OUR LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE TAKING PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SEES ACCRINGTON STANLEY VISITING FRATTON PARK THIS AFTERNOON

It has been great working with Danny and Nicky Cowley over the past few weeks and their energy and enthusiasm have been clear from the outset. People will always have differing views on managers, but they certainly appear to have struck a chord with the Fratton faithful, which is key.

W

I’m in no doubt that it’s going to be a tough game today. Accrington Stanley as a club are a credit to their town and John Coleman has worked absolute wonders for them. Although they are in mid-table, I fully expect them to come out fighting and make life as tough as possible for us. It’s a real cup final and either our season ends today or we will have three matches to try to achieve our aim of reaching the Championship.

ell, here we are. At the end of what has been a turbulent campaign for the club – on and off the pitch – it’s a one-game shootout to reach the play-offs. It feels as though this has been a much longer season than normal, even though the delayed start means it has actually been a bit shorter. The fact that fans have been absent for most of that period has obviously played a part in making it seem like a real slog at times. A huge part of my matchday experience is walking out to my seat at Fratton Park and experiencing that roar from the crowd. It is the same when we have games on the road because our supporters always represent us so well. There does now seem to be light at the end of the tunnel, though, and hopefully we can start next term with a full capacity.

Whatever happens, I want to thank our magnificent fans – on behalf of the board and everyone at Pompey – for the magnificent support they always provide. You can be sure that we will be working doubly hard over the summer to continue our progression. It was extremely sad to hear about

EITHER OUR SEASON ENDS TODAY OR WE WILL HAVE THREE MATCHES TO TRY TO ACHIEVE OUR AIM OF REACHING THE CHAMPIONSHIP the passing of another club legend earlier in the week. Alan McLoughlin was a fantastic footballer and it was an absolute pleasure to work with him during his time as a coach for our academy and first team. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family and loved ones. A warm welcome to everyone from Accrington who has made the journey down to the south coast today. PUP! Mark Catlin Chief Executive

HEAD COACH

DANNY COWLEY GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU ALL AS WE GET READY TO FACE ACCRINGTON STANLEY IN THE LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AT FRATTON PARK

e have taken seven points W from the last nine available. Considering we had to change

the system in the first two of these fixtures due to injuries and suspension, this has been a good outcome for us. Credit to the players, who adapted well after losing two of our back four. We are a new group and in the process of embedding the principle of our game idea. They have already taken on so much information. To have to make significant alterations at this stage in our development as a team was far from ideal and I have THE BEST nothing but admiration for them in PLAYERS AND terms of their willingness to learn. To take 20 points from 11 matches – with seven of those being away from home – has been a positive return. The group have travelled more than 2,500 miles in the past 21 days and bearing in mind the diminishing squad numbers, I have been proud of the players’ commitment to the cause. Our performance against Bristol Rovers was both solid and professional. We scored a really nice counter-attack goal and restricted our opponents to 0.18 expected goals. We had good control in the game, but weren’t able to find the rhythm in our performance we would have liked. We looked like a team using ‘Plan B’ who hadn’t quite mastered ‘Plan A’ yet. That is not for the want of trying – it is just where we are as a group at this time. We have played seven times in 21 days, with very little opportunity to train and continue our development as a team. The Accrington match would have been a great one for the neutral. For people associated with either team, however, it should have come with a health warning! To go 2-0 down was bitterly disappointing. The first goal was a great effort, but could have been portsmouthfc.co.uk

avoided with better positional play, while the second was a very poor one to concede. Three consecutive mistakes by us led to the goal and we went in at half-time with a mountain to climb. To show the resilience, determination and grit needed to fight our way back in the second half was really pleasing. We took the lead in injury time with a brilliant goal from John Marquis, so to then be pegged back moments later was heart-breaking and really tough to take. After a difficult way into the AFC Wimbledon game, I was pleased with our response – particularly after going a goal down. It is the second time in those 11 fixtures that we have come from behind down to win. It is a given that you are going to win when you play well, but good teams are also 05

able to do that when they are not at their best. This is a trait of all successful sides. To go into the final match with it being in our hands is an opportunity that we have worked incredibly hard for. The best players and teams seize the opportunity when it is presented. In fact, it is these moments that define us. This is not going to be easy, but then nothing worth achieving ever is! There is no doubt we are going to need your support and, quite simply, there is no way we can do this without you. We know what this game means to you and we feel exactly the same. It is our absolute ambition to put a performance together that reflects the magnitude of this encounter. We intend to be relentless, play with energy and intensity, and find our best performance when we need it most. Remember, it is difficult to beat the team that never gives up! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome John Coleman and his Accrington Stanley team to Fratton Park today. We have the utmost respect for John and his staff. Year after year, they recruit from the lower leagues and then develop them into top players. They have created a team that are a match for anyone at this level. Play up Pompey! Danny EDDIE ‘ED’ HOOPER Portsmouth Football Club were saddened to learn of the death of loyal fan Eddie ‘Ed’ Hooper, who had been a season ticket holder since the early 1970s. May he rest in peace. @Pompey

POMPEY v ACCRINGTON

fter losing at Swindon A just over a fortnight ago, Pompey were outside of the top six and no longer holding their fate in their own hands.

But a three-match unbeaten run, coupled with results elsewhere, means that the task is – at least in theory – simple heading into the final game of the regular League One campaign. See off Accrington in front of the Sky Sports cameras this lunchtime and Danny Cowley’s men can look forward to a two-legged playoff clash with either Blackpool, Sunderland or Lincoln.

of the year meant the Blues and Accrington did not meet for the first time this term until the end of April.

considerable improvement on the truncated 2019/20 campaign, when John Coleman’s outfit ended up 17th.

Those who tuned in to events at the Crown Ground witnessed a ding-dong battle that saw the visitors appear to have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

They have already won seven times on their league travels this term, collecting a maximum haul at AFC Wimbledon (2-1), Northampton (1-0), Swindon (3-0), Gillingham (2-0), Charlton (2-0), Doncaster (1-0) and Oxford (2-1).

Instead, though, they had to settle for a point in a six-goal thriller and Stanley will now be looking to maintain their unbeaten conclusion to the campaign.

A draw or defeat could even be enough should Oxford and Charlton slip up at home to Burton and champions Hull respectively.

Since narrowly losing at Rochdale three weeks ago, they have defeated Doncaster on home soil and then drawn three successive matches against promotion hopefuls Sunderland, Pompey and Charlton.

But the members of the Fratton faithful perched nervously on the edge of their sofas will be hoping the Blues can get the job done themselves.

It was the latter of those results that dealt Cowley’s troops a massive favour, ensuring that the Addicks are not the side in pole position for sixth spot today.

Anybody who thinks they will enjoy an easy ride today, however, only has to cast their mind back 12 days to know that is unlikely to be the case.

Accrington are currently sitting a comfortable 13th, but know they could finish as high as ninth should they collect three points at Fratton Park.

On the flip side, it was less than two months ago when they were routed 7-0 at a Jonson ClarkeHarris-inspired Peterborough. But the Blues know all about Stanley’s fearsome frontline of Dion Charles and Colby Bishop – both of whom were plucked out of non-league football in 2019 and made the step up seem like child’s play. The most recent Fratton clash between the pair took place on the final day of the 2018/19 season, with Ben Close’s equaliser securing a 1-1 draw. Pompey were gearing up for the play-offs that day, but will likely need all three points if they are to extend this campaign and keep the Championship dream alive. @Pompey

likes of Southport, Runcorn, Macclesfield and Morecambe. He also represented England at ‘C’ level and began his coaching career by being appointed player/manager of Ashton United in 1997. Coleman’s first spell in charge of Accrington began two years later and lasted for more than a decade, during which time the club won three titles to rise back into the Football League. He later had spells in the dugout at Rochdale, Southport and Sligo, but returned to the Crown Ground in 2014.

League One April 27 2021 Pompey thought they had scored a stoppagetime winner at Accrington, only for a last-gasp own-goal to ensure a crazy Crown Ground contest finished all square at 3-3. The hosts had roared into a commanding interval lead, with Colby Bishop and Cameron Burgess both on target amid driving rain in the northwest. John Marquis reduced the deficit at the second attempt following the restart, however, and substitute Ryan Williams then slotted home an equaliser.

HOMEGROWN HEROES FOOTBALL HISTORIAN LEIGH EDWARDS PROFILES FIVE PLAYERS WHO PROGRESSED THROUGH THE ACCRINGTON RANKS STAN LYNN

Former Accrington right-back Lynn starred in Aston Villa’s 1957 FA Cup final triumph. He made his debut in Stanley’s 8-4 win over Lincoln two months before turning professional in July 1947 and scored twice in 35 league games, joining the Villans in March 1950. A noted penalty-taker, he grabbed a hat-trick against Sunderland at the beginning of 1958 and helped the club secure the second tier title in 1959/60, then the inaugural League Cup in 1961. Moving to Birmingham in October 1961, Lynn was a League Cup winner again in 1963, then featured for Stourbridge. He worked in the stores at Lucas and died in April 2002. DAVE HARGREAVES Ace marksman Hargreaves is Stanley's all-time record scorer. Initially with local side Whinney Hill, he arrived at Accrington in July 1974 and found the net on an incredible 56 occasions during the 1975/76 campaign. He left portsmouthfc.co.uk

for Blackburn in December 1977, but was unlucky with injuries and returned in the summer of 1978. Heading their goal charts on seven occasions, ‘Haggis’ struck 318 times in 355 outings overall and had a testimonial year shortly before joining Oswaldtwistle Immanuel in February 1985. Hargreaves appeared for Padiham and Oswaldtwistle St Mary’s while working as a corporation gardener and passed away in August 2018. PAUL MULLIN Powerful striker Mullin was top scorer when Accrington claimed the Conference title in 2005/06. Briefly with the club at the start of his career, he had spells at Darwen, Trafford, Clitheroe and Radcliffe Borough before returning to the Crown Ground in August 2000 and starred as the Northern Premier League crown was secured in 2002/03, then Huddersfield and Bournemouth were beaten en route to the FA Cup third round the following season. Ever-present in 2006/07, he was Stanley’s leading marksman seven times and named ‘Player of the Year’ on six occasions. Mullin hit 195 goals in a club record 455 appearances before leaving for Morecambe in the summer of 2009. BRETT ORMEROD Striker Ormerod was Stanley’s top scorer during the 1996/97 campaign. A former Blackburn junior, he netted 32 goals in 54 matches for Accrington prior to joining Blackpool for £50,000 in March 1997. He struck in their 2000/01 Division Three play-off final success and was signed by Southampton for £1.75 million in December 2001. Finding the target in their 2003 FA Cup semi11

final win over Watford, Ormerod also went close to equalising in the final. He moved to Preston at the start of 2006 and returned to Bloomfield Road three years later, helping the Tangerines reach the Premier League in 2009/10, then appeared for Wrexham, Padiham and Bamber Bridge. ROSS SYKES

Burnley-born centre-back Sykes was a Stanley scholar before penning professional terms in May 2016, appearing in several EFL Trophy games prior to making his league debut as a late substitute in a 2-2 draw at Notts County in August 2017. He was a member of the Accrington squad that claimed the League Two title that term and also gained experience with a loan spell at Southport. Featuring in the 2009 FA Cup fourth round clash with Derby that attracted a record attendance to the Crown Ground, Sykes has struck eight goals 87 games for the club, but not featured since the middle of January due to injury. @Pompey

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR

he news arrived completely T out of the blue. My services at Portsmouth Football Club had

been dispended with courtesy of a terse declaration on social media, with – much to my bemusement – word eventually filtering down to me. This clearly turned out not to be the case, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this column! The rumour originated from a disgruntled supporter who was berating the club for the departure of some academy players, which, by the way, is an annual occurrence at every side in the country. It was more of a flurry than a storm, although I am nevertheless grateful to those who reacted at my ‘dismissal’ with outrage and understanding of those who said it was perhaps a necessary sacrifice because of what the Covid-19 pandemic has done to football finances. I’m even sympathetic to anyone who didn’t realise I was still working at Fratton Park! But I was also alarmed at how quickly

it took for some to read this and start slamming those in charge. If these people ended up on jury duty, they would probably convict the defendant before he had even reached the witness box. The scary thing is that anyone can post something on Twitter or Facebook and it quickly becomes viewed as a fact. I’m not sure how the rumour started and I certainly wasn’t going to respond to it, nor was anyone from the club. That just legitimises the scaremongering. As it happens, around the time of my supposed departure, I was working on an exciting new pre-match development that many of you may have already seen on the official YouTube channel ahead of the Bristol Rovers game. As for young players being released, for someone who has been around scholars at this time of year, it never gets any easier. Some of them have already announced the news on

their Twitter accounts and I have to say they have done so in a respectful and mature manner, especially given how they must be feeling. I have been on seminars where the message is quite clear from the very start about the percentage of those who will go on to become professional footballers. It is why the education element of the academy programme is so important – you need something to fall back on if you don’t make it. Again, however, some took this as an opportunity to proclaim the demise of Pompey’s youth set-up and brandish the club as a disgrace. This is despite the vast majority having never – or rarely – seen these lads in action. Whether or not we make the play-offs, I look forward to seeing you again next season – words that, for those who take everything they see on social media at face value, you might not have been expecting to read.

ON THIS DAY MAY

09 1973 There were more than 22,000 fans inside Fratton Park to watch Pompey beat West Ham 3-2 in a testimonial match for Albert McCann (above).

1987 The Blues ended the campaign by losing 2-1 at home Sheffield United – with some players allegedly still the worse for wear after promotion to the top tier had been secured earlier in the week.

2006 Tommy Rowe – the last surviving member of the 1939 FA Cupwinning side – passed away in a Dorchester nursing home at the age of 92.

2009 Pompey were still waiting for the victory they needed to secure Premier League survival, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Blackburn, with John Utaka (above) missing a late penalty.

2010 The Blues’ top-flight tenure ended with a slightly unfortunate 1-0 loss at Everton, as Diniyar Bilyaletdinov netted the only goal in the closing stages.

DID YOU KNOW? Right-back Phil Rookes arranged for a local photographer to take snaps of the Pompey squad in 17 portsmouthfc.co.uk @Pompey 1948. The pictures were sold outside Fratton Park, with the profits shared among the players.

MOORE’S MEMORIES MY FIRST THOUGHTS UPON HEARING THE NEWS OF ITS DEMISE VIA AN IMPASSIONED RANT FROM GARY NEVILLE CAN BE EXPRESSED IN JUST TWO WORDS. GOOD RIDDANCE

have had hangovers that lasted I‘European longer than the proposed Super League’, which

of a win at Highbury by a blatant Robert Pires dive on a sunny autumn afternoon against a side that would become the Arsenal ‘invincibles’.

sprung up on a Sunday afternoon, only to be killed off by Tuesday night.

Some stirring Anfield draws and a few Fratton victories against the mighty Liverpool can never be expunged from the record books, while memorable moments against Chelsea are harder to come by, aside from meeting them in the 2010 FA Cup final.

My first thoughts upon hearing the news of its demise via an impassioned rant from Gary Neville can be expressed in just two words. Good riddance. Before this failed innovation takes all the flak, with the Premier League sat like an innocent cherub, the inequality produced by our top tier should definitely not be glossed over. There are, at best, four possible title winners and perhaps six more sides chasing the European spots, while half of the division frantically strives for survival, desperate to milk the financial rewards on offer for mediocrity. Those three teams unfortunate enough to drop through the trapdoor receive a softened blow, courtesy of generous parachute payments that offer them a significant head start on returning to the promised land and distorting the Championship in the process.

against the ‘big’ sides during our seven years in the Premier League, but they are much fewer in number. Even when we lifted the FA Cup in 2008, both our matches at Wembley took place against sides from the division below. However, the quarter-final victory at Old Trafford was certainly special, as were our three league successes over Manchester United on home soil. Steve Stone wheeling away in delight after netting the winner and an exquisite last-gasp tackle by Linvoy Primus on Wayne Rooney are images that remain ingrained.

It is not quite the closed shop that the ‘Super League’ had in mind, but the door is still left only a few inches ajar.

The Pedro Mendes strike against Manchester City that sparked the ‘Great Escape’ will be played until time immemorial.

When looking back at memorable games I have witnessed at Fratton Park over the past 54 years, the likes of Fulham, QPR, Charlton, Bristol City and Brighton – along with many others – spring to mind.

Then there was the 2010 Wembley semi-final triumph over Tottenham that, given the circumstances, many fans believe to be a better achievement than lifting the trophy itself.

There were standout moments

It still rankles that we were robbed

That latter contest is highly significant because like Reggie Perrin, we cocked one last snook before discarding our Premier League attire on the shoreline and performing a backstroke down the divisions in order to rediscover our identity. It was all so much more fun facing Arsenal in two pulsating ties in 1971, Tottenham in three barnstorming Milk Cup match-ups the following decade and, also in the 1980s, Liverpool on that evening in Merseyside which saw the city of Portsmouth left deserted. Those were games when our opponents were still very much big clubs, but without a delusion of grandeur so high they looked down their noses at us. Outside of our Premier League years, there have not been too many meetings with sides that make up the so-called ‘big six’. So when the ‘Super League’ concept is undoubtedly resurrected a few years down the line, these occasional cold callers won’t be missed if they don’t come knocking anymore. @Pompey

FROM THE ARCHIVE

THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, INSPIRED BY OUR LAST ARTICLE, WE FEATURE A SPORT OTHER THAN FOOTBALL AT FRATTON PARK… Not sure I’m following you. I remember a vote to stage rugby league at Fratton Park? Well done, that was in 1980 and was comprehensively lost, but it’s not that, although Fratton Park did stage rugby union in 1924, when Hampshire lost to the touring All Blacks. This story has something to do with Pompey fan Harry Garcia, who chaired the SOS Pompey campaign in 1976. Hang on. Wasn’t he a boxing promoter? He certainly was! On ‘Whit Monday’ in 1948, he presented a ‘Grand All-Star International Boxing Tournament’ at Fratton Park – only the secondever, with the first being held in June 1916 – and we have the handbill promoting the contest…

Was the event a commercial success? Alas not. Just 8,000 people attended and Garcia was reported to be ‘rather disappointed’ by the turnout. Prime ringside ticket prices of 63 shillings – £3.15 in modern money, but nearly £120 when inflation is considered – might have had something to do with it. To be fair, punters could get in for five shillings to stand and watch. The noble art has never been staged at the ground since. A third occasion is overdue… Thanks to Paul Boynton, Bob Beech and Chris Gibbs, who helped with the compilation of this article.

‘Whit Monday’ – what’s that? Whit Monday is the day after Whit Sunday, which is the seventh Sunday after Easter, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's disciples. Until 1971, it was a bank holiday in England, when it officially moved to the last Monday in May, although the arrangement had been trialled since 1965. Anyway, we digress… The wonders of Wikipedia, eh? So, how international was ‘international’? Well, ‘Anglo-French’ might have been a more accurate description. Of the six bouts on the card, there were two French boxers – bantamweight Georges Mousse, ‘No 1 contender for the French title’ – and flyweight Emil Famechon, similarly billed. The rest of the boxers were drawn from all over England. Famechon’s opponent Dickie O’Sullivan, from Finsbury Park, was billed as ‘London’s Toy Bulldog’, which doesn’t sound very fierce, to me… Quite. What was top of the bill? A middleweight bout of eight three-minute rounds between Eastleigh’s Vince Hawkins (pictured), the ‘Official British Champion’, and Mark Hart from Croydon, the ‘Southern Area Champion’. However, according to the Hampshire Telegraph report of the event, Hart pulled out late on – ‘indisposed’ apparently – and was substituted by Bert Sanders from Kilburn. He put up the ‘fight of his life’, but class told and Hawkins’ ‘accurate punching to the body’ saw him win comfortably on points.

The Pompey History Society is a charitable organisation looking to preserve and conserve the club’s archive. It welcomes donations, including of memorabilia. For more information contact history@pompeyfc.co.uk or follow @PompeyHistory on Twitter.

POMPEY WIN REGIONAL COMMUNITY AWARD

ortsmouth Football Club and Pompey in the P Community (PitC) are proud to have won the Your Move Community Club of the Year award for the South-East & South region.

It recognises the work done by the club and its affiliated charity during the Covid enforced lockdowns over the past year. Within days of the first one being announced, food parcels and hot meals were being organised for the most vulnerable members of our community, while PitC sorted and delivered 500 food parcels a week. The Blue Kitchen concept started when it was realised that some of the recipients did not know how to prepare any of the contents of these parcels to make nutritious hot meals. So instead, meals were prepared at the charity’s premises – located a stone’s throw from Fratton Park – with 4,000 being distributed in total, along with 6,000 food parcels. Pompey players and staff joined volunteers from PitC in every aspect of the process, from sorting donations to helping with the cooking and delivering to grateful members of the public. The idea then stared to evolve, with Zoom cooking classes helping to promote healthy lifestyles and provide education, all at a time when face-to-face contact was restricted. These classes featured Ben Close, Callum Johnson, Mark Catlin and Kev the Kitman, and were broadcast on the club’s social media channels.

portsmouthfc.co.uk

And the Blue Kitchen project has since held Cancer Recovery and Into Work courses, respectively helping people recover from serious illness and learn new skills in order to gain employment. Easter holiday sessions also proved extremely popular, with children learning to cook simple recipes and trying new foods. At the recent EFL Awards ceremony, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports, Pompey were pitted against the other regional winners – Blackburn (North West), Bristol Rovers (South West & Wales), Port Vale (Midlands), Sunderland (North East & Yorkshire) and Watford (London) – with Port Vale claiming the overall prize. Clare Martin, PitC’s CEO, said: “Our response to the Covid pandemic has been a huge team effort and out of that adversity, we have created the Blue Kitchen project, which will be part of our community delivery moving forward. “Learning how to cook a nutritious hot meal for yourself is a basic skill, which so many people are not given the opportunity to learn, and we aim to educate the people of Portsmouth, so that our population is healthier in the coming years. Winning this award is a fitting accolade for everyone who helped make it possible.” If you would like to know more about Blue Kitchen and what current courses are available, please contact Gavin Randall on (023) 9272 8899 or email gavin.randall@pompeyitc.org.uk

ACADEMY if it’s aligned with the strategy of the entire club and I know he’s very keen for that to happen, as I am. I need to have a good idea of the kind of player characteristics he’s looking for, so we can focus on the attributes that appeal to him.”

ompey’s new academy P manager Greg Miller is looking to forge a close relationship with

the club’s first team coaching staff. He said: “I was delighted that Danny Cowley was at my final interview, so I had a really good chat with him and the other staff. All the meetings I’ve had since arriving here have been extremely positive and convinced me that this is an excellent opportunity. “The academy can be very useful

Miller also wants to make sure that everyone involved in the youth set-up at Fratton Park is eager to improve. He said: “It’s about maximising the development of the staff and ensuring nobody is resting on their laurels. Personally, I get up every single day with that mindset and want to help others do the same. “They may have high levels of qualifications, but that doesn’t mean we can’t constantly be looking to learn. If I can support the development of everyone in the academy and really drive it forwards, then it becomes a safe, fun and educational environment.” Visit cutt.ly/Academy2021Stats to view the latest Merit League table and academy team stats.

STEVE BONE’S

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND

this column all planned out. Iofhad It was going to be a countdown my favourite tales of fans'

tenuous claims to Pompey fame or remote links with Blues players. Then, literally a couple of hours before I was going to write it, came the awful news that Alan McLoughlin had died. It stopped me in my tracks in much the same way that Aaron Flahavan’s death did in 2001. We all knew Macca was unwell, but to hear he had passed away was still a huge shock. He was only 54 and just a quarter of a century ago, he was in the middle of a wonderful Fratton Park career. Furthermore, he had stayed in our Pompey lives since, through his work as a coach and radio summariser, and I think all that makes his loss harder to come to terms with. The night before the terrible news, I had been thinking – after an email exchange with a reader of one of my recent columns – about which team from the past I’d most want to watch again. I’ll be honest – Bally’s side of the 80s got the nod from me. But Jim Smith’s team of 92/93 would be a close second and Macca’s role in it, when he, Guy Whittingham, Paul Walsh and Mark Chamberlain so regularly dismantled opposition defences, would be a major reason for that. Few footballers’ Fratton playing careers last as long as Macca’s. It pretty much spanned the whole of the 1990s and that makes finding a sole highlight not only difficult, but needless. Why focus only on one important goal or matchwinning assist when there were so many? The first, of course, weeks after portsmouthfc.co.uk

MACCA WAS MANY THINGS TO MANY POMPEY PLAYERS, STAFF AND FANS AND I HOPE THAT IS SOME SOLACE TO HIS FAMILY AT THIS TIME he had arrived on loan, was the goal that beat Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup in 1992, which will forever remain the defining moment of one of the greatest afternoons I experienced on the old North Terrace. I’ve said here before that a 4-0 demolition of Tranmere in 92/93 is one of my favourite games of all-time and the scintillating football we saw that day had Macca at its heart. A year and a bit later, he was scoring an FA Cup hat-trick against Blackburn – then on their way to finishing second in the Premiership. Macca, quite apart from his heroics with Jack Charlton’s Ireland over the same period, was there for so many other big Pompey moments. A League Cup win at Everton in 1994, the escape from relegation at 26

Huddersfield in 1996, the cup win and conga at Leeds in 1997, another even greater escape in 1998 at Bradford (at the end of a remarkable run-in during which he’d been pivotal). The list could go on. And on. His record of 68 goals in 361 appearances has not been bettered by many midfielders before him – and won’t be beaten too often in the future. Beyond the statistics, Macca was many things to many Pompey players, staff and fans and I hope that is some solace to his family at this time. He had a great sense of humour, too. On one occasion when I asked Pompey fans for their instances of random spottings of Pompey players, Ade Smith tweeted me to say: “I once met Alan McLoughlin on a shuttle bus at Birmingham NEC. He was very pleasant and nothing remarkable happened.” Within minutes Macca saw this and replied: “I once met Ade Smith on a shuttle bus at Birmingham NEC. He was very pleasant and nothing remarkable happened.” RIP, Macca. I hope you get to take the penalties up there. @Pompey
