Mon Vie Photographique Portraits de l'Humanité

A Renaissance of Caffenol Re-printings This volume is a short collection of images selected from my photographic works. I was recently inspired to revisit analogue film and print using homemade developers derived from plant materials containing caffeic acids; (commonly referred to as, Caffenol). The majority of images in this volume are newly printed, or reprinted, using a variety of different plant sourced developers. The majority of these images have been printed on vintage 40 year old expired, and newer photographic papers. These images were captured using a variety of new and expired 35mm film, 6x9 medium format 120 film, 4x5 large format film, Polaroid instant film, and paper negatives up to 8x10in. I used a variety of commercial and improvised analogue cameras, with lens arrays and pinhole applications. I have also made use of digital imagery via a simple DSLR camera and several other electronic image capture devices. Direct contact prints from negatives were used wherever possible, to preserve fine detail. All of the monochrome photographic prints in this volume were created using primitive and improvised darkroom equipment and techniques.

Acknowledgements I would not have returned to explore film photography developing and printing without the generosity and encouragement of the Artist, Jeffry Sass. Some of the best prints I’ve made are on expired papers which I received from him. It was through his work that I became familiar with coffee based Caffenol developers. My interest in exploring large format pinhole applications was entirely inspired by Jeff Sass’ work. I must also acknowledge all of the subjects of my photography. Without their open acceptance of my fixation, I would never have had the opportunity to capture any meaningful images.

Traversing Infinity (from health to non-existence) *Installation piece with photographic accompaniments

Page

James T. Randall, 2015

111

Structure, physical order, and strength slowly draw downwards condensed and compressed, coalescing into the twisted depersonalisation of chronic degenerative disability, eventually streaming out as a dissolution of spreading alluvial formlessness bearing little semblance to order or function. This piece was realised as I struggled through a dream state. The wrapping and twisting of the bed sheet symbolises the physical restriction of disability strangling joy from life. It recalls the early morning feeling of being caught up in the bed clothes as your brain struggles to awaken and regain physical control. There is an implied falling effect as that is one of the marked sensations experienced in the extremities as they gradually lose strength and function. The installation also appears as if it is gradually slipping downwards, mimicking the once well-formed and differentiated striated fibres of voluntary muscles seceding. In the degenerative process the patient “becomes” their disability in an inescapable duality represented allegorically by the crutch centrepiece. The critical moment of transformation from order to entropy occurs at the twisted onset of disability. The title plays on the suitability of the sheet in this analogy to symbolise infinity’s yinyang flux of energy ebb and flow – to, and from, order through entropy. The unused electrical outlet symbolises technology’s inability to intervene towards solving the inevitable failing of the human condition. The deeply shadowed top lighting warns of the encroaching twilight of life drawing rapidly to a conclusion.

Developers: All developers used were homemade from basic store-bought ingredients. The developers utilise caffeic acid from plant materials. Caffeic acid is present in most plants, not just those containing caffeine. Combining caffeic acids with a ph:base (sodium carbonate) produces phenol alcohol esters and phenylated benzoic compounds which act as a staining photographic developer for silver sensitised films and papers, and is commonly referred to as Caffenol. Ascorbic acid / ascorbate (vitamin C) is added as an anti-oxidant preservative to extend the useful life of the developer. Potassium Iodine (in table salt) is added to act as an ionising stabiliser, which increases the speed of the developer. The following mix is perfect for developing film and acts as a rapid developer for paper. Slowing the speed of development, by increasing the dilution (up to 1:1) or reducing the amount of sodium carbonate, allows for increased staining. Fiber coated papers stain quicker than resin coated papers. The Caffenol-CM(+i) [standard recipe] is: 500ml water, 27gr sodium carbonate, [18-21gr] [plant material], 8gr ascorbic acid, 5gr iodised salt.
