Horse department members Susan Hardenbergh, Lori Schryver, and Kristen Finch will lead eight people for an overnight experience to Patton’s Cabin, The Thacher School’s cozy nook in the Sespe Wilderness. The group will take an easy 45-minute hike to the cabin where you can ride horses, hike, swim, read under the big sycamores, and sleep under the stars (horses will be available for trail rides). You will be fed a hearty and delicious dinner that night (bring your own wine), and breakfast and lunch the next day. This trip is the ultimate backcountry trip for mountain bikers: long steady climbs with views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands, technical single-track descents through remote canyons and a night of camping, good food and camaraderie without having to carry any camping gear on your bike. Join Brian Pidduck CdeP 1992 and Weston Richardson CdeP 1980 (parent of Jack ‘15) on an overnight mountain bike trip from Ojai to Patton’s Cabin in the Sespe on the Friday before Winter Alumni Weekend (January 10-11, 2014). Gear and food will be packed into Patton’s and be waiting for your arrival. At Patton’s we will enjoy a Bar-B-Que and relax in the rustic comfort of the cabin and revel in the beauty of a night in the Sespe. On the following day you can chose to ride back over Nordhoff Ridge and enjoy a thrilling descent of Gridley Canyon or drive back to Ojai from the Piedra Blanca Trailhead (a short distance from Patton’s Cabin). There are multiple routes for approaching Patton’s Cabin from Thacher. We will choose the appropriate route based upon the level of experience of the riders. That being said, this trip is best suited for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers. Restrictions: Maximum of 6 riders. Trip will be Friday before Winter Alumni Weekend, January 10-11, 2014. 903. Run or Hike the Dipsea, Followed by Lunch at Stinson Beach
Meet in Old Mill Park in Mill Valley, at the start to the famous seven-mile Dipsea Trail, to experience a morning following the trail and scaling its many stairways through the verdant redwoods of the North Bay. Climb Cardiac Hill to take in panoramic coastline views. Then head down toward Stinson to enjoy a group picnic at the beach. Your leaders are Thacher alumni Morgan Smith (CdeP ‘85) and Sarah Lavender Smith (CdeP ‘86), parents of Colly ‘16. Both are avid trail runners who love to do the Dipsea. When: Sunday, September 22, 2013. Morgan will start with the hikers at 8:30 a.m. Sarah will head out with the runners about 45 minutes later. They will make sure that no one gets left behind. The whole group will finish around the same time and enjoy a catered box lunch at the park next to the beach. Restrictions: This is a strenuous trail with approx. 2,200 feet of elevation gain and loss from start to end.
