The Future Building, our new Centre for Environmental Technologies, is the only one of its kind in Kent. From solar panels on the roof, to visible plumbing systems, the building generates its own source of power and is used as a teaching tool in its own right to demonstrate a wide range of design, sustainable construction and engineering techniques.

New for 2015 is our Centre for Creative Industries, The Michael Wright Building, a £3.3million development boasting an amphitheatre, digital media suites and recording studios. With top of the range industry standard kit and the latest technologies our students will study in some of the most stimulating creative facilities in Kent.

Our very own 4 star training hotel

New for this academic year is a unique development, our 4 star Yarrow Hotel, converted from a stunning Grade 2 listed building within the campus grounds. With 30 rooms, beauty salons, a gym and restaurant, the hotel will be open to the public and provide a valuable training resource for Hospitality and Catering students, as well as Hair and Beauty and Enterprise students.

The Hub

The Hub has been specifically designed for students who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The facilities include a bespoke room to teach personal care; a quiet pod where students can go if they need time out; a study pod, which includes specialist computer facilities and flexible teaching rooms.

Entry requirements For all Study Programmes you will be required to have an interview, an initial assessment and reference. There may also be more specific requirements for your particular Study Programme.

ENTRY LEVEL 3

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships can be started at various levels according to the individual’s experience and background, the work they are doing, and the

An HNC is a Level 4 course which could allow you to progress to HND or degree programme. This is equivalent to the first year of a degree course. An HND is a Level 5 course which allows you to progress onto a degree top-up course. This is equivalent to the second year of a degree.

LEVEL 1

Access Course for students 19 + This is a Level 3 course that is usually considered to be equivalent to two A-Levels. An Access Course is often used as a route to a degree-level course.

There are many different pathways to choose from, depending on your preferred learning method. Whether you choose an academic pathway, such as A-Levels, a vocational route such as a BTEC or VRQ Diploma or a workbased qualification such as an Apprenticeship, you can always progress on to the next Level up to a Higher Education course or professional qualification. LEVEL 3

Other qualifications

HNC (Higher National Certificate)/HND (Higher National Diploma)

All courses and qualifications, at school and at College, are given a Level; the higher the Level, the more advanced the qualification.

LEVEL 2

East Kent College offers a wide range of VRQs. These are vocationally related qualifications for students who wish to prepare for a career in a specific vocational area. They are offered at levels 1, 2 and 3 and allow you to develop and practice skills required for employment and/or career progression in your chosen sector. College-based study consists of a combination of theory and practical activities related to the world of work.

Advanced Apprenticeships offer Level 3 qualifications and can lead to a Level 4 Foundation Degree or degree-level study. Higher Level Apprenticeships are at Level 4 or Level 5 and are becoming available so that higher-level study can be undertaken ‘on the job’.

National Diplomas and Extended Diplomas (at Level 3) are broadly equivalent to two or three A-Levels and could enable progression to higher education if GCSE’s at grade C or above have been achieved in English and maths.

Accounting

An Apprenticeship means you work and get paid while learning an industry skill. Being an Apprentice really does give you the best of both worlds, enabling you to gain valuable hands on working experience as well as a formal qualification. However, that does not mean Apprenticeships are easy. You must take your Apprenticeship seriously, have the dedication to succeed in the world of work, and have enthusiasm for studying in the industry sector you wish to pursue.

Ofsted praised our links with local employers as well as our Study Programmes, which provide skills and training that are relevant to East Kent as well as the ‘employability’ skills that businesses need.

To be eligible for an Apprenticeship you need to already be employed or find suitable employment. Do not be afraid to ask an employer if they would consider taking you on as an Apprentice. Our Centre for Apprenticeships and Workplace Learning has staff available who will be happy to talk to potential employers to discuss the requirements of an Apprenticeship. We offer Apprenticeship Frameworks in a wide range of areas which include:

If you are aged 16 to 18 years old the core of your Study Programme will be the academic/vocational programme of your choice. You will also take part in some form of work related learning.

Progression Curriculum The Foundation Studies in what we call our ‘Progression Curriculum’ have been designed so that if you are not sure which area you would like to study, you can sample a different vocational area at various points throughout the year. It provides the opportunity to study a nationally recognised qualification in a specific vocational area. This flexibility is to encourage you to find your area of interest and work towards meeting the standards to move onto a Level 2 programme or into an Apprenticeship. If you want to focus on one area only you are welcome to do so.

Example careers Automotive Mechanic (£15,000 – £25,000) As a Mechanic you will work on all types of vehicles from cars, vans, motorbikes to lorries and coaches. You will need to understand how electrical vehicle systems work as well as the mechanical side of vehicle repair…

Our Automotive Study Programmes will get you ready for employment in servicing and repairing all kinds of vehicles in this wide-ranging industry, including specialist Study Programmes that enable you to work with super-fast high-performance racing vehicles. The days when a spanner was the most important tool for fixing an engine are long gone. Although you still need mechanical skills to get on in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair these days, you also need knowledge of sophisticated electronic controls and instruments. In addition you need to know how to use computerised diagnostic equipment to find faults. Wherever your interest lies one of our Study Programmes will give you a wide range of skills to help you get started in your chosen career.

Motor Vehicle (Entry Level 3 / Level 1) September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you are interested in cars and want to learn how to carry out basic repair and maintenance work. You’ll learn: basic principles of motor vehicle maintenance and repair. You will also gain an understanding of the technology used to detect and fix faults in our top of the range workshops. You will learn through practical sessions in our workshops and assessment will be through written work and online tests. Look forward to: a hands on experience with the chance to participate in field trips and national competitions. How do I get started? There are no formal entry requirements for this Study Programme, however, a keen interest in the subject area is vital. What next? On successful completion you could move onto our Level 2 Motor Vehicle programme which will enable you to become a Motor Mechanic or Fast Fit Technician.

Perfect if: you are a budding designer, engineer or have an interest in working within the Motor Racing industry, both nationally and internationally.

You’ll learn: how to carry out routine inspections and how to remove and replace major components. You will have the chance to work on a wide variety of vehicle systems in our top of the range workshop environments under the guidance of trained and certified automotive professionals. You will learn through practical sessions in our workshops and assessment will be through observation of competence and written work supporting online tests. Look forward to: working with the latest technologies on a range of current vehicles, including Hybrid/ Electric cars, to develop your skills. Trips to various interesting places include; The London Motor Show, Mercedes Benz World and Caterham Cars. You will have talks and demonstrations from industry professionals. How do I get started? You will need a minimum of four GCSEs at D grades or equivalent, including Maths and English. You may be able to progress from the Level 1 Motor Vehicle Study Programme. What next? On successful completion you could move onto our Level 3 Motor Vehicle Study Programme and work towards a career as a Motor Vehicle Diagnostic Technician, Mechanic or Fast Fit Technician.

You’ll learn: how to repair a broad range of vehicle systems using the latest computer-aided diagnosis and scanning equipment and hybrid vehicle training rigs in our well-equipped workshops. As well as practical skills you will gain experience in agreeing customer needs and other employability skills. You will learn through practical sessions in our workshops and assessment will be through demonstration of competence, written assignment work and online tests. Look forward to: the opportunity to carry out diagnostics on a range of modern vehicles. Take part in trips to relevant automotive locations like Delphi and Mercedes Benz World and gain insight into the industry with guest speakers from local specialist businesses. How do I get started? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at C grades or equivalent, including Maths and English and you will have completed a Level 2 vocationally related programme. What next? On successful completion you could progress onto our Level 4 Advanced Automotive Studies programme or you could gain employment within the motor vehicle industry as a Mechanic or Vehicle Diagnostics Technician.

You’ll learn: motor mechanics and electrical vehicle maintenance. Alongside this you will learn about critical areas of race vehicle production, including the modifications and technical adjustments needed to improve performance and maximise reliability.

You will learn through practical sessions in our workshops and assessment will be through written work and online tests.

My dream career is to become a Master Technician and to one day have my own business.

Look forward to: preparing race cars for local events and actively helping out at motor racing events. You will have the opportunity to build a high performance sports car from scratch as well as preparing racing vehicles for local drivers at Lydden Hill Race Course.

I chose to study at East Kent College because it was a good option for me as I’ve been home educated and didn’t have any qualifications. East Kent College has helped me improve my qualifications and career options.

How do I get started? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at C grades or equivalent, including Maths and English. You may be able to progress from the Level 2 vocationally related study programmes.

I enjoy getting to know people on my course and all aspects, from learning the theory side of the course to the practical hands on approach.

What next? On successful completion you could progress onto our Level 4 Advanced Automotive Studies programme or you could gain employment within the motor sports industry.

Our award-winning Supported Learning Study Programmes are tailor-made to support young people and adults with learning difficulties and/ or disabilities to gain life and work skills while studying in a supportive environment.

The Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Supported Learning Study Programmes are based in brand-new facilities, including an accessible computer room, personal care facilities, a working shop and flexible area, which support holistic and realistic learning. Applied Science (Level 3) September 2015 – 1 Year Perfect if: you want a career in the science industry working for internationally renowned industry leaders. You’ll learn: a variety of subject areas that include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. You will undertake practical activities and investigative experiments. You will also participate in group presentations and individual research. Higher Education and Access Higher National Certificates and Diplomas Working with Canterbury Christ Church University, East Kent College has developed an exciting range of Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma qualifications (HND). An HNC, a year-long, career-relevant qualification, is well respected as a qualification in its own right by employers, which could take you to the second year of a related university course. Although students have to fulfil the entry criteria, it is often ideal for those who might not otherwise get enough points to get into University. An HND is a two-year course which can be used to progress to the final year of a degree course.

Application 1.1 These Terms and Conditions shall apply to the provision of the services (‘Services’) by East Kent College of Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN (“College”) to you (“Student”). No other terms and conditions shall apply to the provision of services unless agreed upon in writing between the College and the Student. 1.2 To avoid doubt, the Terms and Conditions of Study (including all current published College Policies, Codes and Regulations) apply to all students, including those on placements and/or studying at off–campus locations. 1.3 Students should satisfy themselves from reading the available information that the particular course they have chosen meets their requirements before commencing the course.

2. Interpretation 2.1 A “business day” means any day other than a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday. 2.2 The headings in these Terms and Conditions are for convenience only and shall not affect their interpretation. 2.3 Words imparting the singular number shall include the plural and vice-versa.

3. Definitions 3.1 Every Student of the College, whether full–time or not, must enrol for each programme and pay the fees appropriate to their course of study at the College. 3.2 In all College documentation “Sponsor” is deemed to include Skills Funding Agency; Education Funding Agency; local authority/central government schemes; local enterprise companies; employers and training boards or agencies. 3.3 No person shall be deemed to be an enrolled Student unless they have completed and signed a College learning agreement and agreed to meet the liability for the relevant fees, where a Sponsor does not meet the liability on their behalf. 3.4 In signing the learning agreement the Student undertakes to observe these Terms and Conditions (including all current published College Policies, Codes and Regulations) and consents to the College obtaining, recording, holding, processing personal data including data of a sensitive nature. Students are responsible for informing the College of any changes to the information provided on enrolment.

4. Fees and Payment 4.1 The course fees (“Fees”) for the Services are set out in the prospectus. 4.2 In addition to the Fees, the College is entitled to recover from the Student reasonable incidental expenses for materials used and for third party goods and/ or services supplied in connection with the Services. 4.3 Liability for fees is incurred at enrolment and the College reserves the right to withdraw any offer for a Student who has not paid or arranged, to the satisfaction of the College, payment of fees within a reasonable time. 4.4 The Student shall pay the Fees due for the Services at or prior to enrolment or otherwise in accordance with any credit terms agreed between the College or their credit agency and the Student via an instalment plan. 4.5 If the Student fails to make payment within the period in clause 4.4, the College shall have the right to suspend the provision of the Services (where the provision of the Services is on-going) until payment is made to the satisfaction of the College. 4.6 The Student remains liable for any fees not paid by a Sponsor (see clause 3 above for definition of Sponsor)

4.7 If the Student fails to make payment within the period stated in clause 4.4 the College reserves the right to charge the Student interest at the rate of 8% per annum on the amount outstanding until payment is made in full.

6. Liability and Indemnity 6.1 If the College fails (or has failed) to perform the Services with reasonable care and skill it shall carry out all required remedial action at no additional cost to the Student.

4.8 Time for payment is of the essence of the contract between the College and the Student.

6.2 The College shall not be liable to the Student or be deemed to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions by reason of any delay in performing, or any failure to perform, any of the College’s obligations if such delay or failure is due to any cause beyond the College’s reasonable control.

4.9 Receipts for payment will be issued by the College only at the Student’s request. 4.10 All payments must be made in pounds sterling (£) unless otherwise agreed in writing between the College and the Student. 4.11 The College has a Fees Policy which can be found on the College’s website (www.eastkent.ac.uk) which also includes the College’s policy on refunds. Cancelling or Changing Contents of Courses 5.1 The College reserves the right not to run courses where the number of Students is considered insufficient or where resources are unavailable or to change the contents of a course where it is considered appropriate by the College to do so. 5.2 Where numbers of Students dictate, courses may be amalgamated so that they may comprise a number of subjects, including parts of the Student’s chosen subjects and parts of other related subjects. 5.3 All admission to courses is at the final discretion of the Principal. 5.4 The College reserves the right to refuse admission to any course because of restricted availability of facilities due to accommodation or teaching requirements or for any other reason which the College deems it necessary to do so. 5.5 On College programmes of more than one year duration, progression to Year 2 (and subsequent years) is dependent on satisfactory performance in the previous year.

6.3 The Student shall indemnify the College against all damages, costs, claims and expenses suffered by the College arising from any loss or damage to any equipment (including that belonging to third parties) caused by the Student. 6.4 The College does hold third party liability insurance which indemnifies the College with respect to claims from third parties, including Students, who have suffered injury, illness, loss or damage arising from the negligence of the College or its employees. However, if there is no negligence, no claim would be accepted by the College or its insurers. A copy of the College Public Liability insurance is displayed in the reception area of the College campus. 7. Force Majeure Neither party shall be liable for any failure nor is delay in performing their obligations where such failure or delay results from any cause that beyond the reasonable control of that party. Such causes include, but are not limited to: power failure, internet service provider failure, industrial action, civil unrest, fire, flood, storms, earthquakes, acts of terrorism, acts of war, governmental action or any other event that is beyond the control of the party in question. 8. Communications 8.1 All notices under these Terms and Conditions shall be in writing and signed by, or on behalf of, the party giving notice (or a duly authorised officer of that party). 8.2 Notices shall be deemed to have been duly given: (a) when delivered, if delivered by courier or other messenger (including registered mail) during the normal business hours of the recipient; (b) when sent, if transmitted by fax or email and a successful transmission report or return receipt is generated;

(c) on the fifth business day following mailing, if mailed by national ordinary mail; or on the tenth business day following mailing, if mailed by airmail. 8.3 All notices under these Terms and Conditions shall be addressed to the Corporate Services Office at East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN. 9. No Waiver 9.1 No waiver by the College of any breach of these Terms and Conditions by the Student shall be considered as a waiver of any subsequent breach of the same or any other provision. 9.2 No failure or delay on the part of either the College or the Student to exercise any right, power or privilege under these Terms and Conditions shall operate as a waiver of, nor shall any single or partial exercise of any such right, power or privilege preclude, any other or further exercise of any other right, power or privilege. 10. Severance In the event that one or more of these Terms and Conditions is found to be unlawful, invalid or otherwise unenforceable, that/those provisions shall be deemed severed from the remainder of these Terms and Conditions (which shall remain valid and enforceable). 11. Consumer Rights and Complaints Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall affect the Student’s statutory rights as a consumer. In the event the Student has a concern, the College Complaints Procedure is available on the College website (www.eastkent.ac.uk) or from the Corporate Services Office at East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN. 12. Law and Jurisdiction 12.1 These Terms and Conditions (including any non-contractual matters and obligations arising there from or associated therewith) shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of England and Wales. 12.2 Any dispute, controversy, proceedings or claim between the Student and the College relating to these Terms and Conditions (including any non-contractual matters and obligations arising there from or associated therewith) shall fall within the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
