribute acts including Elton John and Dolly Parton. And over at The Base, Open Studios presents its annual INSIGHT exhibition followed by the V&A Museum of Childhood’s exhibition Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered which promises to keep games players of all ages entertained over the summer. When visiting The Base please do visit the resident artists upstairs – there is such a fascinating array of art forms and there is always something new to see. Whatever you choose to come and see this season, thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Katy Griffiths DIRECTOR PS. Don’t forget to book your pantomime tickets for Aladdin by 31 March to take advantage of our Early Bird offer. After last year’s Sleeping Beauty, I can’t wait to see what surprises Plested and Brown have for us!

GAME PLAN:
BOARD GAMES REDISCOVERED Are you a Scrabble superstar? A chess champion? Or a Monopoly master? This summer we invite you to celebrate the joy, excitement and occasional frustration of playing board games. Board games are played by everyone, young and old. They have a universal appeal that transcends cultural and language barriers. The playing of board games is embedded into our culture, not just the games themselves but the act of playing, the interaction with family and friends, the lessons to be learned and the fun to be had.
Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered includes some of the most iconic, enthralling and visually striking games from the V&A’s outstanding national collection of board games. Alongside family favourites such as Cluedo and Trivial Pursuit, and
traditional games like chess, the exhibition will look at historical board games including The Game of the Goose and other beautifully designed games from the 18th and 19th centuries. With hands-on activities and the chance to become part of one big interactive game, come and delight in old favourites, and discover what kind of game player you really are…

This outdoor procession brings to light the urgency of taking action against climate change and carries the hope for a preserved Earth. Water is a priceless treasure. From the company who brought the unforgettable Colour of Time to Newbury, Artonik’s new creation is a powerful physical and visual journey that mixes art and dance through twelve scenes, evoking oceans of plastic, interminable walks merely to fetch water, arid lands and the slow death of diverted rivers. Through a dramatic night procession in the streets - much like the Mekong flows through China to the valleys of Cambodia - Artonik mixes Khmer traditions with contemporary choreography, music and scenography. This is a night time processional show for audiences of all ages. The Corn Exchange’s Outdoor Programme is produced by 101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space and supported by Greenham Trust and Arts Council England.

‘No-one would have believed in the early years of the twentieth century that this world was being watched...’ But we did believe. We believed that Martians landed in New Jersey. We believed a water tower was an alien war machine. We believed a man walked on the moon. We believe everything the internet trolls tell us and now the end of the world is being broadcast live... Inspired by H.G. Wells’ sci-fi novel and Orson Welles’ classic radio play, this legendary science fiction thriller is playfully reimagined for our era of Fake News and ‘alternative facts’.

Classically trained as Cambridge choristers, Adam Drew and Guy Hayward write and perform ‘cheek-achingly funny’ songs, guaranteed to tickle funny-bones, all backed by swingin’ jazz accompaniment at the piano. They made their London debut at the 10 Downing Street Christmas party. The song they wrote specially for the event was vetoed by the PM’s aides - but, after the audience insisted, it was performed, with chandelier-rattlingly riotous results. Since then, they have been fast becoming the toast of the smartest parties across the land, and internationally. From Highclere Castle to the Onassis yacht Christina O, via Annabel’s, the Palazzo Corsini, The Vineyard at Stockcross and Cobblers Cove, Barbados.
The Derek Paravicini Quartet is the new musthear group, currently wowing audiences all over the UK, following their successful debut on the BBC’s In Tune programme. Four stunningly talented young musicians combine to create a unique sound, portraying a kaleidoscope of emotions. The Derek Paravicini Quartet are a musical chameleon, able to change their sonic palette to suit any occasion, with the breath-taking new takes on classic songs and jazz standards, and a repertoire from ragtime to Radiohead, from Irving Berlin to the Beatles, from Cole Porter to Coldplay.

A hilarious night out about the climate emergency and the men who profit from it, filled with spin doctors, dancing grannies and supernatural capitalists. In the near future so called ‘global warming’ has apparently affected most of Britannia’s drinking water - if you want to believe the opinions of 99% of experts and their so called ‘science’. But fear not; our hero, and lobbyist for the Big Water Corporation, Molly Pazgan is here to tell you that everything is fine: don’t worry about the colour of your tap water, there’s no conclusive evidence to suggest it’s what’s making your kids ill… and most of all to keep BUYING IT! Ted’s got a plan – an outlandish, ridiculous plan… but one that’s definitely going to work. Ted is feeling pretty darn good thank you very much, straight out of chemo and back pulling the strings at Ormond’s Fruit & Veg a proper grocer’s amongst the overpriced vegan hipster shops. Unfortunately he’s come back to a right mess. Stevie’s launching a strike, Colin’s crashed the new van, Melanie’s sticking her nose into his finances... and the cat’s gone missing. On top of it all, Jimmy is back infecting the office with his capitalist propaganda. But Ted’s been on the picket-line for 40 years. And if anyone’s going to exploit his workers, it’s damn well going to be him.
Tracy Turnblad is a talented teenager with big hair and a big heart, who longs to dance on the Corny Collins Show. When she becomes a local star, Tracy sets out to make sure everyone can dance together, whatever their size, colour or hairstyle, in this family-friendly musical.
Starring Phil Davis, The Heart of a Tiger is about the collision between ideology and survival, keeping up when the world leaves you behind, and the politics of Brussels sprouts.
