Thacher’s loyal and passionate alumni continued to support the School with great enthusiasm this year. Thacher is a leader in participation among independent schools with 55.75 percent of alumni contributing to the Alumni Fund. The fund also surpassed $1 million for the fourth consecutive year. Grandparents play an important role in the School’s fundraising efforts. Under the leadership of Tom and Esther Wachtell (Ashley CdeP 2013 and Alexis ’15), grandparents raised over $50,000 in unrestricted donations for the Annual Fund in the 2012-2013 fiscal year. This year, Thacher launched an unprecedented effort to increase membership in the Boot Hill Legacy Society. The “I Will” campaign garnered 105 new supporters to increase the number of members to 504. Thacher community members who commit to the Boot Hill Legacy Society strengthen Thacher’s endowment, facilities, faculty and academic resources, and financial aid through their generous support now and in the future. Thacher acknowledges the commitment and vision of those loyal donors who are dedicated to its continued excellence.

TUckER FLEmING REmEmBERS ThAchER In August of this year, Thacher’s endowment received a significant boost in the form of a $2.9 million bequest from Howard “Tucker” Fleming CdeP 1943. A member of the Boot Hill Legacy Society since 2001, Tucker was a longtime supporter of his alma mater and an avid collector of Hollywood memorabilia.

Tucker and his lifelong partner, Charles H. Williamson, evenly distributed their nearly $6 million estate between Thacher and The Huntington Library. According to the executor of his estate, Tucker attributed his kindness and manners to his years at Thacher.

Tucker and Mr. Williamson were well-known collectors and dealers in Los Angeles; they specialized in photographs, manuscripts, and other autographed memorabilia from the realms of literature, art, music, dance, theater, and film. One highlight of the collection was correspondence from F. Scott Fitzgerald to actress Ina Claire that includes a note delivered just hours before their date, as well as a separate note sent the next morning in which Fitzgerald apologizes for his “boorish behavior.”

Gifts such as this to the unrestricted endowment offset the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Thacher education, giving the School strategic flexibility to ensure the strength and breadth of its program both now and in the future.

marVIN h. ShaGam FacUlTy chaIr Mr. Shagam is no longer in the classroom, but his influence on generations of Thacher students continues to inspire. Last spring, Mr. Shagam suffered a heart attack and had a heroic battle with pneumonia. The Thacher community rallied to bring him back to health. Emails, letters, and postcards flooded in from alumni and parents all over the world. Faculty rotated bringing him meals and reading the wonderful missives to him. The Thacher community were thankful for the opportunity to let Mr. Shagam know all that he has done to influence their lives. Nonetheless, he refused to believe that he would be out of commission for long. Remarkably, he returned to the classroom to finish his last classes just before graduation.

“I was dearly touched by the generous gift When Mr. Shagam reached his to Thacher by this fine family. That it was 50th year of teaching at Thacher in in my name is one of the most cherished 2008, a fundraising effort began moments in my life.”

—Marvin Shagam to permanently endow a teaching chair in his honor. That fund grew to $500,000. In the midst of Mr. Shagam’s remarkable recovery last spring, two young alumni chose to recognize Mr. Shagam during his lifetime by ensuring that his legacy will endure for future generations by completing funding for the Marvin H. Shagam Faculty Chair with a pledge of $1,500,000. The School wishes to acknowledge and thank William E. Oberndorf CdeP 2008 and Peter C. Oberndorf CdeP 2004 for this selfless act of generosity and kindness.

Now officially “retired,” Marvin continues to live on campus, host formal dinner, and his health has improved enough to resume his international travels. He went to Thailand and Brazil this summer. This fall, he traveled to West Virginia to continue his long-time work with prisoners, and he traveled to Zimbabwe over Thanksgiving break.
