GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU ALL AS WE PREPARE FOR OUR SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AGAINST PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

e’re looking to get back to W winning ways here at Fratton Park after successive defeats to Hull

and Lincoln in our past two home fixtures. It was always going to be tough against the latter, as we had to play most of the contest with just 10 men following the dismissal of Jack Whatmough. We felt the decision was harsh, but unfortunately our appeal was rejected. I was proud of the effort produced by my team and we were unlucky not to get a goal or a decision in their box, with our players adamant that we should have won a penalty. It was frustrating to then head up to Charlton last Saturday and have the game called off because of a waterlogged pitch. With the rain still falling, the referee’s opinion was that the surface wasn’t playable and wouldn’t improve. Thankfully, we had the chance to return to The Valley on Tuesday evening and produce an

portsmouthfc.co.uk

impressive performance to collect all three points. We made some changes to the team and all the guys who came in did a really good job. With the number of matches coming up in the next 13 weeks, we’re going to need the whole squad firing and fresh energy from our substitutes. I thought it was a really spirited display and we scored some excellent goals against a quality side who are also trying to secure one of those three spots in the Championship for next season. It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have a date for the postponed EFL Trophy final against Salford. We’ll look forward to going to Wembley on March 13, but it’s a shame that we won’t be backed by more than 50,000 Pompey fans as initially expected. Hopefully we can lift the silverware again, although securing promotion is our number one priority. 03

I THOUGHT IT WAS A REALLY SPIRITED DISPLAY AND WE SCORED SOME EXCELLENT GOALS AGAINST A QUALITY SIDE We’ll be looking to keep applying pressure on the top two by collecting three points against a tough Plymouth side. They’ve been playing really well in recent weeks, though, and we’ll have to be at our best to achieve the desired outcome. A warm welcome to Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher, as well as their staff and players. We wish them a safe journey home after the game. Play up Pompey! Kenny

OUR LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE TAKING PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SEES PLYMOUTH ARGYLE VISITING FRATTON PARK THIS AFTERNOON was great for us to get back to Iandtwinning ways on Tuesday evening I felt it was a thoroughly deserved victory. We had to get over the frustration of the game being postponed so close to kickoff on Saturday, but returned to produce a fine performance against a Charlton side we’ve struggled against in recent years. This is a crucial stage of the season as although we’ve still got 22 games remaining, there are only 13 weeks to fit them all in. That’s a very short time period and it’s one that could define the future

of many of our players. As you know, we continue to fight against the salary cap regulations in their current form, but Kenny summed it up perfectly recently when he said there’s an easy way for us to not have to deal with that – get into the Championship! A decision has finally been taken for our postponed EFL Trophy final against Salford to take place at Wembley next month. It’s disappointing that will happen with no fans present – especially as we had sold more than 50,000 tickets – but commercial reasons meant there was no way around it. We have to respect the wishes of the EFL, who are trying to bring in what little revenue they can during these difficult times for everyone. It’s a game we want to win and we’ll try our best to lift the silverware once more, but the absolute priority for us is promotion. Let’s hope we can build on Tuesday’s display this

DATE SET FOR WEMBLEY RETURN A date has been confirmed for the postponed 2020 Papa John’s Trophy final between Pompey and Salford.

“It obviously won’t be the same without the fantastic Pompey supporters there to cheer us on, but we’ll do everything we can to win the game for them.”

The sides will head to Wembley Stadium on Saturday, March 13 (3pm kick-off) and the behindclosed-doors contest will be screened live on Sky Sports.

The match was originally due to take place in March 2020, but was postponed due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Pompey’s League One match at Peterborough has now It is a part of a ‘Wembley been moved to Tuesday, Weekender’ in the Papa March 16. Meanwhile, the John’s Trophy, with the 2021 visit to Accrington has been final taking place at the same switched to Tuesday, April time the following day. 27. Both games will kick-off at 7pm. Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “For players, management, staff and supporters, going to Wembley Stadium is always a special occasion and we’re pleased to now have a date for the 2020 final.

afternoon, as every match is now the proverbial ‘cup final’. Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe is someone I know very well. I had the pleasure of working with him and his assistant Steven Schumacher when they were players and always knew they would go on to achieve managerial success. They did a great job to get the side into League One last season and I’m sure this is the start of a very fruitful career for them both – although hopefully they won’t be celebrating at 5pm this evening. I’d like to offer them a warm welcome, as well as their staff and players, and the visiting Argyle directors. Stay safe and, as always, PUP! Mark Catlin Chief Executive

NOTICEBOARD ROBERT ‘BOB’ THOMPSON (1937-2021)

The great Fratton End in the sky will have a new member, as Robert (Bob) Thompson sadly passed away peacefully last month. Originally from Yorkshire he grew up watching Huddersfield under Bill Shankly and saw Denis Law make his debut. He moved to Hampshire in the 1970s and began following Pompey in the 1977/78 season. He soon caught the bug and had fond memories of a packed Fratton in our promotion season under Frank Burrows. Along with son Bill, he became a season ticket holder in the newly built Fratton End in 1998 and went to every home game until the end of last season. Yes, he was at that Stockport match! He enjoyed all the trips to Wembley in recent years and reminisced about the great teams he watched, including his favourite players Paul Walsh, Paul Merson and Robert Prosinecki. I’m sure he’s still cheering us on and will currently have the best seat in the house.

POMPEY v PLYMOUTH

ompey continued their P excellent away form this season by dismantling fellow

promotion hopefuls Charlton at The Valley earlier in the week. They have won eight of their 11 League One games on the road, with Blackpool the only side to send Kenny Jackett’s men home empty-handed. But now the challenge is to transfer that record to Fratton Park, where the Blues have not been quite so fluent. The 13 contests played on home soil so far have resulted in five wins, but also the same number of defeats – most recently against high-flying Hull and Lincoln. So Pompey will be aiming to tip the scales in their favour when Plymouth make the trip along the south coast for this afternoon’s fixture. The visitors have been steadily climbing the third tier table in recent weeks and arrive sitting in 14th position – 10 points behind their hosts having played one match more.

portsmouthfc.co.uk

Argyle have yet to be beaten in the league in 2021, with their most recent reverse arriving against Oxford after Christmas.

Blues to memorably gain revenge by dramatically snatching the title on the final day of the following season.

There was also a run to the fourth round of the FA Cup, which saw Championship side Huddersfield overcome before the adventure ended with a narrow defeat to top-flight strugglers Sheffield United.

There was also a fractious relationship between managers Paul Cook and Derek Adams, although both have since moved on.

But most of their victories this term have come at Home Park and the Pilgrims had not claimed a maximum haul outside of Devon until their triumphs at Sunderland (2-1) and Swindon (2-0) last month. Despite what some people might say, today’s game is certainly not a derby, although there was undoubtedly an added spice to recent meetings. That was largely down to the fact that Pompey and Plymouth were both locked in a battle to secure promotion from League Two. The latter side came out on top in the play-offs at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, only for the

08

Jackett enjoys a much friendlier rapport with current counterpart Ryan Lowe, who guided Argyle immediately back out of the fourth tier last term. They were in third place when Covid-19 saw the action grind to a halt in March and remained there once the points-per-game method was implemented to claim the final automatic promotion slot. Pompey are unbeaten in their past seven clashes with the Pilgrims, with five of them ending all square – including a 2-2 televised stalemate at Devon in November. But the Blues will be searching for all three points today, as they aim to keep applying pressure on the top two.

He moved on to appear for Chester, Crewe, Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons, Tranmere and Bury, hanging up his boots after a third spell with the latter. Lowe was already coaching the Shakers at the time and after a couple of stints as caretaker manager, was handed the role on a permanent basis in May 2018. In his first season at the helm, he guided Bury to automatic promotion from League Two and the semi-finals of the EFL Trophy – where they were beaten by eventual winners Pompey.

League One November 16 2020 Pompey were denied the chance to move up to third in the League One standings after being held to a televised draw at Plymouth. They were poor in the first half and fell behind when Sean Raggett tried to stop Ryan Hardie from converting Frank Nouble’s pass and could only turn the ball into his own net. But the performance was much better after the break and John Marquis levelled from the spot following a handball by Kell Watts. HOMEGROWN HEROES FOOTBALL HISTORIAN LEIGH EDWARDS PROFILES FIVE PLAYERS WHO PROGRESSED THROUGH THE PLYMOUTH RANKS JOHNNY WILLIAMS

Long-serving favourite Williams was an influential figure in Argyle’s 1958/59 Division Three title triumph. Turning professional at Home Park in October 1952, he was ever-present in three successive seasons and scored against Leicester in the first leg of the 1964/65 League Cup semifinals. A strong tackler, although an attacking player by instinct, he struck 55 goals in 447 games prior to joining Bristol Rovers in December 1966. Returning to the Pilgrims as reserve team coach for a year in June 1969, Williams then managed Bodmin and Falmouth. He ran three garages in the Plymouth area and died locally in November 2011. NORMAN PIPER England U23 midfielder Piper was ever-present for Plymouth during the 1968/69 campaign. Signing professional terms in February 1965, he appeared in that season’s League Cup semi-final and missed just one match in 1967/68. He portsmouthfc.co.uk

scored 37 goals in 233 outings before being sold to Pompey for £40,000 in May 1970. Featuring in every game during his first two seasons at Fratton Park, Piper twice helped the Blues reach the FA Cup fifth round and joined Fort Lauderdale Strikers in March 1978, then had spells with Columbus Magic, Wichita Wings and Pittsburgh Spirit. He has since held various coaching posts in the United States and lives in California. COLIN SULLIVAN Three Lions U23 left-back Sullivan featured prominently as Argyle reached the last four of the League Cup in 1973/74. Turning professional in July 1968, he was ever-present in 1972/73 and netted seven times in 257 appearances before moving to Norwich in the summer of 1974. He starred as they regained topflight status at the first attempt and were League Cup finalists in 1974/75, joining Cardiff in February 1979. Following a spell with Hereford, Sullivan signed for Pompey in March 1982 and helped secure the Division Three title in 1982/83. He later featured for Swansea and became a landscape gardener. KEVIN HODGES Long-serving midfielder Hodges holds Plymouth’s appearance record. He penned professional terms at Home Park in March 1978 – starring as the club were FA Cup semi-finalists in 1983/84 – and was ever-present three times, including for the 1985/86 Division Three promotion success. He scored 87 goals in 620 matches prior to joining Torquay in December 1992, later 11

managing them to the fourth tier play-off final in 1993/94. Returning to Home Park as boss from June 1998 until October 2000, Hodges also took charge of Clevedon before taking up a post as director of Argyle’s academy. He is now assisting Robbie Herrera at Dorchester. PAUL WOTTON

Midfielder Wotton was the ever-present captain for Argyle’s 2001/02 Division Three title success. Born locally, he was a trainee at Home Park and made his debut in a 3-2 defeat at Shrewsbury five months before turning professional in July 1995. He also skippered the club to the third tier crown in 2003/04 and was twice leading marksman prior to joining Southampton in the summer of 2008. Featuring in their 2010 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final success, Wotton left for Yeovil at the start of 2011 and returned to Plymouth the following year. He netted 66 goals in 491 games overall for the club, then assisted Derek Adams and is now managing Truro. @Pompey

The Valley / February 2 2020 Pompey returned to winning ways in style with a deserved victory over promotion rivals Charlton at The Valley. Albie Morgan clipped the top of the bar for the hosts, but the Blues took control from that point, with John Marquis coming close to breaking the deadlock on three occasions. Instead it was Michael Jacobs who made the

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR sure that I would not Ihad’mhaveIpretty wanted to be a goalkeeper been born 30 years later

than I was. As far as I can remember – and memory is not my best feature these days – the only time I ventured from my area saw me receive a red card! Even that was accidental, as I gathered the ball inside the box during an FA Cup tie against Leicester, only for the wet conditions to send me sliding out of it. It was the early days of the back-pass rule, which saw the men between the sticks having to use their feet after previously being allowed to pick the ball up. After 25 years of doing the latter, I never really got my head around the change. Thankfully, nor had opposition strikers back then. It would have ended in tears if a defender had sent the ball in my direction while a nearby striker

burst forward to close me down. But do not get fooled into thinking that the game has changed that much, simply because of all the modern jargon that is parroted these days. The one about the keeper being a sweeper was as true when I was playing as it is now. Okay, it might not have been as frequent or deliberate, but I was always alert to long balls that were punted up the pitch and likely to bypass the defence. We also hear about these modern day full-backs who play more like wingers, but I wonder if these commentators had ever seen John Beresford in action for us. He was probably the best attacking left-sided player I ever appeared alongside for the club. John signed for us a year before Enda Stevens – another fine

footballer in that position – was even born. I am never quite sure what pundits mean when they talk about a player having a ‘low centre of gravity’. I think, in my day, you would probably just describe them as being skilful. I certainly had colleagues who would spend the whole game on their feet and were adept in possession of the ball. As for the defence playing a ‘high line’ – that was just attempting to catch the opposition offside. Meanwhile, a ‘high press’ was commonly known as ‘closing them down’. The game has certainly evolved since I hung up my boots, but don’t be taken in by some people’s assessment that the pioneers of this progression are always the new kids on the block.

1967 Albert McCann’s brace and a goal from Dennis Edwards (above) saw the Blues win 3-1 at Hull in an FA Cup third round second replay to set up a clash with Tottenham.

1988 Vince Hilaire and Mick Quinn (above) were on target, as Derby were defeated 2-1 in a top-flight encounter to stretch the Blues’ unbeaten run to eight games.

MOORE’S MEMORIES MUCH LIKE THE LAGER I WAS DRINKING, IT HAD HARDLY BEEN VINTAGE STUFF DOWN IN DEVON t might make a question for Idoubt a future pub quiz, although I it. Which three players –

one who currently appears in the Premier League, one in League One and one in League Two – was I once sat with in a Wetherspoons, along with a manager who is out of work at the time of writing, but being talked up as a prospect for a Championship club. I will not, as is tradition, point you to the bottom of the page to reveal the answer, given the uncertainty over who actually makes it that far down this column or whether anyone really cares. For those who do, my company included Enda Stevens, Gary Roberts, Kyle Bennett and Paul Cook on a Sunday lunchtime in August that followed a 1-0 win at Exeter the previous day. Roberts had converted an 85thminute penalty to ensure that Pompey sat eighth in League Two after five matches, four points behind leaders Morecambe. Much like the lager I was drinking, it had hardly been vintage stuff down in Devon and the result came during a stuttering start to the 2016/17 campaign. Nevertheless, all four were mildly bemused by the amount of negativity that all things Pompey were attracting on social media, be it the competence of the manager or players, as well as the unconvincing nature of the latest win. I should stress that this downcast mood did not extend to inside the pub itself, where punters were queuing up a for a chat or to request autographs.

portsmouthfc.co.uk

The value of players living inside the community of the club that pays their wages was in evidence right there. It would be easy to assume the poison that drips into the cesspool of the perpetually angry and attention seeking wing of the Twitter community is how everyone feels. But instead, these Pompey folk were able to experience a dose of reality. Fellow columnist Steve Bone has previously asked fans for their sightings of players in unusual places. I recall that answers ranged from shopping in the deli section at Tesco to filling up at a Shell petrol station. One supposes that there were far fewer occurrences during the Premier League days. It’s highly improbable that your average Blues fan was relaxing in the sauna at Champneys at the same time as Sol Campbell or bumped into Niko Kranjcar during an amble through the New Forest. I forgave the clearly unimpressed Stevens when he compared Havant with the most downtrodden parts of his native Dublin.

19

These players were part of a team that was just over eight months away from giving supporters a selection of marvellous memories that stretched from Meadow Lane to Fratton Park and Southsea Common. Here they were, sat among normal people, doing what normal people do. Well, almost. The sight of Cook strolling back and forth across the lengthy pub lounge on the phone to Mick McCarthy – who was keen to take Bennett to Ipswich – was hardly the pursuit of your typical Parchment Makers punter. But it reminded me of the times when Norman Piper was spotted in The Black Dog, Alan Biley in The Star or Kevin O’Callaghan and Mick Tait in the Kenwood Club. These were popular players visiting hostelries that have since gone to that great brewery in the sky. Like their more contemporary counterparts, they all appreciated the Pompey ethos – perhaps because they embraced the local community, rather than sitting poolside at a luxury spa.

THEY WERE THE PROPERTY OF HIS GREAT-UNCLE WHO, IT TURNS OUT, IS STILL THE LONGEST-SERVING DIRECTOR OF THE CLUB… Sounds intriguing. What are they and what are they for? They are a couple of suede leather and embossed folders celebrating the 50th anniversary banquet of The Football League held at the Dorchester Hotel, London on May 30 in 1938, and the 75th anniversary banquet of The Football Association at the King’s Hall, Holborn Restaurant, London, on October 26 of the same year. WC Kiln, Roger’s greatuncle, was there as the club’s representative. Each contains the order of ceremonies, menu, toast list and entertainment, plus a list of attendees and a set of autographs secured from other club representatives on the night. Nice pieces. So who was WC Kiln? William Clarke Kiln, the son of a Fareham businessman, was born in 1886 and excelled at a number of sports. After a spell in Australia, he became managing director of the family business, The Portsmouth Brickworks Limited, based in Burrfields Road, Copnor. Fareham, eh? I wonder if Kiln Road there is any connection? Good question. Quite possibly is the answer, but we’re concerned about football here. It appears Kiln responded to the club in its hour of need in 1912 and became a significant investor in the reconstituted Portsmouth Football Company Limited, securing a seat on the board. He served until his death on January 25 in 1952, a period of 40 years unsurpassed

by any other director in the club’s history. He became vice-chairman in 1934 and chairman in 1937, before stepping down in 1940, which coincided with his retirement from business the previous year. The photo is of the board in 1948. Kiln is on the bottom row, second from the right. A bit of an unsung hero then? He truly saw it all. For sure. William Kiln is probably less remembered now than he rightly deserves. He encapsulates the key moments of the club’s rise from the Southern League to the pinnacle of English football, with an FA Cup win in 1939 and two successive league titles. Off the field, Fratton Park was developed into a 50,000-capacity stadium with new South (1925) and North (1934) stands, along with

other improvements in spectator comfort, all no doubt benefitting from his building knowledge and expertise. There is no doubt this self-made and shrewd businessman played more than a full part in the club’s rich history and this can now be recognised. Thanks to Richard Wilson from the Pompey History Society for his help in compiling this article

COMMUNITY COACHING CONTINUES IN SCHOOLS

ompey in the Community (PitC) coaches have P been keeping busy during the latest lockdown by visiting primary schools around the local area to support teaching staff by providing PE and sport lessons for the children of key workers.

They are currently attending Mayfield School, Meon Junior School and Northern Junior School, engaging with pupils from Year R to Year 6, delivering a range of both physical sports and sport-based classroom activities. Teachers at all of the schools have said the children are loving the sessions being organised by the PitC coaches. The youngsters are spending all morning in their seats, so the opportunity to get active is a welcome release. Remaining physically active greatly benefits their mental health, while playing organised games with the coaches means they are being cared for in the best possible way. Dan Williamson, PitC’s assistant head of curriculum and delivery, said: “The small number of children still attending schools have loved taking part in sporting sessions with our coaches. “It’s also brilliant that we can allow the teachers to have a short break, as they have been working tirelessly to ensure their pupils – those in school and at home – don’t miss out on any of their vital education. “A huge ‘well done’ to all of our staff for having such a positive impact within the city during these strange times.” Pompey in the Community would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all the schools who have continued to show us commitment and support throughout these unprecedented times. If any schools would like to find out more about how we can provide support, then please email dan.williamson@pompeyitc.org.uk

STEVE BONE’S

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND oday my quest to name 40 T games from 40 seasons continues. Not just any 40 old

games, but ones that have been memorable for me from each campaign I've been watching the Blues. Incidentally, we are on course for a 0-0 draw with Fleetwood having to be the pick from this, my 40th season, given that it could well end up being the only game I get to before the summer of 2021 arrives. At least it might guarantee that Barton fella a passing mention in my memoirs that he could otherwise only have dreamed of. In previous columns, I've covered eight seasons from the 1980s and the missing campaign from that decade is the one that started in August 1988, after our prompt and unseemly demotion back to the second division. Many will recall that 88/89 started brilliantly and went downhill faster than Franz Klammer (look it up, kids). So my pick from that term is a 4-0 thumping of Leeds at a sunny Fratton Park on the first Saturday of September. As an own-goal and strikes by Mick Quinn, Terry Connor and Mark Chambrlain saw off a side containing ex-Blues Noel Blake, Vince Hilaire and Ian Baird, we thought we were heading straight back up – then didn’t win again for weeks on end. The season ended with an uninspiring John Gregoryled team losing six in a row. On to the 1990s and my most vivid memory of the 90/91 campaign will be a 30-year-old memory in just 10 days’ time – for on February 16, it finished Pompey 1 Paul Gascoigne 2 in the FA Cup. Okay, it was actually Pompey 1 portsmouthfc.co.uk

IF EVER A PLAYER HAS BEATEN THE BLUES SINGLEHANDEDLY ON THEIR HOME TURF, THIS WAS WHEN IT HAPPENED Spurs 2, but if ever a player has beaten the Blues single-handedly on their home turf, this was when it happened. Gazza simply took the game by the scruff of the neck with the Londoners trailing to a Mark Chamberlain goal and we had no answer as he scored twice. My 1991/92 memory has to be from the FA Cup, but as I am trying to avoid the really obvious games, it’s not the semi-final at Highbury, but the quarter-final win over Nottingham Forest. I was down the front of a jammed North Terrace on that tense, but joyous, afternoon – and when, four years later, the terraces had seats installed on them, we all knew there could never be another day like that. Somewhere I have a photo of me and my NT chums taken shortly after the final whistle by my sister, who by then was on the pitch, and 26

it is among the most treasured pictures I own. A snapshot of one of life’s best times. One more for now and there are many classic games from 92/93 I could pick out. But narrowly beating the Boxing Day thrashing of Bristol Rovers, from which Guy Whittingham’s third goal remains one of my favourites of all-time, is a November tonking of Tranmere, also at Fratton Park. The first half demolition of Rovers is, to this day, one of the best 45-minute displays I’ve ever seen Pompey produce. It was scintillating, spine-tingling. Alan McLoughlin, the Corporal and Paul Walsh were the scorers and, in truth, also the main Tranmere tormentors, backed up by the likes of Chambo, Warren Neill and Ray Daniel, the latter getting the only goal of the by-comparison-anticlimactic second half. I’ll run through more of my ‘40 from 40’ in future columns… in the meantime, let me know if you recall the same games or others from the same seasons as fondly as I do.
