PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs) - Dr. V. Thanikachalam

Programme Educational Objectives • Play a key role in the curriculum, instructional design and evaluation process.

• Serve as guide for both teaching and evaluation. • Aid in selecting/ developing relevant instructional materials and aids.

• Help in selecting appropriate method of instructional planning.

• Assist in measuring and testing student learning progress.

• Help in constructing appropriate evaluation procedure.

• Guide in conveying instructional intent to employers and the public.

Achieving the Intended Course Outcomes Textbooks/ manuals/ workbooks/ job aids are to be developed based on the curriculum prescribed

• Teaching and evaluating procedures

are concerned with the retention of skills and competencies gained from the programme and later transfer to the field.

• What is the intended outcome?

Vision of the Institute • Vision is so general and so

idealistic that it is very difficult to achieve and to evaluate in a short-period

• It is prepared for planning

various programmes by the institute.

Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes • Course Objectives are viewed in terms of learning outcomes in the real life situation

• Concerned with the products of learning

rather than with the process of learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (Product)

Course Objectives • Establish direction for instructional planning by the faculty

• Enabling the achievement of planned performance by the learners

• Conditions under which performance is expected (Internal and External)

• Criteria of acceptance of the performance

• Cannot violate established norms and rules

Educational Mission • General aim or purpose of education

for a programme of study that is stated as a broad, long-range outcome to work after completion

• Mission statements are used primarily in policy making and general programme planning.

Course Objective for a Chapter/ Unit • An intended objective of instruction

that has been stated in terms performance which will result in a set of specific learning outcomes.

• After completion of all the units in a

course, the learner should achieve the intended outcome in that course.

• After successful completion of all the courses, it expected that the learner would be meeting the PEOs

PEO and Course Objectives • Generate one PEO for a programme and a set of course objectives for a unit of instruction • Split the PEO into a set of representative specific instructional objectives.

Learning Outcome • An intended outcome of

instruction that has been stated in terms of specific and observable student’s performance in a real life situation

A Set of Specific Learning Outcomes Describes a Portion of Performance that Learners will be able to Exhibit when They have Achieved A Set of Specific Instructional Objectives.

Course Learning Outcomes Also called • Specific objectives. • Smart objectives. • Behavioral objectives. • Measurable objectives.

Student Performance • Any measurable, or observable, student response in the cognitive, affective, or psychomotor domain that is a result of learning.

Ultimate Versus Immediate Objectives Ultimate objectives are those concerned with typical performance of individuals in the actual situations/ real life which they will face in the future.

Immediate Objectives Performance of the Learners soon after the completion of the instruction like getting excellent scores and geting high paying jobs.

Stating Course/ instructional Objectives • The final list of objectives for a course or unit should include all important learning outcomes that are expected in the job specfication.

• Should be stated in a manner that

clearly conveys what students have to perform at the end of the learning experiences.

Stating the Specific Instructional Objectives • State each specific instructional

objective as an intended learning outcome. (Students terminal performance)

• State each objective with a verb. • Begin each objective to include only one learning outcome.

• State each objective at the proper level of acceptance

State a set of specific instructional objectives for a course in engineering

Validate the Written Objectives

• Check with a representative of an employer
