INDUSTRY- ACADEMIA INTERACTION THROUGH PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS THANIKACHALAM VEDHATHIRI, BE., M TECH., PHD., MS., FIE., FIGS., FFIUCEE
OBJECTIVES • To explore the possibility of developing a linkage with the associations of the companies in the industrial hubs/ corridors. • To establish a development center in each hub for creating a knowledge based cooperative programs with the well performing state technical universities, autonomous engineering colleges and deemed universities. • To avail appropriate internships, offer industry relevant research projects and undertake many joint programs to evaluate and improve the curricula.
EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY AND INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS • European Industrial Research Management Association (EIRMA) • European Association of Universities (EUA) • PROTON- Organization to improve the existing knowledge • European Association of Research and Technology Organizations (EARTO) • Presented key insights into how effective research collaboration can be created
INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATIONS • Established by a set of companies to share their problems and jointly approach the government to get needed solution. • Focuses on the growth of the companies, products and technology upgradation. • Creates linkages with research and development organizations/engineering institutes.
THE NEED FOR AN INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION FOR EACH INDUSTRY • To facilitate cooperation with the companies and the engineering institutes. • To arrange resources from the companies for undertaking development projects. • To enable the successful completion of the development projects. • To create a long-term cooperation and collaboration between the industry and the well established educational institutes.
SOME OF THE WELL ESTABLISHED INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATIONS IN INDIA • Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI ) • Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) • Cement Manufacturers’ Association (CMA) • National Association of Software Companies (NASCOM) • Association of Chambers of Commerce (ASSOCHAM) • Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM) • Coimbatore District Small Scale Industries Association (CODISSIA)
GOALS OF INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATIONS
• Work to create and sustain an environment to the growth of industry in India. • Partnering industry and government alike through advising and consultative process.
CEMENT MANUFACTURING ASSOCIATION (C M A) • Modernized the cement manufacturing from 1994 to 1996 through World Bank loan in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry. • Developed four Reginal Training Centers in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. • National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) (Bhopal and Chennai) have own the project to train the trainers under the project • Further, NITTTRs have also assisted them by developing training packages to train their executives and employees.
ROLE PLAYED BY C M A • Getting the soft loan from the World Bank through the Ministry of Industry • Advertising the training projects and sending the letters of invitation • Evaluating the technical and financial bids • Selecting the best proposal • Getting the cooperation of the companies in the association for extending the facilities for project development • Evaluating the final product • Paying the project fees
LINKAGES CREATED BETWEEN THE INSTITUTES AND THE COMPANIES • Selected the trainees from various cement companies as per the schedule • Evaluated the training offered • Continued cooperation beyond the projects • Offered research themes for dissertation works of the postgraduate students • Provided free entry jointly supervised the dissertation works.
ASSISTANCE IN THE VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR TRAINING THE EMPLOYEES • CMA Informed the CEOs of the companies to extend the facilities and the people. • Assisted in the production of the videos. • Provided support by deputing the workers in the production units.
DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS FOR THE GOVERNMENT ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS UNDER WORLD BANK • International Development Agencies facilitate the cooperation. • They assist in preparing capacity development programs, training and development courses. • They are the linking agents. • They ensure proper evaluation of the technical and financial proposals. • They oversee the development, and maintain high standards.
ACHIEVEMENT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE COMPANIES • Industrial training of the teachers. • Undertaking the topics for dissertation of the post graduate students. • Offering advanced training to the employees of the companies. • Undertaking consultancy works. • Evaluating the research works of the graduate and postgraduate students. • Placing the students in the companies for getting relevant exposure to the current technology based manufacturing.
OUTCOME • 75 M.Tech (HRD) dissertations centered around the needs of the companies, government engineering departments. • Two PhD scholars completed interdisciplinary work from the industry. • Over 6000 polytechnic teachers have been trained in various industry based projects in about 400 companies. • Over 500 B.Tech Ed Trainees have been trained in the industry
BENEFITS TO THE CEMENT INDUSTRY • Around 100 middle level executives have been trained in the instructional design, safety, environmental protection and safe work practices. • Nearly 45 companies benefitted. • All the four Regional Training Centers benefitted in modernizing the human resource development.
•
