EDITOR’S LETTER
ISSUE 21
Editors Letter As we go to press it is that time in the year for a few late nights glued to the TV watching the British Open. Renowned for its fairness and its challenging layout of two nines running clockwise and counter-clockwise, Muirfield is one of the great Open Championship venues. The pantheon of Muirfield champions is second to none: the likes of Harry Vardon, James Braid, Ted Ray, Walter Hagen, Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els have lifted the Claret Jug in East Lothian. Local pros Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee are representing Thailand, and whoever wins on July 21st will need to be on fine form. Golf in Thailand is very affordable at the moment during the low season. Still from my own experience there still seem a lot of players teeing off even after the tropical downpours have soaked the course. Luckily most fairways and green do drain quickly, although some bunkers do become mini lakes to avoid. One concern during the high season is that the overall cost of playing is getting very expensive, especially if you add a golf cart, caddie fee, transport and food to the green fee. A friend in the states emailed me to say they pay US$27 for 18 holes in Las Vegas, whereas Blue Canyon in Phuket charges US$183. What out Thai golf course managers….don’t price yourself out of the golf vacation market!!! EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS…

GOLF NEWS... Golf Citizen Attracts Thai Golf Clubs at Expo at slow periods for last minute online bookings. Golf Citizen now has many leading Middle East golf courses using their service and has recently started actively promoting their service to Asian golf courses. They are running TV campaigns on Golf Channel Thailand and across the media.
Course Managers Check Out On Line Booking System
Golf Citizen, an online tee-time reservations system that was developed in Dubai took part in the recent Thailand Golf Expo at Queen Sirikit. Launched in 2011, this popular service enables golfers to book and pay for live online tee times and enables golf clubs to increase their revenues. CEO Mohamed Juma Buamaim and his team were at the four day expo to explain and demonstrate to Thai club managers and local golfers the benefits of Golf Citizen. They offer each club a free online system, which not only allows the general public to book live tee times, but also enables the club’s reservation staff to keep track of all their bookings. It has the facility to include shotgun tournaments, VIP bookings plus clubs can even alter the rates offered
Currently several Thai clubs are using the booking service including Banyan Golf Resort, Santiburi Samui, Bangsai Golf Club and Imperial Lake View. Stacey Walton from Banyan was one of the first clubs to sign up and said” We have definitely found that both local and overseas golfers like the convenience of using this simple system to book a round of golf. If we see that in the next 48 hours we have a slack period, it allows us to reduce tee time rates to encourage last minute bookings. In the first 3 months we took an additional 220 booking many from the UAE where Golf Citizen has a strong following.’ Reaction from both visitors at the show and from meeting many club managers, Golf Citizen expect to have at least 20 leading Thai golf courses on board within the next few months.
Mercedes – Benz Support Juniors After seven hotly contested qualifying rounds, 80 Thai golfers will complete alongside top Asian junior golfers from Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and the USA in Asian Masters Final. The Mercedes – Benz Junior Golf Championships has been held for the past eleven years has been won by several Thais who went on to make a career in golf.

Dr Prachin Eamlumnow President of Grand Prix International and one of the main supporters of the tournament said, ‘We have seen a tremendous increase in the standard of play. GOLF NEWS... Pattana Survives Monsoon… A Krabi Golf Family
Sasithornand and Rangsan Keawrat.have decided to really support their golf crazy 17 year old son Tuntikorn, by opening a brand new 24 bay luxury driving range. Driving from nearby the Krabi International Airport, to Krabi town their entrance is on the left just before Tesco Lotus. Monsoon during Pattana Fam trip
Just as 24 VIP’s turned up to visit Pattana Golf Club in Pattaya, Thailand last month, the region’s worst storm hit the course, knocking trees down and partly flooding the greens. Over 500 delegates from 33 countries attended the 2013 Asian Golf Tourism Convention, hosted in Thailand by IAGTO and the Eastern Seaboard Golf Management Association who organized 2,330 rounds of golf over 10 days. These intrepid 24 tour operators from Europe, Asia and North America, were given luncheon while witnessing this monsoon, which devastated the region.
The Palm Driving Range even has accommodation on site with 4 double and 4 twin rooms all with painting of famous local golf courses. With a restaurant, a putting and chipping area too, this is the ideal place to fine tune your game after landing in one of Thailand’s most beautiful spots. Pakasai Golf Course is also close by. Tel: 081 903 7611 or email banchaofa@hotmail.com Son Mum and Dad
After 45 minutes the storm passed, so the club laid on a fleet of golf carts to drive them around one of their 9 hole courses. Then within 30 minutes all tour operators were out enjoying a round of golf reduced to nine holes. Many were very impressed with the speed that the course drained and all agreed that it shows it really is possible to play golf even in the rainy season. What could have turned out to be a PR disaster was saved by quick work by ground staff and the courses excellent drainage. Well done Pattana Golf Club in Pattaya Thailand! 30 minutes after Monsoon back on the course at Pattana GC

TTM 2013 Facts and Figures.
Having come close with three top-three finishes since the Queen’s Cup made its debut on the Asian Tour in 2009, Prayad was seeking his first victory at the Santiburi Samui Country Club and he showed his resolve by closing with a eagle to win with a final round four-under-par 67. Arnond Vongvanij also from Thailand was second signing off with a four-day total of 14-under-par 270. “I’ve come so close to winning here but couldn’t finish the job previously. So obviously this win really means a lot to me,” added Prayad. Sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Thailand PGA, the Queen’s Cup is held in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Sirikit and is one of four tournaments in Thailand to feature on the Asian Tour, which is celebrating its milestone 10th season after establishing itself as a players’ organisation in 2004. Prayad moved to 8th on the Asian Tour order of merit and although Kiradech Aphibarnrat only managed to come in 33rd in Samui he still holds a commanding lead at the top of the list.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Deputy Governor for European and American markets, Mrs Juthaporn Rerngronasa, the inbound tourist figures for 2013 are expected to reach a record 24.14million. Speaking to a large number of travel trade press at a recent media briefing, she explained that promoting Thailand’s 230 golf courses to overseas golf vacationers played a big part in TAT’s future promotions. The largest group visiting Thailand is now China, who just in the period from January to April this year had 1.53million arrivals, up a staggering 92% on the previous period in 2012. This was partly due to the Chinese New Year exodus and a popular Chinese movie called Lost in Thailand. The largest groups to visit Thailand in 2012 were 2.78 million from China (up 61.91%) Malaysia at 2.55 million, Japan 1.37 million, Russia at 1.31 million (up 24.89%), S Korea at 1.15 million and India at 1.01 (up 10.73%). Tourist arrivals in 2012 totaled 22.3 million and TAT are predicting 24.14 million tourists to visit in 2013 worth over US$37.05 million. This will definitely put a big smile on the TAT and the Land of Smile’s economy. One long term concern for the Thai golf industry, will be if the Chinese start to take golf as seriously as the Japanese and Koreans, we may find booking a tee times at some of the top Thai courses a big problem. www.thaigolf-news.com

Interview with Paul McGinley, the new European Ryder Cup Captain.
Paul McKinley with Thai Golf News Editor
Thai Golf News: Have you played here in Thailand before? Paul McGinley: I have actually played a lot of courses here in Thailand. In fact my very first European tour co sanctioned event was back in 1992 here in Bangkok, and ever since I have enjoyed coming back here on a regular basis.
TGN: Many players we spoke to like to come to play here in the warm weather in January before flying to play in Abu Dhabi.
TGN: As a member of the Royal Trophy players committee, do you feel that this tournament may return to Thailand?
PM: Yes I agree, but unfortunately Abu Dhabi moved their dates forward which is why we had to play the Royal Trophy in December.
PM: I very much hope so. I played a couple of times myself when Seve Ballesteros was captain. The crowds were always good and although initially the Asian team was not that strong, they have got stronger and are now winning that tournament. I would love to see it grow and Amata Springs was a wonderful venue for it. TGN: It seems to make sense that you have this tournament in January, before the Middle East swing. Last year you changed the dates to December, do you think that had a big effect on attracting players? 12
PM: The problem is the player’s schedules, and we felt we had more chance to attract a better quality field in December, than we had in January. It is not an easy task to fit into the international schedules.

TGN: I was recently watching on TV you and Padraig Harrington playing in the Ryder Cup at the Belfry. Do you think he might grab a place in your Ryder Cup team next time? PM: Yes Padraig is a top 50 player in the world and anyone of that level is certainly strong enough to play a Ryder Cup, and I would be delighted if he made the team. TGN: Now on tour we have some very tall and long hitters such as Chris Wood and Nicholas Colestarts. Being fairly short, has this had an effect on your game over the years? PM: Not really, Bob Torrance has been my coach since I turned pro, and because of my height he has got me to swing in a www.thaigolf-news.com
rotational way around myself rather than up and down. I swing my club a little bit like Ben Hogan, around my body and use it rotational. For a guy who is not very tall it’s a good way of swinging. TGN: Are you doing a lot of TV work at the moment? PM: Yes I will probably do 4-5 events this year and next year for Sky Sports. I did the Race to Dubai last year and I really enjoyed that experience as it gave me a great insight into the players watching them over four days. It’s also a great way for me to gather information about the players for my future Ryder Cup selections. TGN: Asian players are doing very well on several tours at the moment. Do you see the potential of organizing a tournament for Asia, Europe and the States together? PM: Yes that could happen, and there are several ideas bouncing around. I personally like the idea of the Royal Trophy as the American play against the rest of the world in the Presidents Cup and I think it’s great for us to have an outlet like the Royal Trophy. I know personally from speaking to Seve that he was very passionate about and I would love to see that legacy going forward. TGN: Well do you see the likelihood of the women and then men playing together one day?
Asian’s No 1 with the Ryder Cup Captain
www.thaigolf-news.com
PM: I know they tried something similar down in Australia recently and it was a great success, with some very big crowds, so I would be all in favour of it. A bit like the tennis with the men’s and ladies tournaments running concurrently, especially if they have a 36 hole resort as they had in Australia.

Course report…Valley Course at Laem Chabang
Par 3 hole 5
For some reason every time I have been to Laem Chabang Country Club, their Valley course was either fully booked or closed because of flooding. Well at last I managed to try my luck at what some regard as the best nine holes at the club, and I must say it was definitely worth the wait. A beautiful but challenging course has been created by Jack Nicklaus, offering a par 36 nine holes at 3,619 yards from the black tees to 3,009 yards from the red tees.
Club’s Lodge Hotel
You start your round by teeing off from a raised tee box, looking down the valley towards a green surrounded by grassy slopes. A good drive here will give you the chance to hit the green in two, as it seems quite a long par 4. The second and longest hole (538 yards) on the course has water everywhere, so accuracy is important. Visually it looks harmless, but beware of the bunker on the right guarding the green. Hole 3 is another par 4 where your second shot needs to carry a lake onto a green with a bunker on the left. Second hardest hole according to Mr Nicklaus!
hole 9 and Club house www.thaigolf-news.com
The hardest hole however and according to my caddie the club’s handicap 1 over all 27 holes at the club, is the par 4, 454 yard number 4. It seems fairly tame but you need to ISSUE ISSUE twenty twenty one • THAI • THAI GOLF GOLF NEWS • 15•
Course report… Valley Course at Laem Chabang avoid bunkers in the middle of the fairway, and your second shot has to carry a lake before avoiding the bunkers again on the right of the sloping green. Visually and perhaps the most photogenic hole in Pattaya, is the par 3 number 5, that seems to have more bunkers than grass. Apparently at 205 yards many golfers use a 3 wood here or even a driver. Hole 7 also has a lot of sand traps so you need to stay left to get a clean second onto a raised green. The second par 3, number 8 gives you the pleasure of teeing off over the lake onto a fairly well guarded green with a large bunker running across most of the front by the lake and another three bunkers around the back.
Opening par 4
Hole nine is all uphill towards the club house and you need a good drive to make it to the green. The Valley is the longest nine holes at the club. Overall a most spectacular nine holes which definitely rewards those willing to risk taking on the greens without laying up on your second shot. Being 27 holes you can combine this course with the Mountain course or as I did start late and carry on playing the floodlit Lakes course afterwards. The facilities’ at Laem Chabang are first class and do try to stay overnight at their Lodge Hotel and enjoy the live entertainment in their excellent restaurant.

Course report... Bangpakong Riverside
Bangpakong Riverside Country Club
Bangpakong Riverside Country Club was established in 1990 as the first golf course in Chacheongsao province areas alongside Bangpakong Rivers. Design by a well-known Thai golf course designer of that era Mr. Chird Boonyaratavej, it is an 18 hole, par 72 golf course set out in parkland type golf Course, with wide fairways and long distance holes, surrounded by numerous palm trees, flower beds, lakes and dramatic bunkers. The course ranges from 5,470 to 7,140 yards in length. While it may appear easy on first impressions, it can turn into a beast once you encounter a prevailing wind. Now 20 years have passed and Bangpakong Riverside Country Club has still kept its original design layout as its founder originally intended. “A golf course that is challenging but not yet too difficult, so that everyone can enjoy whatever their handicap.” Their signature hole, Hole 4 par 3 210 yards is a challenging par 3 with a lake along the leftside making the hole appear like a crescent moon when seen from the tee box. The green is guard by three large bunkers on the left. An exciting challenge! Number 9 is the longest on the course at 560 yards, with water along the left and a few strategically placed bunkers.

Golf Destination Report The 18th is their handicap number one, a par 5 with two dog legs and quite a lot of lakes and creeks to contend with, before reaching a large raised green beside the club house. The course offers the chance to get to low figures if your second shots can reach the greens. Cool winds here make it a pleasant course for a round during the hot summer months!
Finishing hole
The club has a large restaurant on the first floor and a golf academy, putting and driving range plus swimming pool. Lock rooms are a bit old but functional and there is a small pro shop on the ground floor. Bangpakong Riverside Country Club is located along the Bangpakong River, close to the Bangna – Trad Highway and is around one hour from Bangkok or Pattaya. It is advisable to keep your taxi and pay the waiting time otherwise the club has to book a taxi from Bangkok. Ideal for a round of golf in the hot months and it offers reasonable rates on weekdays. TGN: You are currently organizing the 10th Chairman’s Cup. What is the idea behind this tournament, who can enter and what is the top prize?
Eastern Star Par 3
PR: The idea behind The 10th Chairman’s Cup is to have an activity during low season from April to October. Golfers during low season are about 40%, so we encourage all golfers to play in the tournament at Eastern Star. When they apply to the tournament, some of golfers will come to practice here which can increase number of golfers during the low season. This year, the top prize is three days golf package playing at Alpine Golf Resort in Chiangmai. TGN: Last year one of your caddies won the Caddy Championship. How many caddies now play regularly? PR: Khun Sud Budsri, an Eastern Star Caddy, won the Caddy Championship last year. We have 15 caddies who play regularly in Eastern Star, normally after 3pm every day when tee time is available. When caddy can play golf, they understand the golf game better, and it helps them to understand what players want from their caddy. Grand Prix Opens Softly… After successful promotions at the Bangkok International Motor Show and last month’s Thailand Golf Expo, the Grand Prix Golf Club in Kanchaburi opened its doors to players in April. Visitors to both exhibitions were able to purchase discounted vouchers to play a round during the club’s soft opening, and over 1,500 took up the offer. Vice President Pisal said, ‘ Although we are a few months away from having our clubhouse ready, the course has been finished for some months, so we felt it would be helpful for our staff to welcome a select number of golfers to test their skills on our challenging 18 holes.” When we visited the course on a recent Friday, over 70 players were experiencing the course for the first time. We chatted to several groups who were enjoying their day out and were all unanimous in agreeing that Grand Prix Golf Club would become a top Asian course in the future. Golf for Insomniacs…
Voted one of the top 5 must-play golf courses in Thailand, this Nick Faldo designed 18 hole course is only 30 minutes from central Bangkok, and runs parallel to the runway of the new international airport, Suvarnabhumi International Airport. A substantial amount of earth moving was done when building the course to create good elevation changes and hillside fairways, both of which are rarely seen at other Bangkok golf courses. Fairways to greens are using Bermuda grass throughout. Offering 18 holes of night golf in a magical setting amidst lakes and trees, the course provides a very high-quality lighting installation to ensure clear visibility over the entire course. One of the best night courses around. This is a fairly short par 72, 6,964 yards course covering 160 acres consisting of an 18-hole layout with man-made lakes and landscaped gardens that add to the beauty and difficulty throughout the course. Playing at night, Faldo’s clever use of grassy mounds and pothole bunkers are beautifully exaggerated by the shadows created by the floodlights. Their par 4 signature hole, the sixteenth with its curvy white sand bunkers along the lake from tee-off to putting green is a challenge with four bunkers standing on the right at 150 yards. Visitors will find a golfing paradise oasis in the middle of this well-known busiest city in the world. This luxurious destination consists of an 18 hole championship golf course, restaurants and bars, fitness, game room and a luxury on site residence offering short and long term packages. Night golf opening days are Tuesdays to Sundays, as night golf is closed on Mondays. Can get busy so best advised to book ahead. With over 23 great golf courses all within an hour’s drive of Pattaya it is no wonder that international visitors have been taking their golf vacations in this region. According to the Eastern Seaboard Golf Management Association over 500,000 rounds were booked in the past 12 months from tourists. With many locals and expats living in surrounding cities such as Bangkok or Hua Hin, a trip to Pattaya for a few rounds of golf is also very popular, especially in the low season, when the courses are not so busy and the accommodation is reasonable as well. Recently we checked out two hotels which offer excellent value, while being a bit more off beat and fun than your average luxury branded accommodation. The Dusit D2 baraquda pattaya is a 5 star boutique style hotel located on 2nd road close to all the action of beach road, Central Festival shopping centre and walking street. Phuket News
So here we are – the start of another wet season, so how do we cope? Here are a few tips I have developed over the years of playing in Thailand’s monsoon season. Firstly buy a pair of (predominately) black shoes – they show the mud and grass up much less! Also keep two towels on the bag, a dark coloured one for cleaning clubs and a white one for your hands, arms and face. You will be surprised at how much you sweat. Get a good umbrella and be patient – it rarely rains for more than 45 minutes. During this time just get holed up in a drinks hut and relax. You can either get to know your caddie and practice your Thai language skills, or grab a cold Heineken or remind your best friend about his 3 putt on the 12thhole. 5555 This time of year can be a funny time to play golf as on the 3rd hole you will have your umbrella up to shade you from the sun, then on the 6th hole it will be to keep you dry! However, the majority of summer rain in Phuket falls at night, after the temperature has steadily built up during the day. So the courses will be damp in the morning and the early sunshine helps to evaporate the standing water. This results in the most humid part of the day being between 11am and 1pm. During this time it is HOT, HOT, HOT and very humid. If you tee off 30

at around 11am, you will be starting to get tired, just as the temperature rises and the humidity really saps you, often resulting in poor shot selection and bad scores towards the end of the round. If due to scheduling you are forced to tee off around this time, ensure you drink plenty of water and rehydrate with extra body salts; sachets can be bought for as little as Baht7 at one of the many pharmacies in the land of smiles. A better option is to tee off around 2.30pm, whilst it is still quite warm – when you are fresh, excited about the round and full of energy. As you start to tire after 2-3 hours the weather, well, it becomes perfect. As the sun goes down and the temperature drops you are often in the shade of palm trees that line many courses and there is far less humidity, resulting in excellent playing conditions. Honestly – there is nowhere else I would rather be between 4.30pm and 6.30pm than on a Phuket golf course. It is a happy coincidence that when your round is over - this is the time of day that the beer tastes its best! (Don’t forget to take in lots of water though, particularly if you do plan to indulge in a few beers afterwards!) Throughout Thailand there are great deals to be had in the summer season, the courses are virtually empty, so get out and play LOTS of golf, get some practice in and get your handicap down. Check out our website www.thaigolf-news. com for some special green fee discounts at several courses around Thailand including several on Phuket Island.
The Hua Hin Golf Society… With over 223 members this friendly golf society down by the seaside seems to be very active. Of course next to Pattaya and Bangkok, Hua Hin with its eleven courses is a golfer’s paradise, especially with the Hua Hin Golf Festival taking place in August and September. The Society’s meeting place is called Berny’s Inn, 33/9 Hua Hin Bazaar, Hua Hin, and they normally aim to play on Tuesdays and Fridays. Members are welcome to bring their friends to the Society’s games as their guests. Members are reminded that guests must be known to them as the member signing in a guest(s) takes full responsibility for them. They do not accommodate walk-ins, visitors, tourists etc. The member will play in the same group as their guest(s), and a maximum of two guests per member is allowed subject to availability of tee-times. Guests will not be entitled to receive our discounted green fee rates. They recently organized a ‘gentlemen’s only’ trip to Pattaya and will be travelling away again later in the year. Their July fixtures posted on their website for July were as follows. Not only do members gain from discounted golf but even local charities benefit…last year they raised over Baht304, 181 for the Bright Dawn Charity. www.huahingolfsociety.com
Next PAGS golf series… The Pattaya Amateur Golf Series otherwise known as PAGS will hold their July event at the Treasure Hill Golf and Country Club on Wednesday July 31st. This 4 year old group of golf fanatics plays at a selection of local Pattaya courses on the last Wednesday of the month with a stableford format. Simple one fee and you get a round of golf including green fee, caddy fee and a BBQ all for around Baht1, 600. Normally they attract up to 90 -120 players depending on the season. They offer a points system with the winner at the end of year going on a free 5 star golf trip. This year rumored to be to a top Hua Hin course. The Hau Hin Golf Festival 2013 If you mention a famous resort town in Thailand, everyone will say it must be the historical city of Hua Hin, a firm favorite and very popular over the hundred years with local Thai people and foreigners. It is also the home of one of Thailand’s most popular golf events, The Hau Hin Golf Festival. Hua Hin district is in the Prachuap Khiri Khan province near Cha-Am Phetchaburi Province. There are four famous Palaces, Khao Wang, Wang Ban Peurn both in Phetchaburi Province, and Maruegadayavan Palace (King Rama 6th) and the Klai Kangwon Palace which is the residence of the present Majesty the Queen. Hua Hin beach and its neighbor Cha-Am province have very long stretches of beach, while the town of Hua Hin is 15 minutes away. Hua Hin is a charming town, with many attractions keeping with the Thai lifestyle including the current main market called Plearnwan, a floating market, Chic Qaeda vineyards and wineries, the Pattrawadee Theater for modern art, and the Hua Hin Market, a great place for seafood. Perhaps one of the most popular attractions though has to be the old train station near Hua Hin night market, which is still operating today.
Royal Hua Hin Golf Club
Hua Hin is also well known as have the first 18-hole golf course in the country, called the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course. Today the region can boast over 10 top courses including the latest to open called Seapine Golf Course owned by the Thai Army. Every year for the past 12 years they have held the popular Hua Hin Golf Festival, between August and September. During what effectively is the low season a large number of local courses reduce their green fees and for their 2013 Festival all green fees are charged at Baht999. They also organize a total of the nine competitive tournaments with the final this year to be hosted by Imperial Lakeview Golf Course. The competitions are being held every Sunday, during the two month long Hua Hin Golf Festival.
Palm Hill
All of these golf courses are unique, distinctive and different as follows: Royal Hua Hin Golf Course. Across fields and up to towards the mountain and then back down to the town and adjacent to the station, it’s a classic old style course built by Scotsman who was working on the railroads. Thailand’s first golf course, this 18-hole course offers shady trees and tricky bunkers, even a view of the golden pagoda temple of Hua Hin. 36
