NWMS chats with Legends of Rock chorus director Paul Caldwell

The Seattle Women’s Chorus regales us with “Legends of Rock,” celebrating female voices in the music at least as far back as Tina Turner, at least as far forward as Florence Welch. That’s Sunday, April 28th, at Benaroya Hall, featuring Aeysha “Musicbox” Brooks and special guest Sarah Rudinoff. Chorus director Paul Caldwell was kind enough to take a few questions.

Listen to "Low Resolution" album by The Perceptionists on Bandcamp The Perceptionists returned last year with their first new group album in years. The official release led to a tour and even an appearance on NPR's "Tiny Desk Concert" with a live band. But for 2018, they wanted to rough the edges up and revisit it. Enter Paten Locke. Paten had produced a pair of tracks on the original record that were fan favorites, so he seemed like a natural choice to rework 7 of the albums best tracks. On top of that, Paten, Mr. Lif and Akrobatik created an entirely fresh joint titled "Bait." The result is "Low Resolution" an 8 track long record that brings "Resolution" into a completely different light.

Listen to "The Wildest Rose" album by Odette Michell on Bandcamp 'The Wildest Rose' is the enchanting full length debut album from English folk singer-songwriter Odette Michell. Featuring musical contributions from Phil Beer (Show of Hands) and Toby Shaer (Cara Dillon, Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys).

Listen to "Late Bloomer" album by Jeremy Jones on Bandcamp

Indiana-bred, LA-based artist and producer Jeremy Jones grew up in a deeply musical community, but one that sounded very different than the radio-ready American R&B of his debut mixtape 'Late Bloomer', out May 31st on Darling Recordings. In Jeremy's mother's house mainstream music was forbidden; the devout, Jamaican family instead listened to gospel music and sang in church. Jeremy found his creative outlet in the orchestra, studying viola performance in college, before moving to Los Angeles with his indie rock band. It's been quite the journey.

Stream & Purchase "Look What This World Did To Us" album by Chris Orrick (Hip Hop)

“Look What This World Did To Us.” The command is rhetorical. You’re already aware of the echo, the generational discontent and alienation, the whispered and denied calls for absolution. No need to look around, just check your bank account and sigh —or echo Biggie and scream, “fuck the world.” .

Stream & Purchase "The Fix" album by Jack Jones (Hip Hop)

Bringing together production and vocals from the US & UK Soundsci's Audessey brings it home with his Jack Jones reality . Stream & Purchase "Urban Love Letters" EP by Roszunn (R&B) Roszunn's continues and concludes the love story from his latest album Urban.

(Album Review by Jhantu Randall) A few months back I reviewed an album by a collective that went by Swordscool, intrigued by their cinematic sound I was happy to be sent a link to one of the groups members solo EP. Suntonio Bandanaz was the one in that project that grabbed my attention from the first initial listen so to hear him on his new release I was both drawn in and skeptical. The overall production was what gave me the reaction it did so I was worried that I might go into this one already expecting some kind of comparison and hearing everything from that framing, but from the first track, this one built upon what the previous work had already created .

Listen to "Alba" album by Lara Vizuete on Bandcamp After studying the ‘New York Jazz Master of Music’ in Groningen (The Netherlands) and New York, Lara Vizuete embarks on a new project that emerged from her Master’s Research in Groningen. This first album is based on the ‘ Filin’ style. ‘Filin' is an artistic movement that arose in the 1940’s in La Habana (Cuba) and it meant the development of Bolero style influenced by Jazz

music. ‘Alba’ brings a repertoire formed by arrangements and original compositions in ‘ filin’ style with a modern jazz approach.

Broke & Bummy (Article by Jhantu Randall)

In the rap scene, both local and national, braggadocios bars and stories that are so fabricated the only truth is the silhouette which show are routinely accepted by the listeners. Unable to differentiate between what’s genuine and what’s fake , the public falls into a dichotomy of debating lack luster talent. I say that to say this, even though everything seems to be tren ding that way at the moment, it doesn’t mean that’s what every artist is doing. A very select few have stuck to their plans and visions without wavering and found a way to build another step towards their success, all on their own terms! These are the best words that can be used when it comes to describing the work ethic and just raw ambition of Trevionne Phillips. I had come across a teaser for his new single “Broke & Bummy.” It struck my interest because I had seen Trevionne perform heavily a few years ago, a show at Tony V’s in Everett will always be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this. It was back then when I saw the way Tre seemed to effortlessly own the stage while connecting with any audience regardless of it s size. Many people can claim to be rappers, every city is full of people using that moniker in some way, but what separates the run of the mill rapper with an actual artist who is viable? Songwriting. By that I don’t mean just clever verses but rather hooks and choruses that flow together and meld itself with the beat at just the right moment. When done right you can get away with damn near anything because no matter what, if somethings hot then tha t’s just what it is. Now out of a smaller group who can consider themselves songwriters, very few actually use it to elevate them selves to a position where it can take them to other places, fact is most local artists stay local for whatever reason, but those who i nvest in themselves fully more often than not find a way to complete another piece in their overall vision .

‘Lowkey’ Continues to Provide a Soundtrack to the Struggle (Album Review by Jhantu Randall)

Let’s be honest, if I said conscious rapper or political hip -hop, a half Iraqi half English man would be the last thing that would come to your mind. I bring this up not only to inform you of an artist who is undoubtedly one of the sharpest minds and arguably one of the most vicious on the mic. Ultimately, with all that talent he’s the best you’ve never heard of. Becoming a fan of this man back when I first heard him in 2011, I was intrigued by the brashness of his lyrics. First hearing him on a song called “Voice of the Voiceless” with Immortal Technique, I was shocked and held in awe when I heard his first l ines, “From the West 10 to the West Bank, I write righteous rhymes in my right as I wrestle the devil with my left hand. Never work ed for a Zionist, Never been a yes man, My art is like Rembrandt painting pictures of death camps.” For someone to even address Palest ine or focus on issues and histories spanning Africa through the middle east and even touching on south Asia, Australia and speaking on Tasmania shows how global hip hop has become, especially as an outlet for people who’s voices have been stripped otherwise . After listening to his first album, “Soundtrack to the Struggle” 2011, I had anticipated much more to follow, then suddenly he seemed to disappear from the scene. Kareem Dennis, his given name, removed himself from the industry and attended Universi ty, where over the next 10 years he has worked on a PHD in History. Rumors of being arrested and blackballed by the industry for his politics is hinted on by the man himself, but giving little teasers around 2017 I had a feeling he’s be returning although an other album seemed like wishful thinking. Then the tragedy of the Grenfell tower fire occurred. Lowkey being a resident of that are a tried to help along with countless others but ultimately used his most powerful weapon in the midst of the trauma…his voice and pen . “Ghosts of Grenfell” his a deep and somber eulogy to all victims of that day, using survivors from the fire as participants i n the video its Lowkey himself who doesn’t appear which adds to its effect. From there came “Children of Diaspora” followed by “Ahmed” wh ich is

hard to view with the lyrics combined with the images then closing out with a Jeff Dunham clip which blatantly shows the west ern view of brushing the bigger issue off with an arrogant attitude. “Lords of War” tells a story from the perspective of a drone strike from the perspective of both the child victim/target to the man behind the screen controlling it with singer Kaia creating a chorus that is haunting. Other freestyles turned themselves into songs that are extremely well produced.
