Value Drawings T

hese value drawings were made on Adobe Illustrator. I used the paintbrush tool in many different sizes and only used shades of gray, black and white to show the values of each object being drawn. First I would mark down the values in giant blobs and then I would go back and draw lines over then in a more detailed manner. In most of the images, the

8 The Artist Close Up 2013

part that you see first is the white parts, or the lighter parts. My eyes also tend to follow the directions of the lines drawn. The objects themselves are all something where you hold liquid in like a ceramic container, pitcher, tea pot, coffee mug, and another pitcher. I chose these props because it was part of the assignment.

Color and

Value T

hese are my five color value drawings. I made these drawings using adobe illustrator using the brush tool. I usually started by painting a middle value of the color, then adding the darker and lighter values as I went on. In all the images, you see the object first and your eyes go to where there is the highest

contrast between light and dark because it is most different. I chose all these objects to be something you drink out of because I wanted to keep the same theme going on. The first one is analogous, the second is complementary, and the rest are monochromatic. And yes, they are all falling from somewhere up high.

Shape I

made this picture using Adobe Illustrator. I used the pen tool to outline the shapes that I saw on the original picture, then I filled the shapes with the general color they had using the eyedropper tool. I started from the background shapes and made my way forward. I think you actually see the whitest part of the cup first because it is the brightest and almost demands attention. Then you notice the brown coffee, rest of the cup, saucer, and then the background. I chose this coffee cup picture because it had a good range of values and it was our assignment. Dangerous Drink T

his picture is a variation on my original “Coffee” artwork. First I changed the color scheme to one that consisted of red, white and black. Then I changed the brush strokes to a hazy loose kind of look. The final product looked creepy and the coffee suddenly didn’t look too friendly. To me, the coffee

almost looked like it was some sort of evil poisonous drink that with one sip could possibly kill you. Thus the tile came to mind, “Coffee Cup from Hell.”

The Sky is Falling! This article is a look into the making of this poster and all the elements that made it happen. This is basically an explanation of the whole process that was used in terms of Craft, Concept, and composition.

T

he program I used to make this picture is made the sky look so I ended up going with that inAdobe Illustrator. First I sketched out some stead of just a regular blue color. I picked the brush ideas on paper with pencil, but then I began tool, chose a light blue color for the stars and startto draw it out on a tabloid sized blank document ed adding tiny dots to represent the stars. After that on Adobe Illustrator. I used the shape tool to put a I added yellow ordinary brush lines going diagonal borderline between the sky and the grass because I across the sky to represent falling meteors. I wantknew I wanted a landscape type of feel. After having ed to have something in the grass like a towel where just a green and blue rectangle on my page I decid- people could sit on but I decided to make a chair ined that the grass needed to have a little more dimen- stead. I wanted to make the chair stand out against sion. Next I used the paintbrush tool the grass so I picked the complementary The grass is and picked a slightly darker shade of color of green, which is red. I used the composed of line tool in Illustrator to draw the chair green and started making short thin lines to represent the grass. I started individual brush in a view from behind. I started with the from the bottom of the poster all the legs and worked my way up. Then for a way to the horizon line at the top. I strokes and also little peek at the seat, I just drew it in thought the grass still needed more has lighter and with the brush tool. I also added darker dimension so I went back and picked shades of red to make the chair appear as darker values a lighter shade of green to make small if it was more 3 dimensional. When I was lines to have highlights in the grass. added on to it. satisfied with the chair I needed to add Where there is a highlight there has the text. I looked for an interesting text to be shadow, therefore I picked a dark shade of green in dafont.com and found one under the sci-fi categoand added dark spots to the grass. The next part was ry that I thought would look good with the sky and the moon. I used the circle tool to draw a circle and meteor shower theme. I typed out the name of the put that layer behind the grass. I picked a light gray event in white font so it would stand out against all color for the moon after looking at pictures on the In- the dark colors of the background. Then I typed out ternet. I saw that the real pictures of the moon had the date the meteor shower will take place in slightly craters and dark spots so picked the brush tool once smaller font, and the time in even smaller font. Finalagain and began to draw irregular shapes of craters ly I typed the words of encouragement by the chair at with a darker gray color. I colored the craters in and the bottom of the poster. The white looked okay, but picked a lighter color and began drawing light spots I played around with the stroke color and thought a on the moon to give it a more realistic feeling. The sky blue stroke looked better than just plain white so I needed a little something so I picked the blue layer kept it. and went to the effect gallery and played with some of the effects. The artistic effects didn’t help much be- For the next draft, I decided to try and incorporate cause they would turn the sky gray, so I went to the the text into the image. I made the text the same color texture effects. I liked the way the grain texture effect as the meteors and made it go the same direction to 2013 The Artist Close Up 21

make the text feel like meteors. I also wrapped the words around the chair in the same yellow color to make them stand out. For the third draft I made the words go from smaller to bigger to try and mimic the shape of a meteor. I made the meteors blue and yellow and bigger in a way. I also wrapped the brush lines around the words to make them more meteor like. I added a blue stroke to the type to make it the same color as the meteors. On the bottom, I made the words match the width of the chair and made the font a light green color to match the grass a little more. I created the final version of my Orionids Meteor Shower Poster. Instead of making the meteors thick regular lines, I used a more artistic brush stroke that starts out thick at the beginning and ends up thin at the end, which looks more like real meteors in the sky. I also made the text by the moon a darker blue color so it would be a higher contrast with the light gray, thus making it easier to read. As for the text at the bottom by the chair, I made that a lighter green so it would stand out more after I print the poster out. These finishing touches will make this poster

22 The Artist Close Up 2013

both interesting and easy to read. Composition When talking about the composition of this particular poster, there are key parts that draw the viewer in. One of the first things one might notice is the red chair at the bottom of the poster. This is probably the first thing someone sees because it is placed on top of the dark green grass. They are complementary colors so the red chair stands out more than anything in terms of contrast. Then the eyes of the viewer might go to the silhouette of the person and read the text. To find out more information they will look at the poster and read the event and the information about it. Then the viewer notices the meteors, stars and the moon and puts the picture together. They might stare at the direction the meteors go and the different colors because that is what the event is about. Another reason why the viewer might stare at the sky the longest is because there is more going on in that area than any other part of the picture. The sky has more text, the moon, the meteors, and the stars, which is a reason to look at it longer. It might also have to do with the simple fact that the sky contains brighter colors than the rest of the picture. The moon also has details that

might draw the viewer’s eyes. The moon has a light gray color as the base color of the whole object and then it has darker gray tones and lighter tones to add dimension and make it appear as if it has craters. Adding these different values makes the moon more interesting to look at than just a plain gray circle. By having the text on a diagonal going the same direction as the meteors, it makes it look like the text is part of the picture. The text almost becomes the meteors and since both are going the same direction, it allows the reader to know how to read the text without being too confused. After everything one may take notice of the grass in the picture. The grass is composed of individual brush strokes and also has lighter and darker values added on to it. The grass grows darker in the horizon part of the picture and also under the legs of the chair to show the shadows that the chair might create. Something to take note of is that when this picture is printed out, the colors look darker on paper than the computer screen. When, printed out, the person in the chair is hardly noticeable against the dark greens of the grass. The black doesn’t stand out against the dark green. The person in the chair might not even be noticed when looking at the poster from far away. Once you get closer to read the text by the chair, you might notice

the silhouette that symbolizes the viewer when he or she goes to watch the meteor shower. Concept Now I will talk a about the concept of this project. The assignment for this project was to create a poster or album art of something that incorporates either sky or weather. I chose to do a poster because I saw many posters everywhere around me and I wanted to try to make one for once. I wanted to make the poster inform people of an event because I thought it would be more fun to do, almost like an advertisement. I was wondering what event I could do that could include sky or weather without being a natural disaster or something that warns the public. That is when I came up with a meteor shower. I did brief research on actual meteor showers and before I knew it I found many websites naming meteor showers with the time and dates. I liked the idea of a meteor shower poster because the pictures of meteor showers really look pretty. I instantly pictured the poster design in my head. I pictured a landscape and started drawing it out. I wanted the poster to be something that was simple and got to the point of what the event was supposed to be and when it took place.

Variations in the Sky T

hese three pictures are variations on my finished meteor shower poster. I tried changing the color schemes and brush strokes/styles on each one. I immediately received some interesting results after I changed a few things. On the first picture, I changed the brush strokes to a thicker stylized one and the color scheme to a bright one with pinks, greens, and oranges. I liked how this variation was a little crazy, but at the same time there was something appealing and happy about it. The next variation

24 The Artist Close Up 2013

is just changing the color scheme to one of brownish and orange colors, which really made the poster look like a dry desert land. The colors also have a calming feeling while staring at it. The next one has a changed brush stroke that gave it a ghostly feeling that looks like fog or mist. The place almost gives off the feeling of a haunted place where everything is not what it seems.

Line Variations

T

his is the original picture that I based my two variations on. The only thing I did to change the original was play around with the brush strokes until I got some pretty interesting results. On the first variation, the lines are heavier and overall it has a look that seems elegant in a way because the lines look like they have been carefully made with a paintbrush. On the second vari-

ation, all the lines were changed to jewels, but from a little farther away it looks like they are small pieces of candy. It makes the bottle look fun and sweet.

T

his is a sculpture of a wolf that I made in Ceramics class during my senior year of high school. We were each given a pile of paper plates in class and told to make a sculpture of an animal. I started out by cutting the paper plates into medium sized strips and stapling them together into a shape of an upside down cone to get the basic structure of the wolf and get an idea of the size I wanted to make it. Then I started constructing the arms and legs out of more strips of paper plates. I made the nose separate from the other pieces and then the tail as well. Once the body was constructed, I started adding fur by cutting the paper plates into strips and then carefully using scissors to cut very thin fur like pieces from the plates. I would start gluing the layers one by one with a hot glue gun. Finally after the body had enough layers of glue and thin strips, I glued the tail and paws on the wolf body. The head was next where I began constructing the shape with more strips of paper plates. When the shape was done I glued the thin strips of paper to the head and covered it in fur. For the eyes I put two dry drops of hot glue and put small pieces of paper for the eyelids. The nails on the paws were the last detail to be added. The story of why I decided to make a wolf sculpture is different. I chose to make a wolf because a few days before I was watching a movie called, “Dances with Wolves.” In that movie there was a wolf that the main character met. In the movie the wolf doesn’t harm the main character and they almost become friends. The point is towards the end of the movie some bad characters kill the wolf and it was a very sad moment for me. I love wolves and I found that scene very sad because the wolf named Two Socks was killed for absolutely no reason. So this sculpture was dedicated to Two Socks.

Exquisite Corpse A look into the making of this piece and a little bit of background.

T

he artwork that you see here was made by eight different artists that folded a big piece of paper into eight sections. Each artist was assigned one number and they could only draw in the box with their number on it. Once the artist drew whatever they wanted in their assigned box, they would pass the folded paper to the artist next to them who would draw in their own numbered box. This routine went on eight times until all the boxes were filled. With many different artists mixing their styles and ideas together, the results as a whole were very interesting. Some parts of the picture made sense while others were very random. Since each artist had their own big piece of paper, we switched with another group that was doing the same thing. In the end we ended up getting a picture that we had no part in creating. Our next task was to recreate this random artwork into our own style and the type of things we usually draw. Having so many different things on my paper, I found this assignment to be very challenging. I found myself staring at this artwork for hours at times. Finally I decided to turn it upside down and start drawing around the eye. I pretty much kept going from there and started drawing and erasing a little bit as I went. This lead to my finished product which is on the next page.See if you can spot pieces of the original drawings in the new one!
