ALTA PETO
SUMMER TERM 2023
WELCOME FROM OUR EXECUTIVE HEAD
Welcome to our summer edition of Alta Peto, providing an insight into the many wonderful events which have taken place this term.
The boys and young men in each year group have immersed themselves wholeheartedly in their creative and academic activities, whilst also giving their all on the sports field and in the pool.
This edition includes highlights of the many and varied opportunities which the boys take part in, and their sense of energy and enthusiasm has taken them to new heights this term.
Activities Week was particularly memorable, as each year group stepped out of their comfort zones, took risks and embraced new challenges, creating lasting memories with their friends. My sincere thanks to all my colleagues who dedicate their time to providing such rich opportunities in addition to all the work they do in the classroom.
We are proud to include the full list of awards and scholarships achieved by the boys this year. Their achievements are a testament to their dedication and passion for learning.
My thanks to the School Council and Eco Committee members for their continuing contributions and suggestions to leadership as representives of pupil voice and supporting our sustainability initiatives.
Our whole community has been able to enjoy the wonderful events organised by the SHA, including the 5-a-side football competition and the Sports Dinner; we thank all the parents involved for generously giving their time for us all to take part in special occasions together.
As we bid farewell to the families who are moving on from SHS at the end of this academic year, we extend our best wishes to you all and the very best for the future. We hope you will keep in touch with news of your continued successes.
I hope you enjoy reading about the boys’ exceptionally fulfilling summer term!

4 Trips & Visits
ST LUCIA – CRICKET AND FOOTBALL SPORTS TRIP
During the Easter holidays, 37 boys and 6 staff travelled to St Lucia for a cricket and football tour.
On the first day we visited an orphanage with many boys and girls to donate clothes and toys for the little children. After learning about the charity and donating, the boys played with the little ones, teaching them how to catch and throw. It was humbling to learn about the lives of these children and we all enjoyed playing some games together. In the afternoon, we headed to the beach.
On day two, the boys woke up early ready for their first cricket match of the tour. All the boys played amazing cricket and enjoyed it against a tough opposition. The next day came and we had our first football match against national players. In the first game the boys were very close to winning and in the third game the boys played exceptionally well against a team that included 4 national players. Everyone enjoyed themselves and played really well. After the match we had a surprise as the staff had secured us all tickets to watch St Lucia play Dominica at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in a World Cup qualifying match, with St Lucia finishing
victorious in a 3-1 win. At the end of the game some boys managed to get a few of the players’ shirts and boots.
The next day, the boys woke up bright and early to play some more cricket. There were 3 teams who all batted very well and there were some stand out performances by many boys. After the exciting cricket matches, the boys went down to the beach to watch the sunset and eat some pizza.
On the fifth day, the boys woke up really early again to go on an amazing boat trip around the island to do some snorkelling and go in a mud bath, which were both great fun. While snorkelling, the boys saw some amazing creatures like a sea snake.
After a well-deserved lie in, the boys set off to another cricket match, as well as having a rematch against the same football teams they had already played. The first game saw a SHS win with three amazing goals. With a 1-1 draw in the second game, the boys were going for an unbeaten day which was so close, but a last minute goal saw a 1-0 victory to the opposition.
8 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2023
The next day would be one of the best with a trip to the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, to play one final match of cricket. In the first game, the boys bowled very well but could not reach their target against some rapid bowlers. After the matches concluded, the SHS boys all gave their shirts to the hosts on the other team who were ecstatic with their new shirts. The boys then spent their final night having a delicious dinner on the beach.
Everyone enjoyed the trip so much and want to thank all the staff for looking after us so well and giving us such an amazing experience.

WEST WITTERING GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP
Year 6 enjoyed a day’s fieldwork to West Wittering on the Sussex Coast. On a dry, but blustery day, it was a great opportunity to see the geographical study of coastal landforms, processes and proactive management in action. The boys were introduced to the study area, which included a discussion of spit formation, the impacts of coastal processes and the conflicts which arise from human activity.
The expansive dunes and salt marsh formation gave a great opportunity for exploration and a great view of the landforms and East Head’s location. A bi-polar evaluation of coastal defences was completed.
What a worthwhile day which will greatly help the boys understand the dynamic and complex nature of our coastlines.
YEAR 7 HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT
Year 7 enjoyed a unique tour of Parliament at a very special time. Travel plans were amended due to the King's Coronation preparations. Travelling on public transport from Surbiton to
Waterloo and on to Westminster on a nice spring day worked well, was very quick, supported the School’s sustainability aims and the boys enjoyed it!
An interesting introductory film on the history of Parliament prepared us well for the tour, through the Monarch’s entrance in the Victoria Tower, up to the Robing Room where the Monarch would rest and adjust robes before going along the Long Gallery and into the House of Lords. We passed the spot under which Guy Fawkes had lurked with his Gunpowder in 1605 and then in to the House of Lords passing the Monarch’s throne.
In to the Central Lobby, passing the Parliament Post Office admiring the statues and busts of many great former Prime Ministers; Churchill, Attlee, Lloyd-George and Thatcher, then through the “No” lobby of the House of Commons. Finally we came through the entrance the PM usually uses to access the House of Commons.
The tour concluded in the Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Palace dating back to the reign of William II. What a worthwhile, very educational and valuable trip for us all!

YEAR 4 TRIP TO THE FRENCH INSTITUTE
Year 4 headed to the renowned French Institute located in South Kensington, London.
A group went to the Quentin Blake Library where a member of the Institute read them a story in French. Then the boys worked very well in groups reading their own book, picking up details (author, story, and synopsis) and presenting this to their peers, accompanying staff and members of the Institute Library team. The morning concluded with an interactive quiz on French culture. It was wonderful to watch the collaboration and enthusiasm of the boys as they immersed themselves in each task achieving most impressive results and clearly enjoying the new challenges on offer.
The other group went on to do language activities, including a lot of speaking and interaction relating to the theme of
friendship and reinforcing topics we learnt this year. After lunch, we all settled in the Cine Lumiere and enjoyed watching an anime. 'Ernest and Celestine' is the charming story of an unexpected friendship between a mouse and a bear, conquering their differences and defying the odds which challenged them throughout the story. Whilst full of humour, the film highlights tolerance, friendship and personal growth. It was very much enjoyed by the boys and staff alike, generating several interesting conversations afterwards, with a number of boys saying they would like to watch more Ernest and Celestine adventures!
The boys really enjoyed their experience of such a unique opportunity to be immersed in French culture in the heart of London impressing through their eagerness to participate and the standard of their French.
YEAR 5 TRIP TO THE BAPS SHRI SWAMINARAYAN MANDIR
Year 5 enjoyed such an enriching day at the Neasden Temple. They entered the Mandir through the portico and were greeted by peacocks, lotus flowers and royal elephants which were expertly carved into the wooden courtyard. After taking off our shoes we were given a brief introduction and then made our way to the inner sanctum on the upper floor, where seven shrines, house murtis (sacred images) of the Deities. They participated in the wonderful prayer ceremony and
afterwards had the opportunity to marvel at the carvings of the pillars, ceiling and central dome. They proceeded to the ‘Understanding Hinduism’ exhibition on the lower floor which guided us through a journey of discovery into beliefs, values and wisdom of one of the world’s oldest religions. The tour concluded with a Q&A session which was very enlightening. In spite of the heat everyone had a wonderful day out which was truly an eye opener in every sense.

5 Activity Week
Year 8 enjoyed a superb week in the beautiful Ardeche region. Blessed with glorious weather until the final evening and breathtaking scenery, they tackled many outdoor and river based adventures with great stamina and no challenge proved too difficult. These included a 12km gorge hike, a 17km river descent, a 32km paddle, VERY high 'high' ropes and VERY long zip wires. As impressive as their stamina was the wonderful camaraderie and team work which was so evident, continuing to build superb memories of their last few weeks at SHS.
12 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2023
Year 7 enjoyed a truly ‘très bonne’ and a ‘magnifique’ experience at the wonderful Chateau de la Baudonniere in Normandy. Enjoying an outing to the market, many outdoor adventures, including the infamous mud assault course, challenging raft building, archery and aeroball; coupled with the traditional French indoor based activities of fencing and bread making, it has been a très jolie week!! Perfectly rounded off with the boys performing their own sketches and a visit to the iconic Mont SaintMichel, a fond au revoir and merci beaucoup concluded their stay!
SUMMER 2023 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 13
Year 6 aimed high through their countless challenging adventures in Land & Wave Dorset; rock climbing, raft building, numerous water based activities, an evening of crabbing in the harbour, rounded off with delicious fish and chips! Plenty of team building and fun activities back in the camp also contributed to some wonderful new memories!
14 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2023
What a wonderful week Year 5 enjoyed at Kingswood Grosvenor Hall. An engaging array of outdoor activities included building dens, lighting bonfires, climbing and secret missions in the sun. The exciting activities continued with obstacle courses, abseiling and laser quest, along with interesting insights about wildlife.
SUMMER 2023 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 15
Year 4's adventures took them to Windmill Hill, where they thoroughly enjoyed a fun packed few days of indoor and outdoor activities, including the ever popular giant swing, the zip wire, raft building, problem solving, aeroballing and fencing, to name but a few.
16 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2023
Year 3 had such a wonderful week, performing in their first concert and enjoying a theatre workshop. Outdoor den building followed in Juniper Hall, which were fully tested to establish if they were waterproof or not – yes some did pass! Hedgehog visits, bouncy castles, slides, parachutes and laser guns all added to the fun in school. A lovely day was enjoyed in Bocketts Farm, meeting many beautiful familiar and less familiar animals with the week being rounded off with a circus skills workshop.

School Events
YEAR 6 PRODUCTION OF ‘TWIST’
Year 6 took to the stage to perform their production of ‘Twist,’ a musical retelling of Oliver Twist. The play had been split into four scenes, allowing each tutor group to put their best actors forward for the leading roles.
There was a real buzz as the curtains opened and the performance began. Each scene had exceptional energy and all boys, whether in small roles or large, gave their all and it was definitely the best projection, characterisation and teamwork seen from the group showing so much progress since rehearsals started.
The songs gave the boys opportunities to showcase their musical talents. There were beautiful and confident solos complemented with ensemble singing which lifted the roof. The audience exploded with applause after each rendition and the pride in the hall was tangible.
For the first time, the costumes had been made by Theatre Club. Having mastered sound, lighting, makeup and stage management, this term we had turned our hands to costume.
It was a true spectacle of music, performance and entertainment and a real team effort. Well done to all boys involved and thank you to our Drama Prefects and Theatre Club members who provided such invaluable help and support during the performance:
Year 6: Dhruv S (Stage hand)
Year 7: Max A (Lighting), Leo F (Curtains) and Leo F and Max A (Makeup)
Year 8: Ayush A (Sound), Stein M (Backstage management), Thomas H, Seb F (Makeup) and Adam D, Alex P, Oliver S, Amar S and Arun S (General helpers)

MUSIC SOIRÉE
During the summer term, parents and guests were treated to an evening of outstanding music making at our annual Musical Soirée. This event showcases our most accomplished musicians and ensembles. We were also delighted to be joined by the Director of Music from Reed’s School, Mr Willey, who was able to see the high standard our boys are achieving in their musical endeavours.
As a dinner grace to commence the evening, SHS Voices sang “Non Nobis Domine”, a Latin setting of words from Psalm 115, attributed to William Byrd, who was a Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first.
This was then followed by the contrasting and very energetic sounds of the boys in the Senior Band, performing “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The audience were then treated to the first group of solo performers. Hugo J presented a superb account of Chopin’s intricate “Waltz in E minor” for the piano. Ruairidh M W trumpet playing effortlessly captured the Latin American flavour of “Tequila Sunrise” by Pamela Wedgwood. Philip M then had the audience in a rapt hush with his emotional account of Rachmaninoff’s haunting “Vocalise”.
The first part of the concert then closed with the woodwind ensemble giving a polished account of Shostakovich’s quirky “Waltz No. 2” After an opportunity for the audience to refresh their drinks, the second part of the event began with the Symphonic Wind Band performing an uplifting piece by their director Mr Rae, entitled “Buffalo Rock”. The next group of soloists featured Luke A brilliantly capturing the Cuban drumming rhythms in “Late in the Evening” by Paul Simon, followed by Joe H giving a superb demonstration of his jazz piano skills in “Jamming with Jools” by Brian Priestley. This was followed by Thomas B giving a technically accomplished account of “The Spider and the Fly” by Benjamin Britten. A demanding work, which was one of the composer’s few forays into Jazz.
The String Ensemble then closed the second part of the concert, with an emotional account of Sibelius’s impassioned “Andante Festivo”. After another short interval, George C roused everyone’s attention with his powerful drumming in “Hold the Line” by Toto. SHS Voices, then returned to perform “Fire!” by the contemporary British composter Jonathan Dove, combining unsettling rhythms on the piano, with three-part vocal writing. Brannon W then showed off some improvisatory flare on the
20 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2023
saxophone in “Billie's Bounce” by Charlie Parker. Arthur T then rocked the room, with his brilliant electric guitar playing in “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz. Jazz One then brought the evening to a foot tapping conclusion, with “C Jam Blues” by the jazz legend Duke Ellington.
During the evening, the audience were also treated to some personal reflections from the Music Prefects Arun S, Brannon W, George C, Joe H, Ruairidh M G and Thomas B, who all spoke confidently and with good humour about their time at Shrewsbury House School.
Such a brilliant evening of music making would not be possible without the support of our outstanding team of music tutors, including Mr Nugent, Miss Percy, Mr Rae, Miss Spence and Mr Jani. As Mrs Hubbard rightly pointed out in her words of thanks at the end, the largest vote of thanks must go to the boys themselves for the commitment to their music making and their parents for the support and encouragement you provide at home.
SUMMER 2023 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / 21
YEAR 3 & 4 CONCERTS
It was a pleasure to welcome so many parents to the Year 3 Concert and Year 4 Concerts this term.
Both events were a wonderful celebration of music making from some of our youngest learners, both in their class music lessons and their individual music lessons. In their class music lessons, Year 3 have been learning to play the recorder and Year 4 have been learning to play the djembe drums. Parents were treated to some of the results of their creativity in the concerts, with each Year 3 class performing a tune on the recorders and each Year 4 class giving a drumming performance. For many boys, giving their first solo performance in front of a large audience represented a significant milestone in their musical journeys. What was particularly remarkable was the extraordinary diversity of solo performances on offer, ranging from the piano, guitar and other orchestra instruments, to drum kit and electric guitar solos, along with mridangam drumming. As Mrs Hubbard pointed out, the pride on the boys’ faces made all the hours of practice worthwhile. In addition to the instrumental performances, Year 3 also presented a performance of the song "Earth" by the composer Russell Hepplewhite, with text by renowned children’s author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen. Year 4 presented a performance of a song by the Canadian composer Sarah Quartel. "The Beat of a Different Drum" celebrates freedom of expression and the music within each of us. The performance was especially impressive, as it required all the boys to coordinate patterns on the rhythm sticks in addition to the singing. Events such as these build memories that we hope boys and their families will carry with them long after they have left the school. We also express our thanks to their parents for the vital support and encouragement they provide to their musical education.
22 / SHREWSBURY HOUSE SCHOOL / SUMMER 2023
GREEK DAY
During the summer term, the boys celebrated Greek Day, under the scorching rays of Helios himself.
It is a day which encourages us to think about the high-water mark of civilization achieved by the Ancient Greeks. It is also a chance to enjoy the weird and wonderful stories and in assembly boys from Greek Club acted out famous scenes from
mythology with the audience trying to guess the character. There was also a (very hard) mythology detective quiz which had the boys busy scratching their heads. At break time Mr Davison hosted a discus competition, won by the reigning champion Alexander S, Year 8. As usual we were treated to a Greek-themed lunch. We had a lot of fun: as one boy said, "Why can’t Greek Day be every day?!"
MILLIONAIRE CLUB TEA PARTY
Those who excelled in Accelerated Reader joined Head of English, Dr Buckingham for a spectacular Millionaire Club Tea Party.
Well done to Caspar M, Year 3, Alex Y, Year 3, Felix S, Year 4, Lorenzo B, Year 5 and Jono H, Year 5, Chien Jui L, Year 6 and Seva M, Year 8, for joining the Millionaire Club and we look forward to organising further tea parties in the forthcoming academic year.

7 Seminar Series
GEORGINA USHER MBE
In the penultimate seminar of the series, Year 7 and 8 boys enjoyed a fascinating presentation from Ms Usher on her journey through the world of fencing. As well as handling the equipment and learning some of the more technical aspects of the sport, Ms Usher explained the need to break down barriers in sport and encouraged the boys to ‘look at and be curious about the systems and structures you are part of.’ Thinking beyond assumptions and stereotypes will support inclusivity and the boys clearly understood the role they can play and the impact they might have in the future. Thank you to Alex d W who supported the demonstration of the equipment.
ALEX HIBBERT
In the final talk of the Seminar Series, Years 7 & 8 enjoyed a breath-taking talk from world record-holding polar traveller, Alex Hibbert. As well as sharing his astounding achievements, Alex spoke about the number of times when plans do not work out, when aspects go completely wrong and how we develop strategies to succeed in even the most challenging
circumstances. As always, the boys were highly engaged, asking insightful questions and demonstrating their excellent knowledge across the curriculum. This was a truly inspiring way to end the Seminar Series and no doubt our boys will reflect on all they heard as they take on their own adventures in life.
School Community
AN EVENING WITH JAMES HASKELL
Thank you to the parents and staff who supported the Sports Dinner evening with guest speaker James Haskell on 16th June.
The irreverent chat from the celebrated rugby international and host of The Good, The Bad and The Rugby podcast (presented with fellow ex-Lion Mike Tindell and broadcaster Alex Payne.) From the sports field to I'm a Celebrity... Get me out of Here! It was such a great crowd and evening of entertainment, celebrating our school community and raising £1,800.

SHA FOOTBALL FUNDRAISER
To celebrate the end of exam week, the whole school donned their ‘funky’ socks and costumes for a fabulous afternoon of football fun, organised by the SHA Association. With fierce but very friendly competition, the boys entered into the spirit and expended much energy both on and off the pitch. Year 8 parents also took to the pitch in the much anticipated staff Vs parent contest, loudly cheered on by the boys. Our thanks go to all parents involved in organising such a successful event for our whole school community.
It was great to see the sun out, so many parents and the sheer enjoyment of the boys both on and off the pitch. The SHA raised £1232 for the SHA, to support the boy's enrichment and supported charities at Shrewsbury House.

WHITGIFT VS MATHS FOURS
After three sessions of selection competitions of speed maths on number theory, algebra and geometry involving our top-20 mathematicians in Y6-Y8 this week, our winning Maths Fours travelled to Whitgift School for our inaugural test match against a strong opposition team, a convincing and particularly satisfying team victory for all four boys where everyone played their part. Well done to Theo B, Year 8 (Captain), Seva M, Year 8, Alexander C, Year 7 and Yoonjoon B, Year 6.
Having conceded an early deficit in the first individual round that followed swiftly by losing the team round 4-5, we needed to pull something special out of the hat. Under the guidance of the masterful strategist Captain Theo, Maths Fours regained their composure with marginal wins in the pairs round plus three further individual rounds to pull away with an 11-point advantage going into the final race round. It was an unassailable lead that Maths Fours were not to surrender at the bell, despite losing the race round. The final score was Whitgift 41, SHS Maths Fours 50.

CELL MODELS
In order to prepare for their topic on 'cells' this term, Year 7 were asked to construct a model of a specialised cell over Easter. The year group were asked to become an expert on one particular plant or animal cell, researching its organelles, specific functions and overall adaptations. They could create their chosen model using any materials, making sure it was 3-dimensional and not any larger than an A3 piece of paper; cells are microscopic after all!
The variety and quality of the models were absolutely fantastic, demonstrating lots of creativity and accurate scientific detail.
WATER ROCKET CHALLENGE
Congratulations to the following boys: Hiro S, Thomas C, David K and William D-E
Sion P was awarded the overall winner – well done Sion.
Shrewsbury House Science Club participants (Year 5 –Henry K, Gregory N, Year 6 – Ruzhen G, Paul K), took on the annual water rocket challenge at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington.
The NPL is a world-leading centre that provides cutting edge measurement in science, engineering and technology. In glorious sunshine and perfect flying conditions we were in awe of the surroundings and the 35 rocket launch bays. Science Club used resources to make water rockets out of carbonated drinks bottles as aerodynamic as possible to fly at this annual event. We had bottles of various sizes, designs, with different wing shapes and even one that was going to transport an egg. After an initial change to our rocket launcher, the first rocket was launched and flew a respectable 5 metres. Through the round we managed to keep improving on this result where our furthest distance was around 50 metres. Our most successful launch was for
the Eggstra challenge where our egg remained unbroken in flight. The boys were very happy to be awarded a certificate for their efforts. The whole team thoroughly enjoyed the day demonstrating great resilience, perseverance and definitely followed the school motto of Alta Peto.

Sports Round-up
CRICKET
What a wonderful season of cricket it has been, with almost two hundred matches played! Straight off the bat in April the boys from all year groups performed superbly. A focus on development, fun and competition performance served the pupils very well, and they can be proud of all their achievements. Innovation and initiative sits at the heart of SHS Sport and we were proud to host the first-ever ‘Year 3 SHS Slam’. This marvellous event saw boys from six schools compete in a fun cricket festival led by our Year 8 senior pupils – a brilliant afternoon! There have been numerous highlights across the School: many of the Year 4 boys made a successful transition to ‘hard-ball’ cricket and heart congratulations to the U9A cricket team who ran out winners at the Downsend competition. And so it continues – not to be out done, the Year 5 boys enjoyed a stellar season and the U10A team proved too strong for all-comers at both the Caterham and Harrow School events. The senior SHS boys of course played their part and the 1st XI can be proud of reaching the Surrey County semi-final. Five wicket hauls were achieved by both Reuben G and Sam GS, and well done to Noah B who reached the remarkable target of fifty runs in his match versus Rokeby School. Enjoyable ‘hat-tricks’ were
achieved and enjoyed by Ethan L, Ishaan D, James M and Taran T. House Cricket proved (yet again!) to be an amazing event spread over four days in June – some inspirational sport for all to enjoy.
SHS was again recognised in the ‘Wisden Cricketer’ magazine as one of the top fifty prep schools for cricket in the UK –a wonderful achievement!
A day that will live long in the memory is the SHS community trip to the Oval to watch the Surrey T20 match. Over two hundred and fifty boys, families and staff enjoyed a tremendous evening of high-class sport.

HOUSE SWIMMING GALAS
After an incredible Activity Week, all of the boys enjoyed a marvellous SHS House Swimming event. As usual the whole-school result was only decided at the culmination of the final (of six) year group event. With strict minimum and maximum races for the boys, all pupils had the chance to contribute to the success of their House. Some simply stunning performances were witnessed across all of the events and the competition result was not decided until the last few races of the sixth event – the amazing Year 8 House gala. The level of competition in this latter event was incredible! Congratulations to every boy – from those starting their swimming journey all the way through to our elite individual medley swimmers.
The sports calendar concluded this term with each Year Group completing their swimming galas. Congratulations to the following boys for their Victor Lodorum placings:

SWIMMING (IAPS NATIONAL FINALS)
While most were enjoying a restful half-term, the elite swimmers of SHS were preparing for the IAPS National Swimming Championships which were hosted in the summer break at the London Aquatics Centre (London Olympics 2012 venue). With seven swimmers competing in six races it was wonderful to take such a large contingent to this prestigious event (qualifying from thousands of contestants across the country). The event was elite standard: double lane judges, big screen updates, twin end touch pads and full spectator grandstands. And the boys responded superbly! All relay teams and individual swimmers posted personal bests, improved placings and national standards. Every SHS team member can be super proud of their efforts and performances. A special mention for Declan M – having qualified 6th fastest in the country he went on to win his heat in what was the 3rd fastest time nationally in the 25m breaststroke. Unsurprisingly he qualified for the grand final and placed an incredible 4th in the country.

ATHLETICS
Athletics alongside cricket and tennis, has formed a valued and integral part of the boys’ sporting summer. With all pupils involved in both House athletics (Sports Day) and the PE-led House Quadrathlon, opportunity for all was not only assured, but enhanced. Add to that inclusion in external competitions and events, and you can see how highly rated this important sport is at SHS. Every year-group had an opportunity to represent the school in athletics meets this year. With Years’ 3-6 representing the school in the Downsend and Donhead athletics meet, and the senior boys competing at Claremont. The Donhead event produced some great competition where boys continued to develop and challenge themselves against other top athletes. On a glorious Saturday afternoon the boys acquitted themselves superbly. The Downsend event enabled all boys to get the opportunity to run, throw, jump, and be part of the relay. Congratulations goes to the U9A, U10A and U11A+B team who all won their respective age group competitions. Elsewhere the seniors participated in the Claremont athletics meet with some outstanding performances from both Year 7 and Year 8 teams, with the Year 8 team finishing 2nd overall. Some brilliant athletics events in which the boys performed superbly. Well done to all!
House Quadrathlon
Formerly the House Pentathlon, this paired-back and more focused event saw all the boys from across all age groups compete at 60m, 1000m, long-jump and cricket-ball throw. The House Quadrathlon combines both individual performance and overall team performance to produce an overall House winner. The pupils have worked through the different techniques for each event before having their times and distances recorded with some great improvements made. The fast development of these core skills has been very encouraging!

House Sports Days
Wow! What can be said about this glorious three-day event?
As far as the eye could see there were SHS boys running, jumping, and throwing (all manner of things!) in the hope of
scoring all important points for their House. Straight track, oval track, high jump, long jump, and three throw areas – all were utilised to their fullest in ensuring the boys were kept busy throughout three awesome afternoons of top sport. Smiles all-round!

ISFA FOOTBALL
HUGE congratulations to the Y6 U11A football group who enjoyed a brilliant end-of-season. Early in the summer term this fantastic football team were meeting at school for the long trip to St George’s Park (the home of English football). Having already qualified for the National ISFA finals the boys can be very proud of the fine efforts and performances in this elite competition. Not National Cup winners this year but the boys got close!
ROWING
It was again the turn of the senior boys to have the opportunity to row with Kingston Rowing Club. Their age predetermines the appropriate discipline; namely sculling. It was great to see some individuals progress to selection for single sculls. Those that have experienced the technical challenge of a craft of this type will certainly see the relevance of celebrating this achievement. Well done to all the Year 7 and 8 pupils who have taken to the water this term.
GOLF
Golf continues to be at sport popular with the boys at SHS. There are certainly many fine proponents among the current cohort. The SHS golf team had a tremendously successful summer term. They performed exceptionally well in multiple tournaments and emerged victorious in two challenging golf fixtures. The team's hard work and dedication to golf was evidenced on the scorecards. All involved can be very proud.
TENNIS
A record number of SHS pupils represented their school in tennis events this term. It has been amazing to see the enthusiasm for the sport across the whole school. We are lucky enough to be home to some of the finest young talent in the country, and we look forward to celebrating further the incredible exploits on the court of Nicholas C, Luca TB and young Luca H. Sitting below these elite performers is a whole raft of talented and superkeen tennis players, and it has been a pleasure to see so many in action over a vast number of competitions (singles and doubles).

PRIZE GIVING
It was wonderful to share such a splendid occasion with our whole community during our Prize Giving celebrations, the first to take place at the Sports Ground since 2019. Congratulations to all the boys for their many achievements throughout the academic year. Blessed with favourable weather, wonderful music, a superb poetry reading, an impressive closing speech from JJ A, our Head Boy, the afternoon was a great conclusion to the year. Our sincere thanks to James Priory, Headmaster, Tonbridge School for joining our special day and inspiring us all with his speech.

11 Leavers' Programme
Year 8 celebrated the end of their exams by starting their Leavers' Programme. The boys took part in a wide variety of activities and talks as part of a programme that has been designed to both celebrate their time at school and also to further prepare them for their transition to senior school.
Brilliant talks from Epic Risk Management about the risks associated with gambling, gaming and related addiction, Childnet, Oxygen, SPARKS, Senior School Masters and SHOBS all served to broaden the boys’ awareness in these key topics.
Inner Speilbergs shone through ‘film in a day’, of course followed by an ‘Oscars’ ceremony and valuable life skills were
developed through training in First Aid, Self Defence, Street Dancing, Banking and Finance and of course the ever critical Domestic Skills of ironing, sewing buttons and making a bed.
Visits to the two Trust Pre-Preps and a day in the community bracken bashing in Arbrook woods added to the eclectic experience of the Programme.
Generously peppered with superb cricket matches, a sports day and a swimming gala, what a rich and enjoyable Leavers’ Programme culminating in the highly entertaining skits performed by Year 8 at the final dinner.
