Europe’s contribution to the global rise of solar PV Over the past decade, the solar energy market has flourished worldwide. The media has reported a rise in global PV installations of 158.2GW from 2011 to 2016, with solar being the fastest growing energy source in 2017. The following year China, the world’s largest PV market, was stripped from government-funded subsidies causing global advancements to decline. However, experts predict that the market will rebound in 2019 – mainly because of the markets outside of China. Due to panel costs tumbling and minimum import prices ending, the European market has seen the biggest progressions globally. Studies saw Europe upsurge to 12GW of installed solar in 2018 and predict that this growth will continue throughout 2019-2020 at a record growth. Reports also predict the push for the decarbonisation of Europe will also drive solar installations to exceed 19GW in 2019, with certain countries already standing out as key players based on their growth in H1 2019. For several years Spain was one Europe’s biggest contenders in solar generation. Since 2013 its additions have stalled due to the 2008 economic crisis, followed by the Government decreeing a moratorium in 2012 against renewable energy incentives and the introduction of the ‘solar-tax.’ However, its new ‘renewable-friendly’ government has allowed Spain to see the biggest gains in the region this year. In the past few months our project tracker EICDataStream has seen an influx in proposed and progressing projects, including Iberdrola’s 590MW Francisco Pizarro solar plant has a large pipeline due for completion in 2019. The continuous fall of the technology’s costs has caused the sector’s demand to increase and experts expect the revived market alone to represent around 60% of Europe’s growth. The media has also reported a 3GW resuscitation in Germany’s solar market in 2018, since a period of subdued investments from subsidy cuts in 2012. However, articles state that Germany is now the fourth largest PV market in the world, and its growth has soared at even faster rates in 2019, with 1.6GW already added during January-April. The market will continue prospering, as its latest auction awarded 20-year support to 205MW of solar capacity and was oversubscribed by 351MW. Germany is also moving towards unsubsidised developments, with Berlin to start construction on BayWa’s 8.8MW Barth V plant – the country’s first subsidy-free solar project.

Other upcoming markets include Portugal with its 1.35GW PV auction this summer anticipated by sources to be oversubscribed four-fold, and the Netherlands who have already installed 1.5GW in 2018. Reports also expect repowering projects to emerge, as their data shows that over 40GW of old systems are over five years old and could see revamping works in the coming year. Most of the older plants are concentrated in Germany, Italy, Spain, and France. However, some countries are still struggling to enter the new ‘pro-solar’ era. In the UK solar continues to stagnate, with the media constantly stating that the technology’s importance in reaching its 2050 carbon emissions targets is being ignored. The sector is blocked from participating in the CfD funding mechanism and no longer has the Renewables Obligation support scheme, hence ready-to-build projects are arising but with stale construction phases. Scotland in particular is reported to have 281MW consented solar projects but only two 5MW plants coming online this year, due to the technology’s uncertain price support outlook. Coal continues to be Poland’s leading energy source, with government policies in 2015 making it harder to invest in solar energy. Nonetheless experts saw three times more PV installations in 2018 than 2017 and in 2019 it is expected to increase tenfold. Its upcoming 2019 auction will invite 750MW of solar capacity, however developers are currently only building 1MW maximum capacities due to onshore wind being too competitive to go against in the 1MW plus auction, making it unclear how successful the auction will be. Regardless, in most countries solar energy is advancing in earnest throughout the world thanks to the fall in technology costs. Europe’s upward momentum in the sector will be of huge importance in fighting global climate change and its overall impact in the global rise of solar developments cannot be challenged. In Europe alone, the media expects its solar capacity to reach 250GW by 2024 due to the push of decarbonisation plans. With over 170GW of gas, coal and nuclear to be displaced by 2040, solar energy’s future in Europe is looking bright. Sharanya Kumaramurthy Energy Research Assistant sharanya.kumaramurthy@the-eic.com

One-to-one
with Leo Liang Head of Strategy & Business Development, Adenergy ADEN is an Asia-based facility management company that specialises in integrating IoT, clean energy and robotics into its facility solutions. In 2018, ADEN launched Adenergy, its clean-energy subsidiary, and has already received awards for its IoT platform, AEMO. Leo Liang has headed projects for smart buildings, distributed energy and smart-grid solutions. Leo also established the joint venture to develop Shanghai’s first 10MW industrial park CHP project and the first smart-grid project in Tianjin (TEDA).
Q
Adenergy makes IoT a major part of its energy solutions. Overall, how viable is IoT as a solution for most companies?
IoT’s potential is enormous, but only if you use it correctly. You need to define exactly what you want to learn and achieve with the technology, and make sure your data is in context and interconnected, otherwise you’ll pull a mass of data without real meaning. That’s why a collaborative approach and carefully planned IoT strategy is just as important to Adenergy as the technology itself.
A
When good foundations are in place, results follow. With our AEMO platform, we’re using IoT in many contexts: smart factories, facility and asset management among others. It all boils down to optimisation, digitisation, visibility of the facility and its components and leveraging all of these to boost efficiency and productivity for clients and building users.
Q
You have entered into partnerships with two major industrial companies: Honeywell and Hengli Group. What is the significance of this? How is it contributing to the clean-energy agenda?
The common thread is pioneering new models for clean industry – energy solutions that originate and are managed directly from the client’s facility.
A
Q
A
Q
Hengli is our first investment in a B2B wind-power project. We will be deploying six turbines at their factory. This type of onsite project reduces long-distance power transmission loss and won’t require any additional agricultural land, as would occur with a centralised wind farm. Most importantly, our project will make a substantial dent in Hengli’s carbon footprint. With the turbines in place, the factory will see a 30% drop in emissions.
A
Southeast Asia is a high-growth region and a lot of international companies are shifting operations from China to countries such as Vietnam, and Indonesia. ADEN foresaw this trend and has had our ASEAN network in place for a long time. We’ve found that clean energy generates just as much interest in ASEAN as it does in China, which makes sense.
Southeast Asia has learned from China’s industrial transformation and how China needed to move from dirty to clean energy. Not only are ASEAN countries taking on more industrial development, but they’ve watched and learned from China’s experience, and are now taking advantage of many energy innovations that have developed since then.
Having a strong network in both China and ASEAN, Adenergy can act as a bridge between the regions. Today, we can deliver the same level of integrated energy solutions and innovation in Southeast Asia that we’re doing in China at the moment.
Any EIC members who wish to be profiled in this section please contact Lucy Chakaodza, EIC Editor and Communications Manager lucy.chakaodza@the-eic.com
And the Honeywell project? With Honeywell, we’re combining several renewable solutions in one contract: photovoltaic generation, plus energy storage, plus EV charging systems. The whole system will be optimised by AEMO, our IoT platform. So, Honeywell’s site is transformed into a microgrid that intelligently stores, generates and discharges renewable energy to the factory and individual EV users. Again, it’s about local generation and management in a way that makes the industrial site smart and sustainable. How are companies in South East Asia, including ADEN, moving towards green-energy generation?

Member news ABB was honoured with an Electrical Review Excellence award for its ABB Ability™ inspection for transformers – TXplore™ – in the Power Product of the Year category. Electrical Review is the leading electrical industry publication in the UK.
While there have been major advances in monitoring and diagnostic technology for power transformers, there are still times when an internal inspection is required. The traditional approach requires an outage lasting three or more days while the oil is drained to enable a technician to climb inside the unit. Following a successful inspection, the transformer must then be refilled before re-starting operation. In contrast, the new TXplore™ service uses a free-swimming submersible robot to capture images and video and transmit them via a wireless connection. Because the oil stays in place throughout, there is no need to drain the oil or send a technician into the oily, sensitive and hazardous interior. Not only is this much safer, the transformer is usually back on line the same or next day.

Due to its higher accuracy and success rate, the system delivers enhanced performance with minimal downtime, as well as a reduced operational footprint. The system has already been deployed offshore to great success for use in a unique deep water cutting operation at water depths in excess of 180 metres. Several performance additions, including real-time cut verification, visual external cut monitoring and increased flexibility offer significant operational advantages. The cut verification system also ensures complete operator and customer certainty, helping to reduce the risk of stitching and, ultimately, reducing risk of over-run on high cost projects. The launch of this new technology comes in quick succession to JFO’s cut and lift product, ICLT, that will help streamline decommissioning projects.

Rotork electric actuators powered by solar panels on US gas wells
Rotork intelligent full-turn electric actuators have been supplied for upstream shale gas production wells in the USA. Engineered for choke and control valve applications, Rotork’s IQTF actuators provide reliable flow control for oil and gas or process operations, capable of achieving accuracy to 0.3% and resolution to 0.1%. A highly accurate absolute position sensor can measure up to 22 output turns independent of electrical power. All wells at the Haynesville formation are fully automated to maintain flow and well pressure. To maximise the lifespan of the wells, the customer uses two choke valves on each one to step pressure down from 10,000 psi to 1,200 psi. Shale gas is metered between the wellhead and midstream trunkline where it is transported to domestic supply customers as well as industries including LNG plants and power stations.
Pipe seal and modular-based cable provider Roxtec UK, has developed new Building Information Management (BIM) drawings of its products in a bid to support energy infrastructure projects. The global pipe and cable seal specialist has developed ‘Roxtec BIM Objects’ which can be incorporated in computer aided design programmes. Roxtec UK managing director Clive Sharp said the BIM objects have been developed to boost the firm’s service level and help meet the growing demands of the energy industry.
The involvement of Rotork Site Services (RSS), which offered final commission and warranty, and Rotork’s support during initial testing and calibrating were key in the customer’s decision to choose the company’s products.

Roxtec’s cable seals protect people and assets from multiple hazards including fire, flooding, electromagnetic disturbances and the risk of explosion. BIM Objects are essentially files which can be used in building design software programmes such as Revit, Tekla and ArchiCad. The new collection of Roxtec BIM Objects will enable designers to incorporate Roxtec products into their digital design process. The £173 million-turnover Swedishheadquartered firm first entered the marketplace in 1990 and is now active in more than 80 markets.

The remote location of the wells means a DC power supply using a solar system and battery pack is being used to power the IQTF actuators. This solution was specified as a more reliable option than hydraulic or pneumatic actuation as it avoids potential leakage common in hydraulic actuators. Texas also has plenty of sun to use as a source while electric actuators use less power than a hydraulic system.

UK and Europe news Regional update
July 2019 kicked off with our first collaborative event with Investec Bank. We held a fantastic summer networking evening, showcasing Investec’s expertise in the Jo Cam pbell energy industry at their stunning venue, overlooking the views of London from their rooftop terrace. There were over 100 attendees including delegates from Emerson, KBR, McDermott, Petrofac, Repsol and Worley. We are looking forward to developing this relationship further while adding value to our members. If you would like to explore how Investec can support you, please visit their website: https://www.investec.com/en_gb/focus/energy.html We also held a Mexican round table event in London on 1 July. The Mexican energy industry is growing into a prime area for international investment. The revitalisation of the oil and gas industry is underway with numerous global players taking significant stakes in offshore exploration areas. This round table offered information on current and future Mexican project opportunities with major operator Repsol and contractor Protexa, while the Department for International Trade (DIT) provided guidance on how to do business across the energy space in Mexico. The UK events team is pleased to announce Kerrie Madden has accepted the role as Business Lead and Events Manager. Kerrie will be managing our northern events programme and is looking forward to catching up with members and running a great variety of events. Continuing the success of our previous breakfast briefing in Aberdeen, we will be once again working in partnership with OGIC to bring our third breakfast briefing on Thursday 5 September at Emerson Solutions Centre. This event will coincide with Offshore Europe where our overseas events team will be managing the UK pavilion. We will also be joining the EIC’s strategic events team while they host EIC Connect Energy 2019 on 10 September in Manchester, bringing global operators, top EPC contractors and the UK’s supply chain together to generate new business opportunities in the power, nuclear and renewables sectors. With a combination of conference sessions, supply chain briefings, high-level round table discussions and one-to-one meetings with key global contractors and operators all looking to do business with the UK supply chain, EIC Connect Energy 2019 should not be missed. UK paves the way for battery storage facilities
The future of onshore wind and solar has always been dependent on the growth of energy storage developments, and the UK continues to show its support in the sector. The UK’s battery storage capacity is set to increase by more than 70% in 2019 and a number of advancements have recently been made to support this. ScottishPower Renewables won the right to develop a 50MW energy storage system for the 593MW Whitelee facility, the UK’s largest onshore wind farm. In Bedford, Smith Brothers Contracting has begun construction works for Arlington Energy’s 40MW battery storage facility, while in West Sussex, the county council has granted planning consent for a 36MW energy storage project at Halewick Lane. Statkraft and Statera Energy have signed a 15-year partnership to develop 1GW of flexible power supply, under which Statera Energy will provide 50MWh of storage capacity for a UK facility. Meanwhile, Gore Street Energy Storage Fund has agreed to acquire controlling stakes in two 50MW facilities in Northern Ireland.

Middle East news Regional update
This month marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the EIC in the region with three new members joining: Black Cat Engineering, Ryan M cPhers on JC International and Bilco; the latter becomes our first GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) member, of which we hope to welcome many more in the future. We extend a warm welcome to all three companies and look forward to seeing them at our forthcoming events. Our inaugural summer networking event in Abu Dhabi was a resounding success and will certainly be repeated on a regular basis. This is in conjunction with our ever popular Home Alone Curry Evening which will be held in Dubai on 21 August. Details can be found on our website where we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Following on from our extremely successful business opportunities lunch with KBR, I am keen to hear who members would like to see present, so that we can tailor future events accordingly. Please give me a call or drop me an email where I’ll be happy to discuss further. Escalating geopolitical tensions continue between the US, OPEC’s Gulf Arab members and Iran over attacks on tankers carrying crude from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. At the time of writing this has led to a surge in the oil price, increased insurance premiums on maritime companies operating through the Strait of Hormuz, and a general feeling of unease impacted on a global scale. Hopefully this will be resolved amicably over the coming weeks. Finally, with ADIPEC firmly on the horizon we will be hosting four pavilions, including the digitalisation pavilion in Hall 14. Representing over 100 companies, we have a number of sponsorship opportunities available should you wish to contact myself or my colleague pamela.nicholson@the-eic.com for further information. McDermott awarded three contracts by Saudi Aramco worth above US$4bn
US EPC contractor McDermott has won three contracts with Saudi Aramco for two oil and gas fields off Saudi Arabia. The first is a large deal, worth between US$50m and US$250m, and is for engineering, construction and installation services in the Marjan and Zuluf fields. McDermott will fabricate new control rooms, boat landings and new jacket members as part of a relocation of control rooms at the sites, as well as upgrading all control systems. Work will take place at McDermott’s Al Khobar office and Dammam fabrication facility, starting immediately. In addition, McDermott has received a letter of intent for the award of the two largest offshore packages of the US$15bn Marjan incremental development project, with combined value for the contract in excess of US$4 billion.
Aramco opens opportunities for UK supply chain Speaking at the EIC’s Energy Exports Conference, Saudi Aramco boss Mr Al-Marri said that there are huge opportunities available for UK supply chain companies. Saudi Aramco has allocated more than £320bn over the next 10 years and Mr Al-Marri said the company is looking for more collaboration with UK companies. Saudi Aramco has opened a technology office in Westhill to capitalise oil and gas knowledge and committed to invest a sevenfigure sum to firm Well-Sense. They also agreed to work with Pragma on the development of advanced production technology.

Asia Pacific news Regional update
There were two major events held in Kuala Lumpur in June that are worth noting. The first was the 17th Oil and Gas Asia 2019 (OGA 2019) held in the Azman Kuala Lumpur Convention Nasir Center. OGA 2019 had more than 2,000 participating companies, 11 international pavilions and 25,000 visitors. As usual the EIC managed the UK Pavilion with 11 UK companies exhibiting. EIC Asia Pacific arranged for PETRONAS personnel to visit the UK and meet with the exhibitors. We also participated in Subsea UK’s seminar where our membership manager, Angeline Elias, presented the latest regional market outlook to UK companies. On the evening of 19 June the EIC co-hosted an evening reception for UK and Malaysian companies visiting OGA 2019 in collaboration with Subsea UK, Scotland Enterprise and the British-Malaysian Chamber of Commerce. A total of 90 companies attended the event which was officiated by the UK’s High Commissioner to Malaysia His Excellency Charles Hay. The second event in Kuala Lumpur was the Asian Oil & Gas Conference (AOGC) organised by PETRONAS held a few days following OGA 2019. Most of the UK companies visiting OGA 2019 also visited AOGC as there were many opportunities to meet key local players. In the same week as OGA 2019, EIC Asia Pacific attended the Energy Exports Conference in Aberdeen with the specific task of accompanying a team of four from PETRONAS who spoke at the event in the decommissioning panel session. The team from PETRONAS was led by the Head of Decommissioning, Mr Handan Ramli. Following EEC, we organised visits to UK decommissioning companies based in Aberdeen. The PETRONAS team was keen to learn from UK experience in decommissioning oil platforms in the North Sea. Among the UK companies who played host to the PETRONAS team were Wood, Optimus, Xodus Group, PD&MS and Proserv. EIC Connect Energy South Korea will be held on 8 October 2019 in Seoul, South Korea. Bookings for this event are now open via the EIC website. Azman Nasir, Head of Asia Pacific azman.nasir@the-eic.com

LNG terminal for Liuheng Island
China’s Zhejiang Energy has signed a co-operation framework agreement with Shenzhen Energy and the Liuheng management committee to jointly invest and develop an LNG receiving terminal project in Liuheng island. The facility is planned to have the capacity to accommodate LNG tankers capable of transporting up to 266,000 cubic metres of LNG, a reload facility and three 200,000 cubic metre storage tanks. It will be capable of handling 3 mtpa of LNG, with a planned expansion of up to 6 mtpa during the second phase of development. Zhejiang Energy has already signed a deal with ExxonMobil for the supply of 1 million metric tonnes of LNG per year for a 20-year term.
New completion for Dorado-2
Santos has started drilling the Roc South-1 exploration well. The drilling completion of the third well will assist in making the final investment decision in 2020. Santos has announced that the Dorado-2 appraisal well has been successfully completed and has confirmed a major oil and gas resource at the discovery. The well, drilled by the Noble Tom Prosser rig to 4,573 metres, encountered 85 metres of net reservoir in the Caley formation. An OWC was intersected at 4,003 metres MD with 40 metres of net oil pay encountered. The well also encountered a further 11 metres of pay in the Upper Caley sands with preliminary well analysis indicating that the upper zone is oil-bearing. The appraisal well has increased confidence in the presence of large hydrocarbon columns in the Baxter and Milne reservoirs which should result in a significant increase in gas resources relative to pre-drill estimates.

Chile beats renewables target
Chile has already met its target to have at least 20% of its total installed capacity derived from renewable sources by 2025. According to the country’s National Energy Commission (CNE), renewables were responsible for 21% of total capacity in 2018. Last June, authorities announced plans to shut down all of Chile’s 28 coal-fired power plants by 2040, which would be replaced by renewable energy generation. The government expects renewables to account for 70% of Chile’s power supply by 2030.
