B L OSSO M SPRING SUMMER 18 COLLECTION
2008 -2018
blossom flower, bloom, floweret b lossoming, be in flower, flourish, develop, thrive, prosper, come to fruition
Blossom is the name of this summer collection for so many reasons. I love being a mother. It’s made me feel complete, truly content. It’s the happiest and most productive time of my life. I’ve spent the last year planning a garden. It takes patience, research and time. None of these things I have ever been very good at. I’ve learnt to wait for the right moment, listen to the earth, follow the seasons. Finally it’s been ten years since my first collection. It only feels like yesterday. All the people I’ve met, all the things I’ve learnt, mainly the hard way. I cannot believe ten years on that this is what I do. And feel so lucky I love what I do and other people seem to love it as well. And that some of you reading this have been along for almost all of the bumpy but fun ride.

TEN YEARS. 2008-2018 2010
Cisco one of my favourite models (owner of the ‘Slow’ in Bali) wears classic stripes complemented by embroideries, ribbon and lace on our local Tamarama Beach.
2008
All the same favourites stripes, florals, broderie, bold colours and feminine shape.
2009
More ruffles and colour. A lot of the names all describe life in Sydney at that time “See you at the C.Y.C”
SS - THE SHELLSEEKERS COLLECTION Inspired by the Rosamund Pilcher novel and the glamourous European set, this range was shot at an incredible house overlooking Gordon’s Bay. Cisco again was the perfect model for this shoot.
2015
SS - 8 ORLA BARDOT This range is inspired by a small fishing village not far out of Rio de Janeiro, I had just visited. We shot at the recently opened famous Watsons Bay Hotel so new to Sydney and with the best fit out. Gorgeous French model Sophie Lecaureux was perfect as our Bardot muse who fled to the town in Brazil to hide out in the 60’s.
2016
AW - ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL Inspired by my family farm. We had just moved back to Victoria and loved using Lynda Gardeners perfect house who is famous for her eclectic home styling and her gorgeous dog. The super sweet Cassie Lapthorne, from Mildura signed to modelling super agency IMG after this shoot.
AW - SPORT OF KINGS As my family breed racehorses this was a special theme and even more so to shoot at the now no longer Inglis Stables in Randwick Sydney. We had a horse, a pregnant belly, thunder, lightning and it was chaos but we got some very beautiful images.
COMING HOME At the end of 2015 while designing this collection we moved back to South Australia – our home. Surrounded by rolling hills, the smell of freshly cut hay, grazing sheep, sunsets over the lake and most importantly, family. With 4am starts and unbearable heat to contend with, this shoot presented many challenges. But, I wouldn’t change it for the anything Home Sweet Home x

This shoot was shot at my home to evoke the relaxed ambience of a coastal small village. Living in the ‘Bondi Bubble’ was a bit like that back then!
trees on a perfect summer evening, and dapples on horses. The beautiful Annabella Barbar became on overnight sensation soon after this shoot.
BON IVER 2012 Bon Iver means good winter… I had just been to see Bon Iver at the Opera House. A lot of the dresses were named after racehorses so of course our best seller, was the Black Caviar dress.
2014
AW - THE LIMESTONECAST We shot with super stylist Sophie Thé on a boat with gorgeous Brazilian model Janini Milet. Having recently moved to Robe, I was inspired by the traditional colours of the fishing port, stunning Guichen Bay and the early 1800’s tiny cottages.
2013
Inspired by the South American Gauchos after a trip to Buenos Aires, inspired by their strong polo scene, chic but ethnic saddlery stores.

AW - STORM BOY Our photoshoot for winter was my favourite to date as it was shot only twenty minutes from home and so many locals helped us make this shoot special.
2017
AW - FAZENDA Last trip to Brazil we visited the mountains and discovered the rural side of Brazil with not a beach in sight. We tried to re capture the simple rustic life in the famous Barossa Valley at the very special Hutton Vale Farm. Chooks, pigs, dogs, children, home cooked and home grown food all day, a roaring open fire made this one of the most enjoyable shoots to date.
I GO TO RIO Ilona Novacek was perfect for this collection I had used her in the Gauchoes Collection. The Adelaide Botanic Gardens somehow managed to look just like Brazil. Thank you to the special Brazilian stylist @brigadeirocho who helped me style this shoot using a lot of Brazilian jewellery we had so much fun with it.

THE FIRSTS.
My first office came to life while living in
a share house in North Bondi. After spending hours tidying up the garage (my new ‘office’), my flatmate decided it was a great space to have drinks and chat to me while I was designing, not quite the zen space I imagined. I then moved to another share house, freezing and rotten but in a prime position overlooking Tamarama beach. The garage was tiny and powerless but right on the infamous Wonderland Avenue. I would pack my orders then run down a steep flight of moss ridden broken steps to my bedroom to print off invoices and then all the way back to the garage. I have memories of intense heat, freezing cold and the insane dust storm in 2009 that covered all the stock in inches of red dirt. Even though my Mum hates the heat, she would come all the way from the farm to Sydney to help pack orders. She would work non-stop getting coffees, opening, labelling and carrying boxes one by one along a tiny track into my house. I still owe her.
My first photoshoot still makes me laugh. I booked a model and asked her to come with her makeup done. She forgot, so we ran to the chemist and used their testers to get her camera ready. My friend was the in-house product photographer for a major magazine and we squeezed her into a photo booth normally used for shooting makeup and packets of chips and off we went. I printed the whole collection on my printer at home and then walked into shops in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide trying to sell my range.
There is nothing more humbling than cold calling with your own collection, weakly smiling and saying thankyou to the clipped tones of a shop owner who flicks through your lookbook and says no.
My first time to India, I had prided myself for years on how well travelled and worldly I thought I was, but the minute I landed in India I was in shock. Awe struck, amazed and saddened but so inspired by this incredible culture and country. My Dad came with me and after making him eat street food he lost ten kilos in ten days and had to spend the rest of his time watching the cricket in our hotel. I hardly slept, scouring the fabric markets daily, seeing as much as I could and visiting my supplier down a tiny rubbish ridden alley with the occasional cow plonked in the middle. Their minute office had no air conditioning, intense humidity, a lot of smiling and enthusiastic head nodding but not a lot of understanding. My Dad perched in the corner on a tiny stool, white faced jet lagged and with Delhi belly. He still talks about this trip to this day with a very different slant to the tale and without the same level of enthusiasm. I still cannot believe my madness in accepting a lift on the back of a motorbike to go and look at some silks, winding my way into the depths of Delhi. Haggling vendors in the Thieves Market for hours and then getting lost in the dust and endless alleys. Getting sworn at by an old man in the Gandhi fabric market for wearing a sleeveless top, as I didn’t know that this was so
rude and against their culture. Back then I rarely saw another Westerner. I would then go onto the same routine in China. Hours and hours in cars on crazy Chinese highways with my chainsmoking supplier taking me into parts of China I had never heard of. Endless cups of green tea and very, very strange food. I would often try not to think about the fact that if anything happened, no one knew where I was.
My first shop I moved from my garage
in Tamarama to a share office in Bondi where I had to pack orders at night so as not to disturb the rest of the office. Mountains of stock would arrive and I would endure the hell of trying to squeeze it all into my hatchback, park and carry stock down a busy Bondi street then run back to beat the parking inspectors. I broke the vastly expensive marble boardroom table by stacking boxes on top much to my horror even more when I found out it cost over ten thousand dollars and weighed nearly a tonne. It became really, really hard, expensive and plain exhausting. So I packed up and planned a trip to Robe in South Australia. I ended up staying for six months while during a chance conversation, I got offered the perfect shop space. Finally I felt like I could breathe again. Originally an old butcher and then a hairdresser, the shop is so tiny. I know many customers by name who love our sample and end of season bargain sales as much as I love tinkering with it. It’s a little but special part of the business.
My first employee. After Robe I jumped
back to Barwon Heads as I needed the support of the only person I could think of to help me with the increasingly important workload of production and fits. I remember being heavily pregnant, packing orders by day and then driving up and down the highway to Melbourne to do fittings after hours, as that was the only time she could see me. Then two months before having a baby we were asked to move out of our riverside rental. An initial disaster but ultimately like it was all meant to be. I had been thinking about it for years, and it forced my hand to move home to South Australia. Now finally life is easier, and it’s fun again. Almost the minute I moved home after years of trying to find the perfect person to help I found them. Kirsty who manages the office from an old dairy on the farm surrounded by roos, lambs and family. Catherine who helps with production in Adelaide with our children screaming around the backyard while we pin, sketch and measure. I divide my time between both locations depending on what I need and with these two on board plus my family and old friends, life is better than it’s ever been. Cheers, to another ten years, Love
A big thank you to all at Heronswood and the Diggers Club. We sourced Australia to find a garden in bloom during one of the hottest summer months. Overlooking the brilliant turquoise sea we were surrounded by intense green, gorgeous scent, the most colourful flowers and butterflies. We dined on freshly picked vegetables from the garden and stepped through the beach boxes framed by seaside daises onto the sand. I don’t think I’ve ever found a prettier or more perfect location. It was worth the hunt and days in the car.
