CREATIVE COMMISSIONS A Suite of River Projects Curated by the Cultureship This year Thames Festival is thrilled to be working with collaborative artists and directors of the Cultureship, Zatorski + Zatorski, to produce a suite of fine art projects and events that celebrate the history, vessels, sounds and the people of the Thames. Artists include Richard Wilson (UK), Zatorski + Zatorski (UK), Layla Curtis (UK), Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen (Denmark), Hew Locke (UK), and Doug Fishbone (USA).
1513: A Ships’ Opera by Richard Wilson and Zatorski + Zatorski

A Cultureship project commissioned by the Thames Festival Trust A spectacular water-borne performance for the River Thames by twice Turner Prize-nominated sculptor and sound-maker Richard Wilson and artists Zatorski + Zatorski. The first act begins at sea with a lone steam tug, which meets historic ships mustered at Trinity Buoy Wharf, home of London’s last lighthouse, where the second exciting act is performed at 6:40pm. 1513 culminates in a breath-taking light and sound display at Tower Bridge, where an armada of historic vessels from the age of sail and steam perform a live, moving, operatic concerto of ships’ steam whistles, bells, horns, hooters, sirens and cannon as the not-to-be-missed centrepiece of the 2013 Thames Festival. Saturday 14 September Performance route: River Thames from the mouth of the Thames Estuary to the Pool of London Final performance at the Pool of London between Tower Bridge and London Bridge, 7.45pm – 8.30pm

Welcome! This year, the Thames Festival undergoes an exciting transformation. It is extending from a concentrated weekend of riverside animations to a season of bespoke events that spans ten days. It is initiating more activities both upriver and downriver from the area it has historically occupied between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge. There is an evolution in its character too, as the festival goes back to source and becomes more focused on the Thames itself and on water-related issues.

A large-scale sculptural installation for All Hallows by the Tower - the mariners’ church. Hew Locke’s whimsical boat festooned with garlands of flowers and foliage explores the spiritual and metaphysical symbolism of the ship and sea travel: an evocation of the final funerary journey.
Multiple self-contained vignettes weave together fragments and traces of the people and places that define the character of the Thames. Internationally renowned video artist Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen’s latest work provides viewers with the opportunity to engage with the people that use and inhabit the river, the watermen and lightermen families who know it intimately, and who have plied their trade along it for generations.

Rivers of the World links over 2,000 young people around the world each year through a focus on a common theme: their river. This year, students from secondary schools in London, UAE, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Pakistan have shared their river research, learned about each others’ cultures and worked with local artists to create magnificent large-scale artworks. Artists of the Pageant

Bringing together, for the very first time, over fifty works of art inspired by the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. On pageant day, many of the featured artists were based at Millennium Bridge and on the terraces of City of London School for Boys. Most of the works are for sale.
After every art college degree show a tide of artistic energy pours out into the city. London’s Mississippi-style paddle steamer, The Dixie Queen, is converted into a floating gallery to showcase the hopes and dreams of some of the best new artists of 2013. Sing for Water Led by Roxane Smith and Michael Harper, a rousing 800 person concert comprising choirs from all over the UK will sing together to raise money and awareness for WaterAid. This year funds raised will go to projects in Ghana where life-saving work will bring access to safe water to many villages and thousands of people.

Rounding off the afternoon, all woman pop choir Lips present a feel good extravaganza with a repertoire that includes everything from 50’s girl-pop to garage and disco.

A fire made from Thames driftwood is extinguished by the incoming tide. In the fire are pots made from Thames clay. Pots have been fired this way for 6,000 years in the UK. See finds from the foreshore and have your questions answered by leading archaeologist Dr Fiona Haughey. Join a free archaeological walk along the river at 12pm. Saturday 14 September, 12.30pm – 6pm

Free activities all weekend include origami workshops led by Sesames and clay moulding with Whale of a Time. The barge-driving races re-enact the way that watermen manouvered their barges on the Thames in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Cheer on modern-day watermen and lightermen as they battle it out in the Steve Faldo Memorial Barge Drive, while friends, family and newcomers compete in the Dave Pope Challenge. Sunday 15 September

From the serene source of the River Thames deep in the Gloucestershire hills, to the hustle bustle of central London and Tower Bridge, a journey with a difference will take place this September. Walkers, swimmers, rowers and sailors will cover the entire length of the river in short and long relay stretches.
If you love classic vessels, St Katharine Docks is the place to be as boats including Gloriana – the Queen’s rowbarge, the Massey Shaw and a selection of Dunkirk Little Ships are open for guided tours. There’s also gourmet food from the St Katharine Docks Good Food Market, Sea Cadet displays and more.
