OUR LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE TAKING PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SEES BRISTOL ROVERS VISITING FRATTON PARK THIS AFTERNOON
t’s nice to arrive back at Fratton Iaway Park following three consecutive games. Our recent run of fixtures seemed favourable, but with football being the way it is, the points we were hoping for unfortunately didn’t materialise. It really is a case of four cup finals now – starting this afternoon. The classic football adage is that you can’t concern yourself with what the opposition are doing. I certainly think that’s the case and we have to simply focus on our own performances over the next fortnight. Having won a major trophy more recently than Tottenham, we were bitterly disappointed not to receive our invitation to join the European Super League! In all seriousness, the proposed plans
appear to have died almost as quickly as they were announced last Sunday. It proved to be a reminder of the power that football fans possess in protecting the traditions of the game that we all love. I would like to welcome Greg Miller as our new academy manager. He was outstanding throughout the interview and recruitment process and has impressed us all with his energy and enthusiasm during his first few days working for the club. Football clubs are no different to any other business in the sense that you’re constantly looking to evolve, so I look forward to working with Greg closely to implement his visions for the academy. I’m aware that there has been a lot of discussion and speculation about the future of our young players. We are still in discussions with some of our scholars and will make an announcement once this has been completed. For those who are departing the club,
HAVING WON A MAJOR TROPHY MORE RECENTLY THAN TOTTENHAM, WE WERE BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED NOT TO RECEIVE OUR INVITATION TO JOIN THE EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE! however, we wish them nothing but the best moving forward. As always, we will continue to support them as required as they embark on the next stage of their respective careers. Finally, a warm welcome to everyone from Bristol Rovers who has made the journey down to the south coast today. Mark Catlin Chief Executive

@Pompey
HEAD COACH
DANNY COWLEY GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU ALL AS WE GET READY TO FACE BRISTOL ROVERS IN THE LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AT FRATTON PARK he past four games have been T frustrating and disappointing in terms of the outcome. We have
to learn. Everyone in the dressing room is aligned in what we want to achieve and we are all working towards that ambition. We know how much you want Pompey to be successful and this inspires us every single day.
come up short in all of them and the fact that we are bemoaning small margins is actually the problem. Our ambition moving forward is to create a team that doesn’t rely on getting on the right side of tight fixtures. We want to control matches, play with rhythm and dominate teams.
While we have performed well between the penalty boxes, we have lacked a creative spark and inspiration in and around our opponents’ goal. Other than the MK Dons game, we have controlled both possession and territory, without being ruthless or clinical in the decisive moments. We have enjoyed 70 per cent possession in five of my eight matches here, as well as a significant number of final third and box entries, but not had the chance or goal conversion that we would expect. Against the ball we have to keep working on the management of our defensive line, while also improving the 1v1 moments and defending the space in behind. Two clean sheets in eight games is not enough for a team with our aspirations. To have so little time on the training pitch over those past four fixtures has been a significant factor. During our first three matches, the schedule afforded us good preparation time between each one. As a new group, this was vital in allowing us to get our game idea across to the players, while connecting the different relationships and developing the cohesion necessary to produce an efficient display. Since then, however, we have had little time on the training pitch and where we have just come together, this portsmouthfc.co.uk
IT IS NEVER A NICE FEELING WHEN YOU LET YOURSELF AND EACH OTHER DOWN. IT IS WORSE STILL WHEN YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE LET THE SUPPORTERS DOWN
We are aware that the challenge to reach the play-offs is tougher than ever, but are determined to find a way! We are completely focused on achieving what we set out to do when we first arrived. This was never going to be easy and we certainly cannot do it without you and your unconditional support. We are going to be absolutely relentless in trying to achieve this goal. Stick with us, enjoy the ride – we are going to make this a football club that you can all be proud of again! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Joey Barton and his Bristol Rovers team to Fratton Park for today’s game. Play up Pompey! Danny
has hurt us. We haven’t had the time on the grass to keep building on the idea and work on the concepts that are so important to our performance. This is not an excuse, just the facts. We have all felt the disappointment this week. To lose back-to-back games at a pivotal time in the season is always hard to take. It is never a nice feeling when you let yourself and each other down. It is worse still when you know that you have let the supporters down. We have to shoulder the responsibility, accept the criticism and make sure that we respond in the right way. There is total trust in the players’ attitude, work ethic and humility 05

POMPEY v BRISTOL ROVERS
ompey’s play-off aspirations P were dealt a blow by defeat to the side sitting bottom of the League One table on Tuesday evening.
That result ensured Swindon kept alive their slim hopes of survival and saw them replaced in 24th position by Bristol Rovers. So the Blues will be hoping for a much better outcome when they welcome the Pirates to the south coast for today’s lunchtime encounter. Other results ensured Danny Cowley’s men dropped just one place to eighth in the standings and are a single point adrift of the top six. They do have a game in hand on seventh-placed Oxford, but Blackpool and Charlton directly above – at least one of whom they need to catch – have played a match fewer. It is a much simpler story for the visitors, who require a win to have any chance of avoiding their fate being sealed this afternoon. portsmouthfc.co.uk
The Gas are nine points from safety with just three fixtures remaining, so it would take a miracle to avoid the drop into League Two. They were just above the relegation zone when Joey Barton became the club’s third permanent manager of the season in February, following in the footsteps of Ben Garner and Paul Tisdale. But they were in freefall and the former England international has been unable to turn things around, labelling some of his players ‘fake footballers’ following Tuesday’s loss to MK Dons. Barton has guided his side to just three victories and they head to Portsea Island on a run of seven defeats from the past nine games. It leaves Rovers preparing for a first campaign in the basement for five years, with Lee Brown and Ellis Harrison having helped them secure back-to-back promotions into League One between 2014 and 2016. They finished a comfortable 08
14th at the end of the truncated 2019/20 campaign and were a healthy 13 points clear of danger. But they have been hampered this term by their terrible away form, with only fellow strugglers Northampton equalling their meagre tally of three wins on the road. There have been maximum hauls collected at Lincoln (2-1), Shrewsbury (1-0) and AFC Wimbledon (4-2) – and they all occurred before the turn of the year. The Pirates did beat Pompey 3-1 on their own patch back in February, however, when head of recruitment Tommy Widdrington was in caretaker charge. Covid-19 ensured there was no meeting at Fratton Park last season, while the previous one saw the Blues battle from behind to claim a 1-1 draw. But if Danny Cowley’s troops want to maintain their dreams of reaching the Championship, then surely all three points will be required today. @Pompey
It was during that time in the north-west that he won his sole senior cap for England, featuring as a late substitute in a friendly defeat by Spain. Barton went on to appear for Newcastle, QPR, Rangers and Burnley, as well as having a spell on loan with French topflight outfit Marseille. He retired from playing after being released from the Clarets and was given a first managerial role by Fleetwood in the summer of 2018.
MANAGER Joey Barton
The Manchester City youth product made more than 150 appearances for the club and turned out for them in the Premier League.
Barton guided the Cod Army to a mid-table finish in his first season at the club and then led them to the play-offs last term, but departed in January and arrived at Bristol Rovers the following month.

Pompey 1 Marquis 26 League One February 16 2021 Pompey slipped to just their second league defeat of the season on the road, with a poor performance costing them at struggling Bristol Rovers. Another positive away result appeared on the cards midway through the first half when George Byers combined well with Ryan Williams, who cut the ball back for John Marquis to slide home. But instead they found themselves trailing at the break, as former Hawks striker Jonah Ayunga took advantage of some sloppy defending to net twice.

Centre-half Warren captained Bristol Rovers to the 1952/53 Division Three (South) title. Born locally, he turned professional at Eastville Stadium in March 1936 and made his debut in that month’s 1-0 defeat at home to QPR before guesting for Leeds, Bristol City and Bath during the Second World War. Ever-present on five occasions, he became the club’s regular penaltytaker and formed a notable half-back line with Jackie Pitt and Peter Sampson. Scoring 31 goals in 493 appearances, Warren hung up his boots in May 1956 and became licensee of The Trident in Downend. He died in March 1988. PHIL ROBERTS Welsh U23 right-back Roberts appeared in every match for the Pirates during two consecutive seasons. He penned professional terms in November 1968 and starred as they twice reached the League Cup fifth round, then lifted the Watney Cup in 1972. Netting seven times in 210 games, portsmouthfc.co.uk
he joined Pompey for a then club record fee of £55,000 in May 1973. Roberts gained four full caps for his country and moved to Hereford in the summer of 1978. He signed for Exeter to play under former team-mate Brian Godfrey in February 1979, featuring in their 1980/81 FA Cup run, then turned out for Chard, Taunton and Yeovil, becoming a self-employed builder in Whimple. TONY PULIS Tough-tackling defender Pulis had two spells at Bristol Rovers. He made his debut while still an apprentice in a 1-1 draw at their city rivals in August 1975, returning from a year with Hong Kong outfit Happy Valley in June 1982 to score five goals in 162 outings overall prior to joining Newport County in the summer of 1984. Moving to Bournemouth two years later, he helped them secure the Division Three title in 1986/87, then had a spell at Gillingham. Pulis returned to the Cherries in August 1990 and became boss, since taking charge of the Gills, Bristol City, Pompey, Stoke, Plymouth, West Brom, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday. GARY MABBUTT Versatile central defender Mabbutt was capped 16 times by England after leaving the Pirates. A son of former Bristol Rovers favourite Ray Mabbutt, he turned professional at Eastville Stadium in January 1976 and was ever-present in 1980/81. A diabetic, he struck 12 times in 147 matches before being sold to Tottenham for £100,000 in the summer of 1982. Mabbutt was an influential figure in their 1984 UEFA Cup final triumph, then 11
was an FA Cup finalist in 1987 and skippered the Londoners to Wembley glory against Nottingham Forest in 1991. Awarded the MBE in the 1994 New Year’s Honours List, he is now a Spurs ambassador. IAN HOLLOWAY
Winger Holloway was both a player and manager at Bristol Rovers. Penning professional terms in March 1981, he featured in successive promotion challenges and moved to Wimbledon in July 1985. He appeared for Brentford before returning to the Pirates in the summer of 1987 and was ever-present as they won the Division Three title and were Leyland DAF Cup finalists in 1989/90. Following boss Gerry Francis to QPR for £230,000 in August 1991, Holloway returned to take charge at the Memorial Stadium in May 1996, netting 51 goals in 476 games overall. He has since occupied the dug-out at QPR, Plymouth, Leicester, Blackpool, Crystal Palace, Millwall and Grimsby. @Pompey

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR s Pompey entered a new A era under the Cowley brothers, I noticed a not-so-
subtle change of tack. Leading Ipswich 2-1 at Fratton Park with five minutes remaining of their first match in charge, the hosts had the ball almost exclusively in their opponents’ half of the field. Indeed, when the final whistle blew, they were up by the corner flag and comfortably holding on to claim all three points. I can assure everyone that for a goalkeeper, there is no more refreshing sight than seeing the action taking place as far away from you as possible – particularly when the seconds are ticking away and you are closing in on a victory. Don’t believe all this guff from those who say they would rather be involved, kept busy and able to warm their hands. For the majority of the stoppers’ union,
doing as little work as possible only increases your chances of maintaining a clean sheet – the holy grail for any player stationed between the sticks. As I never tire of explaining, the hardest work on my debut at Rotherham as a 16-year-old was pushing the kit trolley back onto the team coach after the game. Assistant manager Frank Burrows had done that to ensure I remained grounded. Grounded?! My feet hadn’t needed to leave the turf all afternoon. If you can’t keep the ball up the other end of the pitch, then having a rock-solid defence is another sound method of ensuring you’re not overworked. The likes of Noel Blake and Billy Gilbert kept me well protected back in the day. If you look at the number of shut-outs we enjoyed from that
era, then I think it backs up my point, although I suppose there might have been the odd match or two when I was able to claim a share of the credit for keeping our opponents at bay. I have never subscribed to the idea that once taking the lead, you bring everyone back to desperately try to hold onto it. That infamous Coventry clash here last season is perhaps a prime example of how attack can be the best form of defence. Your back-line can become overworked, as does the keeper and your whole mentality changes to stopping the other team, rather than doing more damage yourself. If the ball is kept away from your net, then it can’t damage you. You can, of course, still lose matches, but anything to ensure an easy life for the goalie.
ON THIS DAY APRIL
24 1965 Jimmy Dickinson (above) made his final Pompey appearance on his 40th birthday and was carried from the pitch after a 1-1 draw at Northampton secured Division Two survival.
1971 The Blues were missing five first team regulars, but still managed to draw 1-1 at Birmingham, with Ray Hiron cancelling out Bob Latchford’s opener for the hosts.
1972 Norman Piper and Eoin Hand were on target as Pompey battled from behind to beat Blackpool and ensure they would remain in the second tier for another season.
2005 Harry Redknapp endured a miserable Fratton return, as his Southampton side were thrashed 4-1 – with a Lomana LuaLua (above) brace the highlight – in the ‘Demolition Derby’.
2010 Pompey twice fought from behind to secure a 2-2 Premier League draw at Bolton, with Aruna Dindane the goalscoring hero.

MOORE’S MEMORIES THIS REVELATION SAW FRANK BOUGH AND THE TELEPRINTER CONSIGNED TO THE MEDIA SCRAPHEAP OVERNIGHT s I sat there on my bed, A beer in hand, watching John Marquis slot home a late
penalty to secure a 3-1 victory at Sunderland, it dawned on me just how far technology had come. The usual protocol for this fixture was an overnight stay in the hotel opposite the Stadium of Light or a five-hour trek home afterwards, desperately hoping to make last orders. Here we had the best of both worlds. I could watch the whole match live from the best seat in the house, while able to drink alcohol in view of the pitch and still be in the local by 6pm. Even the time that I flew home from Wearside, I didn’t pitch up at a Havant hostelry until gone 8pm. Following Pompey away began in the late 1960s via the BBC Grandstand teleprinter. I would religiously – and this is the key word, as I would often be praying for a positive outcome – take my place in front of the telly at 4.30pm on Saturday, waiting to see the chunky typewriter clunking through all the full-time scores. As the Blues didn’t win an awful lot on the road in those days – or even score many goals – if the machine chugged up ‘Blackburn 2’, there was not too much anticipation to see our part of the result appear. But there was a wonderful, rarely experienced, feeling in 1969, when my resignation at spotting ‘Aston Villa 3’ was instantly wiped away by unadulterated joy when it was followed by ‘Portsmouth 5’. It lives portsmouthfc.co.uk
with me until this very day. In 1972 I discovered the phenomenon of local radio, where reports from matches were relayed back from the ground every 15 minutes or when a goal was scored. This revelation saw Frank Bough and the teleprinter consigned to the media scrapheap overnight. All things considered, it was just an extended method of hearing how Pompey had lost on their travels, only the medicine was fed to you in small doses, rather than with one big gulp at the final whistle. The presenter would announce: “There’s been a goal at Scunthorpe, so let’s head straight over to the Old Show Ground.” You then braced yourself for the inevitable northern drone of the homebased reporter telling you it was bad news for the visiting fans. 19
By the time the side were trying to escape to the top-flight under Ball – with two painful failures before it was third time lucky – things had moved on to Ceefax or Teletext, depending on which channel you preferred. A crew of us would go to a mate’s house with a box of beers and stare at the television screen for 90 minutes, waiting for the page to refresh. Again, this was simply another innovation that enabled us to see Pompey lose away. And so, like a book on the history of trains, we have shunted through the different ages of following footballing fortunes, right through to mobile phones, Jeff Stelling’s Soccer Saturday and now iFollow. Nevertheless, amidst the wonder of all these incredible technological advancements, there is still nothing quite like the feeling of actually being there. @Pompey

FROM THE ARCHIVE
THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE’VE FOUND A BOX MARKED ‘FINANCIAL CRISES’…
I expect that box is quite full! Which one are you focusing on? Now, now, although to be fair, there have been a few to choose from. The one we’re focusing on was the second major financial crisis the club endured. The first had been in 1912, when Pompey were relegated to the second division of the Southern League, facing expensive trips to the South Wales valleys in consequence. The club was restructured, won promotion and adopted blue shirts for the first time. The Portsmouth Football Company was founded and would serve the club for 87 years. 87 years? That takes us to 1999. Didn’t we learn something about that one the other week? You’re right, we did – players being put up for sale for a song. However, this crisis was in the meantime. The Portsmouth Football Company had been taken over by John Deacon in 1973, when he became the majority shareholder. He had pumped huge amounts of money into the club to get it out of the second division. By the late summer of 1976, it was. Unfortunately, it was in the third division…
Sounds interesting! Did we make Top of the Pops? Alas not, but the first team squad – one of the players Peter Denyer recalled the occasion – led by manager Ian St John all trooped off to a small studio at the old Radio Victory building in Fratton Road to record a song, written by G Jones, called ‘Pompey, City With a Heart’ (it’s on YouTube!). The melody was carried by – get this – The Southampton All Stars Orchestra (directed by Tony Linford), as the south came together to save the club. The Milton Glee Club accompanied them. Whitbread, who had a brewery in Queen Street, sponsored the disc and Solent Records in Ryde released it. By the spring of 1977, the fund had reached its target and was wound up. The club were saved. Poptastic!
I remember that story as well. The white kit, big signings, new club song… Yes, quite. The financial storm clouds were gathering and in late September 1976, it was announced Pompey needed to raise £25,000 urgently or else they would go out of business. Backed by The News and led by local businessman and fan Harry Garcia, the SOS Pompey campaign was launched and fans – not for the first time – pitched in to save their club. How did they do it? All sorts of things. For instance, a fan called Gary Wren did some sponsored press-ups (raising £37.51) and a couple of Royal Marines (Atkins and Levey) yomped their way to Land’s End to raise cash. The club ‘sold’ square feet of the Fratton turf – including the pictured one that was bought by a Josh Nunn from Gosport – and sold special Silver Jubilee medallions to mark the Queen’s 25 years on the throne. The one pictured (No. 235) is mine. And then there was a gramophone record…
The Pompey History Society is a charitable organisation looking to preserve and conserve the club’s archive. It welcomes donations, including of memorabilia. For more information contact history@pompeyfc.co.uk or follow @PompeyHistory on Twitter.
POMPEY PEDALS
ompey Pedals is an inclusive cycling project P from Pompey in the Community (PitC), which has been relaunched following the change in
Tuesdays and Thursdays (9.15am-3.30pm). The sessions are run by a group of loyal and dedicated volunteers, alongside a main project lead who represents the charity. Some of the volunteers have undergone bike maintenance training, ensuring they can keep the equipment in good working order.
government restrictions as we continue the path out of lockdown.
The aim is to engage adults and children with disabilities and differing needs in a quality activity that is socially, physically and mentally stimulating.
Most people who take part cycle around the parks, but a few will venture a little further afield, perhaps onto the coastal path towards Hilsea Lido or down towards Southsea seafront. Many come along with their families or carers, who can join in either on a separate bike or one of our twin machines.
It enables mixed groups and families to share the experience of cycling together, using regular and specially adapted bikes and equipment – and unlike most other schemes, PitC’s is free for all users. The project has been running successfully for the past four years and was formerly known as ‘WheelsForAll’, but has now returned with funding from the Places to Ride fund from British Cycling and the Return to Play fund from Sport England.
There is no need to book to use the bikes – just turn up and get pedalling! If you would like to volunteer to help with the programme, please send your contact details to info@pompeyitc.org.uk or call (023) 9272 8899 during office hours. More volunteers are particularly needed for sessions at Bransbury Park on Mondays and Fridays.
Participants can access the bikes and equipment from two sites in Portsmouth – Bransbury Park on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (9.15am12.30pm) and the Mountbatten Centre on

ACADEMY
P
ompey have appointed Greg Miller as the club’s new academy manager. The 45-yearold previously worked as head of academy coaching at Barnsley and has also spent time with Rangers and the Scottish FA.
“First and foremost, I want to ensure we have the best environment possible for young people to develop in – that’s my priority. Of course it would be great if all of them progress through to the first team, but you have to realise that won’t be the case. My job then is to make sure – for the players and their families – that our academy is one that helps them to develop as a human being and as a footballer.”
Merit League leaders Pompey suffered a 1-0 defeat at Gillingham in their latest outing. Academy coach Shaun North said: “We were a little bit younger than our opponents and started with four members of the under-16s He said: “It’s a role that I’ve been on the pitch. We had quite a few aspiring towards for some time now really promising chances that and have tried to develop my skill unfortunately we couldn’t take, but set so I’m equipped for it. STEVE BONE’S
VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND his could be more of a list T than a column. You see, I have left myself 18 matches to
back on and after a wretched run, Joel Ward and John Utaka secured a 2-2 draw with Leeds. 11/12: A 3-1 home success over Doncaster, the first game I took my son – then aged nine – to that he really took in, understood and enjoyed.
talk about in one article. I’ve had all season to meander through 40 campaigns of watching Pompey, picking out one memorable game from each one, and I appear only to have got to 2001/02 so far.
12/13: Sheffield United at home (3-0) in warm sunshine and in the glow of fan ownership, secured at the High Court three days earlier. 13/14: Dagenham 1 Pompey 4 – my only away game of that season and a third straight win that staved off fears of a drop into the Conference. 14/15: Morecambe away… a wonderful day featuring Eric Morecambe poses, pies with gravy and Conor Chaplin’s first Blues goal, spoiled only by the match, which we lost 3-1.
So given that there could be just one more programme to come – and I already have plans for that – I bring you 18 seasons in one column (the song title that Crowded House rejected). My 2002/03 title-winning campaign pick is a 3-2 win over Walsall. It was a day after my mum’s funeral, when going to football felt like an escape like never before. It looked like we were going to drop two points, then Matt Taylor smashed in a winner. Just for a moment, I was able to forget everything else. Now I must turn to list format… 03/04: That balmy night when we beat Bolton 4-0 and Teddy Sheringham’s hat-trick put us top of the Premier League. 04/05: Avoiding the obvious 4-1 win, I’ll go for the 1-0 victory at Bolton three days after Harry Redknapp had walked out, the points secured by a goal by the great Arjan de Zeeuw. 05/06: Okay, this IS an obvious one. Mendeeeesssss! I was in the press box for that history-turning 2-1 win over Manchester City and my head nearly exploded. It occurred to me the other day that had that goal not been scored, we probably wouldn’t have won the FA Cup or had a year in Europe. 06/07: 1-0 at home to Wigan in September, the last game I went to with my sister. 07/08: portsmouthfc.co.uk
05/06: OKAY, THIS IS AN OBVIOUS ONE. MENDEEEESSSSS!
15/16: The FA Cup replay win over Ipswich, a bigger result at the time than it sounds now. 16/17: Another obvious one. Cheltenham, 6-1. Top for 20 minutes. Champions. Can still remember that incredible buzz now. 17/18: Beating Paul Cook’s Wigan 2-1 at Fratton and thinking we might still sneak promotion.
Avoiding FA Cup heroics, I can’t ignore the 7-4 v Reading – still too crazy a game to believe we actually watched. 08/09: 2-0 v Vitoria Guimaraes, our first night in Europe and a ‘you had to pinch yourself’ occasion. And yes, I know there was a more remarkable Fratton night to come.
18/19: Sunderland at home just before Christmas, when the front four of Pitman, Curtis, Lowe and Evans looked like they could take us wherever we wanted to go. 19/20: Another huge home pre-Christmas win, this one 1-0 v Ipswich courtesy of a Ronan Curtis rocket. 20/21: Fleetwood at home, 0-0. For no other reason than it’s been the only game I've been to.
09/10: The FA Cup quarter-final win v Brum when Wembley came back into view. 10/11: The floodlights went out, but came
