GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU ALL AS WE PREPARE FOR OUR SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AGAINST BLACKPOOL
ue to a precautionary medical D procedure, I will not be able to attend games or training sessions
for a short time. Joe Gallen will be taking temporary charge, assisted by Jake Wigley, while we have also brought in Nigel Gibbs, who is someone I know well and has got a lot of coaching ability and experience. There are also telephone and video links available to me, so we feel we can negotiate this period and that the players can still have the best possible preparation for our forthcoming fixtures. We beat Swindon in our last match here 11 days ago and were on top throughout the contest, although would have loved even more goals. We found a clinical edge earlier in the season and were able to put sides away, although couldn’t quite manage it on this occasion. We got the job done, though, and also kept a portsmouthfc.co.uk
clean sheet, with my goalkeeper not having too much to do. It was disappointing to then have a trip to Crewe postponed due to the cold weather before losing at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night. After taking the lead, we conceded some poor goals through individual errors and when you do that, you give yourself a mountain to climb. It’s unlike us to defend so sloppily and so we need to ensure we get the fundamentals right this afternoon. Blackpool are enjoying some good form of late and despite being in mid-table, they have a few games in hand and will certainly feel as though they can still make a push for the top six. They have plenty of quality throughout their squad and will no doubt take confidence from their win against us earlier in the season. It’s up to us to produce the performance 03
IT’S UNLIKE US TO DEFEND SO SLOPPILY AND SO WE NEED TO ENSURE WE GET THE FUNDAMENTALS RIGHT THIS AFTERNOON levels we know we’re capable of, making sure we’re tight at the back and creative going forward. I would like to offer a warm welcome to Neil Critchley, Colin Calderwood and Mike Garrity, as well as their staff and players. We wish them all a safe journey home after the game. Play up Pompey! POMPEY v BLACKPOOL
here is only one thing T currently consistent about the top of the League One table – and that is just how inconsistent it is.
Heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures, only one side has won all of their past three games, with even Peterborough’s recent run coming off the back of a draw and defeat.
They also have up to four games in hand on the sides around them, ensuring they might still enter the promotion picture. And they head to the south coast having enjoyed three victories from the past four matches, which includes Tuesday night’s narrow defeat of Rochdale.
Pompey have certainly been one of the guilty parties, having tasted success in just two of their six most recent outings.
Sullay Kaikai netted the only goal of the Bloomfield Road contest midway through the first half and the hosts never really looked like relinquishing their lead.
But even that stutter – which includes a midweek loss at struggling Bristol Rovers – has not seen them fall below fourth spot in the standings.
The Seasiders enjoy a better record on their own patch, but have still managed to secure four league triumphs on the road this term.
There is no doubt, however, that the Blues will be wanting to put things right at Fratton Park this afternoon against a mid-table Blackpool outfit.
They collected a maximum haul from contests at Burton (2-1), Peterborough (2-1), neighbours Fleetwood (1-0) and Wigan (5-0).
Neil Critchley’s men are in 14th position and comfortably clear of the drop zone, while only eight points adrift of the play-off berths.
And there were also wins at Eastbourne and Harrogate in the FA Cup to set up a third round clash with top-flight West Brom.

Blackpool pulled off a shock by going through on penalties following a 2-2 draw, but fell to another Premier League side, Brighton, at the next hurdle to exit the competition. Pompey suffered their first away league loss of the season when they visited Bloomfield Road at the start of December, with Keshi Anderson’s strike settling an otherwise turgid encounter. Covid-19 ensured there was no Fratton meeting between the sides last term, while the Blues were beaten 1-0 at home during the previous campaign. You have to go back to the League Two title-winning year to find a south coast success story, with Gareth Evans and Eoin Doyle getting the job done in February 2017. Not long after that, Pompey embarked on a superb run of form that ended in silverware. Perhaps a similar result today could also prove a catalyst for promotion…

into the non-league game to feature for Leigh RMI and Hyde. But he decided to retire in his mid-20s to concentrate on coaching, initially working in the academy back at Gresty Road. Critchley was one of only 16 people to obtain the new ‘UEFA Elite Badge’ in 2013 and soon joined the staff at Liverpool. He worked his way up to become head coach for their U23 side, while fixture congestion ensured he also took charge of the first team for cup ties against Aston Villa and Shrewsbury.

It was a contest befitting the soulless atmosphere inside an empty Bloomfield Road, with hardly any meaningful chances created at either end of the pitch. The only goal arrived midway through the second half, with Jerry Yates wisely leaving CJ Hamilton’s low centre for Keshi Anderson to drive into the net. Pompey tried to hit back and a spot of pinball

England international centreforward Mortensen scored a hat-trick in Blackpool’s 1953 Wembley FA Cup triumph. Turning professional in May 1938, he also appeared in the 1948 and 1951 finals and was top scorer in nine successive seasons. He was capped 25 times and netted 222 goals in 354 games for the Seasiders prior to joining Hull in November 1955, then had spells playing for Southport, Bath and Lancaster. Returning to Bloomfield Road as manager in February 1967, Mortensen signed Tony Green and Tommy Hutchison before being sacked in April 1969. He remained local until his death in May 1991. JIMMY ARMFIELD Three Lions right-back Armfield holds the Seasiders’ appearance record. Signing professional terms at Bloomfield Road in September 1954, he displaced Eddie Shimwell and helped the club finish as topflight runners-up 1955/56. He was a League Cup semi-finalist in portsmouthfc.co.uk
1961/62 and skippered the side to Division Two promotion success in 1969/70. Earning a club record 43 caps, Armfield netted six goals in 627 appearances prior to becoming Bolton manager in May 1971. He went on to take charge of Leeds and became a pundit for BBC Radio Five Live. Also working as technical adviser for The FA, he died in Blackpool in January 2018. ALAN BALL England World Cup winner Ball gained the first 14 of his 72 caps while at Blackpool, starring in the 1966 Wembley triumph. Beginning his professional career in May 1962, he became the club’s youngest league debutant and was sold to Everton for a record £110,000 in the summer of 1966. He impressed in their 1969/70 top-flight title success, then featured for Arsenal and Southampton before returning to Bloomfield Road as player/boss in July 1980. Scoring 49 goals in 164 outings overall, Ball later led Pompey to the top-flight in the first of two spells as manager, also taking charge of their south coast rivals, as well as Stoke, Exeter and Manchester City. He died in April 2007. PAUL STEWART Striker Stewart was capped three times by England after leaving the Seasiders. Turning professional at Bloomfield Road in October 1981, he was twice leading marksman and starred in the 1984/85 Division Four promotion success. Versatile winger Sinclair earned 12 England caps after leaving Blackpool and impressed at the 2002 World Cup. He penned professional terms in August 1990 and helped the Seasiders reach the Division Four play-off final in 1990/91, then secure promotion the following season. He netted 16 goals in 140 games before being sold to QPR in the summer of 1993. Returning to the Premier League with West Ham in a £2.3 million deal involving Iain Dowie and Keith Rowland at the beginning of 1998, Sinclair joined Manchester City in July 2003. A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR iven the sheer number of G games I played and the length of time that has passed,
I’m sad to say that many have since become a bit of a blur. So when well-meaning people mention a particular fixture I was involved in or save I made, I often have to nod and smile along with little or no recollection of what they’re talking about. Still, some of those stops must have been blinding given the descriptions I hear – and I’m more than happy to go along with that! I’m told about moments that happened at the likes of Oldham and Preston in the 1980s and 90s, so can only marvel at the minds of those who can store things away and recall them lucidly decades later. Funnily enough, however, I can remember my debut at
Rotherham in 1978 as though it happened yesterday – and I didn’t even have a save to make. But modern technology is a wonderful thing and regularly provides an opportunity for me to stir the old brain back into life. Somewhere in the magical land of YouTube is four hours of Pompey gems taken from the goals round-ups that were shown on local television. Not only does it reveal many of my highlights, it also lets me relive the odd horrific mistake when I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. This footage includes a couple of penalty saves I made to deny Peter Lorimer in a 3-1 victory over Leeds. The former Scotland international was approaching 40 and in his second spell with the club, so was way past his best.
The first kick came at the Milton End and the visiting fans were behind me as I dived to my left and beat away the shot, only for the ball to fall at the feet of John Sheridan, who tapped home the rebound. It is one of the worst feelings as a keeper when you keep out a spot-kick – especially from such a great player – only for someone to immediately capitalise. Still, I had the last laugh when Leeds were awarded another penalty in the second half. Oddly, Lorimer chose to go in the same direction and I made a similar save. This time, however, the ball bounced kindly to safety. Now, I am painstakingly trawling through this footage to discover more magic moments, hoping to unearth memories that I thought were lost forever.
ON THIS DAY FEBRUARY
20 1954 Reg Flewin (above) – who skippered Pompey to consecutive top-flight titles – made his final appearance for the club in an FA Cup fifth round draw at Bolton.
1960 The Blues slipped further into relegation trouble with a 2-0 home defeat to Huddersfield, although they finished the season one place above the Division Two drop zone.
1971 The Match of the Day cameras visited Fratton Park for a second tier clash between Pompey and Luton, with Don Givens grabbing the game’s only goal for the visitors.
1998 Terry Venables (above) hit back at claims he had left the Blues in financial ruin, exclaiming: “They’re crying like babies now it’s going wrong.”
2010 Pompey crashed back down to earth with a bump following their 4-1 FA Cup win at rivals Southampton the previous week, losing 2-1 to Stoke in the Premier League.
DID YOU KNOW? A new manager’s secretary was required after Alan Barnett was transferred to Grimsby in portsmouthfc.co.uk @Pompey December 1958, as the position had previously17been filled by the goalkeeper’s wife Julie.

MOORE’S MEMORIES IT CREATED A VISION OF SAM ALLARDYCE ON A PRE-LOCKDOWN SHOPPING SPREE AT FORTNUM & MASON, GIVEN THE SHEER QUANTITY OF CHINA HE WAS ALLEGEDLY ABOUT TO HURL
ne broadcaster described O Chris Martin’s winning FA Cup goal for Bristol City

against Pompey back in January as ‘the difference between the Championship and League One’.
It is rumoured that former Pompey manager Jim Smith was a major culprit in throwing teacups in the dressing room.
It was one extra lazy footballing cliché in a game that really does not need any more, so infested is it with meaningless phrases that are parroted incessantly up and down the country.
Whether fact or fiction, the act of bosses chucking crockery around has still obtained a legendary status, making for an easy thing for commentators to refer to whenever a side is drastically underperforming.
Indeed, it was a cracking effort from the striker to settle the third round tie, but it was neither typical of, nor restricted to, the second tier. Ryan Williams’ finish against AFC Wimbledon last month was certainly deserving of equal praise, while two of Marcus Harness’ goals at Burton earlier in the season were drooled over in the Quest studio when the highlights were shown that evening.
This was taken to new heights in the clash between West Brom and Fulham a few weeks ago, with the man behind the microphone mentioning the possibility on no less than four occasions. It created a vision of Sam Allardyce on a pre-lockdown shopping spree at Fortnum & Mason, given the sheer quantity of china he was allegedly about to hurl during the interval.
Going back a few years, I’m sure everyone still remembers Conor Chaplin’s moment of magic against Wycombe, when he lobbed the ball over one player and then headed it into the net – a piece of genius worthy of occurring at the highest level.
In reality, health and safety has long since put an end to such half-time tantrums, with the paper cups that are used hardly creating the same macho impact a coach probably wishes to display in such circumstances to instil fear into his players.
below – and they are certainly not exclusive to any particular division.
There is another platitude for these kind of goals that contradicts the former. A pundit will often exclaim that had it been netted in the Premier League, it would be replayed over and over again.
Leicester’s James Maddison was recently asked about his team’s chances in the battle for the topflight title and at least admitted in advance to using well-worn remarks. There were three in one sentence as he revealed nobody at the club even looked at either the table or fixture list, preferring to take one game at a time.
You see these fantastic strikes regularly when watching games in Leagues One and Two – or
One imagines he is privately thinking: “Blimey, if we can see off Aston Villa, Arsenal and Brighton

FROM THE ARCHIVE
THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE HAVE COME ACROSS THE PROGRAMME FOR THE CIVIC CELEBRATION OF A TROPHY-WINNING TEAM… A few to choose from then. There are not many clubs in our area that have had many of those! Now, now. Let’s play nicely. However, you can’t argue with facts, I suppose. Anyway, we digress. This particular event was on Sunday, May 11 in 2003 – a week after Pompey had completed the season in triumphant, table-topping style, winning 5-0 at Bradford on the final day to clinch a recordbreaking campaign. The most points (98) and goals (97) in our history and Division One’s top scorer in Svetoslav Todorov (26) were among only some of the achievements for Harry Redknapp’s side. I’m sure the local politicians wanted to share in the glory! You’re punchy today and no mistake. To be fair, Portsmouth City Council has a long tradition of feting the club’s teams when they do well. Civic receptions were held for the two top-flight title-winning sides in 1949 and 1950 for instance. The next one wouldn’t be for 30 years to celebrate promotion from Division Four, then again in 1983 for the third tier championship and in 1987 for promotion back to the first division. We were overdue one again then I suppose. Tell us what happened... It was certainly a busy afternoon. Guests assembled at the Guildhall at 11.45am and then players and officials of the club were welcomed at noon by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, and
the leader and chief executive of the council. The party then adjourned for a buffet lunch in the civic reception rooms. Can’t beat a bit of finger food! True, but there was no time to spare. I suspect a few doggy bags were prepared as by 12.40pm, everyone had to be in the auditorium for speeches and the presentation of a Shield of Achievement, which was offered to then Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric. Compere for the event was Roger Higgins, who still does tours of Fratton Park to this day. Anything else? What about the fans? At 1.15pm the party then boarded three vintage open-topped buses. Your invitation wristband dictated the bus you were on. Pink were the media on the lead bus, blue were the football club on the second bus and red were for other guests, while, curiously, gold meant no bus at all. There was an optional shuttle bus for them to Southsea Common instead, where the team were presented to the fans at 2pm after a ride through the city. All in all, a good day. Thanks to Chris Gibbs from the Pompey History Society for his help in compiling this article.
The Pompey History Society is a charitable organisation looking to preserve and conserve the club’s archive. It welcomes donations, including of memorabilia. For more information contact history@pompeyfc.co.uk or follow @PompeyHistory on Twitter.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: STOP AND SEARCH
t is important that members of the public – and Iwhen especially young people – are aware of their rights it comes to any dealings with the police.
a wallet or purse for future reference. There is also a downloadable version that can be stored on your phone.
With this in mind, the Race Confidence Community Group – which is made up of members from the local police, young people’s advocates and community groups – meets regularly to discuss a wide variety of topics.
The cards have already been circulated to the Red Cross, Stand Up To Racism and the Portsmouth Black History Committee, who will be delivering them to all the local colleges over the next few weeks.
At one of these recent summits, there was a concern that young people were becoming agitated and aggressive when they were stopped in the street because they didn’t know their rights or what the police had the power to do. So, Pompey in the Community (PitC) took up the task of creating an information card that could be given out to provide some education on what to expect.
It is hoped that this small card, containing information about what rights you have and what to expect, will prepare young people more in the event that they are stopped, so that the situation can remain calm and have a more positive outcome. It also contains details of useful websites should you wish to make a complaint. If you would like more information about the cards please contact PitC’s diversity, equality and inclusion lead Duke Harrison-Hunter by emailing duke@pompeyitc.org.uk
The cards have now been produced. They are similar in shape and size to the fixture lists that Pompey distribute every season and so can be easily kept in

2020/21 FIXTURES
ompey produced a muchP improved display, but still lost 2-0 at title-chasing Oxford in the Youth Alliance League.
Gatlin O’Donkor fired the hosts ahead midway through the first half, while Adam Smith wrapped things up at the death. There were chances for the Blues, though, with Harrison Brook and Izzy Kaba going closest to finding the target. Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “I was really pleased with the players because they worked hard and, overall, performed very well. They’re always tough games when you face Oxford, but
“Before the match I’d asked them to run hard and make their mark – and that’s exactly what they did. We ticked most of the boxes and my only criticism is that we lacked a cutting edge, although did create some opportunities around their box. “Defending set-pieces has been a real weakness of ours lately, but we were much better and looked solid. It was a really good game of football to watch at under-18 level and on another day, we might have come away with a better result.” Pompey: Manderson; Setters, Cadman, Kaba, Rew; JewittWhite (Bridgman 70), Bell; Dawson (Hughes 65), Lee, Brook; Anderson (Gifford 81) Visit cutt.ly/Academy2021Stats to view the latest Youth Alliance League table and academy team stats.

STEVE BONE’S
VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND f you’ll forgive a little selfIweeks indulgence (as you do most in this column), I’d like to fill in a few more gaps in my list of 40 memorable games from 40 seasons watching Pompey – this strange and current one being my 40th.
In past programmes I've covered my first 12 campaigns, so today I must deal with a mixed bag that the mid-90s threw at us. With my 91/92 and 92/93 picks behind me, the temptation is to look at the rest of the decade and think ‘well, not much happened there’. But given that this project is partly about remembering the matches other than the obvious ones, there’s always a stand-out game, even in the dullest of seasons.
FROM 95/96, TERRY FENWICK’S FIRST FULL SEASON AS BOSS, I’M AGAIN GOING From 93/94, when much of which TO SIDESTEP THE had a bit of an ‘After the Lord OBVIOUS
From 95/96, Terry Fenwick’s first full season as boss, I’m again going to sidestep the obvious – in this case that joyous ‘Great Escape’ at Huddersfield, when Deon Burton kept us up and the club's bosses said such last-day dramas must never be allowed to happen again (that went well...).
about the rest of the season, the better.
Instead, my memorable game would be a tense, tight 1-0 victory at home to Norwich courtesy of a John Durnin strike. It was a fourth straight success and – as at Sunderland two seasons earlier – we thought we’d cracked it as we went off to enjoy Christmas, not realising we’d only win one of the next seven.
Mayor’s Show’ feel to it, I’m going to avoid selecting either of those wonderful cup trips to the northwest, which saw us draw 3-3 at Blackburn and 2-2 at Manchester United – at that time the two best teams in the land – and opt for another away-day, of which there have not yet been too many in my game-a-season high points. On November 6 1993, we went to Roker Park – which was always among my favourites of the old grounds that are sadly no more – on a fantastic run of form which had us believing we were going to make up for our promotion miss of six months earlier. Fresh in our minds was the nineman, five-goal Roker disaster of six months earlier which had cost us automatic promotion – and revenge was sweet, as goals by Paul Walsh and Stuart Doling secured a 2-1 win. The less said portsmouthfc.co.uk
From the 94/95 campaign I’m going for another venture north – to Everton in the League Cup. We won 3-2 at Goodison Park thanks to a Gerry Creaney double and a goal from Dashing Dane Bjorn 'Benny' Kristensen. Given that you can count on not many fingers the number of times Pompey have triumphed away to top-flight teams when not in the same tier themselves, you can see why this was special. It was the first leg of two and we got through with a 1-1 draw at Fratton a fortnight later. As with the previous term, things didn’t go stunningly well from that point onwards, so much so that poor old Jim Smith was out of a job four months after masterminding the unwrapping of the Toffees. 26
More in an upcoming column – and by the way, my pick from 96/97 will NOT be the FA Cup win at Leeds. You can only select so many victories over Leeds in any series, I find. In the meantime, please do email me at stevebonepfc@googlemail.com or tweet @stevebone1 with your favourite games from the seasons mentioned above. @Pompey
