Favourite Memories/ Autographs

From the Performing Arts Coordinator: Another amazing year has passed, bringing with it many highlights for the hardworking upper primary students. Our approach of combining choir work and drama with our Boys Choir and Girls choir continued to provide a sound structure for our Performing Arts curriculum this year. However instead of working with separate repertoire in each choir, we started from the beginning of Term 1 learning the songs from the musical Masquerade, while drama time was spent looking at basic performance skills. Towards the end of Term 1, work with the script and story line began in drama; auditions were held, and due to the high level of enthusiasm and students wanting to be involved, two casts were chosen. Term 2, and the hard work really starts to happen. From lunch time gatherings to help with choreography, squashing 120 Grade 3 - 6 students in one classroom for practice, and finally spreading out to the much appreciated Football Club-rooms to learn some movement aspects of our performance, as well as having daily singing practise just to keep all the songs still in our minds. Alongside all this, students in class have been kept busy making props from papier-mâchÊ food, rocks and fountains, and probably the favourite their own mask.

I hope you enjoy looking through this souvenir booklet, as it highlights some of the wonderful memories from 2009 Performing Arts’ Time.

Story Overview ACT 1: SCENE 1 MORNING The story opens in the village square, Arlecchino and the players introduce Prince Nicolo and the pauper Nicola and the action begins. Villagers are busy working and playing, soldiers move through the market and arrest a group of children begging. ACT 1: SCENE 2 It is the Prince’s birthday; Nicolo arrives in the village square for a treat, an outdoor Latin lesson. He is accompanied by Pantalone, the royal advisor and Linguine, the royal teacher. During the lesson Nicolo, looking for fun and excitement, escapes from his teacher and disappears into the village. Nicola also anxious to escape flees her father who is insisting she should be out begging in the streets. The two meet by the village fountain and noticing the “similarity” in name and appearance decide to exchange places for the day. The morning scene ends with the arrival of the Travelling Players to the village. They bring news from the outside world and the promise of entertainment. ACT 2: AFTERNOON Arlecchino arrives and takes charge of the action. He directs the attention of the audience to Nicolo disguised as a pauper being instructed about begging by Scappino and Nicola having lunch in the palace and accepted by all as the Prince. Both Nicolo and Nicola quickly realize that things need to change. The carnival begins in the village with performances by the travelling players. Nicolo and Nicola meet back at the fountain, both are 4

captured and a shocking announcement is made from the palace that the King is dead. Nicola still disguised as the Prince is proclaimed as the new King. ACT 3: EVENING All Paradiso mourn the death of their King and prepare for the Masquerade Ball where the Prince will be crowned as the new King. Arlecchino organizes invitations to the Ball and entry to the palace. The coronation begins with considerable confusion about the identity of the Prince and Arlecchini is needed to help identify the true Prince. Nicolo is crowned as King of Paradiso and a new beginning is heralded.

Together we laughed, cried, forgot lines, repeated songs, learnt dances, practiced ’til our bodies complained, got yelled at, received praise, wowed audiences and had the time of our lives. “Masquerade has created memories that will stay with us forever.
