Tao Luang Studio

While today the district of Sankhamphaeng remains a centre for many kinds of crafts, the Tao Luang Studio is carrying on the original pottery tradition. Even though modern technology mass produces fine ceramics, we still treasure the touch and feel of handmade pottery thrown on the wheel. We marvel as a master potter guides the rising clay into gorgeous shapes, each one a little different. Add to this the application of decoration and colours taken from the ingredients of nature, and we have the embodiment of both art and function in one piece. That is the essence of the ceramic-ware of Tao Luang (literally the â&#x20AC;&#x153;great kilnâ&#x20AC;?), hidden away in a Lanna-styled house nestled within a small fruit orchard. Although drawn from their heritage, maintaining ancient styles and techniques, the designs are distinctive and contemporary. Only local sources of clay are used, and the natural colours are taken from different varieties of wood-ash. In fact, no chemicals are applied at any stage of production.

Aranyik

This high-grade stainless steel tableware owes its origin to ancient times when Siamese kings fought battles on elephants against the invading Burmese. It is hand forged and beaten by smiths of the same community who provided weapons to the royal army in Ayuddhaya and their tools and processes have not changed much over centuries. Today, their classically modern designs and finishing quality, still fit for a king, present a rare opportunity to own and use dining utensils that are caringly and individually handmade.

Na Pho

These silks from northeastern Thailand (Isarn) are very special. H.M. The Queen has assisted an exceptionally talented weaver who presented her with an exquisite traditional pha-sin (woven skirt). The weaver’s daughter then created a production group as a means to promote the village economy, redesigning the patterns and creating modern fashions using the ancient techniques. This fabulous fabric, with choice colours, has created much interest in Europe, appearing at major international exhibitions. Yet, this remains essentially a village programme centred around a community that is meeting the globalised world. Brown Tone

Prae Pan

Prae Pan is a weaving cooperative of women from seven rural villages, each hand-crafting a different type or style of textile. All weavings are naturally dyed and colour-fixed using local plants and trees. Both cotton and silk are used , often with traditional mudmee designs where the weft yarns are tie-dyed prior to weaving to create patterns that fall into place when woven onto the warp. This hand-made product from Khon Kaen, northeastern Thailand, represents the preservation of an age-old village craft of high quality while the income generated empowers women to influence and maintain the true values of their community in today’s fast changing society.

“Pan Mai” (a mix of woods) refers to the leaves, fruits, flowers, sap, berries, barks and roots that create natural dye colours for silk and cotton weaving by a women’s cooperative in a dozen villages in Isarn (northeastern Thailand). Established by the Appropriate Technology Association in the 1980s to revive nearly lost dyeing traditions, the cooperative now runs itself, successfully providing much-needed additional income through a rural home industry in an area often suffering from long periods of drought. Some of the women specialize in weaving while others focus on sewing and dressmaking, thus adding value and enhanced beauty to their products.

Nong Takai 10

Nong Takai is a typical Isarn* village. Its flat, arid fields depend on uncertain rain to yield a sufficient rice crop. Instead of migrating, the women find extra income from their refined skills to create Thai silk-from the moth to the cloth. Chachoengsao Crafts

The joy of village crafts often comes from the transformation of waste into an attractive object. Water buffalo horn from controlled abattoirs is carefully selected for its colour, white and light brown being rarer than black. Artisans in Chachoengsao, east of Bangkok, sand the rough horn, slice it to size and, sitting cross-legged with the horn in their toes, carve using home-made chisels and horn mallets. Final polishing and buffing reveals the full shining beauty of this natural material.

Baan Talae Nok

The most outsiders, the Andaman Sea on southern Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s west coast is a n exotic holiday playground of turquoise seas emerald islands, stunning coral and hot, palm-lined beaches. For the Muslin fishing community of Baan Talae Nok, this sea was their workplace and provider of food, the coastline their home and extra income came from cashew nut orchards not far from the shore. Life was basic but proudly self-sufficientâ&#x20AC;Ś.that was before the tsunami struck on December 26th, 2004. Most of their community was totally destroyed. Their homes, their school, their boats, their trees and most tragically, many village people indiscriminately-husbands, wives, and children. In a trauma about the sea, which had always willingly provided but now has angrily taken away, a group of the women who lost their loved ones have found a new occupation that is giving them new interest as well as healing therapy. Soap-making is helping them to wash away their fears and hopelessness. The handmade soaps reflect the seashore shells and pebbles. They also look inland to the tocks and trees of the tropical mountainside, a safer haven behind the village. The women have added locally found natural ingredients and, partly with the assistance of the Kiriwong craft community in a neighbouring province, to earn much needed income as well as kindling a spirit of renewal.

Preserving their craft heritage is important to this ethnic Skor Karen tribal community in Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. They have built a training centre from bamboo where the young women learn backstrap weaving in handed-down patterns as well as techniques to use materials from the trees around them as dyes. By avoiding dangerous chemicals and protecting nature, a new generation can look forward to a healthy means of supplementary income in their own village. Karen Weavers, determined to pass on their traditions to a new generation, earn support by supplying delegate bags and gift items for a Bangkok conference. A major goal of ThaiCraft is to work with village artisans to preserve their cultural traditions in craft for the benefit of their own and future generations. While this can be achieved by creating a market for ethnic crafts, a certain amount of adaptation is necessary to respond to global market trends and fashion. When a community, such as the Karen tribal group, already recognizes the vital importance of their cultural heritage, adaptation does not mean a loss of their indigenous skills but rather a powerful force to ensure that a new generation can continue to benefit from their identity, as seen from both within and outside their own ethnic surroundings. Doi Tao, a district in Chiang Mai province, is quite remotely situated and, even only a few years ago, the women of the S’kaw Karen tribal villages in the hills knew little of the outside world. Life changed little and they made all their clothing and household textiles from their own grown cotton yarns, which they dyed using the vegetation gathered from nearby forests. The past generation, though, has seen enormous changes. New development has brought roads, electricity, education, public health and materialism. Sudden communication with the world outside

soon endangers many of the cherished traditional values. The challenge is how to preserve the values for the benefit of the young and future generations. The only answer is to meet the new situation face to face and accept change as a benefit rather than a threat. The indigenous fabric-making skills can be turned into a successful local industry with a market directed to outsiders who admire the handmade, ethnic look. Weavings can be sold in fairs, like ThaiCraft, in Bangkok or in Chiang Mai, and even at the village itself (see box below). Please stop by our Karen demonstrators and maybe buy some of there durable and attractive weavings. Is so doing. You will be helping these proud people to preserve their valuable heritage for the future.
