It is understandable that after being photographed using a bong, the American swimmer Michael Phelps is being dropped by his sponsors quicker than one would drop a cute bunny upon learning that the cute bunny is an exploding bunny that will take off your hands. Brands such as Kellogg market to families, and pot-use isn't exactly conducive to a family setting (although they would sure make those awkward family dinners more fun). Yet that Phelps should risk having his career thrown in potential jeopardy for the apparent crime of smoking a substance, whose health effects are for the most part benign, is absurd. That he risks being penalized as a criminal only reveals how stupid our society can be. The respected British medical journal the Lancet rated Cannabis's potentiality for physical harm, and dependence as being significantly lower than alcohol and tobacco. Still, Cannabis is criminalized.

Call: Local 2814 or email: theatre@ufv.ca that has caused so much terror in this valley. Decriminalizing pot possession and small-scale production, isn't going to be the silver bullet to our gang problem. Yet it would be something that would take a huge source of income out of criminal gangs. You would think that most people should be in favor of doing something that could economically cripple these gangs. This reluctance to exercise good judgment is another example of how our prejudice towards a green plant can have more noxious effects than the substance itself. I'm not going to be naive and claim that there is enough will amongst the Canadian public to have pot decrimi-

that, smoking pot isn't going to magically turn you into a psychotically depraved person. If one was to use pot, one should exercise as much care and responsibility as you would if you were drinking alcohol. If you are prone to anxiety, it should be common sense that smoking pot is a bad idea. Yet, even if we were to firmly accept this correlation (which we must accept hasn't been firmly established in the realm of causality), this is little justification for its prohibition.

However, there is something much worse than the culture that celebrates a plant, that is the culture that seeks to criminalize it. The culture that neglects to look at the economic costs, the human costs and doesn't ask the salient question: is this worth it? Watching Michael Phelps's reputation take a nose-dive because he took a substance that is less noxious than alcohol should make us ask this question. It is reasonable to say that pot is something you wouldn't try, and it's completely sane for parents to not want their children to smoke it. But when concern turns to hysteria, it shouldn't be coddled. We may mock those that take pot a little too seriously, but the prohibition of Cannabis has needlessly cost lives, and left our society worse off. The truth is, we allow this to happen because we lack the maturity to deal with a simple plant.

O n Friday the 13th approximately thirty students, staff and faculty gathered at the Abbotsford Campus book store to meet Jaspreet Singh, UFV's new Writer in Residence. Singh read from his short story collection 17 Tomatoes: Tales from Kashmir, and his novel, Chef. Jaspreet Singh is a Montreal resident, a writer, a novelist, and a playwright. Many of his published works revolve around Kashmir, where Singh grew up. A highly contested region in Northwestern India, Kashmir has been witness to violence and discord for decades. Since the 1940s it's been disputed by India, Pakistan and China. Kashmir has provided a dominant theme for Singh's writing. "I wanted to understand the wounds of my parents' generation," Singh explains. "My father was in the army, and so these two books, [17 Tomatoes and Chef] they're set in the army camps. Now after these two I can write something new about my own a generation." Singh has also contributed an essay based on a series of conversations with AIDS orphans in Delhi to an anthology called AIDS Sutra: Untold Stories from India. His play, Speak, Oppenheimer was written for a theatre in Montreal, and he's currently working on another novel, set in BC this time. Jaspreet Singh is a scientist as well as a writer. The concert was to be put on as a joint effort between the SFS who were hosting the sustainability conference and SUS who handle student clubs and activities. SUS was working with an event organizer called Tria. However wires got crossed and soon there was a series of miscommunications that lead to the mishap on Friday. Luis Guevera, the SUS representative involved in this event, says that there were a lot people asking for and trying to deliver a lot of different things. That's where things got complicated and people got confused. There have been several reasons given by various parties explaining what it was exactly that put the nail in the coffin of this concert conundrum. Guevera brings many causes to the table. SUS was under the understanding that outside groups, who hadn't been a part of the conference, would be allowed to join in the event. SUS invited members of the UFV athletics teams who were finishing off the last game of their season amongst other groups. The guest list was beefed up, according to Guevera, because there was concern that the shows would not otherwise see a full audience that its organizers felt it deserved. There has also been talk about problems with the sale of liquor at Casey's during the show, which was planned as an all ages event. Guevara explains that SFS asked only for "food and drinks" and nothing else. SUS asked their pub manager if it was possible and when they got the go ahead so did SFS. However on the day of the conference SUS was told that the event had to be dry. SUS suddenly saw that they would be unable to make up the cost of servers, food costs and other expenses of opening Casey's selling chips and pop alone. Although SUS expressed desire to support events held by clubs and associations on campus, with unclear expectations, last minute changes and no visible way to recuperate their losses, SUS could not afford the outing.

Aman Grover, owner of EA, was delighted to hold the concert at his establishment.

PAULFALARDEAU STAFFWRITER T he Sustainability conference held at UFV by students for sustainability this past week was a great success. There was hardly a single flaw, except one. A series of concerts, which was supposed to take place on Friday, as an event for participants of the conference, was cancelled at the last minute and instead was held at Ethical Addictions coffee house.

EA has always been happy to see bands play on premises and had not featured one since January. Grover said that EA is planning on continuing the trend with at least two concerts a month. Concerts are good for business so, when EA music managers gave him a call, Aman was happy to help out the promoters in need of a last minute venue.

In the end, everyone who wanted to see a good concert with great local bands got to, but not after some creative venue shuffling. Guevara states the cause of the whole problem was miscommunication between too many planners. "Next time it should be one centralized person," says Guevara "who handles all the booking and accommodations. That goes for any conference held at UFV, to avoid miscommunication."

Jaspreet Singh has participated in the Writers in Residence program before; he was at Calgary University in 2007 and 2008 for their Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program. Located in the University House in Abbotsford, in the centre for Indo-Canadian Studies, Singh's office is Fl27. His stint at UFV as Writer in Residence will last until April 14. "That's ironic, because it's the Punjabi New Year, Vaisakhi." So in the new year, Singh will be moving on. However, until then he's available to everyone at the University for advice and consultation on writing projects. The Writer in Residence program is sponsored by the Centre for IndoCanadian Studies and Research, the Department of English, the Dean of Arts, and the Office of the President. To the writers here at UFV, Singh gives this advice. "Writing means a lot of rewriting. It also means a lot of reading good books, and it means a lot of seeing and observing the world, and feeling it."

At 2:30 PM on the day of the concert, which was scheduled to begin at 7PM, Guevera got the call from event organizers, that the plug had been pulled on the concert at UFV and had been moved to Ethical Addictions.

Singh studied Chemical Engineering at McGill University, and attained his PhD in the field. However, he's always been passionate about writing. "I kept a journal for most of my life." he mused. "But I finally published my first two short stories simultaneously in Fiddlehead in June 2001. It was a dream I'd always had, but I'd never written a short story before." When asked about his inspiration for writing, Singh replied that it was a very complicated question. "Whatever I tell you I'll go home and say 'oh I should have said this or that.' There's so many variables, as they say in the sciences. There's no one fixed thing, every story appears from some different emotion, some new interest, some unresolved thing from the past." It will also provide an opportunity for stimulating conversations with the department of English students and faculty members, the Indo-Canadian centre, and many others." Singh says. The lecture was part of a series put on by NSERC and the Chemistry Department at UFV. Liposomal Nano medicines are a way of using therapeutic agents in an advanced way by forcing them into a Liposomal Nanoparticle so that they are more efficiently delivered to the site that they are needed. Liposomal Nanoparticles (LNs) were first discovered by Alec Bangham in 1965 and have since branched into a new field of research. Over the past 20 years, researchers have been studying Liposomal Nanoparticles and over that time, a variety of techniques have been developed to encapsulate various kinds of drugs from cancer drugs and antibiotics, to drugs used for gene therapy within the Liposomal Nanoparticle. When the drug is forced into the Liposomal Nanoparticle, it can then be used to directly target certain areas, particularly tumors. The LN, with the encapsulated drug, is then injected into the blood stream where The Sky's the Limit

"Why the Green Party?" "They aren't compromised; they're going to do a lot of good. The liberal carbon tax is not going to be enough. The men (and two women) enrolled in the program often feel alienated from UFV politics, events, and any sense of fraternity with the rest of the student body. While there are currently only 31 students enrolled in the program, it is still worth acknowledgment for the simple fact that there are only three other schools in Canada that offer the same course. The program offers specific, hands on training, and the students are just as much UFV students as anyone that attends school at UFV's other campuses. Enrolled students learn a wide variety of structural assembly and repair techniques. One such project is for the students to build a perfectly balanced wing flap, which will then be intentionally damaged by instructors, for the students to repair to standards. The students learn to manipulate metals, as well as how to form and repair composite materials, and how to build relevant wood structures. The goal of the program is for students, at the end of the course, to be able to maintain any structural component of the aircraft. The entire program is 42 weeks, broken into 3 sections of 14 weeks. Within that time period, students take both theory and hands on courses, all of which are handled in UFV's hanger. The Abbotsford Airport set to grow continually, to offset the inability for the Vancouver International Airport to expand anymore. While the economy is slowing, the necessity of air transportation is still present, and Abbotsford's Airport is expanding in spite of the economic downturn. The land value surrounding the Abbotsford Airport has shot up in value in preparation for the inevitable expansion. The Abbotsford Airport also sees firefighting aircraft come in from as far as Saskatchewan it travels to the targeted site. When it reaches the site, usually a tumor of sorts, the LN leaks the encapsulated drug into the area, meaning it specifically targets the area and then delivers the drug to it. There are specifics that are required of the LN in order for it to be properly used. It must be small in diameter (100nm), provide retention of the encapsulating drug and a long (less than 6 hour) circulation lifetime. LN's have the ability and potential to offer many new treatments in Cancer therapy, gene therapy and cholesterol management. But how do these methods diffor maintenance, which puts UFV's aerospace program in a prime location to prepare graduates for employment. With 5 of the original 18 students in the senior portion of the program having been removed due to poor grades, the extensive training is clearly difficult. There is also a minimal acceptance score of 70% for fer from the conventional treatments? They allow the drug to go specifically to the site where it is needed, so the drug is not in the blood stream building up for too long in which case it causes side effects. This means that treatments have the potential to be provided to patients for longer periods of time which could lead to more success.

"You're a nursing student at the Chilliwack campus, why?" "It will give me the chance to help in a concrete way. I can work in underserved communities. I believe everyone has the universal right to healthcare."

"What are the issues you find important?" "Well, I want to stop the redirecting of rivers. The water is already at a critical low and the sea life is in danger. I also want to stop the privatization of power. And I also want to stop the TILMA project."

Police are planning on adding 131 more officers to gang work immediately and about 40 more over the next two years. BC Premier, Gordon Campbell announced that he is planning on putting funding towards more prison cells and also to restrict the sale of body armor and armored vehicles. Although these advancements are needed, the question still remains: what about our safety now? "Don't underestimate the power of a phone call, letter or e-mail." He said he wanted to make sure that each person understood that when you take an issue seriously, come together, show support, it can make a huge change. The facts he presented were life altering and very saddening, but he proved change can happen. Dr. Orbinski spoke about horrible scenes of inhuman suffering, and yet he still had the optimism that the world can change, and the world is essentially good. He wrote a book discussing his job as the MSF president, it's titled "An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action for the 21st Century". Is gang activity escalating in the Fraser Valley? Yes. It is escalating because there are more gangs than ever before but there has not been a corresponding increase in the drug market, (they are) all vying for control of the market. Who is being recruited? I wouldn't say that anyone is being recruited. They will take those that have shown that they are worthy and trustworthy. It is done by building trust and proving yourself time and again. What are authorities doing at the present time? There is a lot happening. Police are more sophisticated than they've ever been; more intelligencelead than ever before. There are just too many gangs and not enough police. Two years ago we had 50 gangs, now (there is) over 100, but no doubling in police or police resources.

W hen Charles Darwin first visited the Galapagos Islands he was astounded by the variety of wildlife he found there. Two-hundred years later Dr. Debbie Wheeler of the UFV Biology faculty was just as impressed after her first trip to the islands. This past Thursday students and instructors alike marvelled at the journey of photographs Dr. Wheeler displayed at the Learning Commons building (library foyer) on the Abbotsford campus. The event was hosted in homage to the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birthday and opened with speeches and a video in which an actor portraying Darwin welcomed all attending. Cake was provided as well in accordance with the celebration of Darwin's birth, but disappeared within five minutes. Dr. Wheeler's photographs focused on the extremes of her South American trip, starting with pictures of mythic looking glaciers to the Galapagos Islands themselves, comprised of volcanic rock, they allow for very little vegetation. Dr. Wheeler also demonstrated the incredible diversity of the islands by displaying pictures of inter-species varieties or pictures giving evidence to subtle differences within one species. One of the most interesting aspects of the Galapagos Islands, Dr. Wheeler pointed out, is that there are no predators inhabiting the area so the wildlife have no sense of fear and allow people to walk right up to them. For a trip that took just over two years in planning and arranging, the result was very rewarding. Of all the places Dr. Wheeler has visited, South America and the Galapagos are definitely the places she recommends all to see. Dr. Wheeler has kept a detailed blog of her journey through South America and the Galapagos which can be seen at http://www.ufv.ca/biology/South_America_2008.htm. There is also a miniature exhibit of Darwin and the Galapagos Islands in the Abbotsford campus library that will remain there throughout February, and Dr. Wheeler will be giving a slideshow and talk on Friday March 6th.

Oil tankers sailing through these waters could have a devastating effect on the ecosystems if a spill occurred. Taking positive action, Canada passed the Canadian Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act in 1970 after the U.S. tanker Manhattan sailed through the Northwest Passage without Canada's permission. This act law to do so. Further, Canada has no radar at monitoring stations, too few people to monitor satellite information, and limited capabilities to intercept ships. For Canada, if land claims are accepted, problems may arise. If countries are granted a territorial expansion that they have petitioned for, it is the responsibility of that country

8 1990 2000 machinery we do have is very out-dated and constantly out of commission. There are approximately less than five-hundred military personnel to control Canadian land north of sixty and much responsibility is put on the Canadian Rangers. The rangers are a group of predominantly Inuit volunteers who are the "eyes and ears of the north". They work together with the military patrolling Canadian northern coastlines.

The current global warming issue has finally shed light on another matter that has often been overlooked in the past. Arctic sovereignty has come to the forefront of both the political and scientific worlds and has sparked debate over land tenures in the circumpo~ countries of Russia, Finland, Denmark; the United States of America, and Canada. With the polar ice caps slowly melting, the Northwest Passage is now a sought after transportation route in which use rights have become a great international concern. The Arctic is also rich with natural resources that are now viable for development as the ice recedes. Some experts believe that the entire pole could be ice free in summer within two decades. Russia caught the attention of the world when leading Russian scientist Artur Chilingarov and his team used a submarine to plant the Russian flag under the North Pole. In the end, however, it will not be feats such as this that will appeal to decision makers but, rather, concise scientific research. Canada has been doing extensive research using seismic refraction to map the seabed by measuring the extent of vibrations throughout our continental shelf. Canadian scientists have been very open about their findings and are constantly submitting research to peer review journals and boards. To resolve land tenure issues The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was conceived in 1982. This agreement states that the countries surrounding the Arctic Circle have ten years to gather scientific evidence proving the extension of their country's continental shelf. If successful countries will acquire sole rights to all resources of the continental shelf which may extend beyond the current 200 nautical mile coastal economic zone. For Canada, this means that our economic zone could expand up to the size of three prairie provinces from shore. The information gathered will then be given to a panel of United Nations scientists who will judge whether or not the information is sufficient to warrant the extension of the country's land claims. In order for countries to be eligible and submit land claims, they must ratify the UN treaty. Once ratified countries have ten years to collect evidence to be reviewed by the UN panel. Norway was the first country to ratify in 1996 and Russia in 1997, they have until May 13th to submit their evidence, Canada has until 2013, Denmark until 2014 and the U.S. has yet to accede to the convention, although they have been gathering information over the past years despite this fact. Countries are now in a race against time to collect data to secure their land claims over the Arctic which houses approximately 30% of the worlds undiscovered natural gas and approximately 15% of the undiscovered oil and contains the North West Passage; a vital shipping route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Discovered in 1906, the Northwest Passage only recently became a worthwhile prospect for shippers in 2006, when it began melting completely during summers. With the caps slowly shrinking in size, leaving the passage exposed, shipping traffic in the area has significantly increased. This route is highly desirable because it saves approximately seven thousand kilometers or two weeks time in com parison to the current route through the Panama Canal. Although the Canadian government maintains that the passage is internal waters counterclaims suggest that it should be considered international waters as it links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Increases in the amount of traffic through the area raises environmental sets regulations to which ships must adhere to when passing through Canadian waters in order to prevent pollution and the introduction of harmful waste into coastal ecosystems. Although the U.S has agreed to report shipments, they are not required by to defend its territorial waters. Currently it is uncertain if the Canadian military can secure the coastline and waters. Many changes will need to be made as we do not presently have any naval ships or submarines which can function in the Arctic winter and the

The government plans upgrades proposing a deep-sea port at Iqaluit and the introduction of a military base. The Canadian government has said they will expand the number of military forces in the north by two to three thousand people. This would be added on to the four thousand two hundred Canadian Rangers that already patrol the north for a total of six to seven thousand forces patrolling Canada's northern-most border. In comparison Russia currently has 30 thousand forces in the area and the U.S. has 60 thousand forces in Alaska alone. Although Arctic sovereignty has become a hot topic as of late, the future is uncertain and the world must wait until all data is submitted and reviewed by the UN council. It could be years until this issue is resolved but that has not stopped countries from pouring millions into research and development projects with their eye on the Arctic's prolific resources. I n the late thirties, when my Grandfather was a child, he could live off less that five dollars a year. When my mother was a child in the early sixties she could buy five candies for a penny. In the eighties my aunt travelled Europe for a year for just over seven hundred dollars. Now, I can get a Starbucks coffee for about four dollars. The economy is not what it used to be. We're being forced to spend more and more money on the necessary trivial items of life and we're getting paid less and less; if you're lucky enough to even have a job, finding and keeping one is getting increasingly harder. Companies are not hiring and they are firing the few employees they do have. So how, in this increasingly expensive world, in this terrible economy that's going further down the proverbial toilet, how are we as students no- Canadian citizens supposed to be able to afford to even leave the house? We save. We cut corners and we try to scrounge together all our pennies. "But how?" you may ask. I know as North Americans we have difficulties living without certain luxuries. But with the current economy slow down there are some places you can save money. First off, stop going to for coffee or to the bar as often as you do. Go to the bar once a week, go fo_rStarbucks once a week. Let it be a treat. And if you can't live without coffee, go to Tim Horton's you can get a large coffee and a bagel for less than a Starbucks coffee (and it's just as good). That will save you at least ten dollars a week. Also if you are an avid movie-goer: stop! Just stop going to movies every weekend. Go to one once a month, pick a special movie and go with a friend, also try to go to a matinee, which is cheaper. And if you have to munch on some popcorn spilt it with your friend, or pack your own snacks. If you like to rent movies, rent one movie a month, and do it with a group of friends, that way you can split the cost of a couple movies, and you can make your own snacks. It's all right to be a homebody. Stay at home and read, play board games or just chat with friends. Borrowing books from the library is free, and you can also borrow films from the library as well. When it comes to food and you're going to class, pack a lunch; it will save you loads of money as well. When grocery shopping, choose the knockoff items instead of the brand names, they normally taste the same and they are cheaper. Also, shop bulk. Costco is great for that. And bare in mind the things you want and the things you need when you're shopping. Get the cards that help you earn the points, which in turn will get you free stuff. If you aren't going green and still use plastic grocery bags use them as trash bags this way you won't have to buy any. Cook dinner at home instead going out. That can save hundreds of do!Jars. Ifyou have to, again, save for a special occasion. To have a vehicle these days is ridiculously expensive. So to save, try carpooling, taking public transit, or even walking or bike riding. If you want to save gas, take shorter routes (MapQuest can tell you the best gas efficient way to get to places) and take heavy things out of your trunk. Maintain your car regularly and keep it. If you don't need a new car, don't get one. Don't start your car and run it needlessly, don't let it sit idle. Try not to drive above the speed limit, less speed less gas. Keep your windows shut while driving on the freeway. With the windows open the car will drag and bring down your mileage, avoid gravel or rough roads and park so you can drive forward later; avoid reversing. These little things will help you save gas, which helps you save money, What about globally? Well some countries have already thought of this. One case is the Czech Republic is offering a free plane ticket and five hundred euros to foreigners who will voluntarily leave and agree to go to their home This will help r i d of unemployment and keep the jobs for the Czech citizens.

It's a great idea! I really think Canada and the U.S.A. should begin to work on giant group projects to give our unemployed residents work. Like President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal project. The economy is changing and with all the mixed news reports of when this recession is going to end, it's best to save your pennies and these tips will definitely help. http://www.howtoadvice.com/savinggas http://www.milliondollarjourney.com/25-ways-i-save-money. htmhttp://www.vancouversun.com/ Business/Czech+government+unem ployed +foreigners+ home/ 1270193/ story.html

CascadeNews · ThursdayFebruary19th 2009 My Two Cents

Supposedly women who have had abortions suffer from guilt and guiltrelated psychological problems, but is it any wonder considering the condemnation they are subjected to? A relation of mine reported feeling very disturbed by a highly graphic pro-life campaign on the UBC campus several years ago. She got into a full-blown argument with these activists at the time and later on in UBC's student newspaper; her argument was neither pro-choice nor pro-life but that the way this prolife group was making their point was offensive, potentially disturbing, and likely to stir up more controversy than support. By campaigning in this aggressive way this pro-life group was alienating students rather than making a case for their cause. Worse than being just disturbing, these images were making viewers less likely to listen or agree and more likely to feel heckled, guilty, and provoked. Guilt, while it can make people bow in fear, never convinced anyone to bow of their own free will (though the church has been using it for years despite). Here we stumble upon the concept of free will choice. If a woman is teetering on the decision of whether she will give birth to that little whisper of life inside of her or simply release it back to the otherworld with a "this is not your time yet" what will influence her decision? Aside from her moral or religious perspectives her decision will depend upon her capability to care for an infant. Marriage is not an option in many Darwin Fangirl

There's a memory that sticks in my head from my early days in private school. It was Bible class and we were learning about the Scopes monkey trial. We watched a film depicting the trial and afterwards discussed what we saw. I remember hearing my Bible teacher ask us if we thought that it was a good idea for the prosecution to read Darwin, just to see what they were opposing. He then firmly informed us that we should never do such a thing, regardless of whether it is to understand what is being fought against. He told us that it is dangerous to plunge into enemy territory and that it might sway us away from what we believe. This was the day I stopped going to Bible class. I couldn't fathom why a teacher would vehemently forbid students from learning about the arguments they were to put forth. Now, I don't want to use this experience to further the divide between science and religion. I don't want to say that Christians are ignorant. I want to warn against the ignorance that can be encouraged in any dogma. In celebration of Darwin's birthday, I won't go on and on about his contributions to science. Instead, I want to place this man on a pedestal of thinking outside the box. Of challenging the zeitgeist and enduring the slander that inevitably ensues. It is due to individuals like Charles Darwin that we make advances in society and that we learn the incredible value of asking the questions that raise controversy. If we all took the advice of my tenth grade Bible teacher, we'd be trapped in a stagnant world, in which progress would never be made. The real danger lies in the blind acceptance of dogma. Charles Darwin stands as a hero, cases, nor is it a good idea in some as, if a couple has not gotten to the point yet where they consciously decide to marry and have children marriage then will likely result in a difficult, perhaps even violent, family life and/or divorce for the child growing up. Often times, she is alone. More often than not, she is apprehensive. Often giving birth will require her to give up her career goals and life aspirations to stay home and take care of the child for several years usually until school/daycare age, about four or five years. This lack of work will lead to poor financial situations, especially if she is young at the time of the pregnancy and not far enough into her desired career path to be able to afford daytime childcare and/or extended maternity leave. Even after this, breaking back into the workforce can be difficult. An extended leave from the workforce may mean she needs to go onto welfare or a similar social program during that time, and that her career training may be dated or irrelevant when she does return.

A mother-to-be will usually have to give up or put on hold any aspirations in her career or schooling and make great financial and time sacrifices. Whether or not a woman is willing to make these sacrifices for a yetunborn child is her own choice, and it could boil down to guilty selfishness or bitter selflessness. Don't get me wrong, motherhood is a beautiful thing, but it is also very someone who should constantly remind us that there is more than one angle from which to look at the world. Now, this may get me in a little bit of trouble, but I regard Darwin in very much the same way that Christians difficult and not made any easier by our current cultural· and political situations. The other option is to give the baby up for adoption, but if everyone did that I think we'd have quite a few more orphans looking for homes than we do at present and their lives aren't as easy as Disney would have you believe. If pro-lifers want to make a real difference in the number of abortions happening today I would suggest that rather than heckling people with signs and pamphlets they put substantial work into creating or joining a campaign for free, universal childcare in Canada. By building daycares into existing workplaces young children could be kept near their parents during those crucial first years of development and attachment. Also, with technology advanced to the point where much can be accomplished online, perhaps it would be possible to open part-time positions which require minimal office hours to be opened to new mothers who would be able to work from view Jesus. In either case, I see a man who was a revolutionary. Someone who taught the world something new. I see a man whose views were seen as heresy. The story of Jesus Christ tells us home (at least for a, couple hours a day) and thus keep them active in their working lives and their training current. As it stands today, our culture is not very child friendly. It is frowned upon to nurse infants in public places, take them into many businesses, and even just toting one around you get reactions which you would not get were you alone. Those living in metropolitan districts caring for.young children frequently find themselves house-bound. What I would suggest culturally is a shift towards less extreme reactions towards children because ideally, you'd see them all the time. What I'm calling for is a family-oriented society which, rather than abhorring women who become accidentally pregnant, supports them by allowing them to work at the same time as they raise their children. That'd be novel. With this kind of support in place the choice for life might be a bit easier to make, and isn't that what you pro-lifers want? r I of an innocent man who was crucified for bringing a new philosophy to the world. I see Darwin's fate as much the same. The religious world has nailed Darwin to a cross, vilified him even though his only crime was bringing a new perspective to life. I see no difference between the lessons that are to be gained from either story. This week, as we celebrate the life and works of a man whose name has become an enemy of religion, I ask that we put aside our differences. Let's forget for a moment that our beliefs aren't all the same. Instead, let's remember that neither Christ nor Darwin were preaching conformity.

8 Opinion Pro-lifeStance Pointless

H.A.HOGETERP ARTS& UFEEDlTOR W here else but Abbotsford would a campus pro-life club be appropriate? Trinity Western, maybe, but Abbotsford is nestled in the heart of Canada's Bible Belt and it looks like we've got one and the abortion debate has heated up. Now, I've always thought pro-lifers were wasting hot air and funding that could be better put towards other causes, but before you burn the paper in anger, hear me out. As Rory Stevens of ASP put it in his opinion piece last week, the entire debate boils down to when we declare that sweet little globule of cells a human being, an issue that cannot be answered satisfactorily by science and so is left to philosophy or theology (or whatever -ology you use to determine such things) to decide. Either way, this is a choice made based upon a variety individual vantage points surrounding cognition (Stevens makes his opinion here clear, though I will allow for others) and the less tangible existence of selfhood or soul. We cannot make a law to abolish abortion based on moral consensus of murder as wrong (as is the general consensus) and abortion existing as a form of murder because there is not agreement on this second fact. Rather this is a matter of opinion and therefore something which a woman with an unplanned foetus growing inside of her will have to address. Her choice to make, if you will. Yes, that's called pro-choice. I do not pretend that it is an easy choice, nor should it be, but it should be hers to make and hers alone. Should she go through with an abortion it will be her own God or other Deity or black mark on her karma that she will have to answer to her own peace to make with the otherworld.

Ignatieff's next step has been to start touring out West, in the forgotten realm of Liberal ridings. With this he makes a move straight from the "Politics for Dummies" playbook, trying to fabricate a grassroots campaign with "real people." So his first two steps as the follow up to Dion are to pretend the· coalition idea never happened, then to try to win some of the most entrenched Conservative votes in the country. He started off in Saskatchewan, apologizing for how the Liberal party has shrugged off Western Canada since as early as the 1980's, and promised to remedy that in the future. So, to recap: Iggy just proved that the Liberal leash is still short, and held by the Conservative party, but now he's making blatant stabs at trying to pick up the scraps from the Conservatives' feast of voters in the West. There is a redeemable Liberal party, and there are ways to nurture those redeeming points. Unfortunately Ignatieff didn't seem to get that memo, and is instead endorsing an 'everything must go' fire sale.

WORD NERD

Bad English drives me crazy. The rampant spelling errors in newspapers, store-front advertisements, college textbooks (!), and in numerous other places are almost too much for me to handle. I realize that, in writing this, I am speaking to a small percentage of the population. I say this because it is becoming increasingly apparent to me that almost no one gives a damn about using the language properly. I can also deduce that those who aren't bothered by it either: a) can't spell; or b) just don't care. I can spell, and I do care. Because of this I feel as though it is my mission to police the language. My gift is my curse, though. It's great to possess that knowledge, but it has the potential to get me into trouble. I have a tendency to correct my loved ones and random strangers. Needless to say, they don't really appreciate it. Certain things I am sure of, and have no problem correcting. Among my major pet peeves are bad grammar, mispronunciations of easy words, and text talk. That's right, text talk: the scourge of society. It's so bad that some students (though none of you, I'm sure) are using text shorthand in essays these days. If.you are being graded on it, or writing anything where your credibility (or a decent grade) is at stake, please, for the

love of God get a dictionary! That's kids' stuff. It's pretty cut-and-dry, and yes, I do look down my nose at you. But as I get cockier about my abilities I realize that the lines are a little more blurry. There are numerous instances where there isn't necessarily one right convention, and the language is constantly evolving as well. I must say it kind of threw me for a loop when I sat in a class and heard my professor mispronounce-or so I thought-a word. I wasn't sure ·what to make of it, honestly. I was sure there had to be a logical solution. ("No one's perfect, not even teachers." Seriously .if you pay any attention to the goings-on of the world you understand what it is to have your faith in authorities erode.) But as it turns out the word in question can be pronounced both ways. See? Now nobody has to feel silly. Although I kinda prefer having a right way and a wrong way. It feels less hokey when there's a definite answer. Iggy Goes Down MICHAELLONG NEWSAND OPINIONSEDITOR O h Michael Ignatieff. Your party was a stone's throw away from holding a majority coalition government a few months ago, and now you've brought it back to a place of being the Conservative Party's passive pet project. Congratulations. Granted, a recession isn't the best time to try to hold another unwanted election. However, when your party was up in arms enough to try to oust the government in December based on their inability to adapt their economic platform accordingly, it comes across as a genuine tuck tail and run tactic to now endorse the Conservative budget proposal. Sticking with your previous assertion that the Conservative strategy is ill equipped to guide our nation through this economic downturn, an unwanted election seems the least of our worries. If it is the Liberal point of view that the Conservatives are only making things worse, then your top priority should be chasing them off Capital Hill as fast as possible. Let the bitterness of another election settle in the assumed dust of your economic plan that will save us all. To rail against the Conservative platform, then a month later, quietly fall in line, hurts both the proposal of the Liberal platform being superior, and the likelihood of right-leaning Canadians voting Liberal in the future. The Conservatives made a few changes to bump their budgetary proposal up to "slightly acceptable" for the rest of the parties in Parliament, and then the Liberals hop on board, with only a few MP's being allowed to vote against it.

You used to study visual arts before fashion, how has that helped you? It's been a big influence on me. It's inspired me compositionally and it's given me a better understanding of colour the relationships of colours. So, you see fashion as art as well. Wearable art? Definitely. I think that's why I'm so drawn to unique pieces and the textiles themselves because they are the bridge between art and fashion. Anything else you want to say?

The winner was Tasha Becker, an English major in her 3rd year at UFV. Her poetry was unabashedly raw and her delivery was haunting. This was the first ever slam that she has participated in and upon winning she said, " I think it's super cool that UFV has a slam show it was a really fun night and I'm really glad I got to participate and I'm really looking forward to some pizza!" The slams are sponsored by UFV Theatre, Library and English Department. They are planning a third slam sometime around April Fool's Day and this one will most likely meet at Casey's as did the first one that took place last fall. The sponsors would like to encourage as many people as possible to come out to hear the spoken word. Ray de Kroon ended with two quotes that sum up his belief on why poetry slams are important, "Slam drags poetry out of the anthologies and puts it back into the street where it belongs it pries poetry out of the white-knuckled grip of the intellectuals and literary critics and back into the hands of the artists."

UFV FashionDepartmentoff to Montreal

ANGELAOSTRIKOFF STAFFWRITER O n Friday February 13th the Chilliwack campus theatre hosted UFVs second poetry slam. About sixty-five people attended the event and at least a third were over fifty; the slam was open to not only UFV students and staff, but the general public as well. Poetry slamming refers to a competition in which poets recite original pieces of work and try to make it through to each round in hopes of winning. Judges are typically members of the audience chosen at random, before the slam starts. Poetry slams officially began in the late S0's, although poetry in the mouths of the artists has been something that has no real time-stamp. This slam was themed "Love Hurts" and it encouraged love and angst poetry although that theme was not mandatory. About half of the poets were over the age of 50 and it was really neat to see that love and heartbreak are universal experiences. The UFV slam followed similar rules as last time: there were 12 poets, 5 judges and 3 minutes to slam. Ray de Kroon, an English major in his 4th year at UFV, was the MC, also treated the audience to a sampling of his poems. He warned the audience that some material may contain adult content, and that only poems promoting intolerance or hatred would not be allowed. He also encouraged the audience to participate as much as possible, and gave us the job of reprimanding any poets who went over their 3-minute time limit by saying in unison, "You rat bastard, you're ruining it for everyone. But it was well worth it!" Ray also made it clear that although the points were there to sift poets from one round to the next, that at the end of the day, "Points are not the point, the point is poetry." After the original twelve poets performed and were judged there was a long intermission while the scores were tallied. There was a tie for 5th place, and so six poets slammed in the second and final round. After the points from the first and the second round were combined, a winner was declared.

So first things, first, I know you're going to Montreal, but what exactly is it that you've won? I haven't won anything yet. Basically, everyone in second year fashion design had to design an outfit based on eighteen fabrics that were supplied to us by Telio, a fabric manufacturing company, based out of Montreal and they put on this competition every year for second year fashion students. This is the first year they've opened it up for students outside of Quebec and for part of our requirement for our design course we had to enter this competition. For all of the students that designed an outfit, judges were chosen from industry people in Vancouver. They chose seven [from UFV] which were sent to Montreal to be judged by the Telio judges and from there the finalist were chosen. That's two of you, right? Yup, myself and Cadey and there were 25 finalists chosen from across Canada. When is it that you're leaving for Montreal? It's in March, the fashion show is on March fifth. It's part of Montreal fashion week, so we're getting an all expense trip paid to Montreal during fashion week and the outfits are going to be in a runway show. They chose the models and everything. They're judged again and the winner is given 3500 dollars. So, you can't show us your design before the competition? No, it's not allowed. How long were you working on this project? I found out that I made it into the finals on December first, and a week after that we had to order the fabrics, based on the design we had to figure how much and which fabrics to use, started drafting a pattern, they supplied us with some measurements but it was very vague. We sent the finished garment off on February the third it had to be there on the fifth! Can you say what your inspiration was? The theme was earth, air, water and fire elements. We had to design based on what it is to be Canadian and Canadian values, with the theme in mind. I chose the theme fire. Not literally, I chose it as in the leaves in the fall. There was a song I was inspired by that talks about leaves being like embers. For the outfit I actually dyed the fabrics [that were supplied byTelio.] What fabrics did you end up using? This is a wool-viscos blend, and I used silk and also a sorta' metallic faux-leather. It's a billowing blouse with a really structured jacket and then a really tight waste corset and slim pants. I submitted my design with these dyed swatches and they accepted them even though I altered them. It's an Emily Original. Yeah! It started brown and I took it and warped it. So basically no one else is going to have the same fabric. So you think you have a pretty good chance of winning? Yeah. Well, I really love my design and I'm pretty pumped about the whole thing. I've been feeling so positive about this thing from the beginning. What exactly in the fashion world do you want to get into? I want to be a designer with a focus on textiles. After I finish the fashion program here, I'm going to Capilano and I'm going to study just textiles, with an artistic focus. I would like to make original clothing with handSlammers Aren't Just For Pogs

Speaking of things that are really weird, whoever though we'd hear a song by the Electric Six on a Subaru commercial but there it is, incredibly catchy disco-rock and all. There it is, leaving you and your friends to ask again and again, is that Jack White singing backing vocals? My vote is definitely yes, though White constantly denies it. Who sings about Taco Bells and gets "Jack White" to sing "Danger! Danger! High Voltage!"? True masters of song craft, that's who.

What else can do you do but "fill a bag with cigarettes and apple wine hit the road again at 10 mintues to 9," and blaze down the highway in a convertible with what else but EODM's classic "San Berdoo Sunburn" playing nice and loud? This song is a great send up to summertime happiness with a vague ghost of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky." Of course, any band with Josh Homee in it is gonna' have a side that is a little less sunny. Lines like "Me and this girl I think she's pregnant and we're headed to San Bernardino" and "Tapping time with one good finger, I got this girlfriend and she's a swinger" prove that point. Either way this track is not one you wanna' miss. well. The average Gamer is between 20-35 with about 10 years of gaming experience. It sounds really good, but it's hard to tell what's different. Now here again is trap of spin off albums you're either not as good as the original or too similar to justify a new group, not that it's bad. Once all the songs on this album ended up falling into one of those two categories I kept asking myself why this couldn't have been as a really excellent follow-up to the Black Keys last album Attack and Release instead of a hit and miss Auerbach solo effort.

playing games. There have even been numerous reports of people literally dying from exhaustion and dehydration while playing. I am in no way suggesting that anyone who plays video games has an addiction, but like in any culture, there are the extremists. Video gamers have long been synonymous with geek, but that is a stereotype that is shattering; many celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg and Jack Black have all admitted to being gamers. Speaking of things you'll never do where or what is Pavonis Mons? Thanks to Wikipedia I can tell you it is "the middle of three volcanoes (collectively known as Tharsis Montes) on the Tharsis bulge near the equator of the planet Mars. PAULFALARDEAU STAFFWRITER I have always wondered what the <lea is with side projects of bands. They are seldom better than the original band, though sometime they are unique and genuinely different, City and Colour for instance is, for better or worse, a completely different product. Sometimes the new band is good enough to stand alone even, like The Racontuers. Most times though, the side project sounds like rehashed half developed ideas that the person or persons couldn't get away with playing in their main band think The Jerry Garcia Band. It's the kind of thing you listen to and say "Fine but you'll never be as good as when you were with the Dead, Jerry." Of course there is always the powerplay side band; you know, the -- ·' " side project that becomes the main project. Sometimes this is obviously a money making move (see Matt Good) and sometimes it just happens. In these cases I often wonder if the other member or members of the original band even knew what was coming. Perhaps one day your band's lead just starts showing up late for practice, smelling of other bands' distinct musk, humming tunes that you have never practiced, then, all ofa sudden he is releasing a new album with a new set of friends and your band is over because he doesn't need you any more. Either way, I always start listening to a new band with a wary ear and wonder just exactly what kind of spinoff is going on. Dan Auerbach's first solo album Keep It Hid starts off with a solo acoustic folk song that seems to fall heavily

The makers of WarCraft also have made the game StarCraft; it was released in 1998 and by 2007 has sold over nine million copies. The game is a science-fiction strategy game and every year in South Korea teams compete in televised competitions and have the chance to win scholarships. Video Game addiction in recent years, has been named a legitimate addiction, there are cases of people spending upwards of 16 hours a day licks and Auerbach's tortured voice. To showcase this talent in a new, unique and entertaining way is quite a challenge and this album doesn't do that as often as fans of The Black Keys would hope. So is this something you want to get? Black Keys completists and big fans should definitely pick it up. Casual fans will also probably enjoy it, but many will be left wondering what's with the name on the front cover. Maybe Dan Auerbach should have kept this hid; it would have been better as the Keys sixth, not Auerbach's first.

Speaking of things that aren't quite human, this hidden gem off David Bowie's masterpiece, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, about a sex-crazed alien rockstar (it is simultaneously more and less corny than it sounds), is the song that every Indie rock loving kid wishes he had written but, let's face it, never will. There are too many epic swells, too many perfectly played guitar licks, Bowie's voice is at its peak, it's too perfect. Just when you thought you couldn't stand how well done this song is, you remember how friggin' well done this song is. get lost in, it is essentially a game of good against evil, or in this case Alliance verses Horde. It is massively multi-player which means that at any given time you are able to interact with thousands of other players from all around the world.

Speaking of great driving songs, why can only humans have the fun? Why couldn't it be say, a spider? He'd drive a little blue dune buggy right? Sure, The Presidents were hardly master musicians, but the lyrics to this song are priceless and fun to sing along to. The whole thing really comes across as a hillbilly take on surf music. This is the kind of music that you don't need to take too seriously, yet when you really listen in the song is incredibly catchy and fun. Why not give in, who cares if "Gotta' sassy chassy sparkle in the sun" aren't the best lyrics ever written.

W hen many people think back to the last generation of consoles, many remember Halo: Combat Evolved. Sure, this was during a time when Microsoft made controllers for giants, and the only way to play against others was when you linked your consoles. Yet, what Halo contributed to first-person shooters is near limitless. Everything from memorable gameplay to ground-breaking new mechanics, Halo defined console gaming for so many. So with the near limitless popularity of Halo, it would only seem logical to try something new with the classic first-person shooter. The first experiment with Halo is Halo Wars. What was before a first-person shooter is now a realtime strategy (RTS) game. Not only has Ensemble Studios taken a risk by not doing a Halo game in a different genre,

Some units account for 20 or even 9 units, meaning that a im super powerful vehicle costs you about 20 sol(DTS) ·2s, but it's also a risk in itself doing a real-time strategy game on a console. For the most part, this is done fairly decently, but it's not without its hiccups. The one thing I worried about most is the controls. A real-time strategy game is usually one that requires controlling an economy and an army. Usually making use of your entire keyboard; so to streamline that massive sense of control onto a control pad runs the risk of losing some of that fluidness. What Ensemble did with the controls is probably as best as a console R.T.S. can do. The controls are fluid and simple, often leaving you in control while leaving diers. Often then the game boils down to you wanting to do more, but realizing that you have to cap your army off at 1 the limit. Not so much fun in the end. Overall, the game is fun, but it has its flaws that make the game somewhat limited, and even in some ways, nonresembling of a real-time strategy game. So while many purists of the genre, people who grew up with Starcraft and Age of Empires, might want to pass on this simplified RTS, many fans of Halo will find this game to be an easy to get into RTS, even if in the broader spectrum it's limited for a real-time strategy game.

some miniscule tasks to the computer. Sadly you can't create squads or hotkey units, options that are usually available on a typical PC real-time strategy game. What every Halo fan wants to also know is: How much of Halo is in Halo Wars? Quite a bit actually; from the hulking Scorpions to the powerful Spartans, everything is there in full form. There are new units that also are pretty interesting and fun. Although, a lot of people will probably stick with what they know is tried and true. Plus, in terms of making the two playable sides appealing, each are tailored for certain players. The UNSC can create powerful units, but often taking some time and usually for a higher cost, meanwhile the Covenant can produce many more units on the dime, but typically at the expense of power. So for everyone out there, there is an option. A few complaints I had with the game come from playing against the computer. For some reason, the voice-over tells you what the enemy is doing. If they take over an outpost, it'll tell you. Now this can be to ease people unfamiliar with the genre into an RTS, but it also seems like a cop out for purists; the challenge then doesn't become as much about strategy as it does become more about following what the computer suggests.

ever, injects her with some Hollywood pre-teen girl attitude from the start, acting like a snobby jerk to the first kid she meets in her new neighbourhood, and being an ungrateful brat to her parents. This obviously makes her a pretty unsympathetic character, especially when compared to her literary counterpart. That being said, the film overall is definitely worth watching for it's quirky humour, clever story, and She is more of an animalistic hunter than a suave killer. She catches her victims by surprise, than simply rips into them. She does not dispose of the bodies, but has her man-servant try to hide the bodies. With another director, the sheer ineptitude of Eli and her servant would have come across as humorous, but Alfredson makes it seem more creepy than funny. Eli is a child and she kills because she has to, most of all for its aesthetic value. Viewers who haven't read the book will take away a charming, and stylised, if sometimes dark, film. If Neil Gaiman fans can put all wild expectations aside and take the movie as its own entity, they can enjoy it as well, even if simply for the stunning visual experience. As far as movie adaptations go, Coraline is pretty good. not because she wants to. Oskar accepts Eli's violence. He fantasizes about killing his tormentors from school, but in reality he is a very gentle boy. He refuses to fight back when he is bullied; in fact, he willingly accepts the physical abuse from his classmates, which eventually puts his life at risk. Oskar's gentle nature makes his friendship with Eli tragic. If Eli wasn't a vampire, this could be a love story about two young and lonely children. Alfredson's careful direction keeps the story from venturing too far into the realm of horror, but there definitely are moments when you feel your stomach churn. Yet these moments add to Eli and Oskar's unassuming friendship; Oskar accepts Eli, despite her funny smell and raunchy diet. Let the Right One In may be a horror film, but it's definitely not a cheesy horror film. Unlike many recent horror films, there are no sexy actors. In fact, with the exception of Eli and Oskar, every character in this film is quite ugly. This adds to the overall gritty and realistic feel of the film. Hedebrant and Leandersson both give very strong performances and the dark atmosphere makes the film seem more melancholy than frightening. This is a very smart film, despite the blood and gore.

tlety of the book with making both Wybie and Coraline irritatingly talkative, which is only emphasized by Coraline's voice actor (Dakota Fanning) being horrendous. One of the major gripes I had with this movie is that the filmmakers made Coraline's character irritating, egocentric, and inept. The book's protagonist was quieter and resourceful, only coming out of her shell nearer to the end of the book. The movie howtion that causes her to bleed out of every orifice of her body if she enters a home without first being invited in (hence the name of the film). Eli is a vampire. Eli's violence is very graphic. The fact that she sucks blood is not sugarcoated whatsoever. But Eli is not a calculating, evil killer; her victims are mostly random, people that just happen to be near her when she's hungry.

Coraline

ForeignMovieReview Let the Right One In

DARCYDUREAU STAFFWRITER A s a long time fan of the writings of Neil Gaiman, the news of his dark and unique children's book Coraline coming to the big screen was the cause of both excitement and apprehension. It held the potential of a being a wonderfully stylized animated film that both children and adults could enjoy, yet there was a large likelihood that Hollywood would get to it first and transform it into crap. Considering the book is extremely dark, and much of its charm relies on the introverted and subtle protagonist, the possibility of significant editing for a film adaptation was a real and worrisome thought for myself and other like-minded Gaiman dorks. Keeping in mind that the vast majority of movie-goers are not huge dorks who read everything produced by Neil Gaiman, however I will try to be as unbiased as possible. The movie follows the adventure of strong-willed and imaginative 11-year-old Coraline who recently moved to a new apartment with her parents. While her parents are wrapped up in their work, a bored Coraline takes it upon herself to explore h,er new .surro.un_dings~uncovering a door which upon entering takes her to a second version of her apartment. She soon finds that this new apartment not only includes nicer furniture and better toys, but also "improved" versions of her parents, the only difference being their curious button eyes, who listen better, cook better, and let her do everything she likes. This, in standard fairytale fashion, ends up not being all as it seems, sending Coraline and her talkative friend Wybie on a dark and whimsical adventure. Aesthetically, the movie is stunning. Directed by Henry Selick, the film captures the same whimsical beauty that only stop motion can provide as his previous film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The stylistic choices are a treat as well, with even minor characters such as Miss Spink and Miss Forcible being hilariously designed and animated. The movie is also being shown in certain theatres in 3D, an innovative usage of the technology to add a new depth to the genre of 3D stop-motion. The storytelling itself is adapted fairly well for the screenplay. The story in the book is primarily told through the thoughts of Coraline, and since that would be fairly difficult to pull off in a 100 minute long movie, a character _named Wybie is added. While this addition makes sense, they overcompensate the sub-

SONJASZLOVICSAK STAFFWRITER Lately it seems as if vampires have been given a rather dashing portrayal in movies'. From the handsome vampires of Twilight to the aristocratic vampires of the Underworld trilogy, the essential scariness of vampires seems to have been eradicated. They are no longer blood sucking demons which rip the throats of their victims; instead they have become sex symbols that drink blood out of glasses like red wine. Thankfully, the Swedish film Let the Right One In was created to remind us all that vampires are terrifying. Director Tomas Alfredson shows the gritty side of the vampire life. These vampires are by no means sexy; they are ordinary people that are forced to suck blood. The movie is based on the novel Let Me In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. He also wrote the screenplay for the film adaption, so the dark atmosphere of the novel is preserved quite well in the film. The story revolves around a twelve year old boy named Oskar (Kare Hedebrant) and his new friend Eli (Lina Leandersson). The two form an innocent friendship, with a basis familiar to most movie-goers; Oskar is bullied at school but makes friends with his new neighbor, Eli. Oskar and Eli are both isolated. Oskar's parents ignore him and he has no friends at school, Eli has no family except for a strange man-servant, and so Oskar and Eli's loneliness brings them together. Yet something just isn't right about Eli. She's too pale (keep in mind, this is a Swedish film everyone is pasty), she can't eat without vomiting and she doesn't go out during the day. She is extremely intelligent for a twelve year old. And she has this strange condi-

W hen reading an English translation of any text, there is almost a guarantee that something will be lost along the way. This is the case with Henning Mankel's Before the Frost. Originally written in Swedish and translated by Ebba Segerberg into English, Menkel's previously highly praised narrative fails to deliver. Before the Frost picks up the character of Kurt Wallander, a police officer who is now joined by his daughter and aspiring officer, Linda. The plot, which has Linda running all over Sweden and Norway trying to solve the mystery of her missing friend holds little originality and fails to keep the reader intrigued. As the mystery unfolds to include a fanatically religious cult looking to make some sacrifices and teach some lessons, one can't help but recall the numerous other places that this plot has appeared. With a devastatingly predictable beginning, middle and end, Before the Frost doesn't even carry enough suspense to make the reader forget that some Goosebumps novels had more ingenuity. The English narrative gives the reader one less reason to get past the first few chapters. With such painfully flawed grammar and syntax the reader must believe that either the translator was using a pocket dictionary, or that Menke! himself learned his writing skills from Christopher Pike. There are even a few gaping plot holes and glaring contrivances that make the reader grimace. The entire plot of the novel actually takes place in the months before Linda officially starts work with the police department. This means that she is simply drawn into the investigation through a combination of emotional involvement and family connections. The baffling thing however, is that the police department sees no problem with this and blatantly allows her to continue contributing her services to the case. Personally, I hope the sequel to the novel involves the case being thrown out of a court of law due to the fact that most of the evidence was gathered by someone with no authority whatsoever to do so, without warrant. Before the Frost is a mediocre novel; it lacks inventive plot, unique characters, and insightful narrative. If you're looking for a mystery novel in which you are thrown into a heartracing story that leaves you guessing, if you're looking for a book that combines plot with narrative to truly make you think, bypass this novel. If you're looking for an easy read that tells y_ouall the answers from the getgo, at least go with something that breaks up the monotony with some sword fighting and sex.

I would recommend that you make it your purpose to make everyone around you all wet and silly looking. Build up your water balloon supplies and take advantage of this rare alignment of the stars. Do

Aquarius (January 20th February 18th) There is a terrible song about your sign. You should be ashamed of yourself. I am personally on my way to confront you with a bucket of water for being so obnoxiously inspirational.

Do not, however, perform these sub-celestial nude gyrations on a rainy night. Your skin will get all slippery and you will slide around a lot and make a general nuisance of yourself.

Cancer (June 21st July 21st) Be aware of fat men in rubber suits. They will try to abduct you and force you to go to clown college. You will have to jump, using your parachute (for the first time) as a life saver. This will not work, however. You will get all caught up in it and you will drown. If you choose not to go skydiving, you will die in a boring way at the end of a long boring life. Sorry 'bout that.

Scorpio (October 23rd November 21st) You will choke, very publicly, on bottled water. You will be so embarrassed that you sue the company that bottled the water and they will send their evil henchmen after you. They will soak your crotch in water and force you to walk among people who will laugh at you until your face explodes from shame.

TERRY SINGH SPORTS& HEALTHEDITOR This Saturday, the UPC returns to the 02 arena in London, England for UPC 95. The card features the lightweight debut of The Ultimate Fighter I winner, Diego "The Nightmare" Sanchez. Sanchez will be taking on The Ultimate Fighter 2 winner Joe "Daddy" Stevenson in the main event of the evening. Fighting in the original Ultimate Fighter reality show as a middleweight, Sanchez dominated from the beginning, destroying Kenny Florian in the finals via TKO. Dropping to welterweight to begin his UPC career, Diego was on the fast track to a title shot, amassing wins over veterans such as Brian Gassaway, Nick Diaz, John Alessio, Karo Parisyan and Joe Riggs. Unfortunately, the momentum that Sanchez had garnered was halted against Josh Koscheck at UPC 69. Battling a staph infection which was originally thought to be hepatitis, Sanchez lost a lacklustre unanimous decision. Sanchez's next fight was against Koscheck's training partner at the American Kickboxing Academy, Jon Fitch. Fitch used his massive size and wrestling ability to smother Sanchez, earning a razor thin split decision victory. Having lost two fights in a row, split from his long time training camp in Team Jackson, Sanchez found himself on the long road to redemption. Wins over journeyman fighters in David Bielkheden and Luigi Fioravanti did little to position Sanchez for a shot at the welterweight title, but they did showcase some improving striking skills to go along with his already stellar cardio and grappling game. As one of the smaller welterweights in the division and realizing that a cut to lightweight would be much more appealing at his current age (26) as opposed to north of age 30, Sanchez has set his sights on becoming a champion at two weight classes. Stevenson has used an excellent grappling game, particularly his excellent guillotine choke to overcome a loss to Josh Neer early in his UPC career. Four straight victories catapulted Stevenson into a lightweight title match against B.J. Penn. Unfortunately for Stevenson, his lack of development in the striking game was exposed by Penn who cut open Stevenson open badly en route to a second round victory at UPC 80. After choking out Gleison Tibau, Stevenson was once again stopped, this time at the hands of the current number one contender in the lightweight division, Kenny Florian. Stevenson has proven to be a game contender in the lightweight division, but has fallen short in his biggest fights thus far. His excellent grappling game should be neutralized by Sanchez's equally impressive grappling skills. With the development of Sanchez's striking skills, he should hold an edge on the feet. The x-factor in this fight will undoubtedly be how Sanchez reacts to his first cut to lightweight. Numerous fighters have had lacklustre performances in their first fight after a large cut (Mike Swick and Brandon Vera). With Sanchez's vaunted cardio and relentless pace being one of his greatest strengths, this could be a dangerous fight for him if the weight cut saps his cardio. Stevenson is far from an easy fight for Sanchez to establish himself in the lightweight division. Stevenson will surely attempt to test Sanchez's gas tank early in the fight. With neither fighter having a strong wrestling base, expect the fight to be a kickboxing exhibition early. With Sanchez having the crisper striking skills, expect him to score points and potentially hurt Stevenson en route to a victory. Also featured on the card is a middleweight bout between Nate "The Great" Marquardt and Wilson Gouveia. Sporting a 6-2 record in the UPC, Gouveia has finished his opponents in all of his victories. Gouveia is a solid grappler and has developed a strong striking game as well. Unfortunately, a TKO loss to Goran Reljic derailed the possibility of a title shot for him. Gouveia likely has his work cut out for him with Nate Marquardt. Marquardt is a world class grappler who also sports a great all around game. His work with Team Jackson has elevated his game significantly. Marquardt also sports a 6-2 UPC record, but his split decision loss to Thales Leites was the result of point deductions as opposed to a bad performance on Marquardt's part. His other loss was to current middleweight champion Anderson Silva, there is certainly no harm in that. I expect Marquardt to put in a great performance in his quest for another title shot. In another middleweight bout, Demian Maia and Chae! Sonnen face off. This is Sonnen's first fight in the UPC since 2006, he sports a 1-2 record in the octagon. Sonnen is coming up from the now defunct middleweight division in the WEC. Sonnen is an experienced wrestler, but his game plays right into Maia's hands. Maia is not just a world class grappler, he is one of the best in the world. Sonnen was submitted via arm bar to a clearly out of shape and dis-

On defence, a healthy Sarni Salo was a blessing for the Canucks. He has been great on the power play and at even strength he has stepped up his game as well. Let's hope he can stay relatively healthy for the remainder of the year though. Shane O'Brien has responded at least temporarily to his benching, providing steady and physical play for the Canucks. After what seemed like an eternity of struggling, Alex Edler has regained the form that saw him ink a big contract extension this past off-season. Kevin Bieksa hasn't regained the form he had in his rookie season, but he is playing better and isn't a complete liability on the blue line. Mattias Ohlund and Willie Mitchell have been steady as usual. While the defence and forward group are playing some of their best hockey of the season, Roberto Luongo is still attempting to regain the magic he had in November. Clearly the groin injury messed up his rhythm and timing considerably. Canuck fans have been accustomed to Luongo bailing out this team, so at the very least it is a nice change to see the Canucks offence bailing out some Luongo mistakes. With plenty of games remaining on the schedule, Luongo certainly has time to round into shape, but if the Canucks are to solidify a playoff spot and make a deep playoff run they need Luongo at his best.

interested Paulo Filho in the WEC. He won the subsequent rematch via unanimous decision, but Filho not only failed to make weight, but he was exhibiting troubling behaviour inside the octagon. Namely, Filho appeared to be talking to himself or someone on a few occasions. Failing to finish an absent minded fighter like that is troubling. Once the fight hits the ground, expect Maia to submit Sonnen fairly quickly.

Paul Kelly vs. Troy Mandaloniz

THOUGH ~o ealth jority of his fights, Koscheck did well in not getting finished or brutalized during the fight. Koscheck showed incredible heart against the extremely explosive Alves at UFC 90 as well. Little is known of Paulo Thiago beyond him b_eingprimarily a grappler. With Koscheck's wrestling credentials he should be able to keep the fight on the feet, and utilize his constantly improving striking skills. Expect him to come out aggressively and finish this fight early.
