Throughout the past couple years almost every show, every stage and every event, I’ve come to see Zooited Gang grace the stage and solidify their name. From performing in venues that they hosted to just seeing them from the perspective as a fan, I can’t stress enough that they bring something different to the scene. With their set playlist I’ve witnessed them all grab the mic and set the place ablaze! Each performance has raised the bar for the other acts, because not only does Zooited Gang know who they are as a collective, they know who they are as individual artists. Always raising the energy of the crowd like a conductor, they know they're brand lies in the business that they run. Whether its merchandise, recording or other types of production, when they say they live hip hop, they don’t need to speak it their actions do all the necessary talking. Read More…

The Lioness is Breaking In
I
Jhantu Randall
n hip hop, w e’re inundated w ith stories,
allegories , and fables of dealing, street economics, and torturous tales of redemption. A ll of it is intriguing as a premis e, but the one thing it all has in common is, it is given through a mans perspective. Not to be too divisive, but in actuality s ome of these female emcees have more gripping s tories to tell in this era. I personally love any artis t w ho puts themselves out there, but at some point w hen the arena is run by predominately one gender, it’s refreshing to hear the point of view from someone w ho you may have initially overlooked. That’s w here this story begins ... Dubitation Lioness is rather unassuming among the bills I’ve s een her on. Like a true student of rap, she know s her goal at every show and comes w ith the determination to make it happen regardless of any unforeseen event w hich may occur. W hile keeping her immediate circle very close -knit, she surrounds herself w ith jus t enough people to keep her level in an environment w here the energy is unpredictable. Every time s he grabs the mic and spits a few bars, she has the audience completely focused on her w hile she introduces hers elf through her rhymes. In a teas er for her new video, Hard to Find, appearing under the name Lady Boss and featuring T.N.F. she manages to s harpen her delivery w hile playing w ith the inflection in her voice about every fourth bar. The video opens w ith a late night meeting w here Lady Boss gets a text on her phone and heads for the door. Emerging from the s hadows s he approaches a car before the video transitions to her w earing a w hite jacket standing in front of a pearl w hite range and letting loose! This is w here you hear the bars s ync w ith the baseline and really start to feel the energy that the track produces.
James Brow n famously sang, “It’s a mans w orld” and in hip hop this concept is almost celebrated on a hyper level, but w hen a female emcee can rock the s tage and flip a verses flow and structure effortlessly it definitely makes those w ho are really listening pay clos e attention. In selling a fantasy in song, it almos t gives w omen more room to play but the criticism s eems to be harsher in response. It’s this precise reas on that I pay extra attention to females w ho are nice w ith their rhymes. In my mind, I try to see the story behind w hat they are telling. It’s because of this that I am draw n to those w ho can openly be more braggadocios. It is more of a treat for the listener, but I hear a fiery passion at the root of it. It’s through lines like “Throw it at me, no lip/Lady Boss up in this bitch/Running Circles around these broke niggas/I’ve been out here getting chips” there's something deeper that fuels it. Stay tuned for more as Lady Boss is using the current platforms available to w rite her story and give you the raw vers ion of it in her ow n voice.

It would be an understatement to say that the acts of division have been blatantly increasing and the people are falling right in line with it. Through the media’s reporting, we’re being told there’s an invasion just beyond the southern border, an invasion of Central Americans who are fleeing unspeakable violence in their home lands because at this point, their only choices in life appear to be death and death. Either hunted down and murdered by cartels if they refuse to join or starved to death as they suffered a perilous journey only to be met with a fence and armed soldiers blocking them from reaching a port of entry. Going to a port of entry to seek asylum is in fact a legal way of immigrating, but again we have been so divided on this issue, I fear nothing will ever be done to actually fix it unless it includes some sort of horrific removal of an entire group of people just to feed our country’s endless lust for kicking the other when they're already down and

desperate!
Now I don’t claim to be an expert on foreign policy or immigration, but I bring it up as a backdrop to show how we as a society have fallen so far from that place were told we were as children. I look at immigration from a human perspective, meaning that I look at it through the eyes of those who are running. Running towards a life that is from this moment on, completely unsure and foreign for them. Not to say that we should scrap policy altogether, we do need a common sense enforcement, but maybe it’s time to sit down and finally make the policy match the creed which every claims inspired it. Give me your tired, your hungry and your poor has always been met with opposition to some degree, but lately its met with a locked door accompanied by a chorus of scorn. Continue reading…

Jhantu Randall reviews "Beyond Clouds" album by IMAGINE ALBUM REVIEW ARTIST
BEYOND CLOUDS HIP HOP IMAGINE (SGV) JHANTU RANDALL LOCAL ARTIST LOCAL MUSIC
MUSIC PRODUCTION RAPPER With a name like Imagine and a title of “Beyond Clouds,” I have to admit that my interest was definitely peaked but I really wasn't sure what to expect. This song could have been either transcendent or colluded, distorted and disconnected. With that being said, sonically, the production was very pleasing, but lyrically, I was bracing myself. After the initial shock of Imagine’s vocal tone, I began to fall into the words he was speaking and the feeling he was reflecting upon. Starting with a sound that is a mixture of horns and drum patterns that leave you feeling vibrant, its the vocals of the artist himself who makes the biggest first impression. It may take a few listens to get used to his sound but once you do, you’ll really appreciate the attention to detail, especially in the aspects of wordplay and flow. A song to zone out to in a session, its arrangement has you running through your mind, contemplating random thoughts and connecting with the tale Imagination is weaving. Imagination. What a high bar to set for yourself as the name holds endless possibilities accompanied by quick consequences if you don’t manage to create an atmosphere. Judging off this song alone, Imagination not only lives but thrives within this world that exists for 4:03.
While it’s Imagination’s verse structure and rhyme schemes create a world it’s The Homegirl Monie’s voice that breathe the elements of life that give this track a whole new layer. Her chorus pulls together the struggles that's being rapped about by giving it a nurturing tone which makes the track more relatable towards the casual listener. The surprise comes as she spits in the final part of the song. A sharpness that cuts through with a poetic tone, a blunt delivery and a certain type of sincerity that leaves a lasting impression on the listener. With just this track to base everything on, I will say my minds always looking for a way to escape at times. In those moments, it’s artists who are bold enough to create a full on movie score to accompany their rhymes that has a strong draw on me, personally. To create a world is bold, to truly pull it off? Very rare. This track does sound very promising and leaves one wondering if they can build upon this track and take the listener on a journey for a while? I’ll say that if theres truly no limits to the Imagination then let’s get ready to fly. If there’s something Beyond the Clouds, I’m eager to see it but am also preparing for a turbulent yet entertaining ride.
