GOOD EVENING TO YOU ALL AS WE PREPARE FOR OUR SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AGAINST SWINDON TOWN

t was a pretty good performance Iweekend from us against Plymouth at the and we dominated much of the game – particularly in the first half, when we were just unable to find that crucial final pass to get us a goal. There were plenty of shots and corners, but it’s vital that you make the most of those opportunities when you are on top in a game.

We have to give credit to our opponents, though, because they defended resolutely and made it incredibly hard for us to find a way through. They were then able to really hurt us on the counter-attack, with Luke Jephcott showing just why he’s the top scorer in our division with a couple of poacher’s finishes. I was pleased with the character shown by my players, who refused to give up from that point. We kept portsmouthfc.co.uk

battling away and Ronan Curtis led the fightback – his physicality was a big asset and he gave us a real spark after coming off the bench. We were able to find a couple of quick goals to get back on level terms and might have even gone on to grab a winner if the game had continued on for a few more minutes. But we set the bar high here and wins are what we’re really looking for – you need a high number of victories if you want to finish inside the top two in this league. So we’ll be looking for a more consistent display against Swindon this evening and hopefully a better result. Our visitors find themselves at the other end of the table, but we know they still possess quality in their ranks and are obviously aware of the threat Brett Pitman poses up front. We’ll certainly show them respect, but our main 03

WE’LL BE LOOKING FOR A MORE CONSISTENT DISPLAY AGAINST SWINDON THIS EVENING AND HOPEFULLY A BETTER RESULT focus is, as always, getting our own game right. I would like to offer a warm welcome to John Sheridan and Tommy Wright, as well as their staff and players. We wish them a safe journey home after the game. Play up Pompey! Kenny @Pompey

got mixed feelings about Ithe’ve Saturday’s result – we went into game looking for three points,

but in the end, gaining just one felt almost like a win. I was pleased with the character of the team and can’t think of many times when we’ve come back from two goals down to get any kind of result, especially so late in the game. But as Kenny subsequently pointed out, we need as many victories as possible over the next three months in order to gain automatic promotion. Prior to Plymouth scoring, I thought the action was quite entertaining and there were long periods when we were camped in their area. However,

through some resolute defending or not being able to hit the target, we couldn’t force an opener. It has been a topsy-turvy campaign and generally – not just for Pompey – there seems to be more of an advantage to being on the road than playing at home. Also, and I’m loath to criticise officials, but it feels like decisions have consistently gone against us in recent weeks. There are key moments in each match that haven’t gone in our favour. While the amount of people who have tragically passed away as a result of Covid-19 is extremely upsetting, the number being vaccinated every single day means the balance is slowly being tipped in favour of finding a way out of this crisis. While I still don’t hold out much hope of seeing fans back inside Fratton Park before the end of this season, hopefully that can change by the start of the next one. I would like to welcome Brett

POMPEY v SWINDON

hen Pompey were W supposed to host Swindon on Boxing Day, they sat proudly at the League One summit after knocking Hull off their perch just before Christmas.

Then several members of the squad tested positive for Covid-19, ensuring the next two fixtures were cancelled – with a trip to Accrington also falling victim because of the weather – and any momentum relinquished. The first of those has been squeezed into an already hectic schedule and takes place on the freezing south coast this evening. A delayed start to the campaign – and those pesky postponements – means Kenny Jackett’s troops have only just passed the halfway mark and still have 21 games to squeeze in. That number does not even include last term’s EFL Trophy final, with a trip to Wembley to face Salford now being scheduled for mid-March. However, the Blues remain in a positive position and although they have since fallen to fifth spot, are just three points behind Hull in second. portsmouthfc.co.uk

Their opponents are not in quite such rude health and currently sit inside the division’s drop zone after 27 matches. Swindon were beaten 1-0 on home soil by a resurgent Shrewsbury at the weekend, with a wonder strike from Harrison Chapman separating the sides. It means that John Sheridan’s men have won just two of their past 13 matches – a sequence that includes nine defeats. One of those successes came against Wigan seven days ago, with Brett Pitman – a man the Fratton faithful know pretty well – scoring the only goal to secure three valuable points. The Robins were placed second in the fourth tier standings when last season was halted and behind Crewe on goal difference. But the fact they had a game in hand on the Railwaymen proved crucial when places were determined by a calculator, ensuring the silverware would be heading for Wiltshire. Richie Wellens was the man in charge at the time, but departed in November to take over at 08

Salford and was replaced in the dug-out by Sheridan. One of his priorities will be to improve Swindon’s record on the road, with their two away league victories coming at Ipswich (3-2) and fierce rivals Oxford (2-1). Having fallen at the first hurdle in all three cup competitions – including a defeat to National League North outfit Darlington in the FA Cup – they can at least focus fully on trying to pull clear of the relegation places. Some Pompey fans will still be having nightmares about the last meeting between the teams, with their financially-stricken side thrashed 5-0 on New Year’s Day in 2013. And the Reds also came out on top at Fratton Park during that forgettable League One season – in fact you have to go back to 2000 to find the last Blues triumph. But with the hosts needing to boost their form on the south coast, those supporters watching from the warmth of their homes tonight will be hoping for some midweek magic. @Pompey

He began his playing career at Manchester City and later featured prominently for both Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday, hitting the Wembley winner for the latter in the 1991 League Cup final. Sheridan hung up his boots following a spell with Oldham, who also provided the chance for him to start life as a manager. He went on to take charge of Chesterfield (twice), Plymouth, Newport, Notts County, Fleetwood and Carlisle, as well as having a couple more stints at Boundary Park.

MANAGER John Sheridan

The former Republic of Ireland international represented his country at two World Cups and scored their landmark 100th goal in a 1994 victory over Bolivia.

Sheridan was appointed boss of Irish side Waterford during the summer, but left a few months later to take up the vacant position at Wigan and lasted just 15 games there before moving to Swindon. Age: 56 Town games managed/won: 18/4

James Collins struck four times to help Swindon thrash Pompey and heap more misery on the struggling visitors at the County Ground. But all the goals came in the final 30 minutes of the New Year’s Day contest, as the Blues completely capitulated. The first arrived from a corner by Fratton youth product Matt Ritchie, while Danny Hollands – who would go on to have a spell on the south coast – was also on target. HOMEGROWN HEROES FOOTBALL HISTORIAN LEIGH EDWARDS PROFILES FIVE PLAYERS WHO PROGRESSED THROUGH THE SWINDON RANKS SAM BURTON

Long-serving goalkeeper Burton was ever-present for Swindon in 1954/55 and 1957/58. Born locally, he turned professional at the County Ground in the summer of 1945 and made his debut in a 2-2 draw with Reading in November 1946. He contested a first team slot with Frank Boulton and Norman Uprichard during the early post-war era. Helping the Robins reach the fourth round of the FA Cup in 1955/56, Burton missed just one match in 1960/61 and played 463 league games until a shoulder injury ended his career in November 1961. He later ran a transport cafe in Lyneham, then retired to Gwent where he had met his wife. MIKE SUMMERBEE Brilliant winger Summerbee was capped eight times by England after leaving the Robins. Signing professional terms in March 1960, he starred in the 1962/63 Division Three promotion triumph and was both leading marksman and ‘Player of the Year’ in 1964/65. portsmouthfc.co.uk

He netted 39 goals in 218 league matches prior to joining Manchester City in the summer of 1965, amassing a vast collection of domestic and European honours under the Joe Mercer/Malcolm Allison partnership at Maine Road. Later with Burnley and Blackpool, and having a spell as Stockport’s player/manager, Summerbee became a successful businessman. His son Nicky also starred for Swindon. DON ROGERS England U23 winger Rogers struck twice in Swindon’s 1969 League Cup final victory. Turning professional at the County Ground in October 1962, he featured in the 1962/63 promotion campaign and was ever-present in four successive seasons. He starred in the 1968/69 Division Three and cup ‘double’, as well as the following year’s Anglo-Italian Cup adventure, reuniting with boss Bert Head at Crystal Palace in November 1972. Moving to QPR in exchange for Terry Venables in September 1974, Rogers returned to the Robins in March 1976 and netted 148 goals in 412 league outings overall for the club, then turned out for Yeovil and ran a sports shop in Swindon. JIMMY ALLAN Scottish goalkeeper Allan starred as the Robins reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1979/80. He penned professional terms at the County Ground in the summer of 1971 and made his bow in a goalless draw with QPR two months later. He contested a first team slot with Peter Downsborough and Jim Barron before establishing himself during the 1976/77 campaign, featuring 11

in successive FA Cup runs. Making 371 league appearances, Allan’s career was curtailed by a broken arm suffered against Rochdale in October 1983. He had a testimonial match against Chelsea before settling in Devon, working for a box manufacturing firm. PAUL RIDEOUT

England U21 international striker Rideout was Swindon’s leading marksman in two consecutive seasons. He became the club’s youngest player – aged 16 years, 107 days – against Hull in November 1980 and netted 38 goals in 95 league games before leaving for Aston Villa in the summer of 1983. Moving, via Italian club Bari, to Southampton in July 1988, he returned to the Robins on loan in March 1991. Rideout had spells with Notts County and Rangers prior to joining Everton in August 1992 and struck their Wembley winner in the 1995 FA Cup final. Later appearing for several clubs in China and Tranmere, he has since held coaching posts. @Pompey

Fratton Park / February 6 2021 Pompey scored two late goals in as many minutes to battle from behind and salvage an unlikely point against Plymouth at Fratton Park. They dominated the first half and won plenty of corners, with Tom Naylor almost converting one of them, only to see his attempt cleared by Kell Watts. Marcus Harness and Ellis Harrison also had long-range strikes kept out by Argyle keeper

portsmouthfc.co.uk

Michael Cooper before the break. But it looked as though Argyle would secure victory after League One’s leading marksman Luke Jephcott bagged a brace when the action restarted. Substitute Ronan Curtis gave the Blues some hope in the closing stages, however, catching out the dithering Watts and finding the net from an acute angle. Then, just seconds later, Harness swung a fine cross into the area that was attacked by both Sean Raggett and James Bolton, with the latter claiming the final touch.

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR ll hell broke loose recently A when Rodri returned from an offside position to rob Tyrone Mings and tee-up Bernardo Silva to score Manchester City’s opener in a victory over Aston Villa. Dean Smith, manager of the latter side, was sent off for his furious reaction after the goal was allowed to stand. Not for the first time this season, there followed a deluge of views and arguments, along with a collective shaking of heads. Lo and behold, before the dust had settled, there was ‘clarification’ on the ruling that meant should something similar occur in the future, it would be ruled out. It was a U-turn that made Johan Cruyff’s famous move when hemmed in by a Swedish defender at the 1974 World Cup look positively ordinary. Sound familiar? Swap

the Premier League for our government and there are many more examples of inexplicable and incomprehensible guidance that has been arbitrarily devised and altered, with far greater consequences than the result of a football match. Back in the autumn, I did a couple of compere spots at home games, when it was deemed safe for clubs to host fans. They were allowed to watch the action from a screen inside a corporate lounge, but not actually enter the stadium. It was a decision that left most scratching their heads, given the expert advice that the virus was more contagious in confined spaces than out in the open air. It was no surprise that sanity eventually returned and this was replaced by limited crowds

being admitted for games against Peterborough and Fleetwood in December. Everything seemed to be progressing nicely and then, suddenly, Christmas was cancelled, fans were denied access again and Pompey games started getting postponed, as our area – along with many others – was placed into a tier that had not existed 24 hours earlier. Of course, the rising death count meant the latter was an inevitable and understandable measure. But as with the Premier League, the government have been confronted with the much more far-reaching error of their ways. Their ever-changing policies have more holes than football’s rule book. With regards to sport, we laugh or moan and then move on. When it comes to people’s lives, it’s another matter entirely.

1957 Johnny Gordon (above) and Sid McClellan were on target as Pompey drew 2-2 with Chelsea in a topflight contest at Fratton Park.

1974 Michael Manley was carried from the pitch with a knee injury that effectively ended his playing career in a 4-0 defeat at Notts County.

1984 Pompey made plans to lure former England international Kevin Keegan (above) to Fratton Park, with chairman John Deacon posting an official request to Newcastle.

2008 France international Lassana Diarra netted his first Premier League goal, with the January signing’s strike securing a 1-0 win at Bolton.

MOORE’S MEMORIES THEN THERE WAS EOIN HAND, WHO I GOT TO KNOW ON HIS TRIPS BACK FROM THE EMERALD ISLE YEARS LATER ack in December, I reminisced B about watching a rerun of a festive clash between Millwall and

There was the time I was sharing a flat in San Diego with Norman Piper – who was in the team at The Den that day – and incurred his displeasure after waking him up in the early hours one morning.

Pompey from the 1970s on ‘The Big Match Revisited’.

For the uninitiated, ‘The Big Match’ was a chance to catch highlights of football matches from the weekend’s fixtures back in that golden era. The main game would be from London, with a couple of other short clips from around the regional networks.

I can also remember sitting in the Pompey Pub with another member of the line-up, Billy Wilson, who was on the other side of the bar as we drank into the early hours of Sunday morning. And then there was Eoin Hand, who I got to know on his trips back from the Emerald Isle years later.

In terms of standards, it was several steps up from Southern Soccer, which focused on teams from our neck of the woods. But with their offices a stone’s throw from The Dell, the coverage appeared to be very much biased towards Southampton.

I would love to wax lyrical about the standard of football, but had social media existed back then, there would be plenty of keyboard warriors not even waiting for the final whistle before denouncing the team as the worst they had seen in 50 years of supporting the club and demanding the dismissal of Ian St John.

Not that there wasn’t an elitist angle to ‘The Big Match’. More often than not, one of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham or West Ham appeared to dominate the airtime.

As it was, those of us who followed the Blues in those far simpler days, just moved on to the next game. The players were heroes and their status has not diminished to this day.

So coverage of a Division Two relegation tussle between Millwall and Pompey was perhaps due to a lack of Christmas alternatives in the capital on this particular afternoon. A goalless draw that produced just two shots on target might go some way to explaining why the Blues would seldom feature on the programme when visiting London – and perhaps Brian Moore and his team wished they had pitched up elsewhere, like Brentford or Orient, for instance. Yet for any Pompey fan of that vintage, it was a fascinating – if portsmouthfc.co.uk

very limited – view of their team. At the time, those players were my boyhood heroes. I revered them from over the wall that separated terrace from pitch – and never the twain should meet. Looking back at the action through the eyes of a 60-plus-year-old made for somewhat surreal viewing, especially in regards to how things had turned out since. 19

I can recall the team would feature twice more as a support act for ‘The Big Match’. There was a 3-2 defeat at Luton after being two goals up and a 5-1 thrashing at Hull. As Charles Dickens observed in ‘A Tale of Two Cities’: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” And those of us who lived through it would not have had it any other way. @Pompey

FROM THE ARCHIVE

THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE LOOK AT AN ITINERARY FROM THE BLUES’ FIRST FORAY INTO FOREIGN SOIL FOR COMPETITIVE ACTION… Cup. The 200-odd Pompey supporters and 600-odd Bari fans rattled around in the stadium somewhat. The competition wasn’t a crowd-puller.

Excellent! What a night that was in Guimaraes... Aha! Not so fast. Pompey first made it into ‘Europe’ having qualified by dint of their ninthplaced finish in the old second division in 1991/92 to play in the Anglo-Italian Cup, a recently revived competition, originally played for in the early 1970s. The FA Premier League had just been formed, so it was thought some clubs in the ‘new’ Division One would appreciate a bit of spice in the fixture list by playing their counterparts in the Italian Serie B. The irony was we had to pre-qualify for the international section, so technically our first game in Europe was at Upton Park, West Ham’s ground, where we beat the then homeless Charlton 3-1. A draw at home to Millwall saw us through, where we would face Cesena and Lucchese at home, and Bari and Ascoli away in a group format. I’d forgotten about that! What’s the itinerary for? It’s for the official club

supporter trip to Bari, situated approximately on the Achilles heel of the Italian boot. Tuesday November 24 1992 was the day and it involved an epic coach and charter flight combination over a 22-hour period. Pompey had already played Cesena at Fratton Park and beaten them 2-0 a fortnight beforehand.

Was the journey worth it? If you were after sightseeing or a good result, possibly not. Pompey lost 3-0, conceding three first half goals, then it was back on the bus and off to the airport for a flight at 12.30am to be back in Portsmouth just in time to get up for work on Wednesday. Perfect for a water-cooler conversation about what I did yesterday though… Thanks to Chris Gibbs from the Pompey History Society for his help in compiling this article. Photo by Colin Farmery.

Not for the faint-hearted then. Take us through the day... Coaches picked up fans from Goldsmith Avenue and then Cosham Post Office at 8am, while the charter flight departed Gatwick at 11am, arriving just before 3pm local time ahead of an 8.30pm kick-off. Plenty of time for some sightseeing then? If only. Italian police were out in force and fan movement was restricted to just a small square in the historic town. Then it was back on the bus to the Stadio San Nicola, an iconic 60,000 capacity ground built for the 1990 World

The Pompey History Society is a charitable organisation looking to preserve and conserve the club’s archive. It welcomes donations, including of memorabilia. For more information contact history@pompeyfc.co.uk or follow @PompeyHistory on Twitter.

NCS IS BACK!

ompey in the Community are delighted to P announce that the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme is once again offering an exciting

So whatever they want to do with their lives – or whatever they want to change in the world – they can.

opportunity for all Year 11 and Year 12 students across Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. Places can be pre-registered. NCS is a two or three-week (either residential or nonresidential) experience during the summer holidays, which provides opportunities to meet new friends, try something new and have the buzz of being an adult without the responsibility of being one! Over the course of the programme, it gives teenagers a crash course in life skills that inspire them to feel independent, as well as plenty of enjoyment. NCS is made up of four different phases:

How to Pre-Register Places on our NCS programme will fill up extremely quickly, so we encourage anyone who is interested to pre-register their spot to ensure that when our places are open, they are not missing out! Simply visit www.wearencs.com and click ‘preregister’ to either apply for yourself or on behalf of a young person. We will then contact you as soon as our places are available to ensure you can secure your place, as well as providing more information on dates and locations.

Be Epic Young people will get the opportunity to take part in a variety of different team building activities, that could range from kayaking, paddle boarding and high ropes to team games and challenges. This will allow young people to meet new peers, gain skills and enjoy time with friends. Live Life This phase allows young people to take part in interactive workshops, which give them skills for their future. These could include first aid, cooking and ‘Destination Portsmouth’, all of which allow them to develop their skills in a fun environment. Do Good The last phase of the programme lets participants make a difference by taking part in planning and delivering a social action project. Here they can use their passions to make a positive impact in their local community. Go Party Young people will come away from NCS celebrating their achievements with family and friends, receiving a certificate signed by the prime minister and full to the brim of newfound skills, friends, excitement and motivation that sticks with them for life.

STEVE BONE’S

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND wrote recently about fans Idifferent watching Pompey games from parts of the ground and

asked for stories from those who had either viewed from all vantage points or perhaps from only ever one seat. It seems I was showing my age – but in a young way – because I had completely failed to recognise the notion that, not that many decades ago, it was possible to wander between the different sections of Fratton Park during a game. This idea had, I think, just about been outlawed – or had at least stopped – by the time I started frequenting the Fratton terraces in the early 1980s, but I do have some readers who must be EVEN OLDER than me who remember it well. To today's younger fans, brought up on all-ticket games, set seats and stern stewards not even allowing you to stand up for two minutes or take a plastic bottle top to your seat to stop your Diet Coke going flat by the time Pompey are 2-0 down, the idea that you could stand where you wanted or switch ends at halftime must seem crazy. To those of us who like a visit to a non-league ground, less so. So who remembers the days of Fratton freedom? Pete Blackman, for one: “Surely,” he asked, “most people of my age did at least three sides of the ground during one game? Milton End, North Terrace then Fratton End.” Hold my coat, said Greg Brown (actually he didn’t really say that, but he might as well have done). He wrote: “We used to be able to do all four sides in one portsmouthfc.co.uk

GEORGE STEVENS INTRODUCES A FIRST EVER MENTION IN VFTNS FOR HALE BOPP COMET, FOR WHICH WE SHOULD SALUTE HIM game. When I were a lad, I did it regularly. Even when the gate on the south-east corner was introduced, the gate man would let us through.” These yarns did make me wonder why you’d want to do all four sides. Both ends, to see Pompey attack, I can understand, but the two sides as well seems a bit much. Good exercise, I suppose. Anyhow, tweeter Bileys Mullet had this to say: “I watched from all four sides… and also from the side of the pitch (and on the pitch) during one particular game in the 80s.” Mullers is talking about the Sheffield United match after promotion had been won in 1987. He added: “I remember people getting on the pitch from the side when they couldn’t see an attack and then going back to the side when play came back other way. I seem to recall someone kicked the ball or tackled someone, but that may be a false memory!” 26

Trips to the Milton End’s section for visiting fans are encouraged by some. BritintheStates (@crossy68) said: “I went in the away end once just to see what it was like. Strongly recommend the experience.” George Stevens introduces a first ever mention in VFTNS for Hale Bopp comet, for which we should salute him: “I did a tour of the stands before Fratton went all-seater, thinking I wouldn’t get a chance to do Milton End again. (These days the Milton is my most regular spot as a non-ST holder.) For that match in the Milton (v Oxford, January 1997), Hale Bopp comet was in the sky and had more movement than our midfield that game. It was a quiet Milton End that night for a boring match. There were clear skies and it was freezing cold.” The last word on this for now goes to Allan Swan, who said: “I've done all four sides in one game… but was a programme seller at the time! I got 2p per programme sold, plus my train fare covered – a decent deal in 1989.” More tales of your Fratton vantage points welcome – have you only ever watched from one seat or never been in the Fratton End in 50 years?
