A head start in Early Years

Study at our Folkestone campus and get the skills you need to get a head start for a rewarding career in the Early Years sector. We are currently one of the few Colleges in the UK to offer Forest School Training as part of your Study Programme which will help you to develop practical skills in outdoor play and learning activities, skills which are currently in great demand.

Get to study in some of the largest and best equipped construction training workshops in the South East. We are very proud of our woodworking machine shop which is recognised as one of the best training workshops of its kind in the UK. You will also benefit from our fantastic links with local employers and suppliers which will get you off to a great career in the construction industry.

Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs)

Entry requirements For all Study Programmes you will be required to have an interview, an initial assessment and reference. There may also be more specific requirements for your particular Study Programme.

ENTRY LEVEL 3

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships can be started at various levels according to the individual’s experience and background, the work they are doing, and the

A HNC is a Level 4 course which allows you to progress to HND or degree programme. This is equivalent to the first year of a degree course. A HND is a Level 5 course which allows you to progress onto a degree top-up course. This is equivalent to the second year of a degree.

LEVEL 3

Access Course This is a Level 3 course that is usually considered to be equivalent to two A-Levels. An Access Course is often used as a route to a degree-level course.

There are many different pathways to choose from, depending on your preferred learning method. Whether you choose an academic pathway, such as A-Levels, a vocational route such as a BTEC or VRQ Diploma or a workbased qualification such as an Apprenticeship, you can always progress on to the next Level up to a Higher Education course or professional qualification.

LEVEL 1

Other qualifications

HNC (Higher National Certificate)/HND (Higher National Diploma)

All courses and qualifications, at school and at College, are given a Level; the higher the Level, the more advanced the qualification.

LEVEL 2

East Kent College offers a wide range of VRQs. These are vocationally related qualifications for students who wish to prepare for a career in a specific vocational area. They are offered at levels 1, 2 and 3 and allow you to develop and practice skills required for employment and/or career progression in your chosen sector. College-based study consists of a combination of theory and practical activities related to the world of work.

Advanced Apprenticeships offer Level 3 qualifications and can lead to a Level 4 Foundation Degree or degree-level study. Higher Level Apprenticeships are at Level 4 or Level 5, and are becoming available so that higher-level study can be undertaken ‘on the job’.

National Diplomas and Extended Diplomas (at Level 3) are broadly equivalent to two or three A-Levels and could enable progression to higher education if GCSE’s at grade C or above in English and maths have been achieved.

In the following pages you will find out more about our exciting range of full-time Study Programmes. These programmes are career-focused and designed to equip you for the world of work. They are all about getting the right experience and skills which will make you a valued employee in the eyes of an employer.

Apprenticeships

Ofsted praised our links with local employers as well as our Study Programmes, which provide skills and training that are relevant to East Kent as well as the ‘employability’ skills that businesses need.

An Apprenticeship means you work and get paid while learning an industry skill. Being an Apprentice really does give you the best of both worlds, enabling you to gain valuable hands-on working experience as well as a formal qualification. However, that does not mean Apprenticeships are easy. You must take your Apprenticeship seriously, have the dedication to succeed in the world of work, and have enthusiasm for studying in the industry sector you wish to pursue. To be eligible for an Apprenticeship you need to already be employed or find suitable employment. Do not be afraid to ask an employer if they would consider taking you on as an Apprentice. Our Centre for Apprenticeships and Workplace Learning has staff available who will be happy to talk to potential employers to discuss the requirements of an Apprenticeship.

If you are aged 16 to 18 years old the core of your Study Programme will be the academic/vocational programme of your choice. You will also take part in some form of work related learning.

If you do not have a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will continue to study English and Maths at the appropriate level when you come to College. Our Virtual Learning Environment will support your learning and study and help you keep track of where you are and in touch with your lecturers and classmates.

Progression Curriculum The Foundation Studies in what we call our ‘Progression Curriculum’ have been designed so that if you are not sure which area you would like to study, you can sample a different vocational area at various points throughout the year. It provides the opportunity to study a nationally recognised qualification in a specific vocational area. This flexibility is to encourage you to find your area of interest and work towards meeting the standards to move onto a Level 2 programme or into an Apprenticeship. If you want to focus on one area only you are welcome to do so.

Design, Photography and Media (Level 2) September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you are aiming at a career in the creative industries and want to start your journey through experiencing a range of professional roles. You’ll learn: by working in teams to make a range of Creative industry products such as photography, short feature films, documentary films, advertising campaigns, social media management, graphics and blogs. You will develop a range of professional and entrepreneurial skills. These include starting up and trading a social enterprise business, community focused work and client based projects to root your learning in the real world. Assessment will be by building a portfolio of project work and externally examined units of study. Look forward to: the chance to develop real industry skills by working on a range of exciting projects for real external clients. How do I get started? You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at D grades or equivalent, including Maths and English. Students may be able to progress from Level 1 vocationally related programmes. What next? On successful completion you could progress onto one of our Level 3 programmes.

Photography (Level 3) September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you want to develop your career in photography and be a freelance creative and be challenged to produce work to a professional standard. You’ll learn: a range of different photography skills and experience a broad range of professional type photography work such as location, studio, commercial and fashion photography. This is a fast paced professionally focused Study Programme which will enable you to develop a range of professional skills by working to start up a social enterprise business and undertake a series of jobs for external clients. You will learn firsthand how to be professional, secure contracts and develop a network of contacts. Assessment will be by building a portfolio of project work and externally examined units of study. Look forward to: being taught by our experienced industry professionals and being put through your paces by our range of professional partners from the photography and creative industries. How do I get started? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at C grades or equivalent, including English and Maths. Students may be able to progress from Level 2 vocationally related programmes. Design and Web (Level 3) September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you wish to develop professional skills to prepare you to work in the digital design industries and be challenged to produce work to a professional standard in our rigorous and rewarding five day per week curriculum. You’ll learn: by working on dynamic and challenging projects. You will work in teams and undertake a range of

professional roles to create advertising campaigns, develop brand identities, design websites, shoot and edit films, manage social media campaigns and enter work in national and international competitions. Working in our brand new design and business studios using industry standard kit, you will study a range of topics such as ideas and concepts, communication, freelance and collaborative working, and specialist illustration and information graphics. Assessment will be by building a portfolio of project work and externally examined units of study. Look forward to: being taught by our experienced industry professionals and being put through your paces by our range of professional partners from the design and web industries. Film, Television and Media (Level 3) September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you want to experience these fast paced and demanding industries by working in teams to make feature films, develop your creativity and produce your own work with the support of a full crew and industry professionals. Be challenged to produce work to a professional standard in our rigorous and rewarding five day per week curriculum. You’ll learn: how media industries operate and how to be successful in the film, television and wider media industries such as journalism and photography. Using our top of the range industry equipment you will work from day one on a range of film and TV projects and learn to be creative

and push the boundaries of film and media production. All students will work alongside other creative and business students to start-up and run businesses to develop your entrepreneurial personality and business skills.

You will learn through the participation in work based projects and assessment will be by building a portfolio.

September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you want to learn about the world of business and learn entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed within the world of business. You’ll learn: the fundamentals of business and how successful business people think. Using a hands on approach to learning you will work in teams to plan, start up and run a social enterprise business. Teamwork, leadership, communication, and financial skills will be developed. You will plan and run real events and activities in the College and local community. You will learn through participation in work based projects and assessment will be by building a portfolio.

You’ll learn: about business by working in teams to start up and run businesses. We will work with you to develop and plan your business ventures and help you develop a range of entrepreneurial skills to make it happen.

Level 3 Film, TV and Media My dream career is to work in the film industry, to direct and write. I am enjoying working with the Folkestone Triennial, we are photographing it. The Edge is a lot more professional, you’re given the freedom to create and be who you want to, and you are not restricted. We have also been awarded the Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Award for our pioneering Supported Internship Programmes that work with a range of employers including a local hospital, a Sure Start centre, Sainsburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Asda. Our highly successful internships are designed to empower young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, who might otherwise be excluded from the workplace. We aim to increase your skills and help you move into paid, sustainable employment.

Our award-winning Supported Learning Study Programmes are tailor-made to support young people and adults with learning difficulties and/ or disabilities to gain life and work skills while studying in a supportive environment.

Programmes offered range from Entry Level 3 to Level 1. High-quality teaching takes place in small group sizes, ensuring excellent levels of support. Applied Science (Level 3) September 2015 – 1 Year Course Perfect if: you want a career in the science industry working for internationally renowned industry leaders. Application 1.1 These Terms and Conditions shall apply to the provision of the services (‘Services’) by East Kent College of Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN (“College”) to you (“Student”). No other terms and conditions shall apply to the provision of services unless agreed upon in writing between the College and the Student.

2.2 The headings in these Terms and Conditions are for convenience only and shall not affect their interpretation. 2.3 Words imparting the singular number shall include the plural and vice-versa.

3. Definitions 3.1 Every Student of the College, whether full–time or not, must enrol for each programme and pay the fees appropriate to their course of study at the College. 3.2 In all College documentation “Sponsor” is deemed to include Skills Funding Agency; Education Funding Agency; local authority/central government schemes; local enterprise companies; employers and training boards or agencies. 3.3 No person shall be deemed to be an enrolled Student unless they have completed and signed a College learning agreement and agreed to meet the liability for the relevant fees, where a Sponsor does not meet the liability on their behalf. 3.4 In signing the learning agreement the Student undertakes to observe these Terms and Conditions (including all current published College Policies, Codes and Regulations) and consents to the College obtaining, recording, holding, processing personal data including data of a sensitive nature. Students are responsible for informing the College of any changes to the information provided on enrolment.

4. Fees and Payment 4.1 The course fees (“Fees”) for the Services are set out in the prospectus. 4.2 In addition to the Fees, the College is entitled to recover from the Student reasonable incidental expenses for materials used and for third party goods and/ or services supplied in connection with the Services. 4.3 Liability for fees is incurred at enrolment and the College reserves the right to withdraw any offer for a Student who has not paid or arranged, to the satisfaction of the College, payment of fees within a reasonable time. 4.4 The Student shall pay the Fees due for the Services at or prior to enrolment or otherwise in accordance with any credit terms agreed between the College or their credit agency and the Student via an instalment plan. 4.5 If the Student fails to make payment within the period in clause 4.4, the College shall have the right to suspend the provision of the Services (where the provision of the Services is on-going) until payment is made to the satisfaction of the College. 4.6 The Student remains liable for any fees not paid by a Sponsor (see clause 3 above for definition of Sponsor)

4.7 If the Student fails to make payment within the period stated in clause 4.4 the College reserves the right to charge the Student interest at the rate of 8% per annum on the amount outstanding until payment is made in full.

6. Liability and Indemnity 6.1 If the College fails (or has failed) to perform the Services with reasonable care and skill it shall carry out all required remedial action at no additional cost to the Student.

4.8 Time for payment is of the essence of the contract between the College and the Student.

6.2 The College shall not be liable to the Student or be deemed to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions by reason of any delay in performing, or any failure to perform, any of the College’s obligations if such delay or failure is due to any cause beyond the College’s reasonable control.

4.9 Receipts for payment will be issued by the College only at the Student’s request. 4.10 All payments must be made in pounds sterling (£) unless otherwise agreed in writing between the College and the Student. 4.11 The College has a Fees Policy which can be found on the College’s website (www.eastkent.ac.uk) which also includes the College’s policy on refunds. A copy of the Fees Policy can be requested from the Finance Office East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN. 5. Cancelling or Changing Contents of Courses 5.1 The College reserves the right not to run courses where the number of Students is considered insufficient or where resources are unavailable or to change the contents of a course where it is considered appropriate by the College to do so. 5.2 Where numbers of Students dictate, courses may be amalgamated so that they may comprise a number of subjects, including parts of the Student’s chosen subjects and parts of other related subjects. 5.3 All admission to courses is at the final discretion of the Principal. 5.4 The College reserves the right to refuse admission to any course because of restricted availability of facilities due to accommodation or teaching requirements or for any other reason which the College deems it necessary to do so. 5.5 On College programmes of more than one year duration, progression to Year 2 (and subsequent years) is dependent on satisfactory performance in the previous year.

6.3 The Student shall indemnify the College against all damages, costs, claims and expenses suffered by the College arising from any loss or damage to any equipment (including that belonging to third parties) caused by the Student. 6.4 The College does hold third party liability insurance which indemnifies the College with respect to claims from third parties, including Students, who have suffered injury, illness, loss or damage arising from the negligence of the College or its employees. However, if there is no negligence, no claim would be accepted by the College or its insurers. A copy of the College Public Liability insurance is displayed in the reception area of the College campus. 7. Force Majeure Neither party shall be liable for any failure nor is delay in performing their obligations where such failure or delay results from any cause that beyond the reasonable control of that party. Such causes include, but are not limited to: power failure, internet service provider failure, industrial action, civil unrest, fire, flood, storms, earthquakes, acts of terrorism, acts of war, governmental action or any other event that is beyond the control of the party in question. 8. Communications 8.1 All notices under these Terms and Conditions shall be in writing and signed by, or on behalf of, the party giving notice (or a duly authorised officer of that party). 8.2 Notices shall be deemed to have been duly given: (a) when delivered, if delivered by courier or other messenger (including registered mail) during the normal business hours of the recipient; (b) when sent, if transmitted by fax or email and a successful transmission report or return receipt is generated;

(c) on the fifth business day following mailing, if mailed by national ordinary mail; or on the tenth business day following mailing, if mailed by airmail. 8.3 All notices under these Terms and Conditions shall be addressed to the Corporate Services Office at East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN. 9. No Waiver 9.1 No waiver by the College of any breach of these Terms and Conditions by the Student shall be considered as a waiver of any subsequent breach of the same or any other provision. 9.2 No failure or delay on the part of either the College or the Student to exercise any right, power or privilege under these Terms and Conditions shall operate as a waiver of, nor shall any single or partial exercise of any such right, power or privilege preclude, any other or further exercise of any other right, power or privilege. 10. Severance In the event that one or more of these Terms and Conditions is found to be unlawful, invalid or otherwise unenforceable, that/those provisions shall be deemed severed from the remainder of these Terms and Conditions (which shall remain valid and enforceable). 11. Consumer Rights and Complaints Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall affect the Student’s statutory rights as a consumer. In the event the Student has a concern, the College Complaints Procedure is available on the College website (www.eastkent.ac.uk) or from the Corporate Services Office at East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN. 12.
