“Dr. Starkman shares a smile” Going to the dentist is something few people look forward to. Since most of us make an effort to go every six months, wouldn’t it be great if we actually liked going? Well, one local dentist is changing peoples’ perceptions about visiting the dentist. Dr. David Starkman is proving he is more than just a dentist; he is a friend to the community through his dedication to providing dental services to children for free. The program is called Dentistry from the Heart, and it is spreading smiles across the area! Over the past few weeks, there has been much excitement about the 5th Annual Dentistry from the Heart event scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 20th, from 8-4 at Dr. Starkman’s office, located just south of the Ichabod Crane High School on Route 9 in Valatie. Dr. Starkman and his team have donated over $25,000 in free dental care to more than 160 Columbia and Rensselaer County residents over the past 4 years. “It all comes down to wanting to provide something greater to my

www.crwnewspapers.net

community” said Dr. Starkman. “The services provided at our Dentistry from the Heart event help more than just a child’s teeth, it gives them a renewed reason to smile.” In a time when families are stretching dollars for the necessities, routine cleanings and exams can get pushed to the back burner. Dr. Starkman realized this and found a way to help make dental care more affordable for families. Starkman offers a program called Quality Dental Plan which saves families 20% on dental services. So families can take care of their smile – without breaking the bank. Just Google or search for information on Starkman and it’s clear he is exceeding patients’ expectations. “Working with Dr. Starkman and his staff is always a joy. His ability to diagnose and solve my dental situation is always well thought out and prompt. I honestly feel that he cares about me, not only as a patient but as a human being,” states Harold from Valatie. More information about Dentistry from the Heart can be found by visiting www.dentistryfromtheheart.org or www.drdavidstarkman.com.

3 SCOUTS FROM POESTENKILL TROOP 528 RECEIVE RANK OF EAGLE!!

On Sunday, March 15th, 2013, Joshua Glasser, Andrew Glanton and Justin Arsenault (pictured from left to right) were all recognized at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for earning Boy Scouting’s highest rank. Troop 528 is proudly chartered by The Sullivan-Jones VFW Post 7466. Troop 528 would like to thank all of the veterans at the post for their service to our great country and their continued service through the support of the Boy Scouting program. Joshua, son of Michael and Denise Glasser is a senior at Averill Park High School. Josh’s Eagle Scout Leadership project began with finding a need in his community through discussions with Poestenkill Supervisor Dominick Jacangelo. Josh then planned, prepared and executed his project of replacing the community bulletin board and adding lighting and landscaping around the Poestenkill Town Hall sign. The resulting project is a great addition to the facility. Andrew, son of George and Cheryl Glanton is a sophomore at Tech Valley High. Andrew found a need in the Averill Park School community through discussions with the Miller Hill-Sand Lake School principal. His Eagle Scout Leadership project consisted of planning and organizing the disassembly, moving and reassembling of a rock climbing wall from the Sand Lake School (now closed) to the Miller Hill-Sand Lake School. This will enable school children to begin to use and enjoy the rock wall again. Justin, Son of Robert and Michelle Arsenault is a sophomore at Averill Park High School. Justin’s Eagle Scout Leadership project began at The West Sand Lake United Methodist Church. Justin corresponded with Joe Farannini, owner of “Grave Stone Matters”. He was taught by Mr. Farannini, the proper techniques used to safely clean and repair gravestones. Justin then educated his crew of scouts and adults who cleaned 60 and repaired 4 headstones at the Elmwood Cemetery in West Sand Lake. Congratulations to these 3 young men for achieving success on the long path toward the rank of Eagle Scout! And let us not forget…this is not the end of their path but a new beginning. ~ Submitted by Richard Scott

During the month of February, students from WSL K-Kids initiated a school-wide service project. The goal was to collect 1,000 “gently loved” books. We wanted to share a love of reading and books with others that might not have as many books. If we were able to accomplish this goal, then the students would be able to have a theme day at the end of the month. We’re happy to report that we far exceeded that goal with a collection of over 3,245 books!!! These books have been donated to Joseph’s House in Troy, Seton Health Pediatrics office in Troy, and other agencies that could use some books. On March 1, WSL students were ready to celebrate their accomplishment. Our pajama day theme tied in perfectly with Dr. Seuss’ birthday and READ Across America Day. Our librarian, Mrs. Yost, dressed up as the Cat in the Hat and read a Dr. Seuss book to students, and we had DEAR time during the day. Take some time to share a great book with your child. The ~ Submitted by Laura Zalucky rewards are priceless!

COUNTDOWN BEGINS FOR POESTENKILL LIBRARY SPRING MARKET DAY The Friends of the Poestenkill Library have set May 18th (rain date May 19th) as the date for their Spring Market Day. This is fair warning to get any used books, purses, jewelry and collectibles ready to be donated. This will also allow you time to clean-out your flower beds for plant donations. And best of all, the bakers of the area can think about what delicious goodies they will prepare. What a great way to support your library and take advantage of some bargains too. This year, we request that all collectibles be left at the library at least a week before Market Day or May 11th. This gives the committee time to sort and price the items. Think Spring!

SL RECEIVER OF TAXES HOURS The office of the Sand Lake receiver of taxes hours in March will be Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9AM to Noon. We will be closed for the Easter Weekend, March 29 and 30. The office will be open April 1st from 9-4. This is the last day taxes will be received in my office. All taxes must be in my office or postmarked by April 1st. If you have any questions, please call my office at 674~ Jill Quell 2026 Ext.26.

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the March 12, 2013 legislative meeting. The Legislature has worked hard to generate a savings for taxpayers, and the March meeting marked an important accomplishment in that effort. During 2012, the Legislature generated a savings of $115,000, and that savings placed in a Taxpayer Protection Fund. The Taxpayer Protection Fund has been used in recent years to reduce the amount of tax increases and protect needed services. The savings from 2012 will be used in the next budget process to balance the budget and legislators approved a transfer of the savings to the fund at the March meeting. The savings came about through reductions in personnel and purchases, less supply purchases and other cost saving measures. The March meeting also included the annual State of the County address by County Executive Kathleen Jimino. The County Executive discussed economic development efforts and recognized the efforts of the County Legislature in extending sewer service to Regeneron. Regeneron, a bio-pharmaceutical company, is expanding its East Greenbush facility and creating 300 new jobs. The County Executive also touched on shared service efforts and other cost-cutting moves that have helped the county maintain a solid bond rating and receive positive financial audits and reviews. County Clerk Frank Merola will be returning $1 million in revenue to the county thanks to efficient operation of his office. We were happy to welcome Cassandra Jane Werking of East Greenbush to commend her for her service as Siena College Student Senate President. The daughter of Jim and Geri Werking, Cassandra Jane is continuing her family’s record of public service and she worked to expand transportation options, services for commuters and other services for students. Days after the meeting, we were pleased to participate in the Troop 528 Eagle Court of Honor as troop members Joshua Glasser, Andrew Glanton and Justin Arsenault earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank for Boy Scouts. Congratulations to the Scouts, their families and the troop. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, April 9, 2013. Residents are welcome to contact us at the legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy, NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.

If the old saying, “In like a lion, out like a lamb” is true, then let’s hope that the rest of this month will finish up nicely! I would like to thank Dave Van Wormer, DPW Commissioner, and his crew for their efforts in keeping our streets clean and safe through this winter. With the luck of the Irish this month, we can hope that we are heading into nice spring weather. This year has had a productive start with working on a number of projects that will have positive, long-lasting impacts on the Town of East Greenbush. The Waste Water Treatment Plant project, so everyone is aware of the status, is one that is very important to my administration. We are currently still in the early financial stages of planning. We are working together with the Engineers to lay the groundwork necessary to keep the project moving forward at a rate that will keep us on schedule. On February 27th, Joe Cherubino, Hank LaBarba and Matt Mastin made a presentation during a Public Information Session regarding the Water Quality Project and Hampton Manor Water Quality Improvement Project. The purpose of this Informational Session was to provide the public with the necessary information to keep the natural resource within our Town Beautiful. On behalf of the Town Board, I would like to thank Joe, Hank and Matt for their hard work. This was a very informative presentation, and we look forward to seeing the results! The Roundabout on Route 4 and Mannix Road Project is currently on track. On March 15th, the Advanced Detail Plans were submitted and are currently pending approval from the Department of Transportation. Once we receive approval, the next step is approval for Federal funding. Upon approval and completion of each step successfully, we hope to see the project beginning in July! On behalf of the Town of East Greenbush, I would like to welcome East Greenbush Police Officer Mark Mann home from his fourth tour in Afghanistan. It is an honor to have such a man on our Police Force. We hope that he is enjoying being stateside with his family, and we look forward to his return to work! Thank you, Mark, for your hard work and dedication to our Country. From my office and the Town of East Greenbush I wish everyone a Happy Spring! Be Well!

Town Board Members Phil Malone, and Sue Mangold, welcome Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (center) to The East Greenbush Tech Park. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand came to East Greenbush to discuss her sponsorship of the “Made in America Manufacturing Bill”. The Senator was accompanied by Congressman Paul Tonko, and met with local business leaders, and elected officials at a press conference and reception. The Senator’s Bill will establish a Federal Funding Competition, encouraging the design and implementation, via Public-Private Partnerships, of comprehensive strategies that spur growth for local manufacturing industries. Funds awarded under this bill would provide low interest loans supporting facility construction, and equipment upgrades. Funding would also support job training and vocational education programs within the participating businesses. The event was held in The East Greenbush Tech Park, at the headquarters of XOS, a manufacturer of material analysis equipment, with Members of the Town Board in attendance. “We are so pleased that Senator Gillibrand chose East Greenbush to make this announcement, and bring attention to the positive developments within our business community” commented Sue Mangold. “Companies like XOS are a prime example of the success possible when business, education and government institutions work together,” added Councilman Malone.

If you have heard the term “permaculture”, and are wondering what it is about, here is your chance to get the scoop. Come to the Sand Lake Town Library (intersection of Routes 66 and 43) on Saturday, April 6, at 1:00PM for a one-hour free Introduction to Permaculture, presented by local Certified Permaculture Designer, Rebekah Rice. Learn how to get more from your garden — and maybe your life — by working smarter with nature. And with spring planting season fast upon us, don’t go away empty (or clean) handed — stay for the handson soil blocking workshop (also free) starting at 2:00PM. You’ll get the skinny on this containerless technique for starting seeds for zero-trauma transplanting. Bring a tray (a cardboard box will do) and seeds for your favorite frostsensitive vegetables and take them home in directly plantable blocks. For more information, please call the library at 674-5050. These educational opportunities are organized by the Poest Earth Arts Cooperative.

athlete OF THE WEEK GREG HOTALING ~SCHOLAR ATHLETE by: Lauren Navratil

by Claire Everett Although you wouldn’t know it by looking outside, spring sports are just around the corner. Many of the pre-season scrimmages this week were postponed, but there is still a light at the end of the tunnel! You can expect to hear about some APHS varsity sporting events next week! This week I will be addressing a sport rarely mentioned by the column, due to its absence at Averill Park, but whose athletes deserve to be recognized. This week the AP Swimmers took central stage. Although AP doesn’t have a swimming team, there are a number of athletes that take it upon themselves to compete through other schools or in the community. This week was the Gold Championships for the Adirondack League Swimming Competition. The meet involved athletes from Utica to the Canadian Border to Vermont. Averill Park was represented by three swimmers: Sarah Herbold an 8th grader at Algonquin Middle School and Jessica McMillan and Sean Zelenke of Averill Park High School. The youngest of the swimmers, Sarah Herbold, swims for the Albany Starfish Swim Club. Sarah took first place for the 1650 yard freestyle (one mile), first place for the 500 yard freestyle, first place for the 100 yard freestyle, and second place for the 50 yard freestyle and 200 yard free-style. In addition, she placed in the finals for all of her events that included 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard backstroke, 400 yard Individual Medley, and the 200 backstroke. She also received a Second Place High Point Award for her age group of 13-14. This excluded the 1650 yard swim. Congratulations Sarah and just keep swimming! The two high school students, Jess and Sean, both swim for Uncle Sam Swim Club. Both of them also represented both their own team and Averill Park very well. Jessica finished 8th place in the 100 yard back, 16th in the 100 yard free and 12th in the 200 yard fly. Sean took 11th in the 500 yard free, won 14th in the 200 m and finished 15th in the 100 yard back. Great job to both Sean Zelenke and Jessica McMillen for each being named MVP on their individual swim teams and making it to the finals in 3 events. Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed in the Gold Championship. Your skill and initiative to tackle a sport not played at your school, and at such a high level, is outstanding. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at claireeverett11@gmail.com.

Spring sports at Averill Park High School have finally begun, which means all our baseball players are working hard every day to make sure they are ready for the long season to come. Our next athlete of the week is a scholar athlete who has been playing baseball since he could pick up a bat and ball. Greg Hotaling, a senior at APHS, is a four year starter for the varsity team. His main positions are center field and pitcher. Greg enjoys playing the game that he loves and the added competition just drives him to work harder. During games, he gets into his “zone”, where he feels as if he has everything under control and he is unbeatable. Being a four year starter on a varsity team doesn’t come easy to anyone, it takes lots of time and dedication. Hotaling believes that the season never really begins or ends for him, but rather, it lasts all year long. Greg practices on his own in the off-season as much as he can and then takes a month or two off. After that, he starts back up right where he left off so he can improve in any way possible. Greg has also been very academically successful over the years. He has always been the type of student to get his work done and strive to earn the best grades possible. “Being a scholar athlete means that you can balance your school work along with playing a sport,” says Hotaling. This year he is taking Physics, Pre-Calculus, Men’s Literature, Detective Fiction, Participation in Government, Economics, Engineering Design and Development and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). In the future, Hotaling would like to continue playing baseball as long as possible and at the highest level he can achieve. He is currently looking at Central Connecticut State University where he would play baseball and major in Mechanical Engineering. In his spare time, Greg likes to spend most of his time outside by fishing, hunting and playing some casual baseball. A lot of people have helped inspire Greg to be the person he is today including his family, friends and coaches. He would like to thank his coaches and his dad for always pushing him to do the best that he can at everything. We wish Greg and the rest of the Varsity Baseball team the best of luck in their season!

** SAVE MODIFIED SPORTS AT ALGONQUIN!** Attention Averill Park parents!! Modified sports at Algonquin Middle School are not in the school district budget for the 2013– 2014 school year. YES, we’ve heard this before, but please be aware that the Board of Education and the administration have made it clear that there is no possibility that these programs will be funded with district budget money next year. The only hope of restoring these programs is for concerned parents and coaches to work together and raise the necessary money. This is too important to ignore! Please keep your eyes and ears open as plans are underway to organize and bring sports back to our middle school – please get involved! GO WARRIORS!! ~ The Averill Park Booster Club and friends

ROY HOBBS MEN’S BASEBALL LEAGUE SEEKING PLAYERS

SCHODACK TOWN BOARD OPPOSES NY SAFE LAW

The Capital District Roy Hobbs Men’s Baseball League is looking for players ages 30 and over for the upcoming season. The season runs from May through August with 21 regular season games plus playoffs. For more information, go to leaguelineup.com/cdrh, or call Ken at 470-7894.

Letter of the Editor: On January 15, 2013, Governor Cuomo signed into law the NY SAFE Act (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act). As one of 10 motions considered in their meeting on March 14, the Schodack Town Board (STB), without debate, unanimously approved resolution 2013-099 opposing the NY SAFE ACT. Key provisions of NY SAFE include: 1) a mental-health alert; 2) a tougher assault weapons ban; 3) stronger regulations on ammunition; 4) statewide recertification of handguns and assault rifles; 5) universal background checks - closing the private-sales loophole; 6) the Webster Provision, making murder of a first responder engaged in duties an A-1 felony; 7) an extension of Kendra’s Law; 8) protection of families (when under an order of protection); 9) safe gun storage 10) provisions to keep guns out of schools; and 11) tougher penalties for illegal gun use. The Board members spent as little effort in drafting Resolution 2013-099 as in debating it; the verbiage comprising 2013-099 is identical to Resolution P/68/13 passed by the Rensselaer County Legislature. Are the STB members encouraged to vote a certain way by higher-ups in the Republican Party? Is the STB expected to march lock-step with the NRA? The resolution refers to Second Amendment rights; however, we all know that there are common-sense limitations to the amendment. One can’t own a 50-caliber machine gun, a grenade launcher, or a howitzer. Voters may like to know what specific provisions of NY SAFE STB members found objectionable or an infringement on second-amendment rights. There are members on STB who never say a word in meetings other than “aye” to vote with the majority. We would like to know their opinions on universal background checks and high-capacity magazines. Since the STB has brought up the issue of guns, they should have a serious, open debate about the issue, and whether, for example, members are in favor of arming principals and teachers in Schodack schools. We question whether the STB, in passing this second-hand resolution, has given the issue of guns any serious thought. ~ David and Barbara Spink

WAVE RIDERS HELPS CHILDREN COPE WITH LOSS

Business Card Bulletin Board

Children grieve personal losses just as much as adults do and also need support. The Wave Riders program of The Community Hospice helps children “ride the waves of grief” in a caring environment. Thursdays at 5:00 p.m., starting April 11 through May 16, the program of peer support groups, for children in grades K through 8th grade, will take place at the Hospice office at 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer. For detailed information, please contact Julia Soto at 2858100. In these group experiences, children develop skills to help them cope with the losses they may encounter throughout their lives and build self esteem. According to Liz Smith, Supervisor of Bereavement Services, “It is important that children be able to recognize their normal feelings of sadness and grief, and have the opportunity to express them in a safe and comfortable setting. When they share with other grieving children, they feel less isolated.”

“IN THE PARK” Friedrich Nietzsche once said that, “The essence of all beautiful art, all great art is gratitude”. And if it’s one thing a select few of Averill Park art students have right now is gratitude. Ten lucky students have had their art pieces selected to be in the 2013 High School Regional at the Albany Center Gallery. This is a huge honor and they are very lucky to be selected. All the pieces are all unique and different along with using various medias ranging from; Acrylic Paint to clay, from C41 prints to charcoal and from Chromira prints to pen and ink. The following students have been chosen to participate; Samantha Bedell (Grade 12) with her Untitled Print, Jessica Bowen (Grade 12) with her piece entitled “Whoosh”, Katelyn Easterling (Grade 11) with her Untitled Print, Jenna Hull (Grade 10) with her piece “Me, Myself and Others”, Madison Huntley (Grade 11) with her clay “Portrait Vessel”, Caitlin Jansson (Grade 10) with her print entitled “After Math”, Jacqueline Kindlon with two pieces one called “Belle’s Sandwich” and the other “Dead Sea”, Larkin McNamara (Grade 10) with her untitled pen and ink, Lydia Sharp with her painting “Histo-Entomology” and Ava Welling with her clay piece entitled “Remains”. I wish them all the best and hope that at least one of our very talented students places at this event. Awards for the event will be announced on March 27th.

*EASTER *CELEBRATE *WORSHIP Don’t you desire to celebrate Easter in a service where you are welcome to come as you are? REAL ESTATE As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the March 12, 2013 legislative meeting. In recent years, the Legislature has operated legislative offices under budget. We are proud that for 2012, the Legislature generated a savings of $115,000. This amount will be assigned to a Taxpayer Protection Fund that has been used during the past two years to help the county stay under the state property tax cap and protect needed services. The savings in the Legislature has meant the legislative budget is at a level comparable to the early 1990s. A re-bid of the county insurance policy two years ago netted a $900,000 savings and brought insurance costs below what the county paid in the early 1990s. County Executive Kathleen Jimino delivered her 2013 State of the County address at the meeting. The County Executive discussed county cost-cutting efforts along with job creation and economic development projects. She also discussed the work by the Legislature in supporting a project to expand the Regeneron facility in East Greenbush, which will help create 300 new jobs, by extending county sewer service. The Legislature passed a resolution seeking an audit of the state Medicaid program, following news reports of fraud in the taxpayer-supported system. We were joined by the family of Kristopher Nichols, who passed away after a brave fight with a serious illness. Chris was known as a great family man and friend and he will be missed. The Legislature was also joined by the family of Donald Justus of Castleton, who was active in civic and community affairs for generations. Don recently passed away, and we thanked his family for his dedication and contributions to our county. We also passed a resolution mourning the passing of Archie Sherman of Nassau. Archie passed away after decades of service to the community, leaving behind many friends. Legislators also passed a resolution in memory of Harold Loveridge, a Sand Lake resident, veteran of World War II who was active in Kiwanis and helping improve Butler Park.

THANKS TO EAST GREENBUSH SCHOOL DISTRICT EDUCATORS Letter to the Editor: Unfortunately, so much of what we read or hear in the media regarding education these days is negative. As parents, we want to take this opportunity to recognize the many outstanding educators and staff working in the East Greenbush Central School District. Our community is fortunate to be served by many dedicated teachers, staff, aides and administrators who work hard each day in the face of considerable challenges to educate our children, from the elementary to middle to high school levels. As parents, we recognize the hard work and dedication of these educators serving the East Greenbush Central School District. We are seeing the results of that effort, as our daughter Gianna recently made the Principal’s List and High Honor Roll at Goff Middle School. Our son Luciano has also transitioned successfully to Columbia High School after completing middle school. We are very proud of our daughter and our son, but recognize that they did not get there alone. The efforts of those who work in the EGCSD are paying off for our children. We are particularly proud that Gianna has been on the Principal’s list numerous times, has been an Honors student during her tenure at Goff, works hard to maintain her grades and has been chosen to participate in the National Young Leaders State Conference. Thanks in particular to Principal Matthew Sloane, House Principal Daniel Garab and House Principal Cara Talmadge for their efforts, along with the many teachers, staff and aides who have made a positive difference for our daughter, our son and the lives of many other students. Your work is having a positive impact today and in shaping a brighter future for our community. ~ Leon and Dena Fiacco, Wynantskill Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

The Man who never was. This is one of the finest and most significant hoaxes in history. It had a very limited audience - the German military intelligence and command structure up to and including Hitler. As plans got under way for the Allied invasion of Sicily in June 1943, British counter-intelligence agent Ewen Montagu masterminded a scheme to mislead the Germans into thinking the next landing would occur in Greece. This extraordinary operation, the stuff of legend, called for a dead body, dressed as a Royal Marine officer, Major William Martin, and carrying false information about a pending Allied invasion of Greece, to wash up on a Spanish shore near the town of a known Nazi agent. Major Martin was a completely fictiticious character - The Man Who Never Was. He never existed. The challenge was to make the scenario so perfectly believable that the Germans would accept the documents as genuine. The plot was given the code name “Operation Mincemeat.”: The plan was to have Major Martin’s body, still clutching the briefcase containing the letters he was carrying, washing up on the beach on the coast of Spain. An overturned life raft was to be found in the same area, giving the illusion of a plane crash at sea on the way to Gibraltar. The letters Major Martin carried were carefully designed deceptive fakes intended to suggest that the Allied invasion would be aimed at Greece and Sardinia, NOT Sicily. The body was iced down in a special container, and loaded aboard a British submarine. The onshore wind carried the body towards shore where the fisherman found it. After that the Spanish did exactly as Montagu had predicted. The body was found by a Spanish fisherman and was turned over to Spanish authorities and then to the German Agent who had the documents copied. To sum it up, the hoax worked beyond Montagu’s wildest dreams. It fooled everyone in the German command, including Hitler. The Germans to split and diluted their defenses in Sicily in a catastrophic way. An important Panzer division was diverted to Greece. A useful naval unit was sent to the Aegean, taking it out of action in Sicily. Defensive efforts were diverted from Sicily to Sardinia and Corsica. Significant parts of Sicily’s defenses were moved to the northern coast to be ready for an attack from Sardinia. The seriously weakened defenses of Sicily were unable to withstand the huge Allied assault and collapsed fairly quickly. After a few days the Germans began to suspect something, as the invasion of Sicily continued and nothing was happening at Sardinia and Greece, but it was too late to recover. “Mincemeat” had been swallowed whole. COURTNEY LUSKIN CROWNED NEW YORK STATE DAIRY PRINCESS Courtney Luskin from Rensselaer County, New York, was crowned the 2013-2014 New York State Dairy Princess on February 21, at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool, New York. Having served as the county Dairy Princess since spring of 2012, Luskin will devote an additional year promoting milk and dairy products with the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, Inc. (ADADC). As state princess, Luskin receives a $1,200 scholarship and will represent ADADC at county dairy princess pageants, farm meetings and a variety of special events. In addition, she will help train new county promoters at seminars and workshops. Sponsored by ADADC, the 50th annual coronation completed the year-long reign of Emma Andrew, of Newark, NY. Meghan Rohe, of Onondaga County, New York was named first Alternate State Princess, and Claudia Hauslauer of Livingston County, New York was selected as second Alternate State Princess. They receive a $700 scholarship and $600 scholarship, respectively. Both young women will assist the State Dairy Princess with training, appearances and other duties. All three young women were named as speech winners. Rohe and Hauslauer also received top marks on a product knowledge exam. Meghan’s sister, Caitlin, was the 2006-2007 New York State Dairy Princess. Some 19 county dairy princesses from throughout New York competed in the state pageant, including a personal interview, an impromptu and prepared adult speech, a product knowledge exam, writing skills test and informal interaction with others. Judges evaluated the contestants on their communication skills, knowledge of the dairy industry, poise and personality. Pageant judges were Junia Isiminger, dairy farmer from Wind Swept Dairy; Andy Orr, Layout and Graphic Designer from Dairylea Cooperative Inc., and Raechel Sattazahn, Marketing Officer with AgChoice Farm Credit. The American Dairy Association & Dairy Council, Inc. is the local promotion and management organization funded by dairy farmer checkoff dollars. We work closely with Dairy Management Inc.™ and are responsible for increasing demand for U.S.-produced dairy products on behalf of New York, northern New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania dairy farmers.
