100+ events celebrating london’s River 1
welcome!
L
ast year, 8.5 million people travelled on the river and we want that number to increase to 12 million by 2020. Festivals like Totally Thames are a fantastic way to get people delving deeper into the significance of our great river. Just think what events it’s been the backdrop to and the people it’s inspired over the centuries. As Kipling said, it’s ‘where your history books begin’.

Like London, the river refuses to stay still. Along the banks, new housing developments are sprouting up in places like Battersea and Greenwich. We’re also working on a new artistic lighting scheme to enhance our famous bridges. The Thames may be part of our history, but it is also very much part of our future. As such, it remains a constant draw for Londoners and tourists alike. So immerse yourself in Totally Thames, which will be one of the cultural highlights of 2014. Boris Johnson Mayor of London

he Arts Council is proud to support the Thames Festival Trust as it enters a new and exciting era in its development. Under the refreshed Totally Thames banner, the Trust is now able to encourage and facilitate collaboration between artists, arts organisations and businesses along the whole stretch of the Thames in London. It has taken an innovative and bold step that gives audiences greater opportunity to engage with the River Thames through arts, events and interventions, and build greater understanding of this iconic London landscape.

This year we are particularly excited by the UK debut by Florentijn Hofman, a surprising and intriguing river installation that celebrates the prehistory of the Thames; and the immense installation from Carabosse, a fire garden spectacular – the biggest ever seen in the UK – that will see a final burning salute to one of London’s most iconic buildings, Battersea Power Station. O
n behalf of the Thames Festival Trustees, welcome to the first ever Totally Thames. Our aim is simple – to make this the largest riverrelated celebration anywhere in the world – and by 2016 we hope to achieve that.

We would not have got here without help from the GLA which has funded our work since 2000 and has done so much to encourage us; from the Arts Council for their ongoing grant for our core team and their additional support for events this year; and from London First which readily backed the idea of Totally Thames and has committed significant funding for the next three years. Thanks as well to London & Partners which has helped promote Totally Thames to visitors and Londoners, and to the 17 riparian boroughs which have all embraced the idea. And thanks from me to Adrian Evans and the dedicated small team which has made all this happen. What we need next year is more backing from businesses with a real interest in the river. And right now we need your help. Tell us what you think of the events being held. Give us your ideas for 2015. And have fun!

otally Thames is the biggest celebration yet of our magnificent river. Throughout the month of September there’s arts and music, regattas and river races, archaeology and exploration, with plenty for children and families to see and do. From the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival to the Richmond Riverside Festival and beyond, there are over 100 events happening in all 17 boroughs along its banks. I warmly thank all of our partners in helping to make this very first Totally Thames, the ultimate Thames side celebration. Come down to the river and be inspired and delighted!

florentijn hofman commission Something large, very large is coming to the Thames this September! Renowned Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s first UK commission is sure to delight and certain to surprise. Rubber Duck, Florentijn Hofman, Kaohsiung (TW), 2013
Tuesday 2 – sunday 28 September Created especially for Totally Thames, an intriguing installation by Florentijn Hofman will grace the River Thames. The Dutch artist has become worldrenowned for his giant, playful installations and in particular, his sevenstorey high Rubber Duck, which has been sited on the waterways of many major cities across the globe. Sure to delight and certain to surprise, the new commission, his first in the UK, will be unveiled at Nine Elms on the South Bank on Tuesday 2 September. Until then, the design is top secret, but we can reveal that its inspiration is taken from what used to lurk in the muddy warm waters of the River Thames over 100,000 years ago. Nine Elms on the South Bank, River Thames at Riverside Gardens, Nine Elms Lane, Vauxhall, SW8 2DU Stepped access to the foreshore is available for three hours a day at low tide. Fire Garden by Carabosse This is fire alchemy at its very best: the smell of wax, the hiss of steam, and the heat and glow of the multiple fires acknowledging and celebrating this iconic site’s gritty, smoke belching industrial past. Fire Garden, Carabosse, 2009. Photo: Angell
Friday 5 & Saturday 6 September 2 Battersea Power Station. Enter from the Riverside Walkway, Chelsea Bridge Check totallythames.org for transport information 6.30pm – 10.30pm
The Fire Garden is a free but ticketed event. We expect the event to be popular so tickets will be issued via a free public ballot (details at: totallythames.org). Entries can be made from Tues 12 – Wed 27 August. Winners will be picked at random and notified by email. Upon exiting the site, audience members will be asked to make a donation to support the creation of new work for Totally Thames in 2015. £5 per person recommended minimum. Please give generously!
The Fire Garden is a burning, artistic tribute, delivered on a monumental scale, to Battersea Power Station before it is closed for redevelopment. This is fire alchemy at its very best: the smell of wax, the hiss of steam, and the heat and glow of the multiple fires acknowledging and celebrating this iconic site’s gritty, smoke belching, industrial past. There are globes of fire, festoons made up of flame pots and a vast candlelit chandelier suspended overhead from a crane. Musicians play a mix of old style Parisian music with moody improvised sounds. The commission is only possible thanks to the support of public funding by the National Lottery through the Arts Council’s Exceptional award programme, extraordinary funds from the Mayor of London and sponsorship from Battersea Power Station Development Company.

the thames senseation The award-winning House of Gastrophonic and the Northbank BID present a multi-sensory feast of a festival for all the family to enjoy! Design by Daniel Syrett
Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 September During Totally Thames, the award-winning House of Gastrophonic delivers a spectacular family festival like no other. The Thames SENSEation, presented by the Northbank BID, is a world-first, multi-sensory extravaganza. Immerse yourself in the sights, aromas, tastes, textures and sounds of London’s Elizabethan, Victorian and mid-20th century past, and discover the city’s powerful sensory heritage. To this day, many of London’s street names reflect the city’s taste for the sensorily evocative - Bread Street, Corn Hill, Saffron Hill, Camomile Street, Leather Lane, and Silk Street, to name a few. The River Thames has been the gateway through which new food, perfumes and fabric have arrived to enrich and revolutionise the lives of Londoners for centuries. Be transported by Elizabethan spices and Victorian teas, listen to the experts in bygone cuisine, and feel your way through London at a state-of-the-art exhibition of 3D printed landmarks. •
Seven new aircraft stands
•
A new parallel taxi lane to make better use of the existing runway
You can fly to more than 40 destinations from London City and get to and from your plane quicker than at any other airport. On departure it takes less than 20 minutes to get from the door to the lounge, and on arrival, just 15 minutes from tarmac to train.
•

•
A new arrivals terminal
•

Rivers of the World
L
ed by Shona Watt and a group of inspirational artists in each partner country, Rivers of the World is Thames Festival Trust’s flagship art and education project delivered in partnership with the British Council. It provides opportunities and resources for teachers and students to learn about their local river and to compare this to other rivers in cities around the world. The students follow up their river study with the creation of huge artworks for public display beside their own river and in all partner cities. Now in its ninth year, this extraordinary project has been welcomed in twenty countries around the world. This year sees the 500th artwork created as part of Rivers of the World. The work on display is by young people from London (UK), New Orleans (USA), Taipei (Taiwan) and Jhelum (Pakistan) reflecting on the River Thames, the Mississippi, the Tamsui and the Jhelum.

lost river walks
T
he majority of London’s lost rivers were culverted (covered over) and turned into sewers in an extraordinary feat of Victorian engineering. Londoners had been using the city’s waterways for the disposal of human, household and industrial waste for centuries, but the rapid increase in population during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had brought with it an increase in water-related pollution and disease. The final straw was the “Great Stink” during the hot summer of 1858, when Parliament had to relocate due to the overwhelming smell of raw sewage. The rivers were then incorporated into a system of interconnecting pipes to divert most of the city’s waste away from the Thames. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the hidden waterways of London is not that they have disappeared from the surface, but that there are so many of them. Writing about lost rivers made me see London from an entirely new perspective; the city is riddled with watery relics and clues. Be it the name of an area (Muswell Hill), a tube station (Stamford Brook), a pub (The Falcon near Clapham Junction), a road (Conduit Street), a dip in the landscape or just the sight of a mysterious lamppost, the evidence is abundant if you know what you’re looking for. Dazzle Ship London by Tobias Rehberger
Throughout September and beyond FREE, the best views of the work are from the South Bank or Blackfriars Bridge German artist Tobias Rehberger has created a contemporary dazzle design for HMS President (1918) as part of 14-18 NOW, WW1 Centenary Art Commission. This temporary art work takes as its inspiration a style of optical distortion used extensively during the First World War called ‘dazzle painting’. Devised by British artist Norman Wilkinson and supervised by vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth, the camouflage technique incorporated bold shapes and strong contrasts, with an aim to confuse rather than conceal. The HMS President (1918) is one of three surviving WW1 warships. It was ‘dazzled’ on its launch in 1918, under its original name HMS Saxifrage. The ‘dazzle’ technique has been a recurring theme in Tobias Rehberger’s work. In 2009 he was awarded the Golden Lion Award at the 53rd International Venice Biennale for a café he created that was decorated using the principle of dazzle pattern.
14-18 NOW is a major cultural programme taking place across the UK to mark the centenary of the First World War – inviting contemporary artists from the UK and around the world to explore the resonance of the First World War today.

G
reenwich Peninsula is transforming. At over 300 acres, this former gasworks is one of the largest regeneration schemes in London. The land, owned by the Mayor of London, is being developed by Knight Dragon to create a new neighbourhood, with over 10,000 homes to meet a variety of housing needs, including plenty of affordable housing, as well as offices, schools, shops and community facilities.
These homes will be built alongside the Peninsula’s new and historic attractions. The O2 Arena is now the world’s most successful music venue, with plans to add high quality shops to its rich offer of restaurants, bars and entertainment. To the west of the O2, a new 400 bedroom hotel is being built which, when finished in late 2015, will house London’s largest ballroom. Throughout the peninsula, high quality open and green space is taking shape. The tree-lined Central Park will be supplemented by smaller gardens, public squares, play areas, a landscaped river walkway along the Thames and attractions designed to bring the water’s edge to life. The peninsula is also the southernmost point of The Line, the exciting new sculpture trail running from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park through Royal Docks and onto Greenwich. As the new community grows, so does the need for first class transport with big plans for North Greenwich Interchange and surrounding area which in turn will lead to further jobs and growth.
