The Thacher School Report on Giving 2010-2011

The most important gifts of a Thacher education do not come from a book or a lesson plan. They come from the people and the interactions that happen outside or alongside the curriculum. For some, these gifts are lifelong friends, a love of learning, and willingness to take on challenges. For others, it is a moral compass, having truly internalized the School’s values of honor, fairness, kindness, and truth. Each of these gifts is made possible by our generous community of donors. Your gifts translate into transformational experiences for our students, and for this, we are very thankful. In fiscal year 2010-2011, your contributions totaled over $2.6 million for the Annual Fund and $2.5 million in new gifts for endowment and capital needs.

I speak for all at Thacher when I say how very much we truly and deeply appreciate your generous support. It means the world to this School. Thacher would not, and could not, be what it is without your philanthropy.

Your dollars allow the Horse Program to thrive; athletes to compete beyond the bounds of our small valley; deserving students to attend the School who could not otherwise afford do so; talented faculty to offer exciting and rigorous academic challenges to our students. on behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank every donor, volunteer, and staff member who contributed to the School in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Thacher relies on the generosity of alumni, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, friends, and foundations to support approximately 15 percent of the annual operating budget.

Without this significant assistance, the School could not sustain many program elements which make the Thacher experience both powerful and unique. If you have not visited campus recently, I encourage you to journey to Casa de Piedra to witness the Thacher community in action and see the impact of this annual fund support. You will observe dedicated faculty challenging diverse and talented students to push harder and reach higher at every turn.

Thacher Traditions • Reading of The Chambered Nautilus at the beginning of each school year—because it speaks of growth and change for students and faculty.

• A school that is connected and respects those who came before and is committed to those yet to come; the vision of SDT, AST, and David Twichell; the wisdom of Jesse Kahle and Quong Lee; the dedication of Betty Saunders, Marvin Shagam, and Lucy Buell; and more recently, the distinctive leadership of Michael Mulligan.

• The Thacher Toad—which symbolizes a sense of humor about one’s self and a good balance between athletic achievement and life skills.

• The Honor Code—which reminds us to do the right thing at the right time in the right way, even when the other thing is easy and without apparent consequences.

• A tradition of commitment to community—class, school, the Ojai, the county, the world—and to those less fortunate—“to whom much is given, much is expected.”

• Traditions of excellence in all we do and believe—academic, athletic, social, and cultural.

• The love of the outdoors—camping, horses, and the love of nature and of testing oneself and reliance on others.

• Singing of the school song—“May honor, fairness, kindness, and truth be ours…” is a refrain that echoes and guides alumni through life.

• Finally, at the core, a tradition of “personal responsibility”—to self, to values, and to community. Thacher students give back.
