4. ANCIENT EGYPT: SOCIETY AND ECONOMY SOCIETY -It

was a hierarchical society:

- The pharaoh had an absolute political,military and religious authority. - the ruling elite, apart from the nobility, included: - Priests: they were in charge of worshipping the gods. - Scribes: worked for the government and knew how to read and write. - Officials: They ruled the army - Governors: They ruled the provinces

- Members of free society : merchants, soldiers, artisans and farmers. - Women had more rights than in other ancient civilisations. They could own property. - Slaves: they worked in the mines, domestic service or agriculture.

IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE: - They grew cereals to make bread and beer. - They also grew vines, oilves, vegetables and flax to make clohes. - water from the Nile was distributed through canals, dams and irrigation systems. 2. LIVESTOCK: - They kept cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and donkeys. 3. CRAFTS: - They produced textiles, pottery and jewellery in small workshops. - They used papyrus to creae writing pper 4. TRADE: - Local products were exchanged along the Nile. - They exported cereals, pottery and papyrus to Mesopotamia and Greece. - They imported metals and luxury goods.
