2. OCEANIC WATERS OCEANS AND SEAS -
The Earth is called the blue planet because of oceans and seas cover 71% of its surface. OCEANS: - are large bodies of saltwater that separates the continents. - they cover a large proportion of the Earth’s surface ( much more in Southern Hemisphere). SEAS: - are oceanic waters that are close to continents. - They aren’t as deep as oceans. - -types: 1- some of them are parts of an ocean (Caribbean Sea, Cantabrian Sea). 2. Other of them are connected to oceans through straits (Mediterranean Sea) 3. Some large boies of water are really inland saltwater lakes (Caspian Sea). They are separated from the oceans.
2. OCEANIC WATERS WAVES, TIDES, CURRENTS -
The water of he oceans and seas is in continual movement. There are three ipes of movement - 1. WAVES: - are the circular movement on the surface of oceans. - Are caused y winds. - 2. TIDES: - are the daily rise and fall of sea levels. - are caused by the gravitational influence of the Moon and the Sun. - HIGH TIDES:when sea levels rise. - LOW TIDES: when sea levels fall. - 3. CURRENTS: - are large masses of water that move across the oceans - surface currents are caused by winds. - Deep currents are caused by differences in temperature, salinity and density. - Types: - COLD CURRENTS: - begin in polar regions - move towards tropical regions - cool the coastal areas that they pass. - WARM CURRENTS: - begin in warm regions - move west until they reach a continent, then, they change direction.
