GM INTRO potentially use bulls they may have turned their back on for fear of inbreeding. This will be a great step in the right direction for speeding up herd improvement. We’ll also be marketing a test that will identify milk proteins, enabling farmers to know which cows are producing A2/A2 milk. There’s an increasing demand for this knowledge and we believe we’ll be moving towards all milk being produced as A2/A2 in the future.

There’s never been a more important time to secure your future as a dairy farmer. Not only have we faced the challenges that Covid-19 has thrown at us, and continues to do so, but at the end of this year we transition out of Europe as a result of Brexit, and maybe without a promised trade deal. In both cases we’re moving into unchartered waters, an ocean that will shape the future of farming in a global marketplace. And while there are many more challenges for us to face (some yet to be recognised) LIC Europe plans to strengthen its partnerships with farmer customers and continue to do all it can to follow the principles of profit - focusing on fertility, longevity, health, welfare and the environment. For most farmers these are uncertain times, with perhaps more questions than answers, but with exciting new collaborations and dynamic products being developed all the time, we know we’re in a great position to work with all farmers to help them to gear up for the future. Our first new partnership is with Neogen, a worldwide leader in biosecurity products, animal genomics, testing and diagnostic animal healthcare products. With their laboratory in Ayr, we’ll be offering parentage testing, an invaluable tool for farmers who don’t know the sires of their stock. With this new tool farmers will be able to identify the sires that have been used in the past, and

As shareholders in NMR, we’re continuing to work alongside them to further develop a herd improvement tool. We’re looking to have it integrated into NMR’s herd companion platform to record and store information on block calving, milk recording, cow servicing and so on. At the same time we‘re looking at partnering with them to improve the uptake of milk recording – a key management tool that will become even more important in the future when we are looking to produce milk as cost-efficiently as some of our European and global competitors. We’re also looking forward to launching HoofPrint™, a new index that provides farmers with accurate insights on bulls born since 1 January 2009. These bulls have the potential to breed progeny for dairy herds with a lighter environmental footprint. LIC is continually striving to reduce the environmental footprint. This tool will identify cows that produce less methane and nitrogen per kg of milk solids. Find more information on this on page 6. And now we’ve completed nearly two years with our sexed semen offering we can see that demand will only grow based on the results we’re capturing. We need to work hard to ensure we continue to sex only the best bulls. Our European bull breeding scheme, based in Ireland, is set to grow significantly in the next year as we gear up to be able to provide greater sexed volumes. As more and more evidence emerges from Moorepark trials that the Jersey and crossbreds are outperforming the top 1% of EBI cows in Ireland, we’re predicting significant growth in the number and amount of Jersey and KiwiCross® bulls used. This bull
breeding programme will become more and more critical to be able to service demand. More details can be found on page 60. There’s no doubt that over the past six months Covid-19 has affected us all, I’m proud to say that our farmers and staff pulled together to ensure minimum impact at farm level, and some of our customers even volunteered to, and did, provide a technician service for us. Independent technicians and Cogent helped us out when it became clear our NZ technicians would be unable to travel, and one of the biggest impacts was around milk price and disruption to international flights. We had issues with getting semen supplies from New Zealand on time, semen deliveries are time critical in a ‘normal’ year, but this time they were even more so. We start collecting semen on January 23 and continue until we have the required amounts. This is tested to ensure it meets European requirements and held for 30 days. Once cleared by vets it starts its journey here, needing to arrive in early to mid-March to be ready to inseminate cows in early April. We got very close to that deadline this year. Finally I would like to thank all our customers and emphasise how proud and pleased we were to get through this health crisis without any of our team succumbing to Covid-19. We followed all social distancing requirements on farm and while our office remained closed throughout the pandemic, we remained in contact with our farmers who were equally supportive throughout. None of us know what the ‘new normal’ will bring, but rest assured that LIC remains committed to working alongside you to help to secure your business and run an efficient, costeffective and environmentally sound operation. UNDERSTANDING NEW ZEALAND BULL DATA Across all Breed Evaluation
Base Cow
The bull data in this catalogue is displayed across all breeds; this is in line with how New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL) and LIC rank New Zealand dairy animals.
The New Zealand Base Cow is the genetic reference point from which Breeding Worth (BW) and Breeding Values (BV) are measured for all New Zealand dairy cattle. All of the bull information in this catalogue is recorded relative to the 2005 Base Cow – the average of 21,585 cows born in the year 2005 – whose production and TOP (traits other than production) data has been set to zero. Each cow has been TOP inspected and milk recorded at least four times to deliver an accurate result.
Because many LIC customers here in the UK and around the world select genetics from multiple breeds for optimal herd performance, it is important for farmers to understand how an animal should perform within the whole herd, not just within one breed of the herd.

The four farmer-scored and 14 inspector-scored TOP traits are considered most important in relation to the overall requirements of dairy farmers. Data Processing The raw data is then sent through to the New Zealand Animal Evaluation unit where within herd, region and national comparisons are analysed and processed. WHAT IS HOOFPRINT™? LIC has developed the HoofPrint™ index to give you, the farmer, an indication of the predicted environmental footprint of the various genetic products. Enteric methane emissions and urinary nitrogen excretion from dairy cows are two of the major contributors to the environmental impact of dairy production in New Zealand. It is extremely difficult and expensive to measure and assess actual emissions and excretion from dairy cows in a pasture based system. Therefore, a modelling methodology has been used to quantify the expected emissions and excretion.
How does the model work? The modelling uses six individual Breeding Values for each animal. These BVs are used to calculate the expected levels of production, calving events, and removal. These BVs are: 1. Liveweight 2. Milk Volume 3. Milkfat 4. Protein 5. Fertility 6. Total Longevity Calculations for energy requirements, partitioning and emissions were based on the ‘Methodology for calculation of New Zealand’s agricultural greenhouse gas emissions’. An understanding of an animal’s energy requirements was used to estimate dry matter intake from which emissions and excretion are calculated. In the inventory, energy requirements refers to the amount of energy that is needed for an animal to survive (maintenance) and produce animal products such as milk, meat, and conceptus (pregnancy). The inventory model currently assumes that dairy cattle consume only pasture to satisfy their energy requirements, and no supplementary feed is used.
Reference Base population: The HoofPrint™ ranking system has only been applied to dairy breeding bulls and therefore the base population too is only made up of dairy bulls index. To ensure the values reflect the current genetic merit of the breeding animals available we have chosen to use a reference population of breeding bulls registered with NZAEL for AB service, born since 1 January 2009, excluding any beef and short gestation length dairy bulls. For 2020 this has created a reference population of 4415 bulls which are then rated based on their emission and excretion values per kilogram of milksolid.
Ranking system: The ranking system is from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest ranking (highest environmental impact per kg product) and 10 being the highest (lowest environmental impact per kg product). To ensure only the very best bulls are able to achieve a 10 point rating only 2% of bulls in this elite reference population can be awarded a 10 point rating at any point in time. The distribution of ratings for the bulls in the elite reference population can be seen below. The distribution is symmetrical so 50% of the bulls will be ranked 6-10 points and 50% 1-5 points.

PASTURE-BASED DAIRY FARMERS FIND NICHE IN GERMANY
Irish brothers Paul and Stephen Costello had a dream. To set up a pasturebased dairy system in an area of Germany not known for year-round grazing of cows. Using New Zealand (NZ) genetics and grassland management systems they’re now producing millions of litres from quality pasture, and the farm is attracting visitors from across Europe. The Netzen farm, south of Brandenburg, is 1600ha and carries 900 dairy cows. When they aren’t grazing grass, they’re eating conserved grass, silage, and they remain outdoors 365 days a year. While this farm aims to graze the cows all year-round, this isn’t essential. Many farms across Europe are interested in extending the grazing period and to gradually transition cows to a more grass-based system. It’s much easier to take incremental steps. When the Netzen farm was purchased in 2014, Paul took on a herd of 400 high-yielding Holstein cows on an all-year-round calving system, with all stock housed yearround. The cows were fed large amounts of concentrates and maize silage with very small amounts of grass silage. The herd was in very poor condition in terms of health,
yield and reproduction with farm costs also in a bad way. “Our view was that this type of system wasn’t sustainable or profitable and to move forward we would need large investments in sheds, cows and infrastructure to sort out these issues,” says Paul. “Even if we went this route we would still be in a conventional system in an industry that demands very high volumes and yields that were way beyond our skill set.” “In 2015 the quota system was ending and we felt that the milk market would become more volatile with no cap on production. We believed the big would get bigger to stay in the same place and only the fittest and most efficient farmers would do well. We didn’t really fit into either of those brackets. We had to change and look for a niche market for our product, or get out of dairy altogether.” They began the switch to a grassbased system of seasonal spring calving, changing genetics to breed a crossbred cow much smaller and more suited to grass. The result was a quality grass-fed product, with high animal welfare and environmental benefits, that was both sustainable and economically viable. “Our view is that a successful grazing system in Germany needs to work across three key areas. First with the correct cow, then the correct calving
pattern, ensuring you match the grass growth curve to the lactation of the cow, and thirdly to ensure you have the correct grassland management.” “The cow is the most important, which is why we decided to go with genetics from LIC. The crossbred cows are undoubtedly best suited to this system. They offer advantages in size, grass conversion, fertility and health. They’re flexible, able to adapt to systems in both directions. Feed them and they can milk more or reduce feed costs when necessary without sacrificing the animal’s health and condition.” “The genetics we used were pure Jersey initially to produce F1 crossbreeds. We focused our selection based on fat, protein and fertility, as we knew the Holstein would bring milk volume.” “Finally we bought a lot of crossbred cows and heifers from Ireland from farms already using LIC genetics for many years.” For Paul and Stephen the journey has really only just begun. They still have a lot to learn, are working more closely with the retail side of their business and looking at how to roll out their concept across other European countries. WALFORD COLLEGE MONITOR FARM
LIC Europe is delighted to have taken on a new monitor farm, Walford College which is part of North Shropshire College. The farm is at an exciting crossroads as it makes the transition from all-year-round calving to an autumn block. Walford College farm manager Tom Moore took over the running of the farm in 2019 and was given the mandate to achieve a breakeven budget, promote best practice within the industry, and to ensure animal welfare is upheld. He’s been working alongside Pasture to Profit consultant Sean Chubb for more than nine months now, moving the herd from being predominantly Holstein which were kept indoors, to a grass-based outdoor herd. When he took over, cost of production was 66.7ppl with feed and bedding making up 39% of this, Tom knew that moving to a grazing system would lower these costs. To promote best practice, the monitoring process is seeing the farm track progress against key performance indicators for herd fertility, grass growth and covers, liveweight of heifers and cows, production efficiency and production from forage. With most colleges and universities in the UK focusing on high input systems, Walford will play a huge role in training the next generation of staff looking to obtain jobs within the grazing herd community.

The first change was one for the infrastructure of the farm, as the existing herd had never been out to graze pasture. One of the first steps was to map the farm creating 18 paddocks on the 63ha milking platform. The paddocks are around 3ha in size, with a couple at 5ha, and have four points of access; two off the track, and one from each of the paddocks on either side. Over a kilometer of sand tracks have been put in to link the paddocks. To preserve the tracks, no heavy machinery will travel on them, instead they will move through the farm from paddock to paddock. A ringed water line has also been developed to provide water to all the paddocks. The plan is to increase cow numbers naturally up to 250 cows at the same time as reducing weights from the heavier Holstein at an estimated 700kgs to around 550-600kgs. LIC bulls used so far include Sierra, Hammer, Beaut and Kelsbells, while moving the herd into a single block will happen over a two-year period. The previous calving spread was moved to put all the cows and heifers into one of two blocks, first an autumn block and then whatever wasn’t in-calf from there would be mated in the spring to form the second block. From there the spring block will be rolled around to autumn after calving down in the 2021 season, this would see all cows calving in the autumn block by 2022.
Latest results show that the autumn 2019 mating was a success, with half the herd – including the heifers – able to get in-calf for this block. The key performance indicators of conception, and six-week in-calf rate, indicate the success of this mating period. “The figures were never going to meet the targets, as the number of eligible cows was increasing all the time throughout the mating period,” explains Sean. “The spring mating period is on target to meet block calving standards with an early pregnancy test showing 46% are due to calve in the first two weeks. “A key aspect of making the transition a success was to get the cows out on grass and achieve good residuals. We were constantly told, leading to turnout, that Holsteins can’t graze and that corrective measures would be needed to keep grass quality. “But this hasn’t been the case, with the cows happily grazing down to below 1600kg/DM on a regular basis.” Covid 19 permitting, LIC is hoping to hold a monitor farm open day in October, and has also produced four webinars looking at developments on the farm. ONCE-A-DAY LIC’s Once-A-Day (OAD) index has been developed to help OAD farmers breed cows that persist throughout lactation and have longevity in the herd. The index has a strong correlation to Breeding Worth (BW) as well as four functional traits that are required in a desirable OAD cow: Capacity, Udder Support, Front Teat Placement and Milking Speed. The graph shows the weighting of the traits within the OAD Index, in addition to the existing eight traits of BW. Unlike BW & PW, the OAD index does not represent an economic value of the animal’s productive performance or ability to breed profitable replacements.

HIGH INPUT LIC’s High Input Index focuses on a range of traits as well as Breeding Worth (BW) to identify animals that are best suited to High Input systems. Those traits include Capacity, Udder Support, Udder Overall and Protein. The graph shows the weighting of the traits within the High Input Index, in addition to the existing eight traits of BW. The High Input index allows two animals to be compared based on their suitability to the system. Unlike BW & PW, it does not represent an economic value of the animal’s productive performance or ability to breed profitable replacements.

SGL With a team of bulls selectively bred to shorten gestation length, the SGL product can help you to shorten your calving, increase days in milk, and give your cows longer to recover improving their chances of getting back in calf. There is a range of SGL products available:
SGL Hereford LIC and leading Hereford breeders, Shrimpton’s Hill Herefords, have developed Hereford bulls with a gestation length up to 9 days shorter than their breed average. These beef bulls breed white-faced offspring that you can easily identify in the herd.
SGL Dairy SGL Dairy is a team of bulls with a gestation length up to -20 days. When mated to a cow with normal gestation length, these bulls can reward you with a calving interval up to 10 days shorter than normal. The progeny of these SGL Dairy bulls cannot be kept as replacements.
SGL plus BW SGL plus BW combines genetics for a shorter gestation with sound genetic merit so farmers can keep heifer calves as replacements. These SGL sires have been tested to ensure their traits are passed on to their offspring, with the purpose of improving the overall efficiency of your herd.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR USING SEXED SEMEN To get the very best out of sexed semen on your farm, we recommend using a planned approach. Some suggestions include:
• mate heifers 10 days or more ahead of the main herd. You’ll get early-born replacements and the returns can be mated again in the next round of AI
• ensure underlying herd fertility performance is at a high level before considering the use of sexed semen and that AI best-practice is followed
• avoid mix-ups by calving those in-calf to AI bulls separately to those in-calf to stock bulls
• have plenty of stock bulls on hand to cover returning cows. For example, two teams of one bull to 30 nonpregnant cows if using a two-year-old bull, plus spares
• be certain the cow is on full standing heat. If you're unsure, use a conventional straw • use strict cow selection criteria for sexed semen matings. For example, young, high genetic merit, healthy, earlycalved and cycling cows have better conception rates • mate selected cows ahead of the herd’s mating start date, or move the mating start date of the herd forward a day or two if necessary
• follow STgenetics® handling and insemination instructions for SexedULTRA 4M® sexed semen which can be found at licnz.com/uksexed.cfm • mate yearling heifers to sexed semen, as they have higher conception rates than in-milk cows. Choose bulls suitable for yearling mating and pregnancy scan early to identify those in-calf to AI bulls
Contact your local LIC FSM for more information. They can work with you to estimate the potential impact of using sexed semen on your herd and create a variety of mating plan options to help achieve your goals.

IRISH JERSEY AND CROSSBRED TRIAL He noted that while all three breeds performed well, it was the Jersey crossbred that came out on top. Brennan also discussed data from the Clonakilty study, which showed no significant difference in milk solids production per cow between the Jersey-cross at 469kgMS/ cow and the Holstein Friesian at 460kgMS/cow. However, the threeway cross produced significantly less at 453kgMS/cow.
Early results show Jersey animals outperforming the top 1% EBI cows in Ireland according to data from the latest on-going trials at the world renowned Teagasc facility at Moorepark in Ireland. In addition, FXJ crossbreds were deemed to outperform both the three-way cross and Holsteins at their Clonakilty Research Facility. The Next Generation herd, established at Moorepark in 2013, compared high EBI (elite) Holstein Friesian cows to a national average EBI group. These elite animals are now said to be 10 years ahead of the national average. In 2018, high-EBI purebred Jerseys were included in the study. These animals originated as heifers purchased in Denmark, embryos imported from New Zealand (NZ) and some females from Teagasc’s own Jersey herd, made up of mostly NZ genetics. Looking at the two strains of Jersey, it soon became apparent that the NZ Jerseys were more suited to the Irish grazingbased system than the Danish Jerseys. NZ Jerseys had higher milk solids, higher body condition score and better longevity. In Denmark, dairy cows are mainly kept indoors all year round and fed a TMR ration. This highlights the importance of selecting cows that are bred for the system. The early findings pointed to continued additive genetic gain in

NZ, as evidenced by the production and fertility performances compared to previous Teagasc studies, and reflected in the high EBI of the NZ Jersey cows. With high genetic merit and complementary traits, this reinforces the value of NZJ as eminently suitable for cross breeding with HF to generate highly efficient and profitable dairy cows, particularly in the context of Ireland’s production system. In terms of milk solids, the performance of the NZ Jersey was 12kgMS/cow less than the elite cows. However, the Jersey’s weighed an average of 406kg and produced 445kg MS/cow (1.08kgMS/kg LWT) while the elite cows weighed 514kgs and produced 457kg MS (0.88kgMS/kg LWT). The lighter Jerseys were stocked 9% higher at 3 cows/ha compared with 2.75 cows/ha for the Holstein Friesians. Concentrate levels were the same per cow. On a production per hectare basis, the NZ Jerseys came out on top at 1,305kgMS/ha followed by the elite herd at 1,259kgMS/ha. These results were recently published in Irish Farmers Journal and led the author, Aidan Brennan, to comment: “Whether you love them or hate them, these little Jersey cows at Moorepark are punching well above their weight. Their EBI is almost €40 behind the elite herd, yet they are whipping the socks off both Holstein Friesian groups in terms of production and they have good fertility.”
Reproductive performance was excellent across all three breeds, especially with Holstein Friesian who recorded an average of 3% empty after 12 weeks of breeding and the other two groups recording 7%. “Despite this excellent performance for the Holstein Friesian, the Jersey crossbred was still more profitable, even on a per cow basis,” wrote Brennan. “Where cow numbers are fixed, net profit per cow in the grass and clover swards came out at €938 for the Jersey crossbred, €926 for the Holstein Friesian and €890 for the three-way cross. “As more and more evidence emerges from the Moorepark trials that the Jersey and crossbred cows are outperforming the top EBI cows in Ireland, we’re predicting significant growth in demand. And it is critical that we service that demand,” says LIC Europe general manager Mark Ryder. “It’s refreshing to see some neutral science-based analysis being produced. This is very much in line with what we’re seeing on farm in NZ, Ireland and the UK, and won’t come as a surprise to our customers but it’s great to see this being confirmed by robust scientific research. “We’re really pleased to be able to report on this work from such an esteemed research facility as Moorepark,” says Ryder. “The results confirm what we’ve been telling Irish and UK farmers for many years. Now they can go ahead and buy Jersey and crossbred semen, conventional or sexed, and use it with total confidence when they’re looking to secure their future.”
BEEF OPTIONS LIC UK offers beef semen to farmers to provide them with more opportunities to enhance their farm businesses. Genetic gain in the herd is accelerated and at the same time extra revenue is generated through dairy beef opportunities.
Short Gestation Length (SGL) Hereford SGL Hereford is a premium short gestation beef product, offering farmers the ability to achieve more days in milk while producing a dairy beef calf that is easily identifiable among AI dairy replacements. SGL Hereford semen is supplied through an exclusive agreement between LIC and Shrimpton’s Hill Herefords breeders, John and Liz McKerchar. Shrimpton’s Hill’s short gestation programme was established in 2001; today they are the breeders of the leading Herefords in Australasia for short gestation length and have just sold their one millionth semen straw. Building on the Shrimpton’s Hill Hereford Stud established by John’s father in 1969, the McKerchar’s pride themselves in providing dairy farmers worldwide with Herefords specifically bred for short gestation length and calving ease.
Wagyu Wagyu is a beef breed that originated in Japan. It is often considered as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of beef for its high level of fat marbling that makes it extremely tender, juicy and delicious. For the first time LIC UK is offering Wagyu beef semen to use over dairy animals. Farmers can add value to non-replacement calves and reduce bobby calf numbers by producing dairy beef calves that can be sold and raised for beef.
