WELCOME T

OTALLY THAMES IS AN INCOMPARABLE CELEBRATION OF THE RIVER THAT, OVER MILLENNIA, HAS BEEN KEY TO LONDON’S DEVELOPMENT AND ITS SUCCESS. Despite its role in ensuring our city’s prosperity through trade links, there was a time when it was underused, even in the doldrums. No more! Increasingly it is recognised as a central part of London life, with 10 million people travelling on it last year, more homes being built along its banks and Londoners and tourists alike enjoying it as one of our city’s greatest attractions – 24 million people

a year walk along the riverside path from the London Eye to Tate Modern alone. September has become ‘river month’ thanks to Totally Thames with almost 200 events, from tall ships, to archaeological foreshore explorations, to contemporary music concerts within the inner workings of Tower Bridge. Totally Thames is the biggest river festival in the world, so take the plunge with us in 2015 – join in! Boris Johnson Mayor of London

T

OTALLY THAMES IS A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION OF WHAT IS ARGUABLY LONDON’S BIGGEST NATURAL ASSET, WITH AN EXCITING MIXED ARTS PROGRAMME OF ARTS AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, TALKS, WALKS AND BOAT RIDES THAT TAKE PLACES THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER. We are delighted to be able to support Totally Thames in delivering this programme along the 42mile stretch of the river. It brings together local communities, boroughs, businesses, tourist and river enthusiasts and offers them the opportunity to see

and access the river through the eyes and imagination of leading artists. Highlights from this year’s programme include a commission by New York based artist Anita Glesta and the Bascule Chambers Concert at Tower Bridge, which is supported through our Grants for the arts funding.” Joyce Wilson Area Director, London Arts Council England

MAYOR’S RIVER ACTION PLAN DELIVERS RECORD THAMES RIDERSHIP Two and a half years since the launch of the Mayor’s River Action Plan, passenger numbers using the River Thames are at an all-time high. Over 10 million journeys were made in 2014/15, an increase of 62 per cent since 2008. A new pier opening in early September at Plantation Wharf will meet this increased demand. Work to extend Bankside, Embankment and Westminster Piers is underway. A new pier will open next year at Battersea Power Station and more are planned for Canary Wharf East and Enderby Wharf. Oyster pay as you go validators will be installed at all River Bus Piers this autumn. These changes show how the river is becoming an increasingly integral part of life in our Capital.
