This collection includes paintings of a variety of different subjects but many are of themes that I return to repeatedly such as dogs and their owners, birds and flowers. The starting point for all my work is something I have seen and as I walk with my dog daily from home to my studio, it might be a chance encounter that inspires a painting, perhaps the image of a dog walker (p.7) that catches my eye or some birds, (p.8). At other times I make a more conscious decision to seek out subject matter of interest. I travel around the area of Cornwall where I live on the look out for an inspiring image such as the goose and gate, (p.5) seen in a local village or a chicken coop, (p.3) on a smallholding. A place I visit specifically to draw is a bird sanctuary called Paradise Park, (p.10) which is home to the flamingos in these paintings and birds of all sorts are a recurring theme, such as the wood pigeons that built a nest in the Buddleia outside my studio window, allowing me to observe, sketch and paint the brief transition from egg to fledglings, (backcover). One of my favourite subjects are flowers, (inside frontcover, p.4, p.11) which I enjoy painting for the possibilities of shape and colour they offer as well as the pleasure of observing nature at close hand.
