Sampling a thought Designers are often called to approach a wide variety of projects. Projects while varying, still share the common practice of pulling together elements to create narratives through design. Much like a chef pulling together the right blend of ingredients and spices; or a DJ blending together the right combination of record samples, time is used by both to establish a well crafted piece. The narrative and curration of these elementary samples play key roles in creating an overall experience. The piece should be a narrative an audience can resonate with.

Project — First Friday Discipline — Brand + Identity Instructor — Todd Hedgpeth Course — Strategies for Branding

-

Brief

Based on the First Friday art experience in Oakland , Ca, First Friday combines local art, music, and food into a street festival. The street festival occurs every first friday of the month where artists and other vendors from all backgrounds come to share their work and ideas. The goal is to foster community building and engagement through the arts. The task for this project was to create a brand and identity system to reflect the goals and values of First Friday.

Approach

Since First Friday began with a community of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) artists and galleries, I took a look at an art medium known as wheat pasting. This medium is used to to apply posters and flyers onto public walls. Over time what’s left is a surface covered with layers of messages and images. Representative of of this medium, I wanted to use this as treatment to highlight the collection of ideas and shared messages all in one environment. “More Than 1 Layer” plays off the idea of First Friday being on the 1st Friday of each month.

Kala Rice Wine

Overview

➀●➂➃➄➅➆➇➈

Project — Kala Rice Wine Discipline — Packaging Design Instructor — Christine George Course — Packaging Design 3

-

Brief

We were asked to conceptualize a spirit brand, give it a story and identity through packaging design. To celebrate my roots, I began with a spirit found in Cambodia. The alcoholic beverage of rice wine also known as “srah sohl”, comes to no surprise, as it is cheap to make and a staple of the country. Rice wine is still considered a home made luxury and has yet to be wideley marketed within the country. My conceptual spirit brand, Kala Rice Wine, seeks to establish itself in a new market.

Approach

Cambodia has a rich ristory and known to have the largest historical hindu temple in the world including Angkor Wat. The temples are embellished with stone carvings, telling the story of the once thriving empire and mythology. I wanted to highlight Cambodia’s heritage through treatments that reflect the carvings while still maintaining a contemporary voice for the new market within restaurants.

ka·la / kälä / In Khmer temple architecture, the kala serves as a common decorative element on lintels, tympana and walls. The monster is symbolic of time in its all-devouring aspect and associated with the destructive side of the god Siva. The kalas of Angkor represent the Khmer civilization’s adoption into its decorative iconography of elements derived from long forgotten primitive antecedents.

Project — Pilot Discipline — Visual System Instructor — Eszter Clark Course — Visual Systems 2

-

Brief

The task was to select an existing corporate brand to create a promotional material to highlight one of their products. I chose one of my favorite brand of pens and markers, Pilot.

Approach

I chose Pilot’s jumbo marker “Super Color” to highlight it’s bold use, fluid and deep sustainable ink pigment. Through the promotional material, I wanted to inspire audiences to be bold through action, go beyond the comfort zone, and stand up for what they believe in with conviction, which would parallel the traits of Pilot’s marker.

Brief

For this project, we were asked to select an existing spirit brand and redesign the original packaging design. The objective was broken into two redesigns: Evolutionary redesign + Revolutionary redesign. I chose Wild Turkey Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey for this project.

Approach

Select proprietary design elements from the original bottle label and reapply them using different hierarchal formats for the Evolutionary redesign. For the Revolutionary redesign, I established what were brand equity components and create an entirely new design.

Project — 65+ MPH Discipline — Typography Instructor — Ariel Grey Course — Typography 4

-

Brief

We were asked to bring together an idea for the future of typography. Conceptualize a conference that will include a promotional book along with other collateral to highlight this multi-day conference. My interest with urban development gave me the opportunity to conceptualize how we will absorb information through typography, specifically in relation to highways. How do we look at the future of urban develoment and its affect on our physical landscape. How will information on roads present themselves?

Approach

Highlight what are the driving components into information design with a light view into the urban development field. In 65+ MPH, I bring up current typographic systems, methods, and the role they play into a driver’s relationship between automobile and road.

NVM

Overview

➀➁➂➃➄●➆➇

Project — NVM Discipline — Branding + Exhibit Collaboration — Macro Waves Field — Art Exhibit

-

Brief

Oakland based art collective, Macro Waves, conceptualized and produced an immersive art exhibit, “NVM”, or (never-mind). The concept of the exhibit focused on bringing attention to mental health and its role within the current internet age. The the gallery where the exhibition took place was seperated into a black section to represent cortisol and white to represent seratonin. The task was to create marketing, branding, and other collateral materials for the show that would embody the exhibit’s key components and theme.

Approach

I brought in a treatment known as the Tengram tile first created in China as a puzzle. The tengram was then used as a psychology tool during mental health studies. Since this exhibition focused on the stigma of mental health, I used the Tengram tiles as a treatment to communicate being bound within a mental box. This also gave an opportunity to rearrange the tiles to represent breaking beyond those confinements of a mental box.

Overview

Project — Pneuma Discipline — Packaging Design Instructor — Tom McNulty Course — Packaging Design 4

-

Brief

This was a group project with the objective of creating packaging for sub brands, in which would all fall under one mother brand. As part of the mother brand, Pneuma took on the role as one of the sub brands, integrating both leisure and athletic wear. For this project, we were asked to design a variety of products that were unified by the sub brand’s voice.

Approach

I used bold elements to highlight the athletic lifestyle persona. Red and Blue primary colors were used to create infusion and fluidity, both having a strong prescence. The typography establishes itself through a utilitarian treatment in consideration of product placement within store shelves and alongside competitors brands.

Project — Uphill Race Discipline — Packaging Design Instructor — Kristine George Course — Packaging Design 3

-

Brief

For this project, we were asked to design packaging for a board game, complete set with game pieces, box packaging, and playing cards. The concept was to either select a current game and rebrand it, or create an entirely new game. I chose to create an entirely new game which targeted an audience ages 6 years and up.
