THE HENLEY COLLEGE TIMELINE
2010
2017
The foundation of The United Charity School brought together the free grammar school and Dame Periam’s Charity School –operating as two distinct centres of teaching and instruction within the town.
The School of Science and Art and Technical Instruction, known as ‘The Institute’ was founded in the town of Henley and was based in Hart Street.
The Henley College became the first college in the UK to be granted a change in status from a further education college to a designated sixth form college.
1994
In parallel with the development of the free grammar school, the Dame Elizabeth Periam’s Charity School was founded, catering for 20 poor boys of the town undertaking an apprenticeship.
The Henley Grammar School was formed, bringing together Dame Elizabeth Periam’s School and the free grammar school.
The Henley College became incorporated as an independent body and out of direct control of the Local Authority by virtue of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.
1987
A free grammar school was founded, in accordance with the wishes above by James I, for the “education, institution and instruction of children and youth in grammar and other good learning”.
The Henley Grammar School moved to Rotherfield Court, as a County High School and widened its admissions to include girls.
1959
Augustus Knapp left £200 in his will with the express aim of founding a free grammar for “the instruction of youthful people” within two years of his death.
The Institute moved to new premises on Gravel Hill –now known as Deanfield Campus – and was renamed the South Oxfordshire Technical College
The merger between King James’s College (based at the current Rotherfield site) and the South Oxfordshire Technical College (based at the Deanfield site) took place, giving birth to The Henley College as we know it today.
1976
Following the cessation of younger pupils being admitted from 1974, the transition from Henley Grammar School to Sixth Form College, known as King James’s College, was completed.
The Henley College came number 6 in the National Centre for Diversity’s Top 100 index, recognising the best organisations in relation to fairness, respect, equality, diversity, inclusion and engagement.
The Cuthbert Suite was opened to provide a digital working space for students on the Deanfield Campus, and the Art department was completely refurbished to create a Creative Arts Hub on the Rotherfield Campus.
2022
A brand new hospital ward is opened, alongside state-of-the-art teaching facilities and healthcare equipment.
2023
Investment and comprehensive refurbishment of the D5 building along with new equipment such as VR headsets, 3D printers, computer networking data cabinet and robotics. This has created a transformed space to accommodate qualifications in growth areas including digital, computing, business, health and engineering.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Roddy Slater Director of Raw Mentoring
“I have been working with The Henley College for three years now. I initially became involved with the college to support and mentor student athletes involved with the Elite Rugby Programme and to support their transition from London to Henley. Over the last couple of years, I have also begun supporting the main body of students and staff to maximise their productivity and experience. From coaching and training others since I was 18 years old, I have been able to deliver a bespoke programme shaped by my expertise in education and behaviour management.
If you need any support or just an outlet on your journey through college, we can create the success you deserve and desire.”
Our aim is to help you achieve your very best and grow into a successful and confident individual equipped with all the tools needed for your next step. We take health, safety and wellbeing very seriously and want every student to thrive and be happy.
The College promotes healthy living, and being in a rural town, we have plenty of fresh air and green space both on campus and in the surrounding area. We are a short walk from the meadows by the River Thames that offer a quiet space for outdoor study. There are lots of opportunities for students to be involved in sport and fitness with a range of sports available through our Enrichment programme and we also have a contemporary fitness room/gym in our Sports Hall, which was opened in 2012. Wellbeing is our priority and our caring and professional staff offer specialist guidance and support, including counselling and welfare. We all have times where we face challenges, whether at college or at home, and we are always there to listen and support students.

Dr Joanna Atkinson Oxbridge Coordinator
“For the past fifteen years, in my role as designated Oxbridge Co-ordinator, I’ve prepared students for application to Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. I’ve developed a comprehensive programme offering information and support throughout the two years of students’ college courses including: monthly bulletins (advertising such outreach activities as subject masterclasses, college/ departmental open days, residential courses, competitions), and regular email contact with individual students and their parents. Specific support is provided during the actual application process, refining of the crucial Personal Statement, co-ordination of the subject-tutors’ reports into the main UCAS academic reference, preparation for the tests and written work which many subjects at Oxford and Cambridge now require before applicants are short-listed for interview, and focus on the interview itself. We’re very proud of our Oxbridge Programme and hope those new students interested in finding out more about what’s involved with making an Oxbridge application will take advantage of all we have to offer when they start their course at The Henley College!”

T LEVELS
The College began offering T Levels in September 2022 with the T Level Health. T Levels are a brand new qualification. They are high-quality technical courses, designed with employers, to give young people the skills that industries need, and for them to thrive in the workplace.
They are two-year courses, equivalent to 3 A Levels, that can be studied following GCSEs.
T Levels focus on vocational skills providing technical knowledge and practical skills specific to a learner’s chosen industry or occupation. 80% of the course is study time in college, gaining industry specific skills and knowledge. 20% is on industrial placement, putting into practice the knowledge and technical skills learnt in the classroom.
On completion, students receive a nationally recognised qualification and will be prepared for their future progression routes, that include skilled employment, Higher Level Apprenticeships, or higher education.
From September 2023, the College will offer a further three T Level qualifications in:
● Business management and administration
● Digital support services (computer networking and cybersecurity)
● Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing
● Health
T LEVEL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
The Business management and Administration T Level focuses on Business Management , leadership, and Administration Support. In year 1, you will study core business knowledge and work on a project set by an employer. You will work collaboratively with other students, problem solve, and undertake research. You will also begin your industrial placement that will continue into year 2, where you will specialise in Business Support and leadership.
T LEVEL DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT FOR ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING
During this two-year course, students will develop a range of skills and core knowledge in engineering and manufacturing. This will include essential mathematics, materials and their properties, commercial principles and working within the engineering and manufacturing sector. You will be able to specialise in mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, control and instrumentation engineering or structural engineering.
T LEVEL DIGITAL SUPPORT SERVICES (COMPUTER NETWORKING AND CYBERSECURITY)
This T Level will give you the industry knowledge and skills required to understand IT support, cybersecurity, interactive and digital products. During the two years, you will undertake an industry placement, with the opportunity to work with experts in the IT industry, practicing your IT skills within a professional workplace. This course is suitable for anyone wanting a career in digital infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity and support. The final qualification will enable you to progress into a career in the digital sector.
T LEVEL HEALTH

INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS
Industry placements are a valuable opportunity to put your learning into practice and develop technical skills relevant to your vocational course.
They will enable you to finish your programme of study with the skills, knowledge and expertise that employers are seeking. At Henley, we have relationships with a broad range of employers and we’ll help you in finding the right placement. We then visit our students in the workplace to support and monitor their progress. When looking for a placement, the main thing is to keep an open mind. You might have your heart set on working for a particular company, but it’s equally important to land the right role that will offer the best experience. We have a dedicated Industry Placement Coordinator who is available to give advice and guidance to students following this route.
Students studying T Level Health will have the opportunity to complete their industry placement at the Royal Berkshire NHS Trust.
“The Industry Placements programme is an exciting, work-related, learning opportunity for our students.
My focus is to continuously improve the work placement experiences of students, employers, and other external organisations that host them. We have a learner-centred approach, ensuring placements meet the individual needs of the student by supporting them in gaining the skills, knowledge and experience they need to support their learning journey at college, and beyond. The quality of the Industrial Placements has led to the commissioning of an Industry Placement award, which recognises students who have been shown to be a highly valued addition to the placement provider, in demonstrating outstanding professional competence, and fully embracing the values of their placement/organisation.
We are privileged to have access to a variety of industry-leading businesses and organisations, and we work closely with teachers, employers, and trainers. It is essential that our students have exposure to tangible experiences in the world of work, whether they are progressing to higher education, or industry. We enable our young people to recognise and develop their potential, and in turn stand out as a student from Henley.”

THE BEST WAY FOR YOU TO LEARN
You may already know the area of study you wish to pursue, but we can help you find the course that meets your individual learning needs and will allow you to flourish. At The Henley College we offer a wide range of A Level and vocational programmes across many different subjects.
At school, you will have developed a good idea of the kind of learning that suits you best. Some students thrive in a highly academic environment with an emphasis on theory and largely exam-based assessment; others do much better in a more practical environment where the learning is more closely linked to industry and assessment is based more on project work.
If you are expecting to do well in your GCSE examinations and know that you want to progress to degree level study at 18, then A Levels may suit you.
If you prefer to learn through practical project work, you may want to consider a vocational qualification at Level 3. A full Extended Diploma, taken over two years, is the equivalent of 3 A Levels. These qualifications can provide an alternative route to university.
Alongside either A Level or vocational programmes, you can choose to undertake the Extended Project, a distinctive and highly regarded qualification involving detailed research on a topic of your choice. It develops a range of transferable skills including planning, analysis and evaluation.
APPLIED 'A LEVELS'
Applied 'A Levels' are growing in popularity nationally and are now being offered by a number of exam boards. They offer a different assessment model to conventional A Levels as they are a balance of both coursework and exams. Exams boards give them various different names, such as Extended Certificates, but it is simplest to think them as applied versions of A Levels.
These courses are structured like diplomas but are the same size as a single A Level and work within an A Level programme. They are usually studied in combination with A Levels but you can study three Applied A Levels as a full programme on its own.
These qualifications have all been developed in conjunction with universities and provide a platform for progress into higher education. This includes Russell Group universities but some of these stipulate that they should be accompanied by at least two conventional A Levels.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE
A LEVELS
A Levels are academic two year courses with a high level of theoretical content. They are usually assessed by examinations at the end of the course – either written, or possibly a supervised practical exam, for example in Art. A Levels have a renowned international reputation and are still the primary route for most traditional university applicants.
VOCATIONAL COURSES
Vocational courses generally involve fewer, if any, exams, however there may be an element of external assessment. They focus on coursework, and give a balance of practical work and theory. Level 1 and Level 2 courses take one year and you can usually progress from these on to the next level. At Level 3 they are equivalent to AS and A Levels and prepare you for a range of options. Many of our vocational students go on to prestigious universities, while others enter the world of work and then do further study for degree or higher level apprenticeships.
SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
Students select the A Levels they study for a variety of different reasons: they enjoy the subjects, have taken an interest in an area, or feel they ‘ought’ to do a particular subject to keep their options open. It is also, however, worth thinking about how these subjects will help you progress when you leave College. With this in mind, it is a good idea to consider having at least two subjects that go together. This will help you study because the subjects will support each other and they will also help you to progress to university, apprenticeships or into employment.
Aaron Danton Student Profile
Aaron studied A Levels at Henley, achieving A*s in Mathematics and Further Mathematics and a grade A in Computer Science. Aaron was also the winner of the Education Award for Computer Science.

I'm grateful for the opportunities Henley College has provided and can't wait to begin my next chapter.”
Niya will be progressing to AECC University College in Bournemouth to study Diagnostic Radiography.
Oscar Collin Student Profile
Oscar studied A Levels at Henley, achieving two A* grades in Art and Design, a grade A in Geography as well as a grade A in his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
“I often thank my younger self for choosing to go to the Henley College, and welcoming change rather than staying in the conformity of my sixth form. The relaxed schedules and increased freedom put the responsibility on me to learn, which let me learn things about my own studying habits as well as encouraged me to dig deeper where a topic or idea interested me.”
Oscar joined the College from Highdown School and is now going on to study Architecture at Cambridge University.

BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISE
Would you like to learn more about how businesses manage their resources efficiently and satisfy customers, suppliers, shareholders and employees?
You don’t need to have studied Business previously, and if you are new to the subject you may be surprised how much you’ve already picked up through your everyday interactions – from ordering pizza over a phone app, or searching for a bank account that gives the best interest rates.
A vital ingredient in a market economy, you’ll find Business a dynamic subject where theory can be applied to a wide range of organisations with which we are all familiar. You will dig deep into business theory and use case studies to develop your understanding of how method is put into practice by small, medium, and large organisations.
As well as A Level Business and Economics, we offer career focused Diplomas and Certificates in Business and Travel and Tourism. Business students will cover topics such as finance, marketing, human resource management and knowledge of the business sector. Travel and Tourism students will combine the study of tourism with an introduction into the world of Business.
A large number of our students go on to study Business degrees at university and progress into jobs in the retail, finance, charity and manufacturing sectors. LANGUAGES
Did you know...
● The Henley College is one of few colleges offering a suite of modern languages. Students are able to study any combination of the three MFL subjects on offer.
These skills can take you a long way. Communication is at the heart of modern life, and to understand the nuances of language is a key that can unlock doors in life, business, travel or on any career path.
Our students enjoy challenging reading and like to discuss and debate ideas expressed in language, whether written or spoken. Our teachers are passionate about what they teach and want you to enjoy your experience here and to succeed.
A Level courses in English Language are nothing like GCSEs. You will actively engage with everyday language and understand how it works. You’ll find out why people speak differently, how men and women use language, and how to use language to be a great communicator.
Kaya Slater Student Profile
In A Level English Literature, you’ll search beyond the characters and plot of books and think critically about how the author made their choices, as well as the social context of the work. Studying Shakespeare can be as much about Tudor politics and lifestyles as it is about the Bard himself.
Students of French, German or Spanish will be taught by native speakers and have the chance to travel and may participate in exchanges. The foreign language skills you gain will be in demand by future employers, as well as equip you for future study of the subjects at university level.
A recently published study showed that employees who use a foreign language in their work earn on average eight per cent more than their colleagues.
Kaya studies A Levels in English Language, English Literature, and Media Studies.
“I chose The Henley College because it provides you with the freedom to express yourself without judgment, which allows you to become more open-minded. I have been very creative from a young age so I chose to study both English Literature and Language to allow myself to be inspired by other people’s work.”
Kaya joined us from Denefield School and is hoping to be selected to run for Great Britain at the World Championships and Olympics, as well as to run for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.
● Universities value students who have taken a modern language at A level, which provides a solid foundation for degrees in History, Languages, Politics, or Law. This also opens the door to studying a joint honours degree (Oxford Sixth Form College, 2023).

ENRICHMENT AND SPORT
College life isn’t just about studying. There are many other aspects to experience, and we are committed to offering you an exciting and diverse Enrichment programme, alongside your chosen programme of study.
Enrichment is a social part of college life where you will be able to learn a new skill or develop existing skills, play a sport, or join one of many clubs. Most importantly, it is a great way to settle in and make friends. We encourage you to participate in at least one Enrichment option during your time at The Henley College, although you can sign up to as many as you would like.
Classes run throughout the week, with students able to enjoy a broad range of opportunities across many areas of interest. Every year, we are open to ideas from students for any societies they would like to set up and we support these wherever possible. We encourage student-led enrichment groups that develop leadership skills, as well as ensuring we are offering the activities our students wish to engage with.
In 2023, activities included: Musical Plays and Productions, Ancient Languages and Archaeology, Student Union, Planet Sustainability and Environmental Issues, Hair and Beauty, Outlook Expedition to Costa Rica, LGBTQ Club, Yoga, Oxbridge Group, Medical Society, Duke of Edinburgh Award, as well as a range of sporting options.
This year we are working with Enterprise Partnership and Lions Sports Academy to offer Skills for the Future, Sport and Wellbeing, as well as our Community and Social Clubs.
SPORTS ENRICHMENT
Sports Enrichment offers all students at the College an opportunity to develop their skills and fitness. A number of sports are available each year, usually including basketball, netball, football, and rugby.
Training sessions form an integral part of the timetable within the normal college day, allowing you to train regularly with specialist coaches alongside your main academic programme. Participating students will typically have an additional 3–4.5 hours of sports training per week.
Sports Enrichment encourages participation from learners across the College; it is not exclusive to Sports students or elite sportspeople. If there are large numbers applying for your chosen sport, you may need to attend a trial.
If you are interested in joining Sports Enrichment, please indicate this on your application form.

If you decide to drive to the College, an offsite car park provides limited car parking for students. A permit is required for this site and available at a very low cost. Students are generally discouraged from driving to College for practical and safety reasons. Unless a student has a disability or access issue, there is strictly no parking available on the College sites and the Rotherfield site should not be accessed by car.
Disclaimer: The Henley College reserves the right to cancel any course, or combine it with another course or courses provided, if an insufficient number of students enrol upon a course, or if course numbers are not maintained to a level at which it is viable that the College provides a course, or in the light of the College’s staffing. If a course is cancelled The Henley College will reimburse in full any fees paid if the course has not commenced, or pro rata according to the numbers of hours tuition provided by the College. The college has the right to alter the content of any course, in order to satisfy curriculum requirements, or in accordance with the instructions of any independent accrediting body, or otherwise to enable the college to provide an appropriate standard of education in respect of the course.
