Thailand investing in all energy sectors In February 2019, the Thai government announced plans to open its 21st round of bidding for offshore exploration and production of petroleum resources in June 2019. Round 21 had been scheduled for 2014 but was delayed due to an economic lull and political instability. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the Thai government anticipates an overall decline in output if there are no new discoveries in the next few years. Unless Thailand can attract more exploration investment and replace reserves at a faster rate, it will increasingly rely on natural gas imports.

Key projects for O&G, power and renewables sectors over the next two years

Oil and gas

Earlier this year, the national oil company PTT announced plans to increase natural gas supply over the next decade, supporting the government’s efforts to diversify the country’s coal-heavy energy mix. Plans for the five years through to 2023 call for US$5.2bn in investments, of which 44% will go to infrastructure needed to supply gas power plants. PTT has earmarked around US$4bn for pipelines and LNG terminal projects. The company will invest in a fifth gas pipeline, expected to begin operations by 2021 with the capacity to deliver 2bn cubic feet per day. The 415km pipeline will start at the Myanmar border in the west and stretch through north-eastern Thailand. US$1bn will be invested in developing a new LNG receiving terminal that can store up to 7.5m tonnes per annum. Meanwhile, PTT subsidiary PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) has made plans to develop the Bongkot and Erawan gas blocks to secure supplies for the next 10 years, which will allow it to maintain daily gas production of between 700 and 800m cubic feet.

Power

For the power sector, the state-owned energy firm EGAT is moving away from coal and is focused on gas-fired plants. There are several power plant projects that are currently being developed including Gulf MP Company’s 2,500MW Chonburi combined cycle gas turbine plant (scheduled to become operational in 2022), the 240MW Bangkok gas-fired cogeneration power plants 11 and 12 (operational in 2019) and EGAT’s 1,200MW South Bangkok combined cycle power plant (operational in 2019).

Renewables

In order to achieve energy sustainability, Thailand is making efforts to generate more electricity from renewable sources, anticipating robust capacity growth driven by solar and biomass. By 2037, the country aims to have increased renewables capacity to 27% of Thailand’s total power generation mix through the country’s Power Development Plan 2018-37, which reaffirmed that feed-in-tariffs will be available to new renewable energy projects. Thailand is planning to develop the world’s largest floating solar farms to power the country and boost its share of clean energy. EGAT will develop 16 floating solar farms in five provinces with a combined capacity of more than 2,700MW by 2037, which will account for one tenth of the country’s clean energy sources.

The government is keen to attract international investment into its energy sector and is developing new policies to make the country a sustainable energy investment hub. Thailand is certainly a growing market with immense opportunities for the UK supply chain. If you want to meet the biggest operators and contractors working on some of the GCC’s most important energy developments then you need to be at EIC Connect Oil, Gas & Beyond on 16 April at Abu Dhabi. At the time of going to print, it looks likely that UAE Energy Minister HE Suhail Al Mazrouei will once again be opening the event as well as meeting and greeting delegates and exhibitors. Joining ADNOC will be senior buyers and decision makers from McDermott, Petrofac, Wood and a whole host of other major companies active in the region. They’ll be providing project briefings as well as taking part in oneto-one meetings, where delegates can present their products and service directly to them. EIC Connect Oil, Gas & Beyond attracts procurement specialist from across the Middle East, who are keen to meet the exhibitors and find new tools and technology for their projects. On page 12 we give you a sneak preview of what some of the stands will have on offer. Looking a little further ahead, May means OTC. Once again, we’re hosting the UK pavilion and as always we’ve got a prime location in Hall D, guaranteeing high footfall. As well as a great location, we’ve organised lots of activities to make sure delegates make a beeline for the UK pavilion. We’ve got meet the buyer sessions on the Monday and Tuesday mornings – last year we hosted representatives from Pemex, SBM Offshore and TechnipFMC among other. These are followed by networking events – make sure you bring a good stock of business cards with you as these are always very busy. On Thursday EIC North and Central America Director Amanda Duhon will be giving a presentation on the opportunities available in those regions with a focus on the US and Mexico. Later the same day EIC Head of Americas Clarisse Rocha will be talking about how to win work in Brazil. Amanda and Clarisse will be joined at OTC by CEO Stuart Broadley and lots of other EIC staff. Can you tell our readers about your digital journey?

Over the years, Booth Welsh has adapted and evolved with changing technologies. A number of years ago we recognised that the changes derived from digitalisation were not just an evolution of sustaining technologies but disruption that would change the way in which industries operate completely. We knew we had to be positioned for this change. We therefore invested time and effort in developing and nurturing an innovation culture within our workplace. This allowed all of our teams to lead the digital charge and openly innovate both internally and externally with our clients, suppliers and academic partners for the benefit of our industry as a whole.

How do you work with clients on digitalisation?

As digital solutions are everchanging and bespoke, cocreation with our customers is at the centre of our approach. We don’t look for ways to use technology for the sake of it, it needs to truly add value and take onboard client drivers. For example, our clients require a right first-time approach and our digital workflow tool allows this exactly.

Whether it is to increase quality, safety, productivity, save costs or time, there are major benefits that can be achieved through the integrated use of digital technology and at a surprisingly low cost. Many of our clients have previously invested in the hardware and infrastructure required for digitalisation. It is our aim to unlock the advantage that they have within their existing assets. Often the initial starting point is our Baseline Assessment tool that allows us to analyse our clients current position and evaluate their digital readiness. From here we can set a road map and decide on next steps.

Marketing digital solutions is tough as they are not like traditional products. What’s the way forward?

It is true, as when you are breaking new ground there are often no tried and tested case studies which showcase results, but that is the nature of the fast-paced world we are in today. There is certainly an early adopter advantage to be had although we still find a lot of companies are apprehensive and unsure about where to begin. My advice would be to start small, prove success and then grow from that success.

What is the next stage in digital?

Digitalisation will change both our businesses and our people. The next step will see a change in culture. New ways of working and new jobs being created especially in areas such as data analysis and wider roles in IT. Any demarcation that exists currently in the areas of engineering technology, IT and business analysis will erode and new job titles will appear that will cover wider scopes and utilise new technology. Business culture will need to mirror this change with more flexible working methods and an increase in staff engagement to try and retain these new roles which will be in high demand. It is exciting times ahead!

Member news Cetix lands double award

Safety software and hardware integration specialist Cetix has won two contracts: one to supply an independent critical alarm system (ICAS) and another to provide a fully integrated control system for a pressure reduction system, both for undisclosed clients. For the ICAS, Cetix will be responsible for designing and configuring the complete system, including configuring the InTouch ICAS, SCADA system. The ICAS is a standalone network of sensors, monitoring points and alarms. The system will monitor defined operating parameters within high containment laboratories. It will provide alerts when conditions are outside normal operating parameters. The system has been designed to allow easy and low-cost expansion in the future allowing additional assets to be integrated into the system. The pressure reduction system will monitor and control a gas pipeline connecting two stations.

Cetix is responsible for designing and configuring the complete system, including configuring the InTouch SCADA system. The system will be fully tested at a Cetix site before being demonstrated to the client and then shipped to site.

Crondall Energy kicks off pipeline low energy coating study

Floating production and subsea specialist Crondall Energy has started work on a study looking at pipeline coatings with the aim of advancing industry understanding of the potential flow assurance benefits of internal coatings. The study is in partnership with Heriot-Watt University, The Oil & Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) and The Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) and will be led by Crondall Energy’s in-house Flow Assurance team in Aberdeen.

The methodology for the project will consist of a three-tiered approach. Initially data mining will be used to exploit existing published data coupled with expert knowledge to develop computational models of the polymeric coating behaviour, which will be analysed and evaluated in the subsequent experimental phase. This will be followed by the experimental phase which will focus on correlating wax deposition behaviour with coating surface parameters and flow characteristics. These experiments will use in-situ monitoring of the coatings under operating conditions. The final stage of the project will establish potential alternative polymer materials for improved internal coatings. Crondall Energy Subsea Director and Flow Assurance expert Murray Anderson explained: ‘Our study aims to evaluate current internal pipeline coatings, identify potential novel solutions and systematically test them in laboratory equipment at simulated pipeline conditions.’

Specialist subsea project delivery firms James Fisher Offshore (JFO) and First Subsea have joined forces to launch a revolutionary cut and lift product that promises to streamline decommissioning projects worldwide, simplifying operations while reducing costs and risk.

The contracts cover onshore drilling and related activities in the Middle East, Russia and Africa. In the Middle East, the Aberdeenbased company has been successful in winning a total of seven years of contract extensions for five heavy rigs operating in Oman. The extension for each rig ranges from one to two years. In addition to this, it has also signed a contract with a new unnamed client in Oman for one of its rigs for a fixed term of six months. In Russia, it has been awarded a new one-year drilling contract with one of the country’s leading integrated oil companies. It has also landed a new one-year drilling contract in Nigeria, with a one-year extension option, as well as a separate three-month drilling contract.

LOC Renewables supports first French offshore wind turbine

The Paris office of LOC Renewables, part of LOC Group, a leading international marine and engineering consulting firm, has successfully overseen the launch of France’s first offshore wind turbine. LOC Renewables supplied marine warranty surveying services across the project, which enabled an efficient and successful delivery of the 2MW Floatgen. The project is both France’s first offshore turbine and its first launch of a full-scale floating wind turbine. The Floatgen Demonstrator project, led by Ideol and involving six other European partners, is designed to show the technical and economic feasibility of an integrated floating wind turbine system, opening up a route to future developments.

Proserv makes senior subsea appointment to strengthen technology drive

Leading controls technology company Proserv has announced the promotion of Tore Erntsen to the position of Chief Technology Officer, Subsea Controls, based at the firm’s Trondheim facility. Prior to taking on his new role, Tore was Vice President, Engineering and Technology, within the Subsea team. Tore joined Proserv in 2012 when the firm took over the subsea controls business of Weatherford and he has been at the forefront of the core commitment to technological innovation, and its application, providing leading edge solutions for global customers. Tore has gained industry-wide recognition for his technology leadership, particularly through the expansion of Proserv’s team at its Trondheim facility and its status as a Technology Centre of Excellence, and this has been reflected in his new appointment. Iain Smith, President of Subsea Controls, said of Tore’s new post, ‘Alongside his senior role within Subsea Controls, and his contribution to our strategic planning, Tore’s technological focus provides a backbone of our company’s direction and accelerates our pace of change.’ Speaking after his promotion, Tore said, ‘I am delighted to undertake this new role, to continue to drive forwards Proserv’s R&D activities and to lay down the firm’s technology roadmap. New fuel operations deal for px px group, the Teesside based infrastructure solutions business, has been appointed to operate, manage and maintain the Northampton fuel storage and distribution terminal. InfraNorth Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Essar Oil UK, which acquired the facility from BP, has selected px due to its proven capability and competence in the industry. The full transition of the site has been completed, with eight workers transferring to px.

Servelec Controls and Eldor UK support IT systems on O&G assets Servelec Controls has transitioned the PI servers for EnQuest’s Magnus offshore platform and onshore Sullom Voe oil terminal into one main PI system, enabling operations monitoring from one single system.

The company now provides 24-hour incident response, proactive daily health checks, continual service improvement for system optimisation including upgrades for new features and optimised data analysis. At the two sites, the inherited Honeywell DynAMo alarm management system was transitioned into the IT estate. Servelec Controls has enlisted the services of Eldor UK to provide its expertise.

Eldor will undertake an initial on-boarding phase and provide appropriate training on the DynAMo alarm system to Servelec Controls’ engineers to enable them to provide the first line of support, with Eldor providing its expertise as and when required. Eldor will also carry out regular routine maintenance of the DynAMo systems at both assets. Servelec Controls Service Delivery Manager Tim MacLaren said, ‘This collaboration with Eldor will enable us to provide a more comprehensive service than would have been possible independently. Examples include the inaccessibility of traditional water jetting and the environmental implications of chemical cleaning. The build-up of fouling affects a refinery’s performance, throughput, energy requirements, environmental footprint, profits and product quality, with plants even reaching the point of shutdown due to asset replacement, resulting in high capital expenditure and millions in lost revenue. The paper reports startling figures, not least that the lost revenue for 5-10 days of lost production on an ethylene plant would be US$14US$28m, respectively, based on historic price of US$1,000 per tonne of ethylene.

THE SPACE-RING SYSTEM Powertherm Contract Services is a multidisciplinary industrial service provider with quality, safety and family at its core for 30 years. Powertherm predominantly operates within the oil and gas, power generation and petrochemical sectors, providing specialised services in thermal and acoustic insulation. Powertherm prides itself on developing pioneering and innovative technologies to help improve safety and efficiency of industry systems, such as the Space-Ring System.

Combating corrosion under insulation

The Space-Ring System (SRS) is a simple solution to combat corrosion under insulation (CUI). The system works by transferring the load of the external cladding from the soft, often friable insulation, to the underlying piping or equipment making the insulation system significantly stronger. The system also incorporates a drying and drainage mechanism that, in the unlikely event of damage, ensures the underlying piping or equipment remains completely dry.

Development of a unique product

Development of the SRS came about in response to the flaws in current systems available within industry, as most other systems are based around either making the insulation stronger or allowing drainage of moisture should the insulation become wet. None of the systems Powertherm found did both and did not offer drying capabilities or have the added benefit of being inspection friendly like the SRS, due to its modular design.

Industry benefits

The SRS has multiple benefits to offer the industry, most notably its capabilities in combating CUI. CUI is a major problem faced by many companies around the globe when trying to maintain insulated pipework. The SRS’ characteristics of strengthening the insulation system and incorporating drainage points lend themselves to combating CUI, which in turn significantly reduces a company’s maintenance costs.

We have a busy few months ahead in the Overseas Events team. At the beginning of April we will be managing the UK group at the International Partnering Forum in New York. Eight partners have joined together to bring a large group to the event: EIC, AREG, DIT, EEEGR, NOF Energy, Renewable UK, SDI and Team Humber Marine Alliance. The event leads the way in bringing the major offshore wind developers and US supply chain together with international players from around the world, as well as offering a comprehensive conference programme to update companies on the market. UK and Europe news Regional update

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Nicola Henderson as Business Lead and Events Manager for Scotland. Nicola joined the team in March and brings Johan na Cam pbell a wealth of experience from similar roles including being the Fundraising and Events Manager for the Society of Underwater Technology. Nicola looks forward to meeting EIC members and carrying on the busy events programme in the Scottish Region. The team were delighted to deliver two sell-out events in March: DataFest Aberdeen and a business presentation with Premier Oil in London. DataFest Aberdeen saw 280 delegates turning up to a one-day thought-leadership event showcasing the North Sea’s cutting edge data activity. Industry leaders Shell, I-Tech/Subsea 7, TAQA, Schlumberger, KCA Deutag, Wood and Stena Drilling all spoke at the event. Premier Oil’s business presentation heard from Russell Dandie, Global Supply Chain Manager, highlighting how to do business with the operator and what are the key opportunities for the UK supply chain. We also held our third EIC Westminster Round Table with Baroness Rona Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion, and representatives from 12 member companies of all sizes and from across the energy sectors. We have sent all EIC members a post event briefing document. We held our annual general meetings in March for the Southern and Scottish regions and are pleased to announce that both committees have welcomed new member representatives. After the Scottish meeting the team also ran a Bottom Fixed showcase, presenting opportunities for the UK supply chain. We look forward to adding more events to our schedule throughout all regions. UK tidal projects start to gain momentum

Tidal energy in the UK has been slow to develop, with the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project’s cancellation being a low point for the sector. However, hopes for the scheme’s revival have now emerged as a number of private investors such as Land Securities, Cardiff airport and Berkeley Group have shown an interest in financially backing the project. In other tidal news, Black & Veatch has secured a design services contract to help bring the 240MW Morlais tidal energy project in west Anglesey to the construction tender phase, while in Scotland the £10m Saltire Tidal Energy Challenge Fund to deploy tidal energy by March 2020 has been relaunched.

A few weeks into the role and I have had the opportunity to engage with a number of existing members who have been keen to share their EIC experiences with me. I will Ryan M cPhers on strive to maintain and add to the positive feedback and welcome the opportunity to meet with any other existing or potential members who wish to get in touch with me. With only a few weeks to go until our signature EIC Connect Oil, Gas & Beyond event on 16 April, we are excited to once again provide a detailed programme of events tailored to our members’ needs. In addition to contractor updates we have a full schedule of one-toone meetings alongside attendance from the ADNOC procurement team and many of the IOCs in the region. You will find the latest updates on our website, please take the time to register if you haven’t already done so, and be part of one of the region’s key events. Middle East Electricity held in Dubai during the first week of March saw the EIC exhibiting for the first time, highlighting our continued commitment to the power and renewables sector in the wider energy landscape. It was a well-attended event with many companies eager to engage with us further. Last month’s annual EIC golf tournament once again proved to be a great success with 14 teams participating including for the first time an EIC team, who despite not challenging for honours I am reliably informed did not finish last! Continuing the theme of firsts, the event was won for the first time by the Driver Trett team. Huge thanks to all who participated and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. We are currently taking bookings for our Mauritania and Senegal trade delegation from 17 to 21 June. This represents one of the emerging oil and gas markets offshore West Africa. KKR and BlackRock sign ADNOC pipeline deal with US$4bn investment

ADNOC has signed a US$4bn deal with investment firms KKR and BlackRock to form a new pipeline partnership. The state-owned company’s subsidiary, ADNOC Infrastructure, will hold a 60% stake in the new ADNOC Oil Pipelines, with KKR and BlackRock owning the remaining 40%. All of ADNOC’s stakes in 18 oil and condensates pipelines will be leased by the new partnership for 23 years, which together have a combined total length of more than 750km.

Shell wins highest number of awards in Egypt O&G bidding round

Anglo-Dutch major Shell landed three awards for oil concessions and two for gas in Egypt’s largest ever exploration and production tender. The auction marked the US’ ExxonMobil’s entry into Egypt’s gas sector. Other majors who landed awards were the UK’s BP and Italy’s Eni. Petroleum Minister Tarek El Molla has said that he expects between US$750m to US$800m to be invested in the country’s oil and gas sector as a result of the auction. The bid round included 12 concessions in the Mediterranean Sea as well as on land in the Nile Delta area.

Indonesia identifies 10 new high potential oil and gas areas

This year’s Japan Wind Expo brought 160 exhibitors from 13 countries to Tokyo. Technologies on display included offshore wind power generation systems, solar support systems, fuel cells, operations and maintenance tools for wind and solar farms, seabed ground survey equipment, battery systems and biomass installations. While there we had a good conversation with DIT Japan about the possibility of organising together a large-scale energy event in Japan for 2020-21. We visited the Australian Oil & Gas Exhibition & Conference in Perth on 13 – 15 March. It was a productive week with over 250 exhibiting companies and more than 8,000 global visitors taking part. There is a possibility that we’ll be holding an EIC Connect event in Australia in the first quarter of 2021 – watch this space. EIC Asia Pacific exhibited at the China International Petroleum & Petrochemical Technology and Equipment Exhibition in Beijing on 27 – 29 March. The event attracted over 100,000 visitors and 1,800 exhibitors on 18 national pavilions. We took part to evaluate the viability of hosting a UK pavilion at this exhibition in the coming years. Upstream oil and gas authority SKK Migas has identified 10 new oil and gas areas with huge potential reserves, which will become the focus of future development. These are in north Sumatra, central Sumatra, south Sumatra, Tarakan, the Java-Makassar strait, offshore Kutai, offshore Buton, northern Papua, Bird Body Papua and Warim Papua.

China’s shale oil revolution

There is a possibility of a surge in shale drilling with the oil discovery at the Jimsar field, Xinjiang province. The shale oil output in China is estimated to reach between 100,000 and 200,000 barrels a day by 2025 and this shale boom could boost revenue for the oilfield service companies.

Equinor and KNOC embark on South Korean floating offshore wind mission

Equinor and the state-owned Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore opportunities to develop floating offshore wind farms in South Korea. The country plans to have 49GW of new generation capacity from renewables by 2030 and the wind sector is expected to make up 16.5GW of this, with nearly 12GW being offshore. KNOC is looking to develop a 200MW floating offshore wind project at its existing Donghae platform 58km off the coast of Ulsan.

North and Central America news Regional update

We were delighted to host the inaugural EIC Connect Mexico Energy Forum in Mexico City in February. The event received HM Ambassador to Mexico Corin Robertson, who officially opened the Amand a Duho n event, and Shell Mexico’s Lucia Bustamante, who delivered the opening keynote address. The event proved a lot more popular than we anticipated, attracting over 130 delegates, meaning that we had to arrange a larger venue to accommodate the high turn out, which actually broke the record for the largest UK inward energy delegation to Mexico since its energy reform was implemented at the end of 2013. Speaker companies included Arendal, BHP Billiton, Grupo Mexico, Kiewit, McDermott, Petrofac, RPS Energy, UK Export Finance and Wood. Over 70 one-to-one appointments took place within the margins of EIC Connect Mexico Energy Forum. The event was held in partnership with the UK Department for International Trade and Scottish Development International; and supported by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, British Chamber of Mexico and the International Society for Mexico Energy. The overall key messages by market players were positive, positing that the industry should no longer refer to the Mexico energy reform, rather, the ‘new energy model’. The national oil company of Mexico, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), will remain the key operator in Mexico, however, international players are to stay with significant investment forthcoming. In addition, industry is keen to welcome supply chain players either through investment and/or partnerships to grow know-how and excellence across areas such as health, safety, security and environment. Over the next year, the EIC Houston office will be working to further solidify key partnerships in the region, and to work more closely with the NOC as well as international players across the value chain. Golden Pass LNG project makes significant headway

ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum have taken an FID on the US$10bn Golden Pass Products LNG Expansion Liquefaction Plant & Export Pipeline project in Jefferson County, Texas. Developers have also awarded two contracts for the facility. Baker Hughes, a GE company, will supply 12 centrifugal compressors and six MS7001 EA heavy-duty gas turbines. Air Products will provide three of its MCR main cryogenic heat exchangers, as well as its proprietary AP-C3MR natural gas liquefaction technology and associated equipment. Construction is scheduled to begin in Q1 2019.

Texas poised for world’s largest battery and associated solar project

Intersect Power has disclosed plans to construct a 495MW battery system in tandem with a solar farm of the same size in the Permian Basin in Borden County, Texas. The project will be the world’s largest battery system on completion, which is expected in 2021.

We are delighted to welcome back Clarisse Rocha, Head of Americas, from her maternity leave this month. Clarisse gave birth to a healthy boy named Vicente in October 2018. I will now step down Amand a Duho n from my role as Interim Head of Americas, passing the reins back to Clarisse. The Rio office would like to thank Rafael Torres, Business Development Director, André Surkamp, Business Development Manager and João Victor Gonçalo, Sales and Market Analyst from SBM Offshore for presenting to EIC members in Rio in February. Delegates were updated on the company’s operations in Brazil and in the new frontier fields in Guyana and the current Liza field project. A total of 34 attendees from over 30 different companies learned how SBM’s qualification and registration process for suppliers works, and the standards involved.

Special E&P bidding round in October

Brazil’s National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) has scheduled for 28 October a bidding round for production-sharing contracts in the pre-salt province, targeting surplus resources in the so-called ‘transferof-rights’ area. Negotiated with Petrobras in 2010, the transfer-of-rights agreement saw the government give the company the rights to produce up to 5bn barrels of oil from specific fields in the Santos Basin in exchange for shares in the company. However, these areas are estimated to contain surplus resources amounting to between 6 and 15bn barrels of oil equivalent, which will be offered to the market in October. It is understood that companies that obtain E&P contracts will have to pay compensation to Petrobras as some of the areas on offer (eg Búzios) have already received large investment. Companies obtaining contracts will also be required to sign unitisation agreements with Petrobras.

Argentina’s offshore bidding deadline extended

The government has decided to push back the deadline for offshore E&P concession bids to 16 April. According to officials, the extension was motivated by the large number of interested oil and gas companies. Currently, Total Austral and ENAP Sipetrol are the only companies operating offshore, in the shallow waters of the Austral Basin in southern Argentina.
