OUR LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE TAKING PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SEES ROCHDALE VISITING FRATTON PARK THIS AFTERNOON

was another very impressive Ilasttperformance at Shrewsbury Saturday. In fact, at times

during the first half, it was as good as anything I’ve seen during my time at the club. However, it’s disappointing that we’re now going to be without John Marquis for three games. From where I was sat – opposite to where the camera was located – he clearly won the ball. It wasn’t even a foul in my opinion, so I struggle to get my head around why the red card was upheld. Rules are rules, though, and so we have to respect the decision. There are 10 games remaining now, so we are most definitely in the business end of the season. Our run-in appears advantageous on paper, but – as I’m sure we’ll

find out against Rochdale today – teams fighting for their lives are often the most dangerous opponents. It’s very early days, but it’s been great to see how quickly Danny and Nicky have ingrained themselves in the Pompey community. People often talk about ‘getting the club’ and that does already seem to be the case. I’ve personally been impressed by their enthusiasm, vibrancy, knowledge and desire to go above and beyond their roles. Long may that continue. Seeing the Covid rates continue to fall is heartening, as more and more people receive their vaccination. I recently had my first jab and it was quick and easy, without any sideeffects. I would advise everyone to take up the offer when it’s their turn. That can only help when the talks continue about fans returning to grounds, hopefully in the relatively near future. Finally, a warm welcome to everyone from Rochdale who has

IT’S VERY EARLY DAYS, BUT IT’S BEEN GREAT TO SEE HOW QUICKLY DANNY AND NICKY HAVE INGRAINED THEMSELVES IN THE POMPEY COMMUNITY made the long trip down to the south coast. I know their manager Brian Barry-Murphy well from his time as a player at Bury. He’s a great bloke and it’s no surprise to see how highly regarded he is at Spotland. A very Happy Easter to you all. Stay safe and, as always, PUP! Mark Catlin Chief Executive

HEAD COACH

DANNY COWLEY GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU ALL AS WE GET READY TO FACE ROCHDALE IN THE LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AT FRATTON PARK t is an absolute privilege for Iwonderful Nicky and me to be at this football club. We totally understand how important it is to you all and I can promise that we will be working every single minute of every single day to create something that we can all be proud of. We have now been here for 14 days and what is absolutely apparent, is how many really good people there are associated with this club.

Getting to know the players and staff has been great. We have started to build a level of respect and trust which is critical in any successful relationship. The players are an incredibly good group – honest, hard-working and humble. They are really coachable and focused on wanting to be the best that they can be. This works well for Nicky and me because our main ambition every day is to help them improve – both as players and people. It has been a good start. We did well to come back and secure victory in a competitive match against Ipswich. We got stronger as the contest went on and it was pleasing to win from behind for the first time this season. This gave us an energy and momentum that we were able to take into the next training week. We were happy with our performance between 10 and 45 minutes in the Shrewsbury game. We had control, rhythm and a dominance to our play. In the second half we couldn’t find the same levels. Our opponents changed their shape and we were unable to find the tactical answers portsmouthfc.co.uk

NICKY AND I HAVE A RELENTLESS WORK ETHIC, AN ENTHUSIASM FOR THE GAME AND A REAL DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED as a new group. But since last Saturday, we have been able to go back to the training pitch and work on our patterns of play against a 4-3-3. Next time we come up against this system, we will have the solutions that we need. We were pleased with the determination and resilience that the group showed after going down to 10 men. If you want to be a successful team, you have to win football matches in all different ways. We are working towards becoming a fast, attacking team 05

– one that attacks even when we defend. Our ambition going forward must be to try to win every fixture that we play in. I wish we had a magic wand, but we don’t. However, what Nicky and I do have is a relentless work ethic, an enthusiasm for the game and a real determination to succeed. Our only disappointment is that we haven’t been able to meet you all in person. We do, though, feel your positivity and your unconditional support for Pompey. This football club can be whatever it wants to be. Only we control our destiny – nobody else gets that privilege. Let’s dream big and create something that we can all be proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Brian Barry-Murphy and his Rochdale team to Fratton Park for today’s game. Play up Pompey! Danny @Pompey

POMPEY v ROCHDALE

uccessive victories over S Ipswich and Shrewsbury have got the Pompey promotion train back on track.

Under head coach Danny Cowley – and his brother Nicky – the side have arrested their slide down the standings and climbed back into the play-off positions. But the congested nature of the League One table means that the fifth-placed Blues are only four points ahead of MK Dons in 12th spot. And with just 10 games of the campaign now remaining, the race is on to ensure a top six finish come 5pm on May 8. So clubs will be keen to take advantage of the busy Easter weekend, which sees fixtures on Good Friday and then the bank holiday Monday. The Blues make the long trip to an undoubtedly more buoyant Wigan outfit in a few days, but first up is a Fratton clash with another side portsmouthfc.co.uk

who are battling to beat the drop. Rochdale are currently propping up the rest of the division, albeit with games in hand on many of the teams sitting immediately above them in the standings. They have been waiting a while since their last taste of action in a dramatic draw with promotionchasing Peterborough at Spotland. Brian Barry-Murphy’s troops had recovered from a two-goal deficit and appeared to have snatched victory when Jimmy Keohane fired home at the death. But it was a case of two points dropped for the home side, as Jonson Clarke-Harris converted a stoppage-time penalty for Posh. Dale had time to brood on that setback, as international call-ups saw scheduled contests against AFC Wimbledon and Swindon postponed. The men from Greater Manchester hold the worst home record in the 08

division, having won a single game and collected a mere 11 points. But the Blues should be wary about their much better away form, with a maximum haul already gathered on six occasions. Rochdale have enjoyed success at Burton (1-0), Shrewsbury (2-1), Plymouth (4-0), Wigan (5-0), Bristol Rovers (2-1) and Lincoln (2-1), as well as knocking Championship side Huddersfield out of the Carabao Cup. Supporters would have hoped their heroes could improve on a finish of 18th – albeit with 10 games still remaining – last term. But with the side four points adrift of that all-important dotted line, surely just extending their sevenyear stay in League One would be deemed a success. Dale need points fast, though, and you have to go all the way back to 1979 to find the last time they claimed one of those on Pompey’s patch. @Pompey

Sheffield Wednesday and Bury, scoring the latter club’s 1,000th goal in the fourth tier of English football. Barry-Murphy signed for Rochdale in 2010 and made 77 appearances for them, last pulling on his boots for an EFL Trophy win at Hartlepool more than four years ago. He worked as a coach and was appointed caretaker manager following Keith Hill’s departure in March 2019, soon being given the job on a permanent basis.

Pompey 0 League One September 20 2020 Pompey played out a goalless draw for the second League One fixture in succession – but were left wondering how they departed Rochdale with only a point. The first half was a drab and lifeless affair, but the visitors took control after the break and had several opportunities to score. It looked like the deadlock had been broken when Gavin Bazunu claimed Lee Brown’s corner and tumbled into the net, only for the referee to decide the keeper had been fouled. And Bazunu was Dale’s hero, making fine saves to deny John Marquis and Sean Raggett, ensuring

Young centre-forward Lord topped Rochdale’s goalscoring charts in 1956/57. Turning professional at the club in October 1953, he struck 54 times in 122 league games before moving to Crewe in the summer of 1961. He was leading marksman in their 1962/63 fourth tier promotion success and joined Plymouth in November 1963. Lord starred as they reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1964/65 and left for Stockport midway through the following campaign. He had spells with Blackburn and Chesterfield before returning to Argyle in October 1967. He held many coaching posts and died in South Africa in June 2005. GEOFF THOMAS Midfielder Thomas was capped nine times by England after leaving Dale. Discovered playing for nearby Littleborough, he turned professional at Spotland in August 1982 and scored once in 12 outings prior to joining portsmouthfc.co.uk

Crewe in March 1984. He moved to Crystal Palace in June 1987, starring as they reached the topflight in 1988/89, were FA Cup finalists in 1990 and lifted the Zenith Data Systems Cup in 1991. Sold to Wolves for £800,000 in the summer of 1993, Thomas signed for Nottingham Forest four years later and helped secure the Division One title, then turned out for Barnsley, Notts County and the Railwaymen again. He is patron of the charity Cure Leukaemia. MATT GILKS Goalkeeper Gilks earned three senior Scotland caps following his Rochdale departure. Born locally, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Chesterfield four months before penning professional terms in July 2001. He helped Dale qualify for the Division Three play-offs in 2001/02 and was ever-present in two consecutive seasons, making 197 appearances. Moving to Norwich in the summer of 2007, Gilks joined Blackpool a year later and helped them win promotion to the top-flight in 2009/10. He then had spells at Burnley, Rangers, Wigan, Scunthorpe, Lincoln and Fleetwood before becoming a player/goalkeeping coach for Bolton. JOE THOMPSON Winger Thompson had three spells with Dale. Born locally, he made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat to Carlisle in May 2006, becoming a professional the following year and helping the club qualify for the League Two play-offs in two consecutive seasons, then win promotion in 2009/10. Departing for Tranmere in August 2012, he was loaned back to Rochdale before arriving at former team11

mate David Flitcroft’s Bury in the summer of 2014. Thompson moved, via Carlisle, back to Spotland two years later and netted 21 goals in 203 matches overall. After bravely battling cancer, he decided to hang up his boots in February 2019.

CALLUM CAMPS Former Northern Ireland U21 midfielder Camps helped Rochdale take Tottenham to an FA Cup fifth round replay in 2018. He graduated from the youth team and made his bow from the bench in a 2-2 home draw with Port Vale five months before turning professional in September 2013. Handed a full debut as Nottingham Forest were upset in a January 2015 FA Cup clash, Camps also helped Dale reach the fourth round in 2016/17 and missed just two matches that season. He netted 30 goals in 240 games during his time at Spotland, but left last summer to sign for Fleetwood and has already struck 11 times this term. @Pompey

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR s someone who played A under a fair few managers at Fratton Park, Kenny Jackett’s

near four-year stint was quite an achievement for any era, let alone these days. Being a football boss must rank as one of the most unstable occupations and when all is said and done, every season of his tenure saw the club challenging for promotion. I had barely been in the game for a decade when the three men who had guided us from the fourth tier to the first had all been sacked. Frank Burrows had taken Pompey out of the basement following a long period of decline, only to be rewarded by the boot following a spell of mid-table mediocrity. Bobby Campbell then oversaw one of the best sides I was ever a part of, as we cantered to the Division Three title, but was deemed surplus to

requirements under a year later. Finally, Alan Ball presided over two unsuccessful promotion pushes before getting us to the promised land at the third attempt, although when relegation followed, he too was shown the door. The bizarre nature of football management meant that both Burrows and Ball were later reappointed to a job they had been ousted from, then were dismissed again. Jim Smith was another who made an impact, as we narrowly missed out on reaching the Premier League a year after getting to the FA Cup semifinals. He was also not afraid to blood promising youngsters, turning some of them into household names. And yet the one certainty was that, one day, the ‘Bald Eagle’ would be forcibly removed from his nest. Those I have named are among

the most successful to have led Pompey – certainly in my time. You can add Harry Redknapp, who played the game astutely and got out when he saw the signs of what was coming. He was loyal only to himself and Paul Cook was the same. And why not? There was also plenty of chaff between that wheat. John Gregory and Terry Fenwick, for example, lost their jobs because they weren’t good enough and fairly unpopular. You won’t last long in any industry if that is the case. One person I felt really sorry for was Tony Barton – a former player and coach who took over as caretaker boss between Burrows and Smith, doing a good job, but being overlooked for the post. He was a lovely bloke who had previously guided Aston Villa to European Cup glory. He was sacked soon after, which just about says it all.

ON THIS DAY APRIL

02 1949 Goals from Ike Clarke, Peter Harris and Len Phillips (above) gave Pompey a comfortable lead against Liverpool, but they had to see off a fightback before eventually securing a 3-2 victory.

1988 The Blues ended a run of five successive defeats by securing a narrow top-flight win at Tottenham, with Barry Horne (above) grabbing the only goal of the contest.

2002 Ike Clarke – whose strikes helped Pompey become champions of England in successive seasons – passed away at the age of 87.

2011 Ricardo Rocha was sent off as the Blues lost 2-0 in a Championship clash at Reading – the start of an eight-match winless run to finish the campaign.

2018 Paul Cook endured a miserable return to Fratton Park, as goals from Brett Pitman and Jamal Lowe saw Kenny Jackett’s Pompey win 2-1.

DID YOU KNOW? Pompey’s heart-breaking replay defeat to Liverpool at Villa Park in 1992 was the first time an 17 @Pompey FAportsmouthfc.co.uk Cup semi-final had been decided by a penalty shoot-out.

MOORE’S MEMORIES WITNESSING MY UNEASE, THE NEWLY INSTALLED BOSS PUT HIS HAND ON MY SHOULDER AND, IN HIS SOFT TONE, TOLD ME: “IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER.” THAT STUCK WITH ME

aving written this column for H 15 years now, it probably won’t come as a surprise to hear that writer’s block can sometimes develop.

So after staring at a blank screen for a couple of days, I decided to get to work taking the social media trolls to task – not for their views, but rather a lack of etiquette towards an already under fire manager, who was approaching the end of his time at Fratton Park. As these people tend to do, they were angrily circling like a flock of screeching seagulls over a discarded bag of chips. However, my words flowed less freely than their vitriol, so I diverted my attention to the ‘half century’ brigade – those fans who, following a defeat, proclaim to have supported Pompey for 50 years and have never seen a more disgraceful display or inept set of players. It is rumoured that when the side went 23 games without a win during the 2012/13 campaign, this hardy bunch introduced an early version of lockdown, spending a solid five months sat at their keyboards.

making, but being the only club official present, I felt responsible.

certainly privy to a few training ground outbursts.

Witnessing my unease, the newly installed boss put his hand on my shoulder and, in his soft tone, told me: “It really doesn’t matter.” That stuck with me.

None of this, of course, made him immune to the tenuous tightrope that every other football manager treads and I’m sure many would concur that his time at Pompey had reached a natural end.

In the nicest sense, Kenny kept you at arm’s length, making sure you never penetrated beyond his social exterior and into the private domain. Yet, as I’m sure our local press pack will agree, he is one of the nicest managers you could wish to meet.

After considering those topics, however, I instead decided to write about something – and someone – nice. Kenny Jackett.

If you wandered into the breakfast room at the team hotel during an away trip, he would always usher you to his table. And whether it was on the morning of the EFL Trophy final or ahead of training on a pre-season trip to Ireland, he would be available to talk to you in front of the camera.

There was an incident at the training ground early in his reign which saw a mix-up over media interviews cause considerable disruption. It was not of my

Rousing ‘people went to war from this city’ speeches were not his forte, but just because you couldn’t see that passion, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t there – I was

19

Despite the negative of failing to reach the Championship, the other side of the coin tells you that Kenny oversaw promotion challenges in every season of his tenure. Alan Ball, a purveyor of passion, presided over a couple of failed bids to get into the top-flight and is rightly regarded as a club legend. During his career, Kenny Jackett has already achieved far more than the meanest social media troll or harshest half-century critic can even dream of. The big difference is that he has maintained a dignified silence while awaiting the next prestigious appointment, while they raucously await their next victim. @Pompey

FROM THE ARCHIVE

THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE HAVE DUG OUT A LETTER SENT IN JUNE 1959 TO OTHER CLUBS ANNOUNCING SOME SAD NEWS… 1959? Weren’t we relegated that year? Surely we didn’t need to let other teams know? You are right. Pompey’s 32-year stay in the topflight came to an end in April 1959, but to contradict the late Bill Shankly, football isn’t more important than life and death, and this particular letter had the sad task of letting clubs know the funeral arrangements for director Sydney Leverett, who had just died, aged 83.

and stalwart of the PFA, the players’ union, recalls a clash with Leverett in conversation with the Mayor of Birmingham, who was arguing players created the wealth in the game. Leverett said it was the volunteers, such as himself. Guthrie’s pointing out that Leverett’s three directors’ box tickets, first class travel and hotels over 40 years amounted to £10,000 of value saw the conversation moved swiftly on...

Ah. Sad news indeed then… Yes. Dated June 26 from then club secretary Mr R(eg) Mulcock, this copy was sent to Blackpool FC, but clearly this was just one of many such letters sent out. It informed his counterpart of the death of Mr Leverett on June 23 and that the funeral service would be held at Portchester Crematorium on Monday, June 29 at 2pm.

Thanks to Paul Boynton and Chris Gibbs for their help with the compilation of this article.

Who was Syd Leverett then? As the letter indicates, he was a bit of a Pompey legend in many respects, describing him as ‘…former chairman and a director of the Portsmouth FC for 47 years.' Crumbs! That’s nearly half a century! Quite. When Portsmouth FC was reconstituted in 1912, he joined the board of directors. At the time Pompey were a Southern League club and a subsequent obituary in the first programme of the following season also indicated he had been involved at the club since its inception in 1898. It also added the club’s hostel for young players – run by groundsman and former championship hero Duggie Reid and his wife – would be renamed ‘Leverett House’. Do we know anything more about him? Not really, to be honest, for someone who was so central to the club. The same obituary described him as ‘the soul’ of the club and a ‘self-effacing’ man. He was a deep-sea diver by profession and did ‘noble service’ to the country in World War One as part of the diving and salvage staff at the Admiralty. There was one person who wasn’t so keen, though… Pray tell… Jimmy Guthrie, our 1939 FA Cup winning captain

ACADEMY Oxford. There was a good shape about us – we looked compact – and the lads impressed both in and out of possession. We pressed our opponents well and caused them plenty of trouble with our counterattacks. The result was thoroughly deserved.

Harry Jewitt-White

P

ompey made a fine start to their Merit League campaign by securing impressive back-toback victories over Oxford and Bournemouth. They enjoyed a 4-0 success over the former at Furze Lane, with Seok Jae Lee, Harry Jewitt-White, Kristian Dawson and Dan Gifford all on target. That was followed by a 3-1 win in Dorset, where Alfie Bridgman, Harrison Brook and Harvey Rew were the scorers.

“From a coaching perspective, it was great to see the lads working hard for each other and you could hear them helping their team-mates with good information. We allowed them to work out any problems that arose during the game and take a bit more responsibility.

“We also played some impressive stuff at Bournemouth – particularly going forward. The goals came from things we’d been working on during training and that was particularly pleasing. They are always a dangerous team to play against, but I thought that we thoroughly deserved the YAC: Youth Alliance Cup result.”

Visit cutt.ly/Academy2021Stats Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “It was a really to view the latest Merit League table encouraging performance against and academy team stats.

STEVE BONE’S

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND nyone who claims this A column is ‘so last century’ has been right recently. I’ve been

the only time I have seen a new Pompey manager score – the day Steve Claridge got the winner at home to Sheffield Wednesday in his first game as player/boss. Of course, this being Stevie, the goal was at the Fratton End. And it set him and his team off on a run of three straight victories to open his reign. What a shame he was not given longer to make a success of the job. Thomas Thøgersen, incidentally, got the other goal that afternoon.

running through the 1980s and 90s in my attempt to mark my 40th season as a Pompey fan by picking one game from each campaign that still holds vivid memories for me now.

But today, I arrive at the turn of the millennium with selections from the first three seasons which were overseen by Milan Mandaric. As I’ve said in past columns on this matter, I have tried – though not always successfully – to avoid the really obvious standout game, instead going for the ones I can still remember like they were yesterday. And given that my 97/98 and 98/99 matches were both Blues defeats, I supposed I’d better focus on some victories this time. From the 1999/2000 season, I’m going for a 3-0 home win over Barnsley that occurred on January 29. It was significant for a number of reasons. It was Pompey’s first win since the end of October, ending a wretched run which had led to Alan Ball losing his job as manager for the second time and Tony Pulis taking over. A hat-trick by Steve Claridge, on the day Gary O’Neil was introduced to the Fratton faithful as a 16-year-old, gave the side a timely lift and began a run of seven wins in 11 that would carry them away from relegation danger. Who’d have bet on such an outcome against the Tykes just when we needed it most? My selected game from the 2000/01 campaign could easily be another 3-0 Fratton success portsmouthfc.co.uk

Into Mr Mandaric’s third season, 2001/02, and this time there are a few more contenders for match of the season. Now under Graham Rix, Pompey were having their strings pulled by Robert Prosinečki and for that reason, it remains one of my favourite periods of the past four decades. I’m going to go for a 4-2 home win over Palace in mid-September as my top game from that campaign. It was a fourth triumph in five games – five games in POMPEY WERE which we’d scored a total of 14 HAVING THEIR goals – and Prosi himself was the architect, scoring one and running STRINGS PULLED the show, as he did every week, BY ROBERT while Alessandro Zamperini, Peter PROSINEČKI AND Crouch and Mark Burchill also FOR THAT REASON, netted. The fact it was against one of the teams I’ve always IT REMAINS ONE as the old enemy made OF MY FAVOURITE regarded it even better. I wonder how close PERIODS OF we might have gone to promotion that season had Burchill not got THE PAST FOUR injured. DECADES against Barnsley, for those opponents and that scoreline were seen on the final day of the season, when we got the result we needed to stay up. But no, too obvious. So instead, I am going to pick out 26

There will be more seasons’ standout matches in another column – email me at stevebonepfc@googlemail.com or tweet @stevebone1 with your favourite games from the campaigns mentioned. @Pompey
