VERTICAL KAMPUNG : Responsive Urban Village for Integrated Community
Site : Size : Land : Client
an
Kampong Baru, Kuala Lumpur 3.03 Acre Mixed-Residential : UDA Holdings
The ramifications of most metropolitan cities, rapid growth, low - density and car - dominated landscape has led to the issues of limited green areas and a dissapering sense of community living. vertical kampung is a model urbanity developed to create a humane vertical sustainable habitat within the context of malaysia. its innovative design and layout are familiar, timeown elements of kampung settings. Suburban character is strongly grounded in the planning as communal facilities are provided in the core to catalyze social interaction. The sub division and housing plots are sold as sky-land. Each land comes with a basic house and a garden compound This scheme does more than simply as an alternative financial solution, but also as a strategy to allow the community to be part of the process that determines their attitude and growth. Appropriately, vertical kampung represents a successful translation of the traditional village and is testament
to excellent contextualization in vertical form. Thesis Statement Vertical kampong is a transformation of new vertical housing typology which synonymous Malaysia cultural & social aspects in orienting kampong settings & environment as the reflection of Malaysia regional variation in order to lead to a sustainable & healthy living community and environment for the current and future urban city. Vertical Kampung
Why Vertical Kampung
What is Vertical Kampung
The rapid pace of urbanization in Asian cities has transformed the physical and socio-economic landscapes of those cities. Throughout East Asia, the urbanization rate is 3 percent, and the rate of land expansion of major cities has reached 2.4 percent per year. The impact of this expansion is evident in the disappearance of urban villages of historical significance. The demand for real estate development has turned many traditional villages into modern high-rise developments, that only inadequately meet the needs and lifestyles of existing inhabitants.
1. The expression “urban village” is a term to describe a place in the city which has all the characteristics of a village.
The slow modernization process of post - independece in malaysia lead to the gradual transition of settlement typologies. This new settlement typologies include kampung dato keramat, kampung kerinchi, kampung abdullah hukum and next will be kampung baru. the last few years the kampung kerinchi has totally change from kampung community into urban majority was introduced for urban elite, the new project was developed from sub-urban to formal development such as shopping malls, superblocks, apartments, elevated higways, etc. Facing pressure from modern development projects, todays kampung are spread across the city, filling the spaces between formal development, most of these characteristic are lost as one transition into modern settlement typologies that favor privacy and isolation over an overbearing sense of community and dependence.
2. An urban village approach to controlling development seeks to combination with residential, recreational, educational and work environment all these activities making them more accessible within a single centre which is well served by public transport. 3. An urban village is an urban precinct located around a high frequency public transport node or interchange incorporating: • A mix of land uses, including retail, commercial, employment, residential and leisure. • Attractive and well used public spaces. • A safe and convenient pedestrian environment. • Urban design elements which promote community pride and identity.
Issue 1. The rapid pace of urbanization in kuala lumpur has transformed the physical and socio-economic landscapes of those cities. The impact of this expansion is evident in the disappearance of urban villages of historical significance. The demand for real estate development has turned many traditional villages into modern high-rise developments, that only inadequately meet the needs and lifestyles of existing inhabitants. 2. The vertical living nowadays killed the community lifestyle. The overall form and design layout of vertical housing at present doesn’t potray Malaysian cultural and social context. The layout are not aimed to cater ever growing family throughout time and needs. 3. The lack of green living in the current vertical housing in Malaysia. The current vertical housing layout does not allow occupants to have green planting within their house compound or even to have green open spaces within the whole vertical housing compound to be functioned during daily or festive time.
Objective First - to propose new vertical housing typology that synonymous Malaysia`s cultural & social context Second - is to design a vertical housing layout scheme in relation to kampong settings & environment that in reflecting Malaysia regional variation Third - Is to give new solution for the current vertical housing as well as for the future in order to lead to a sustainable and healthy vertical living community and humane habitat environment

Site Setting
Kampung Bharu Development The socio-economic development rate for kg Bharu in comparison to other parts of the city had been affected by the complex process of overcoming the land-matters when it comes to development. subsequently this has led to to an effect of under-developed district within the central district of KL. organising resources and facilitating land matters is hoped to be able to provide a way-forward towards development. it is also hoped with development and better city facilities would jump-start and unlock the benefits of a city center district living to the kampung baru community
Existing Land Use Kampung Baru Transformation The new development in kampung bharu with the existing kuala lumpur city centre (KLCC) would bring further economic activity to kuala lumpur. The heritage and culture which is kampong bharu would bring about an potential and opportunity to benefit the city in terms of tourism as well as cultural and heritage within the city. Apart from economic growth, under the guise of nation building, the development of kampung bharu, as a national agenda is an opportunity for more local developers, professionals, consultancies and local companies to be part of national project, to gain project experience so to make them more competitive in the market today.
