In Castilla: - A fine literature was created on the Iberian Peninsula in the Late Middle Ages. - Most writers were connected to the royal court or to the Church. - Writers: - Don Juan Manuel wrote a collection of stories and fables called El Conde Lucanor. - Juan Ruiz, archpriest of Hita, wrote a satirical work, Libro del Buen Amor.

In Arag贸n: - Humanist ideas reached the Crown of Arag贸n from across the Mediterranean. - There was a strong Italian influence after Naples became part of the Aragonese Empire.

The earliest universities, such Salamanca, flourished in Castilla in the 13 th century. In the 14 th century : Santiago, Sevilla and Alcal谩 de Henares. In the Crown of Arag贸n, the earliest was the university of Lleida (at the beginning of 14 th century) followed by Barcelona and Valencia.
4. CULTURE AND ART IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE - In Castilla: - There were built magnificent Gothic cathedrals in León, Burgos or Toledo. - The more elaborate Gothic flamboyant style wa used in Sevilla cathedral. - There were built impressive palaces and military architecture, such as the castles of Peñafiel, the Alcazar of Segovia and so on.
- In the Crown of Aragón: - Religious buildings were created, like Santa María del Mar (Barcelona) and the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. - But in Aragón was used an important civic architecture, which was the reflect the commercial expansion and the growth of the cities.: Palaces, city councils, shipyards and commercial exchanges were built.
4. CULTURE AND ART IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES GOTHIC PAINTING AND SCULPTURE
- The art of Flanders and Italy had an important influence on pinting and became more naturalistic. - Most painting was on wood. - Leading painters: Martorell and BartolomÊ Bermejo. - Fine artwork was used to decorate manuscripts, like king Alfonso X of Castilla’s Cantigas. - In sculpture, elaborate royal tombs were built.(Monastery of Miraflores in Burgos) - Sculpture remained a significant decorative feature of cathedrals.
