EDITORIAL Spring? We have been into spring for one week now and it doesn’t really feel like it. I woke up this morning to another blanket of snow on the ground. Last year on this date the temperature was 16 degrees celsius according to Environment Canada. The average temperature for the month of March was 13 degrees and a few days were up to as high as 24 degrees. That is a far cry from the weather we have been experiencing this year. The good thing about snow in March is that it doesn’t last very long. By 11:00 a.m. that blanket of snow was gone. In 2011 we had much the same kind of spring as we are experiencing now. The average temperature of March was 4 degrees. In 2010 the average temperature of March was almost 9 degrees so we were somewhere in between. The average in 2009 was 6 degrees and in 2008 it was 2.6 degrees. This just goes to prove that March is really a wild card in the weather department. You never know exactly what to expect, no matter what the groundhog tries to tell us. October’s average temperature last year was 15 degrees. In 2011 it was 15 degrees, 2010 was 16 degrees, 2009 was 13 degrees, and 2008 was 15 degrees. It seems our fall averages are much closer in line than our spring. There goes the theory that an early spring brings an early fall. Hopefully the snow this year subsides and allows for a warm Easter Egg Hunt for the kids at the Brunner Centre on Saturday. Digging the eggs out of the snow won’t be much fun. No matter what March’s weather has been, the good news is April is almost here and with it will come warmer weather.

The teachers and pupils at the Thamesville Continuation school had some unexpected holidays when the waters of Comwall Creek overflowed and flooded the school basement making it impossible to have a fire in the furnace to heat the school. The river did not overflow its banks and the danger of flooding passed for another year. 80 YEARS AGO Mr. Los Barclay was slightly injured when the car he was driving hit a pole on #2 Highway near what was known as Willis' gas station in the village. He was treated at his home by Dr. McIlwraith but was not too seriously injured.

The youth set up camp in the airplane hanger under a World War II carrier plane that is still flown at the museum on special occasions and at events. The museum also houses one of just two World War II Lancaster Bombers left in the world and still in operation which is also flown at special events. The other Lancaster Bomber still left is located in the British Royal Museum in England. The kids enjoyed some fun aviation themed crafts and activities. They were able to take a flashlight tour of the museum’s night operations. The following morning, 2nd Bothwell toured Dundurn Castle in Hamilton. It is the former mansion of Sir Allan McNab who was Premier of the United Province of Canada 1854 - 1856. McNab was born in 1798 and built the mansion from 1832 - 1835 naming it after his family ancestral seat in Scotland. He enlisted at the age of 15 and was noted for his bravery in the War of 1812. During the Rebellion of 1837 he was one of the government’s most active military supporters and was knighted for his services. The Scouts heard how the mansion was built on part of an underground stone tunnel built by the British soldiers during the War of 1812. Part of the tunnel still remains and the youth were able to walk through it, as they learned the history of the castle.

Wabash News On April 1st, twenty eight years to the day since Don and Shirley Phillips moved to the Wabash Can N’ Bulk store and residence in Wabash, they will make a new move to Dresden. The “store”, which grew to include Patterson Quilts, gained for Shirley the reputation of a great quilt-maker. Also to be missed, Don, an antique collector, will be fondly remembered as an entrepreneur in Rutherford and McKay’s Corners. Always active in community life, Don’s famous Bean Pot attracted diners to many parties. Shirley is president of the Wabash Women’s Institute and is taking her quilting equipment to her new home. Home safe and sound! The Steve and Rachael Ross family – Lauren, Ryan and Kyle-- are home from a great Florida vacation in the Orlando area. They enjoyed Disney World, complete with alligators, which made a real impression. They also visited their maternal grandparents Ray and Yvonne De Lang of Chatham. Earlier this winter, Dave and Nancy Ross and their sons Jackson and Alex cruised the islands on a family friendly Disney Cruise, geared to activities for the children and lots of relaxation for Mom and Dad. The community is praying for a good recovery of Allan Badder – well loved and respected by everyone who has known him in his 9 decades in Wabash. He and his wife, Marilyn are indeed role models for citizenship. The Spring Fling Euchre party at the Institute Hall on Wednesday was a great success. Prizes were won and refreshments were enjoyed by all. The annual luncheon meeting on April 4th will be catered by Loraine Clark at noon at the Hall. The business meeting begins at 10 am.

INMEMORIAM MALLETTE: In memory of Alice Mallette who passed away two years ago today, March 27, 2011. God looked around His garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, “Peace Be Thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. Loving you, missing you & remembering you every day, Your family, Jerry, Ron & Barb, Lyn & John, Carol & Wayne, Donna & Clyde and Mike

Transit Open House held in Thamesville Chatham-Kent’s Transportation employees were at Thamesville United Church on Thursday, March 21st to host a public information session on public transit. They were trying to provide information on the upcoming tender process for the services and see if there was an interest in Thamesville being added to the Inter-Urban route. All contracts will be renewed for January of 2014 and will run until December of 2018. Currently About Town has the contract for Accessible transit in Chatham, WinRide has the contract for the Inter-Urban and Conventional transit in Chatham and Cadillac Cabs has the contract for Accessible transit in Wallaceburg. The transit service is area rated so currently Thamesville does not pay for the services but if they chose to become part of the InterUrban route that would change. The price for a one way trip for an adult on the bus is $5.00 and that is expected to rise to $6.00 with the new contract. The bus stops at the various communities four times daily. The meeting did not have any residents attend and so this is an indicator that Thamesville does not feel the need to be part of the route. Pictured above are Engineering Technologists with Chatham-Kent, Jan Metcalfe and Barry Sullivan at the Open House.
2013 4-H Rabbit Agility Club Jake Funnell On Wednesday March 6th the 4-H Rabbit Agility Club had their first meeting at the Ridgetown Campus Agronomy building. We did the 4-H pledge and then introduced ourselves. Our leaders are Amber Sayers and Phyllis May. Next we did a little game where each member takes off one shoe and each member takes a random one and returns it to it’s rightful owner. Once everyone had their shoe, we held elections. Becky May is the President, Hanna Reid is the VicePresident, Molly Sayers is the Secretary, and Jake Funnell is the Press Reporter. Then we voted for the club name. Hopping Trichobezoars (Hopping Hairballs) won. After elections, we were divided into two groups and played a game called King Elephant. We finished the meeting with a snack provided by our leaders. Our next meeting is an optional meeting during March Break. On Wednesday March 13th the 4-H Rabbit Agility Club had their second meeting at the 4-H barn in Ridgetown. We met there to build rabbit jumps for our agility course, so we got right to work and we were very busy. We were building jumps and obstacles of all kind including tunnels and seesaws and what not. After we finished the building session of the meeting we had cake to celebrate our leader, Amber Sayers’ birthday! Our next meeting is this upcoming Wednesday March 20th at 7:00pm at the 4-H barn in Ridgetown. We are to bring our rabbits and start training them on the obstacle course.
