Judith Cain was born in York in 1944. Having studied painting at Leeds College of Art from 1960 to 1964, she went on to do a post graduate year at Goldsmiths College, London University. She taught part-time in a number of universities, and then in 1985, accepted a full time post in the Fine Art Department at Leeds Metropolitan University, where she worked, until her retirement in 2006. Paintings made in her long career have been fuelled by research trips to various parts of the world. But since lockdown and covid she has been more influenced by things closer to home.. Whilst the interest in landscape, nature and plants is always evident in the paintings; colour, pattern and a close observation of traditional textile and other crafts together with a sense of cultural history have taken on increasingly significant roles in the development of ideas. Her forthcoming exhibition in March 2024, has resulted in a new body of work focusing on her garden and everything in it, jugs and pots with personal significance, simple still life arrangements that she makes around the house and in her studio and many visits to wonderful exhibitions and collections including those at the V&A, British Museum, Garden Museum, Chelsea Physic Garden, not to forget the numerous visits to amazing gardens, art galleries and museums all over England and Europe. Last year she revisited the wonderful archeological museum in Naples to look specifically at the original Roman frescoes rescued from Pompeii and Herculaneum. All this has and more has influenced her new paintings.
Judy has exhibited worldwide, and in 2004 as part of a solo touring exhibition, a large body of paintings was exhibited at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, London, exploring the flora & landscape of Kazakhstan. This work then toured to major municipal galleries in England, including Leeds City Art Gallery. An illustrated catalogue entitled ‘Being in Place: Landscapes of Central Asia’ accompanied this touring show and was funded by the AHRB in 2003.
In 2008, Judy was commissioned to design 10 floor pieces for the new radiotherapy reception area of St James Hospital in Leeds, accompanied by a series of ten related paintings. The work is an integral part of the feeling of healing and rehabilitation in that wing of the hospital.
She has won numerous awards, including Northern Regional Prizewinner at The Discerning Eye in 2010, The Laing: - northern prize winner in 2003, and the Harewood Landscape Open in 1995. Her work can be found in Public, Private and Corporate Collections worldwide. Judith Cain has been exhibiting with Thackeray Gallery since 1994.
