I started in industrial real estate in 1981 with MJ Davis Corporate Group as a Cadet on a Trainee Programme instigated by the late Malcolm Davis. Malcolm was a visionary who first re-zoned, subdivided and developed a large portion of Sydney’s Wetherill Park Industrial Precinct and who also first brought ‘tilt-built’ (or concrete panel) warehouse construction to Australia. Do you remember your first deal? Absolutely, it was the leasing of a very small office warehouse in the inner western suburbs of Adelaide where the rental was $15,000 per annum. You’ve got to start somewhere! What has been your most interesting/challenging project to date?

There have been many! One that stands out whilst we have been running Leedwell was the sale of a Convent. The property is located in one of Adelaide’s premier gateway regions and attracted interest from far and wide. Whilst I am an industrial property specialist, I was able to utilise years of commercial negotiation and property experience to position and sell the asset, despite many rumours of ghosts, tunnels under ground to the local male convent across the road and other weird and wonderful stories. What changes/trends are you currently seeing in the Australian industrial and commercial property market? One of the trends we are seeing relates to the current economic conditions where low interest rates are driving many tenants, who are coming to the end of their lease, to consider purchasing premises in order to benefit from the financial advantages. So leasing transactions have reduced in our market whilst vacant possession sales have increased.

Originally through conversations with Matt Richards from Scan Property in Queensland. Matt had been seeking like-minded independent industrial/ commercial agents that could network nationally. We all caught up for a chat in Parramatta in 2014 and it was pretty evident after having a meeting that we had a group of industrial agents who were like-minded with the right mix of ethics and energy to make the partnership work. To date I think it’s been a pretty successful year and a half. We’re all focused on what we can deliver to each other. There have been some great successes for the group in referring and creating deals, as well as some significant opportunities that we’re all working on together at the moment. What we hope to create through ICP is an opportunity for each of our clients to have that national platform for investment and business growth. It is critical that we each now have trusted sources in other states to talk to, rather than blindly referring them to unknown agents. We’ve been really pleased at how each of our partners have taken on small or large leads and have treated them like we would ourselves and hopefully we’ve reciprocated that here.
