Sector analysis
Brazil: an opportunity for suppliers worldwide Ranking among the world’s top 10 economies with a total area equivalent to Europe, Brazil is a key player on the world stage, particularly in the energy sector, where, with a population exceeding 200 million, it’s the third largest energy consumer in the Americas. The country has 12.6bn barrels of proven reserves and, thanks to growing output from offshore pre-salt fields, is now Latin America’s top oil producer. Brazil’s power mix is also one of the world’s cleanest – about 70% of its electricity is produced from renewable sources.

a
The oil and gas sector is a vital element in this recovery process, accounting for approximately 10% of Brazil’s GDP. Petrobras has pledged to invest US$74.1bn by 2021, with a strong focus on the development of pre-salt reserves. The company has earmarked US$60.6bn for exploration and production (E&P) projects and expects its oil and gas output to increase from 2.62m barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMboe) in 2017 to 3.41MMboe/d in 2021. FPSOs are the production unit of choice for many Petrobras projects, and key tenders are underway. The entrance of new E&P players to Brazil’s oil-rich pre-salt province provides further proof of the country’s recovery. Petrobras is no longer required to be the sole operator of pre-salt fields, which has cleared the way for international oil companies to acquire new assets in the country. Shell and Statoil are now key operators in the pre-salt area.
Photo © 2003-2018 Shutterstock, Inc
Despite this privileged position, Brazil has experienced mixed fortunes in recent years. Following a period of rapid economic growth and various pre-salt discoveries, in 2015 the country was hit by an unprecedented recession which dampened investor confidence and seriously undermined the economic and social gains obtained at the beginning of the decade. Fortunately, Brazil’s perspectives are improving. The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is set to rebound in 2017, with a 0.7% growth. Inflation has been tamed and interest rates have been cut to 7%, greatly reducing borrowing costs. Market-oriented reforms targeting local content and labour laws have been approved and other measures are being pushed through Congress in a bid to make the country more competitive.
The power, nuclear and renewables (PNR) sectors are also relevant for Brazil’s growth and provide a wealth of opportunities. The country’s latest 10-year Energy Plan estimates that 64GW of new capacity will be built by 2026, requiring an investment of US$73bn. Renewables are a priority – new wind, solar, biomass and small hydro facilities correspond to 35GW of the government’s forecast. These sectors are eagerly anticipating two power auctions scheduled for December 2018, which will feature 2,768 projects seeking power purchase agreements. Doing business in Brazil still presents challenges, but the country’s latest push towards a market-friendly environment for energy investors is an opportunity for suppliers worldwide. The UK supply chain is ideally suited to benefit from these business opportunities and contribute with their expertise. Pietro Ferreira Regional Analyst, South America pietro.ferreira@the-eic.com

Balmoral’s new boltless restrictor set to slash installation costs
Balmoral Offshore Engineering has launched a new product for the SURF sector which it claims will reduce current installation times by up to 80%. The company has extended its range of polyurethane bend restrictors to include a boltless version (patent pending) in response to industry demands for project cost savings and as part of a wider product improvement drive. Designed as interlocking elements, restrictors prevent over-bending at the interface between flowlines, umbilicals, cables and rigid structures such as wellhead connections, J-tube exits, rigid pipe crossovers and PLET connections by mechanically locking up. Although there are products on the market that claim to be boltless, Balmoral says none of them actually are. The intent, therefore, was to create a product that provides a practical boltless solution that fully addresses the shortcomings of existing products.
The new boltless restrictor is capable of: rapid assembly to minimise installation times; performing on flying leads, umbilicals, risers and flowlines; enduring long-term loading conditions; enduring hot, wet conditions; and managing large bending loads. The company’s product R&D Manager, Dr Aneel Gill, said, ‘It’s vital that new products address the issues raised by those using them. In the case of our boltless restrictor, industry-leading performance is retained while offering significantly reduced installation time and costs. In other words we have achieved bolted restrictor performance with boltless simplicity.’ To ensure the new restrictor’s suitability for global deployment, Balmoral adheres to independently approved design methodologies that are fully compliant to API 17L 1&2, while materials selected for the production process are also certified to API 17L 1&2.

What our delegates have said
‘I felt the visit gave me a great opportunity to understand the business climate in country from both the oil and gas perspective and the general market needs of the country. Certainly, attending as part of the delegation gave me access to areas, companies and organisations that as an individual would not be possible. The ‘busy’ aspect of the time in country meant that we were able to both cover a decent spectrum of subjects as well as justify the costs to our respective companies.’ ‘This was a wonderful introduction to a new country, with useful dialogue with clients, government and the president!’ ‘The EIC provided a full and relevant schedule with the opportunity to meet with key contacts within our industry segment.’ ‘The delegation was very useful to get an understanding of the country’s petrochemical and infrastructure market. Getting in there early and seeing the project sites are key for us to develop our bidding strategy and local contacts.’

Spotlight on technology LB Bentley Ltd
www.lb-bentley.com
THROUGH CONDUIT GATE VALVE Bespoke small bore subsea valves and actuators are LB Bentley’s specialism. Its engineered solutions are deployed in the world’s most extreme subsea environments. These pioneering products incorporate metal-to-metal sealing and all its valves use adaptations of this patented technology – this approach delivers innovative products with 30 years of field proven success.
Unique approach
Field proven success
Qualification
LB Bentley realised that a robust sealing capability was paramount, so it designed the Through Conduit Gate Valve with full metal to metal sealing technology throughout the flow-bore.
To this day the design and sealing technology is truly unique, with 30 years of field-proven-success it’s still the most reliable and durable small bore subsea valve available.
In the mid 80’s LB Bentley designed and patented the first small bore subsea gate valves for chemical injection applications on XMTs and manifolds. Prior to this it was common practice to utilise larger and heavier valves with adapted bores for chemical injection applications, but the industry drive was to reduce the overall size of an XMT.

The company’s valves have been designed with a split gate and fixed seat, as this is the only way to achieve a full metal-to-metal seal. With this design the faces are always in contact which ensures that contaminants are prevented from being trapped between the critical sealing surfaces.
Over the years LB Bentley has re-qualified the original design to satisfy developments in industry requirements, such as actuation, variation in trim and a broader temperature and pressure range. All its products are certified and compliant with API 6A and API17D 2nd edition at an increased number endurance cycles.

UK and Europe news Regional update
It is my pleasure to head up the newly structured UK and Europe team. With a business lead and events manager for each region our aim is to offer a broad programme Terri S ylveste r of events reflecting the industry’s opportunities and addressing the challenges. For those who’ve not yet met her, I’m delighted to introduce Jo Campbell as our Business Lead and Events Manager, based in Aberdeen. Jo has a strong network within the region and a clear understanding of membership organisations having held key roles in event management delivering high-end events for both the private and public sector. Prior to the EIC Jo worked at Oil & Gas UK, before taking up a membership position within the UK offshore industry body and more recently with EIC member Exova Ltd, gaining key insight and experience within the supply chain. As well as managing the regional events programme in Scotland, Jo is also responsible for the running of the Aberdeen office and available to support member companies. We are currently recruiting for a second Business Lead and Events Manager – interested applicants should visit www.the-eic.com/AboutUs/Careers.aspx March’s dual centred Export Showcase: Opportunities in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan was highly successful in both the London and Aberdeen venues. Baroness Nicholson, HM Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, was the keynote speaker with visiting guests from PSA LLP and KMGSSD who were joined by speakers from AAB, Fluor, KBR and Wood. One-to-one and networking opportunities proved very beneficial with feedback received saying, ‘Thank you for hosting this useful and excellent event; I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others.’ Events to look out for in April include: 17 April, central London venue tbc – Mozambique showcase with guest speakers from CB&I, Baker Hughes, a GE company and Agility – this event is already proving popular, book now to avoid disappointment. 18 April – Following the recent EIC Global Opportunities in the Nuclear Sector webinar we are running a Fundamentals of Nuclear training course, which provides an excellent introduction to this sector. Statoil set to become Equinor
Statoil has announced its intention to change its name to Equinor, a reflection of its transition to a broad-based energy company. It comes as part of Statoil’s strategic objective of increasing CAPEX investments into renewable energy to a 15-20% level by 2030. The strategy is exemplified by the recent submission of a 760MW bid in the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind tender. As oil and gas companies shift to renewables, their supply chains have opportunities to follow. Offshore wind projects allow for the application of transferable offerings such as drilling, cable and substation installations, and maintenance services. The transition is not limited to offshore wind, however, and includes moves such as Shell’s acquisition of NewMotion, one of Europe’s largest electric-vehicle charging companies, Total’s €237.5m investment into French renewables company Eren, and BP’s 43% interest in solar power developer Lightsource.

We have to start this month’s news by sending our heartiest congratulations to the winners (and sponsors – I can assure you they did win fair and square!) of our annual golf Terry W illis tournament: Triplefast. I’ve included a picture of the winners with Helen Aittis, the EIC star who put the whole event together. The main event this month will of course be EIC Connect Oil, Gas & Beyond. With another tremendous line up of participants and supporters, this year’s edition looks like being the best ever. We have ADNOC front and centre using the event as a platform to promote their newly announced In Country Value (ICV) programme. They will have their own specially designed stand within the exhibition area. We will also host McDermott who will provide a briefing on their latest partnership with CB&I. The recently formed partnership of SNC-Lavalin and Atkins will also be a popular feature. The ever-present Petrofac will naturally be on hand along with a number of their industry peers, making up a great programme of presentations. UKEF has recently established a base in the region and is taking the opportunity to let people know how they can assist SMEs with some of the financial challenges that they face in today’s competitive environment. Given all this, we very much look forward to welcoming all participants on the day. I’d like to welcome our newest office tenant, Wolf Safety Lamp Company, more commonly known as Wolf Tools. We wish them well and stand ready to assist in any way we can. Next month the EIC is managing the UK pavilion at the Iran Oil Show. While there are challenges to doing business in Iran, we believe that they are not insurmountable. Our EIC Country Report on Iran, which is free to download for members, provides a number of solutions for people contemplating taking advantage of the significant opportunities the Iranian market offers. This has since been followed up by a webinar which addressed financial issues. With this in mind, we look forward to what we know will be a very positive return. Finally, our Research Analyst Jude Anthony will get married at the end of the month on the 28th in his home state of Kerala in India. Please join us in extending our best wishes to the happy couple.
