Foreword

Dear Friends I would like to thank you for your interest in the Tharawat Family Business Forum. Tharawat was founded by several families from all over the Middle East and North Africa to respond to a need for more exchange and dialogue. From the cornershop, run by two brothers, to the family-owned multi-national conglomerate – the fact is that family businesses are the commercial backbones of our region. Their long-term strategies and strong bond with society and all their stakeholders makes them invaluable assets in any high growth economy. At Tharawat we believe in the importance of a strong, independent private sector driven support system. Business families can meet amongst peers, exchange thoughts and create new opportunities. Our dedicated membership base and our strong partners enable us to develop our vision and go forward in our strive to serve our business community. The responsibility to create a better future for the generations to come lies in our hands! Dr. Hischam El Agamy Founder and Executive Director Tharawat Family Business Forum

Who we are

About the Tharawat Family Business Forum The Tharawat Family Business Forum was founded in 2006 as an independent, non-profit, private sector business network for Arabian family-owned companies. With around 80%* of businesses in the Arab world being family-owned, their sustainability and growth is crucial for the region and its economy. Tharawat supports the family business community by providing educational programs, thought leadership, networking opportunities, and a platform for the inter-generational and inter-regional exchange of knowledge and experience. The Tharawat Family Business Forum is an exclusive membership organisation, with activities both for its members, as well as for the wider business community. As a membership organisation, it is the members of Tharawat that drive its activities. Our members and friends share the vision to support the community and contribute to the regional economy through education, exchange, and dialogue. * Number is an estimate from various sources.

National Family Business Associations – Our Partners The Tharawat Family Business Forum welcomes the creation of national family business associations throughout the Arab region. As a regional association, Tharawat’s main goal is the building of a strong, connected family business community in the Arab world with a focus on family business sustainability beyond several generations. Therefore, we strongly encourage and support the creation of independent national family business associations that are non-profit, bottom-up private sector initiatives with non-commercial goals such as education, research, advocacy, business networking and the overall support of family-owned businesses in the Arab region. Our partnerships with such organisations are at the core of our long-term vision for family businesses in our region.
