5. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTH’S CLIMATE HOT CLIMATES

-

Are found between th Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Average temperatures are high There isn’t winter Two types: 1. EQUATORIAL: - Temperatures are very high (over 25º C) - Annual temperature range is only 3º C - Abundant rainfall all year round (1,500 mm) 2. TROPICAL: - Temperaturesare high - Annual temperature range may be 10º C. - Abundant rainfall (1,500 mm) but it falls during the rainy season.

DRY CLIMATES The main characteristic is the lack of precipitation. Two types: 1. HOT DESERT: - Temperatures are high - Annual temperature range may be 10º C - There is a big difference between temperatures at night and durng the day. - Precipitation is scarce (less than 300 mm annually) - When there is precipitation, i falls suddenly and evaporates rapidly. 2. STEPPE: - Precipitation is scarce (less han 300 mm annually) - there is a big diffeence between temperatures at night and during the day. - Temperatures are less than 5º C in winter.

5. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTH’S CLIMATE TEMPERATE CLIMATES

-

They have four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. There are 3 main types: 1. CONTINENTAL: - It is characteristical of inland continental areas ,especially in Northern Hemisphere - There is marked contrast between : - warm and rainy summers - dry and cold winters. - Precipitation is between 300 – 1,000 mm annually. 2. MEDITERRANEAN: - Summers are hot and dry - Winters are mild. - Average temperatures are between 12 C – 18º C. - Precipitation falls in spring and autumn - Precipitation is irregular (between 300 – 800 mm annually) 3. OCEANIC: - It is very influenced by the sea - Temperatures are mild - Precipitation is regular and abundant (1,000 mm annually).

5. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTH’S CLIMATE -

COLD CLIMATES These are found in latitudes that are far from the Equator and in mountainous areas. Two types: 1. MOUNTAIN CLIMATE: - in the mountain ranges (The Himalayas, Andes, Alps). - Temperatures are low and drop with altitude. - Precipitation increases at higher altitudes 2. POLAR CLIMATES: - They are near the poles - There is no summer - Temperatures are always very low (never higher than 5º C) and may fall to – 50 C. - Precipitation is scarce nd falls as snow.
