Egypt’s hydrogen hype

Egypt has set an ambition to become one of the global leaders in the low-carbon hydrogen sector, with a target of acquiring 5% of the global market share of traded hydrogen by 2040. Together with its target to produce 42% of its energy from renewable energy by the year 2035, the ambition is achievable. To become a leader in the hydrogen market, Egypt established a high-level governmental committee made up of senior representatives from various ministries. The committee’s duties included developing a national hydrogen strategy for Egypt and investigating opportunities for hydrogen production as well as potential financing options for these projects.

Egypt was recently the host of COP27, which was held at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. During COP27, Egypt signed various framework agreements related to hydrogen. Some of the agreements signed are with AMEA Power, Alfanar, TotalEnergies, Globeleq, EDF, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), ReNew and Scatec. The projects proposed by these companies are all focused on the Red Sea port and the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). Some of the high-value framework agreements signed were the US$9bn green hydrogen plant with Globeleq and the US$3.5bn green ammonia and hydrogen project with Alfanar, both located in the SCZone.

During COP27, a group of companies consisting of Fertiglobe, Orascom Construction, Scatec and The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) announced the start of the commissioning of the first phase of a 100MW green hydrogen production facility. The first phase involves the installation of Africa’s first and largest polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser which is currently undergoing tests. The full scale of the green hydrogen plant will produce 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by utilising 260MW of wind and solar energy. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed during COP27 between the European Union (EU) and Egypt for the development of production, consumption and trade of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The MoU was signed by the European Commission’s executive vice president, energy commissioner, Egypt’s minister for petroleum and minister of electricity and renewable energy. The MoU will help both sides, with the EU covering the projected consumption of 20m tonnes in 2030 by importing from Egypt and supporting the investments of renewable energy in Egypt. The expansion of power networks and the development of infrastructure for the storage, transportation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives to Europe will also be supported by the two parties.

The main consumers of green hydrogen in Egypt are industrial sectors such as the steel industry, refineries, petrochemical complexes and the fertiliser industry. Other consumers, such as the food industries, have very low green hydrogen consumption. One of the opportunities that arises with Egypt’s plan to enter the green hydrogen market is that Egypt can become a regional and global hydrogen exporter due to its strategic location, which links the Asian and European markets.

Financial institutions supporting the green hydrogen industry are one of the main drivers of why Egypt is into green hydrogen. In March 2022, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a MoU with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to establish a framework to assess the potential of lowcarbon hydrogen supply chains in Egypt. The signed MoU addresses the mapping of the current and anticipated future global supply and market demand for hydrogen, the analysis of the current and anticipated future hydrogen production in Egypt, and the valuation of the storage, conversion and transportation of hydrogen and its derivatives.

Meanwhile, some of the challenges to the development of green hydrogen in Egypt are the limited water resources. Due to the Nile River water issue, Egypt is now facing water supply shortages and the country has started to develop a few desalination plants. This will then lead to a high cost of green hydrogen production as water is the main source of green hydrogen production. Infrastructure readiness for hydrogen storage and transmission is also a challenge in Egypt. The other challenge that Egypt may face is the availability of renewable energy resources. Egypt’s government is planning to increase the renewable energy share in its national grid, however, the usage of renewable energy in producing green hydrogen may delay these plans. Furthermore, there is a lack of suitable infrastructure in Egypt for transporting and storing hydrogen. Even though a part of the natural gas network can be utilised for transporting hydrogen, large hydrogen production still needs suitable separate infrastructure.

Production of green hydrogen in Egypt will be a great opportunity for the development of the country as its location and renewable energy capacities can turn Egypt into a regional and global hub for green hydrogen. However, to achieve this target, Egypt will face a lot of challenges and it needs efforts to really utilise Egypt’s advantages in the green hydrogen industry.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Blaze considers it’s EIC membership as key to its diversification success over the past six years. After an outstanding seven years of exponential growth supporting oil and gas, Blaze had to completely diversify its customer base following the onset of the downturn in oil and gas. While we were members of several organisations we had to look at our alliances and decide who could come along with us on our diversification journey. The staff at EIC became to feel like part of our team, introducing us to other members (potential clients) and encouraging us to show how far we had come by entering their awards which we had never entered outside oil and gas or even outside Aberdeen! Winning the EIC Award for Supply Chain Breakthrough in 2016 was a turning point for blaze as we were suddenly on everyone’s radar and the boost it gave to both Howard and I plus all our staff was immeasurable.

What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?

Both Blaze and the EIC have had a roller coaster of a history, seeing exponential growth in the good years and having to diversify rapidly and respond to change instantly depending on external factors like COVID. We both have to be keenly aware of geopolitical situations, constantly assessing activities not just in the UK but throughout the world and we both have credibly diversified very successfully into new markets. They say people buy from people, that’s why the relationships both companies make are so important to their future. Both Blaze and the EIC know the importance of relationships and supporting fellow supply chain members when times are difficult.

Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Where would we both be in 80 years, sometimes I don’t know what will happen next month! You can plan all you like but we tend to find that through our hard work of not only business development but supporting our current clients, all sorts of opportunities come our way and we are never ones to shy away from a challenge – just like the EIC. Our latest was designing a fire system for a piece of equipment in a very remote location with no power supply, no water supply and no one there to switch it on. To Blaze, no problem, Copperbelt Energy now has a uniquely designed water mist system commissioned and ready to extinguish a fire without any intervention for a human being. Blaze has even trained its local maintenance engineer so it can be locally sustainable. The message here is the need to keep our engineers excited by new innovations and challenges while sharing that knowledge to others to help them develop.

About Blaze Manufacturing

Established in 2006, Blaze is a leading provider of fire safety systems for harsh and challenging environments, providing solutions to the oil and gas, renewables, nuclear and industrial sectors. With its industry leading knowledge it provides solutions ranging from the design of front-end concepts to the commissioning and maintaining of active fire extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems. The company’s integrated fire safety solutions improve plant safety and business performance. Blaze has successfully managed to take its innovation and expertise honed in oil and gas and apply it to industries from the jungles of Africa to the worlds newest nuclear site.

ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Our contact with the EIC started recently in 2022, even so we already consider this partnership extremely positive and successful.

As sponsors of three Breakfast in Rio events and as participants in others, we had the opportunity to expose our capabilities and expertise to a target audience of decision-makers from potential customers, as well as show our evolution to current customers. In the same way, we have also reached new suppliers of products and services.

The EIC has been supporting us with marketing and presentation tips and we then decided to join as an EIC member, which has granted us access to the EIC’s valuable market intelligence tools.

It is worth noting that, as of our first participation in Breakfast in Rio with Equinor and Subsea7 on 30 June, we have already succeeded in a very important partnership with Subsea7 itself, from which we already have relevant orders in our portfolio.

What are the synergies between EquipSea and the EIC?

EquipSea was born focused on the O&G sector. We can say that O&G subsea equipment is much more than our core business, it’s our DNA. We have been strongly expanding in this sector throughout our five years of life, and we have very ambitious goals within it for the coming years. However, we also have the goal of entering other sectors focused on renewable energy (solar, wind, hydrogen, etc) and, in this direction, our synergy with the EIC is total, and we are certain that the partnership with the EIC is a key element in achieving our objectives.

Where would you like to see EquipSea and the EIC in the next 80 years?

We work with the purpose of building a solid and continuously growing company for the next generations.

Obtaining energy in all its forms is and will be an increasingly pressing need for humanity, and EquipSea intends to always be aligned with this. We aim to be the main Brazilian company in our segment, and soon to start reaching global relevance as the partner of choice for leading global energy companies.

EIC INSIDE ENERGY 8

ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

The EIC has been substantial in our insertion as service providers in the energy industry. In over a decade of co-operation, we have greatly benefited from the events and networking with market players.

We have a great story to tell – at an EIC/UK Trade & Investment event, during a coffee break, we were helping ourselves to snacks and informally started a conversation with a gentleman doing the same thing. When he found out that we were an accounting firm, he started to comment on how unhappy he was with their current provider. It was the first time we closed a deal over a snack table on a coffee break! This company is now one of our biggest clients and our relationship goes back nine years now.

What are the synergies between Grupo Planus and the EIC?

Grupo Planus’ main market segment served is the energy sector. EIC is a top reference in the segment.

With EIC’s mission being assisting clients in this area, EIC is frequently directing companies wishing to participate in the local market to trusted advisors who can assist with the setup and operation plan. Over the years, our co-operation thrived as we gladly provide assistance to these companies.

Where would you like to see Grupo Planus and EIC in the next 80 years?

We expect our relationship to continue growing, in both size and territorial reach, especially in other Latin American jurisdictions.

About Grupo Planus

Grupo Planus is an accounting services firm with over 40 years of experience in Brazil. Its greatest commitment is to support with integrity and efficiency international companies with businesses in Brazil or Brazilian companies going through an internationalisation process. ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years?

EIC has helped us over the years by the market investigation and reports. We have used the information when working on our budgets, our sales strategy and coming to meetings prepared. Besides the market information we have been very involved in various advisory boards, EIC Connect events, partnerships for trade missions and industry events and finally we had a hot seat and phone services through the Houston office for over two years. iPS being a global organisation, we have been in advisory boards in the Middle East, Americas and Europe.

Any interesting stories to tell?

During my time in Mexico being part of the very first EIC Connect Mexico, both as host of the event and helping put together the programme was very satisfying. There were some doubts to organise the event in Mexico, we had various meetings to get together the programme and measure interest of participants and speakers, but both events (2018 and 2019) were a big success.

What are the synergies between iPS Powerful People and the EIC?

As mentioned above what mostly stood out for me personally, being responsible for the Americas region has been the hot desk in Houston, where we had a phone number, address and we were able to come in the office and have a great place to work from with a great local team. We have also participated and sponsored the EIC Connect USA event. Another successful collaboration is where our local manager in Saudi Arabia, Ali Al Ghanim, took a similar role in the very first EIC Connect in Saudi Arabia in 2020.

Where would you like to see iPS Powerful People and the EIC in the next 80 years?

iPS is hoping to expand further and learning through EIC and its monitoring tools to be able to stay on top of the market and going into markets well prepared. The energy industry is in transition and many more lines of industry are being developed.

From the traditional oil and gas into offshore wind, hydrogen, LNG and other sources of energy have changed the playing field for us as staffing agent as well as for EIC to be able to monitor all industries in different countries. EIC can be proud of what it has established, and we look forward to a long and sustainable future together.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

The EIC has helped our business in several ways over the years; from running industry knowledge workshops, country and sector events and guides, CONNECT networking events, to speedy networking, EICDataStream, Asset and SupplyMaps. All these services are topped off by the people that make up the EIC. Accessible, open, professional, dedicated and service led, the team is awesome and has become strong go-to professional contacts. I remember Neil inviting me to a networking event some years back and introducing me to his new analyst team member Diveena. So impressive as a new entrant to the industry, I recall asking Neil to share his recruitment tips! Funny coming from a recruiter.

What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?

The primary synergy is that we all speak with the same people within the energy sector, so sharing connections and cross overs are common. We are both service led companies who strive to deliver the best quality of delivery while promoting all that is great about the wider energy industry as it changes and grows.

Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?

What a question! When you think about what the energy industry looked like 80 years ago, eight decades from now it will be unrecognisable from a technological perspective. Science, engineering, thought leadership, service delivery and connecting people will still exist, so we are sure there will be space for us to continue to work together in harmony.

ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Roxtec has been an active member of the EIC for over 19 years. And for more than seven years we have contributed at board level and on regional committees in the North and Scotland. We have found the networking and intelligence gathering on industry trends very insightful not just in the UK but also the Middle East and America. A key tool is EICDataStream which is a dynamic database of projects being updated constantly. This helps us understand the status of different projects particularly those most relevant to us, worth more than US$500m, so we can pitch for tenders, specifications and we know who is involved.

A good example is the massive TCO oil processing plant project in Kazakhstan led by Fluor in the UK. From EIC data Roxtec was able to engage with the project not just in the UK but around the world.

Another valuable tool is EICAssetMap which enables searching for existing projects by region. Using this we can identify, for example, process industry plant updates and maintenance around Britain.

Importantly the information EIC provides is bang up to date thanks to the EIC research team which collects data more efficiently than we could ourselves.

What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?

The geographical reach of EIC, with its offices globally, is a great fit for Roxtec and our 28 subsidiaries. Furthermore, EIC operates in some of our key sectors including oil and gas, process industries and power generation from nuclear to renewables. EIC’s broad scope means it can help Roxtec in multiple sectors, it is not simply pigeonholed to oil and gas. Overall this outlook and depth of data makes the EIC a sound partner for Roxtec and supports our ambition to grow by 10-15% a year.

Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Stuart Broadley is leading the EIC well and like Roxtec he is keenly aware that in 80 years our energy mix will be very different to today. As a result, a prime area we would like to see develop between Roxtec and the EIC is growth in the energy transition space. We would like EIC to continue to provide us with valuable insight in the months and years ahead into how the debate is evolving. What are the benefits and limitations, for example, of hydrogen and how will renewables and nuclear fit into the future energy mix? All of this is uncertain and new innovations like small modular reactors are coming to market disrupting the sector. We would like to see Roxtec and EIC navigate this period of immense energy change together so we can both support a future powered by cleaner fuels.

About Roxtec

Roxtec was founded in Sweden in 1990. It is now the global leader in the manufacture of innovative cable and pipe transit systems, supplying many of the world’s biggest firms. It is active in more than 80 markets with a turnover of more than £173m employing over 800 staff across 28 subsidiaries.

Roxtec’s products are designed to seal openings for cables and pipes, and are used to protect people, buildings and equipment from multiple hazards. Its key market sectors include marine, oil and gas, telecoms, construction, power (generation, distribution and transmission) OEM (eg trains, engines, motors, generators) and the process industries.

Roxtec has a Triple-A credit rating and is actively expanding into new areas offering innovative and safe sealing solutions to a variety of industries.

80 ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

The EIC has always been a great support to Safelift over the years and is certainly a major factor in our growth in international energy markets. This began when we first exhibited on a UK pavilion with EIC in Singapore in 2014. Since then, we have joined them at many exhibitions and conferences in the UAE, Houston, Norway, Mexico and, of course, Aberdeen.

The network support in particular is second to none. The level of contact they reach, in terms of global operators and contractors during exhibitions, is amazing. It really is a valuable resource for us as a SME, as it could potentially take many weeks or months of work to get access to the right people and companies, especially when we’re looking to gain traction in a new or emerging market.

In addition to that, the market intelligence we have direct access to by means of EICDataStream is also an important resource for us particularly in terms of major project tracking and contract awards in existing markets. We’ve taken part in several trade missions where the schedule is always action-packed and very well organised. We’ve been part of some great groups of companies on these trips, where we still keep in touch many years later and that can only be down to the great experience and introductions we’ve gained through the EIC.

What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?

We see the EIC as almost an extension to our sales team, as they are as invested as ourselves in our success within our target markets and focus on our continued growth. As a global member, this enables us to understand industry trends and realise business opportunities worldwide. We can rely on the EIC team to be on hand for any market advice from region to region and the support is always specific to our needs.

Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Our ambition would be to see our company and the EIC to continue to grow from strength to strength, where we still keep in close contact and support one another in the years to come.

Proserv secures SMS as sampling representative in Malaysia

Global controls technology company Proserv has signed an agreement with Aberdeen based sand and erosion monitoring, analytics and management experts SMS.

The deal sees SMS become the exclusive agent and representative for Proserv’s sampling activities across Malaysia. The arrangement brings Proserv’s sampling system know-how, equipment design and high-quality manufacturing, delivering safe, enclosed and portable solutions, together with SMS’s sand monitoring technologies.

SMS engages non-intrusive corrosion and erosion sensors to supply real-time monitoring and data acquisition which when analysed and interpreted by subject matter experts can enable swift identification of incipient problems that, without appropriate intervention, could halt production via equipment damage or failure.

It is expected that Proserv and SMS’s combined offering will give clients a step change in the visibility of the condition and integrity of flowlines and, through the live measurement of sand quantities, will allow operators to make informed early strategy decisions around production rates, maintenance planning and ultimately the life of critical infrastructure.

Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asia region have a significant need for effective, real-time monitoring and assessment of sand levels in oil and gas production flowlines to alleviate erosion risks, improve safety and reduce the threat of downtime.

As part of the tie-up, Proserv will also establish a service centre in Malaysia located at SMS’s local facility in Labuan. This will be based upon the successful model in operation at Proserv’s main Sampling Centre of Excellence in Aberdeen and at its sites in the US, Norway, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The centre will supply both servicing and sampling equipment rental.

HTX DIGITAL – THE INNOVATIVE DIGITAL HEAT EXCHANGER MAINTENANCE SERVICE

In today’s digital marketplace, we see many players working in the congested rotating equipment space with various condition based and predictive maintenance systems. What is often neglected is condition-based maintenance analysis on static equipment and in particular, heat exchangers.

As a major player in the design, repair and maintenance of heat exchangers, Glacier Energy has developed HTX Digital, an innovative digital, predictive heat exchanger management service. The service takes Glacier Energy’s years of experience in failure and root cause analysis of heat exchangers and combines this with data science to deliver a conditionbased maintenance tool. The service is designed for heat exchanger users and can be applied to shell and tube, plate and frame, printed circuit and air-cooled heat exchangers.

Using existing data, Glacier Energy has developed several calculations strategies within HTX Digital which address: pressure and temperature limits, internal fouling, tube vibration, tube expansion, velocity limits in shell and tube exchangers, cyclic loading in printed circuit exchangers and energy efficiency.

The energy efficiency calculation is a key feature. It delivers insightful results which includes a trend showing loss of efficiency through fouling and a predictive curve highlighting the optimal time for cleaning. This is aimed at optimising time in service while predicting the optimal intervention period. This therefore allows operators to plan time, access and suitable resources that fit with plant operations.

It is anticipated that operators can potentially reduce OPEX by up to 30% through the use of HTX Digital. The calculation also estimates increased operating costs and increased CO2 production as a result of loss of efficiency.

EIC guest editorial

It’s no secret that the energy sector is often accused of being an obstacle to combating climate change rather than potentially being part of the solution.

The energy industry does account for more than two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, but there are steps that businesses can take to work more sustainably – and it doesn’t have to include pivoting to wind or solar. There are many ways that the energy sector can work to reduce its impact on the environment while also making itself more resilient for the future.

ATPI is a sector specialist for crew and corporate travel. With a global footprint of more than 160 offices and regional offerings throughout the Middle East, including Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Iraq, ATPI is here to support your travel by delivering efficiency, well-being, environmental sustainability, and cost optimisation in line with the key requirements for the energy industry now and in the future.

Implement a long-term strategy

Change does not happen overnight, and it will not happen at all unless a solid plan is in place. A comprehensive long-term sustainability strategy should aim to fundamentally alter your working style. This includes everything from the disposable cutlery used in your staff canteen to the way your senior team travels internationally. Implementing a strategy allows your company to think about diversification and potential new revenue streams like renewable energy, electrical charging stations, biofuels, hydrogen and advanced chemicals.

Harness the power of data

One of the most important tools the energy sector can use to become more sustainable is data. The industry’s increasing digitisation makes it easier for businesses to process data and respond to issues as they arise. Making data more accessible can also aid in influencing stakeholders and informing business decisions. Tracking and measuring your emissions could be the first step towards implementing more environmentally friendly ways of working and committing to reducing harmful gas emissions at all stages of the energy production process.

Review infrastructure

Aside from energy production, there are several aspects of the industry that can be optimised to help reduce the sector’s carbon footprint. Materials can be sourced from ethical and sustainable suppliers, equipment can be operated in the most energyefficient manner possible, and transport and delivery methods can be evaluated. Transportation can become more sustainable if loads are optimised, mileage is reduced, and newer, greener vehicles are chosen to help reduce emissions.

Offset your CO2 when travelling

Despite being one of the most significant contributors to global warming, the energy sector can become more environmentally friendly by offsetting its carbon emissions. Offsetting CO2 emissions is one way for businesses to accept responsibility for unavoidable emissions like those caused by travel. Every time your company offsets one tonne of CO2, one tonne of CO2 is removed from the atmosphere.

ATPI Halo can support your business to reduce its CO2 footprint by employing its Measure – Reduce –Offset methodology. The ATPI team will work with you to review your current travel emissions, implement a transparent reporting process, and help you plan future travel that is as sustainable as possible.

By partnering with Respira, one of the world’s leading CO2 project providers, ATPI can help you to offset the entire impact of your travel. ATPI Halo offers a varied offset portfolio, built in conjunction with some of the world’s leading carbon reduction project verifiers and aligned with the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Investigate CCS and methane management

The energy sector can take steps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions without completely abandoning the processing of fossil fuels. Utilising CCS, or carbon capture and storage technology, is one more sustainable way of working. This method entails capturing CO2 emitted during the industrial process, transporting it, and then drilling beneath the seabed to permanently store it underground. According to experts, widespread use of CCS could result in a 16% reduction in annual global emissions by 2050.

The energy sector is estimated to emit 110m tonnes of methane per year. Because a large portion of these emissions are caused by leaks, businesses that take steps to accurately monitor and record their methane emissions can quickly identify problems and reduce this unintentional output.

ABB: 300,000 tons in carbon emissions to be saved by autonomous oil and gas operations

ABB has published another of its ‘Energy Transition Equation’ reports that shows how industrial customers can reduce carbon emissions and manage the energy transition for a more sustainable future.

Based on nine months of research and modelling, the report highlights how early adoption and integration of automation, digitalisation and electrification technologies to enable autonomous operations can deliver savings of over 300,000 tons of carbon emissions per annum for offshore sites (approximately 25% reduction). This is the equivalent of removing 150,000 combustion cars from the road and is the same volume of CO2 responsible for five million tons of glacier mass lost each year.

The report also demonstrates how companies can realise production efficiencies of up to US$30m in annual savings, while delivering net revenue increases of up to US$120,000 thanks to autonomous operations.

A key part of this is redeploying companies’ offshore workforces, moving them from hazardous roles into new ones onshore. In doing so, employers can offer safer working environments, a better work-life balance and fill industry talent gaps by reskilling employees to support a data-led approach to oil and gas exploration and production.

In 2021, ABB reduced its own CO2 emissions by 39% as part of its Sustainability Strategy 2030 and expects to be fully carbon neutral by decade’s end. The strategy details how ABB will support its global customers in reducing their annual CO2 emissions by at least 100 megatons by 2030.

The report’s economic modelling was undertaken by independent economist Steve Lucas of Developmental Economics, in conjunction with ABB Energy Industries and supported with desktop research of academic and industry sources. ABB will publish reports focused on the power and chemicals markets this year.

DNV builds up high-voltage grid expertise with acquisition of Power System Dynamics

DNV, the global independent energy expert and assurance provider has acquired Power System Dynamics (PSD Consulting Engineering Pty Ltd), a grid consulting firm providing worldwide specialised services for high-voltage power systems from South Africa, recognised as a world-leading expert in grid dynamic behaviour modelling.

This acquisition, which follows collaboration on anterior projects, will be essential to DNV’s service offerings in the area of power system planning and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), supplementing its offers to the global power market with PSD’s international project references, global customer portfolio and world recognition on FACTS advisory services.

Though essential, the increasing share of sustainable power in the energy mix comes with challenges for transmission and distribution operators, due to the intermittence of the power flows generated from renewable sources. FACTS regulate alternating current transmission parameters, enhancing power flows controllability and increasing transfer capability across AC/DC grids.

This central role in ensuring voltage stability makes FACTS critical for the move towards the full integration of renewable power sources.

The acquisition of PSD occurs as DNV’s recently published Energy Transition Outlook report states that with an 83% share of the electricity system in 2050, renewables are squeezing the fossil share of the overall energy mix to just below the 50% mark in 2050. More grid connections will be needed as the global grid-connected electricity demand will grow by 2.7%/year from 2020 to 2050. Also, world transmission lines will increase from just over 6m circuit-kilometres in 2020 to almost 18.5m by 2050.

PSD’s main areas of expertise are power system analysis and design studies and investigations; the firm specialises in studies for generation integration, energisation, substations, lines, static volt-ampere reactive compensators (SVCs), reactive power compensation systems and general power equipment. Its knowhow has been carried out at all project stages, including techno-economic feasibility studies, conceptual studies, power system studies, engineering studies, preparation of technical specifications, procurement support, bid evaluation, witnessing of factory tests and of site acceptance and commissioning tests.

New Middle East regional hub positions

EthosEnergy for future growth

EthosEnergy, which specialises in services and solutions for rotating equipment in the energy and industrial sectors, has expanded its footprint in the Middle East as the region’s major players ramp up oil and gas investments amid concerns about global energy shortages. The company is investing over US$2m in a new engineering workshop in Abu Dhabi – a move which will enable EthosEnergy to better respond to the fast-growing rotating and oil and gas equipment market that is critical to the delivery of energy projects.

The move to the 86,000 sq ft facility at The Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICADII) more than triples EthosEnergy’s footprint in the region. Space restrictions at the previous workshop in Mussafah resulted in limitations to EthosEnergy’s service offering, but the extended workshop has significantly increased its capabilities.

The increased workshop space has enabled EthosEnergy to invest in new machinery, including a balancing machine to support rotating equipment such as compressors, steam turbines and pumps. Multiple new machines will allow for the production of highquality parts.

Additional yard space – eight times the size of the Mussafah site – will be used to create a regional hub for field service activity, increasing the number of available engineers and equipment and enabling EthosEnergy to strengthen its position as a single-source provider for rotating equipment.

EthosEnergy is now perfectly placed to rapidly respond to the growing market with enhanced capabilities to manufacture, maintain and repair oil and gas and rotating equipment in-region.

The site will also benefit EthosEnergy’s wider group companies, as it will store products and tooling which can then be transported onward to customers across the Middle East and beyond.

Kongsberg Digital launches new application to optimise drilling and well operations

Kongsberg Digital launched a new application at ADIPEC last year which enables operators in the energy sector to follow their key performance indicator (KPI) progress on drilling and well operations in real time.

Invisible lost time (ILT) – the difference between actual operational duration and a best practice target –is a known challenge when delivering wells. Without effective measurement, it is impossible to optimise best practice processes. KPIs are a proven method of increasing well delivery time efficiency and reducing costs through target-driven metrics. By using a proprietary algorithm, real time data and conditions-based logic can be integrated, analysed and applied to track bespoke KPIs and identify further areas for efficiencies across teams, processes and technology.

As an industrial software company, Kongsberg Digital provides SaaS solutions to enable asset-to-cloud data infrastructure, automatic contextualisation, capturing and aggregating quality data costeffectively and securely.

The KPI application is offered as part of the company’s innovative SiteCom platform, utilising its industrial work surface to provide a complete ecosystem for safer and reliable drilling and well operations, leveraging decades of experience and complex data to enable effective and efficient decision-making.

By combining crew information and operational reporting, Kongsberg Digital’s KPI application benefits from an additional layer of qualification and testing.

Siemens Energy developing gamechanging ammonia prototype

A Siemens Energy led consortium has begun work in Newcastle, UK on a new £3.5m ammonia cracker prototype designed to produce green hydrogen at industrial scale and help tackle climate change and reduce carbon emissions.

The ammonia cracker system will provide the potential to produce green hydrogen at scale, wherever and whenever it is needed. The system will be designed to deliver high-purity hydrogen, suitable for PEM fuel cell use, using FFI’s metal membrane technology (MMT) purification process. The MMT process is key to producing high-purity hydrogen from the ammonia cracking process. It selectively filters the hydrogen while blocking other gases, allowing it to be used as a fuel and converted as needed, at the time of re-fuelling.

Siemens Energy have proven experience of innovation with ammonia. The team previously led a collaborative project at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire. The £1.5m proof-of-concept facility showcased an ammonia-based energy storage system that turned electricity, water and air into ammonia without releasing carbon emissions. The ammonia is stored, before being used for electricity generation.

The UK government estimates that hydrogen could make up to one third of the UK’s energy mix by 2050 but there are challenges with hydrogen storage and transport that need to be addressed to make this viable. The £3.5m ammonia cracker prototype aims to help tackle these challenges.

The partnership is a collaboration between Siemens Energy, Siemens Energy Ventures, FFI, GeoPura and Innovate UK.

STATS technology comes of age with increase in Australian pipeline market frame agreements

Just one year on from establishing a new entity in Australia, pipeline technology specialist STATS Group (STATS), is looking forward to a bright future after securing frame agreements with some of the region’s largest Tier 1 operators.

A wider market understanding of the company’s patented BISEP® double block and bleed isolation technology has laid the foundations for growth which is being realised with contract wins and formal longterm strategic relationships.

STATS has been engaged on a large variety of Australasia projects since 2017 when it made its market entry with the hot tap isolation of a 10” LPG pipeline in Victoria on behalf of a major operator, using its double block and bleed BISEP tool.

Building on a reputation for innovation and responsiveness, in 2020 STATS was awarded a longterm call-off contract by Santos to cover its assets in Queensland and South Australia.

And last year STATS expertise was in demand when the company was commissioned to complete two 12” BISEP intervention projects in Darwin, four 14” BISEP workscopes in Perth, and in Victoria’s Bass Strait provided a range of hot tapping and remote isolation services on an offshore platform.

Encouraged by positive client support and multi-billion dollar investment programmes in Australia’s energy and infrastructure sectors, in 2021 STATS announced plans to set up a Perth-registered business with a planned investment of up to A$2m in equipment and support infrastructure.

This commitment is paying off with increasing numbers of oil and gas operators and contractors now opting to use STATS on pipeline intervention projects and through the establishment of frame agreements which are in place with a significant number of major gas distribution companies.

STATS global approach to expanding its geographic presence is to establish a strong local infrastructure with a permanent portfolio of equipment and personnel.

New and non-intrusive: the multiple applications of Atmos Eclipse

Atmos Eclipse is a non-intrusive piece of instrumentation that can be retrofitted quickly and easily to operational liquid pipelines to measure flow, pressure and temperature that works with Atmos International’s (Atmos) leak detection software, such as Atmos Wave Flow and Atmos Pipe.

Integrated in one ATEX package, Atmos Eclipse is designed for rapid deployment. With its clamp-on design, there is no need to drill, weld or cut the pipeline for tapping points to install Atmos Eclipse. It can collect and scan data at 60Hz (60 samples per second) in both shut-in and flowing conditions and measure bidirectional flow, the speed of sound for product change and transmission amplitude for pig detection.

Since it was launched, Atmos Eclipse has been installed on a range of pipelines in the world and already covers thousands of kilometres of pipeline networks for leak detection and theft detection. Here we outline some of its many applications.

Detecting multiple theft events

Atmos Eclipse is ideal for detecting smaller leaks and thefts. Its ability to measure at a 60Hz data acquisition rate means it enables online (real-time) theft detection to work effectively as part of a multi-method theft detection operation. An example of this can be seen in a theft detection project we completed for a multi-product pipeline in Europe. The customer’s pipeline spanned over 100 kilometres and transported a mixture of diesel, gasoline, heating oil and jet fuel, but their pipeline network had limited availability of locations where inline meters can be installed.

The customer was able to overcome this challenge with the installation of Atmos Eclipse because it can be retrofitted without affecting the pipeline integrity. As a result of implementing Atmos Eclipse along with Atmos Wave Flow, the following benefits were provided to the customer:

• The expense of intelligent pigging was no longer required to find the tapping points because they had a leak detection solution in place to accurately locate thefts.

• Over 12 theft events in total were detected, with one tapping point detected within a 40 metre location accuracy (0.3% of the pipeline section length).

• No additional network upgrades were needed because Atmos Eclipse achieved the instrumentation performance required.

To learn more about this example of Atmos Eclipse’s success in theft detection for one of our customers, read our case study on our website.

Powered by wind and solar energy for zero downtime

In pipeline networks where no power is available to support additional instrumentation, Atmos Eclipse is capable of functioning as a standalone leak and theft detection solution by being electrically isolated from the pipeline so it doesn’t affect the cathodic protection systems.

Atmos Eclipse was developed as an integrated solution that can not only work as part of a networked environment, but also be powered by solar and wind energy in the event of power becoming unavailable (90-250 Volts AC line or 24 Volts DC).

benefit from leak and theft detection support without the risk of downtime.

Remote operations, done accurately Pipelines in need of Atmos Eclipse are typically long-distance, in remote areas and lack the housing for essential leak and theft detection instrumentation, making site inspections difficult. Not only that, but sometimes remote operations are necessitated due to external factors like COVID-19.

The pandemic left many pipeline companies with reduced team sizes. Even though staff headcounts and the ability to perform site inspections were reduced to a minimum, many pipeline operators were still expected to deliver results on a pre-pandemic level.1

Instrumentation like Atmos Eclipse provides support in scenarios such as COVID-19 through its ability to collect onsite data by connecting to cellular, radio and standard communications to place data directly in contact with pipeline staff working offsite, in the control room or even from home.

As mentioned above, Atmos Eclipse can collect 60 data samples per second (60Hz), ensuring attention to accuracy, high sensitivity and speed while accommodating remote operations. In the event of communications outages, Atmos Eclipse has a built-in flash memory available to back up data and it’s also possible for pipeline operators to have access to a visual, customisable view of the data. Engineers can view data from the web GUI as a mapped layout of the pipeline with graphs that chart the network’s leak and theft detection results.

The multiple applications of Atmos Eclipse

www.atmosi.com/en

The software that supports Atmos Eclipse, like Atmos Wave Flow, leverages intelligent learning so that the leak detection solution takes data variations and meter errors into account. This means our leak detection is in a continuous state of improvement so that false alarms and uncertainty in the data are reduced while trust in the system increases and response times in the event of a leak or theft decrease.

Mitigating risks in high consequence areas

It’s nearly impossible to avoid a high consequence area (HCA) when building a pipeline network. Whether it be in an urbanised area or a location containing wildlife, it’s important to mitigate risks as much as possible to avoid a leak or theft escalating into a spill, rupture or explosion. Failure to do so can result in financial and reputational damage to the pipeline company as well as damage to the environment where the incident occurs.

With close attention being paid to HCAs, Atmos understands that some pipelines face specialised environmental and terrain challenges. Atmos Eclipse has been developed so that it can be implemented in a range of difficult scenarios, such as tight spaces and pipelines with a diameter from four inches up to 24 inches in some cases, providing leak and theft detection to the locations that need it most.

Atmos Eclipse can be configured in a range of options including slack pipelines, river crossings and urban areas to optimise sensitivity, accuracy and response times in areas where a leak or theft would have a more significant impact.

About Atmos International

We are deeply passionate about technology, innovation and customers, that’s why our purpose is to deliver the best pipeline leak detection and simulation solutions with the best customer service in the industry.

SABIC to set up Oman petrochemical complex

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation has signed an agreement with Oman’s state energy company OQ and Kuwait Petroleum International to set up a petrochemical complex in the sultanate. The project, which includes a steam cracker and a natural gas liquids (NGLs) extraction plant, will use feedstock from Oman’s Duqm refinery, which is run by a venture between OQ and KPI. The complex will manufacture petrochemical products for markets linked to the energy transition process, clean technology, mobility and construction, among others. Once complete, the refinery will have the capacity to process about 230,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

Dubai’s renewables reach 14% of total energy capacity

Dubai’s share of renewables in its total energy production capacity has reached 14%, as part of the Emirate’s ongoing efforts to reach its sustainability goals and transition to a green economy. Clean energy using photovoltaic solar power (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) now accounts for 2,027MW of the emirate’s total power production capacity of 14,517MW. Dubai aims to generate 25% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by 2030 and 100% by 2050 as part of its clean energy target. The UAE plans to invest Dh600bn in clean energy projects as part of its Net Zero 2050 strategy.

Regional update

This year got off to a great start with major announcements in the region where energy projects are concerned, particularly in Malaysia with the national oil company, PETRONAS , publishing its 2023-2025 Industry Activity Outlook which is full of information on upcoming business opportunities for the energy supply chain. The company also achieved final investment decision on a major LNG terminal project just before the start of the year.

EPCC contract awarded for the ZLNG power plant in Malaysia

Beach Energy has completed a pre-feasibility study on a carbon capture and storage (CCS) opportunity adjacent to its Victorian Otway Basin operations and is now moving into the next phase.

All in all, 2023 is looking like a predominantly positive year for the APAC energy industry.

In January, EIC APAC hosted our annual EIC networking breakfast at W Hotel. The welcoming address was delivered by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia HE Charles Hay, while the keynote speech for the event was delivered by Charlotte Wolff-Bye, chief sustainability officer from PETRONAS. This was followed by a presentation on the APAC market outlook by the EIC’s APAC regional analyst.

The event was sponsored by several companies including Bureau Veritas Group, IDM Group of Companies, and Bolt Industries Pte Ltd who showcased their latest products and services. The event enabled delegates to meet and greet key decision-makers from national and international energy companies, large EPCs, and other major players.

EIC APAC also organised our first webinar for 2023 on 19 January on opportunities in Australia’s energy sector. This webinar was organised as a precursor to EIC APAC’s participation in the meet the energy players networking event in Perth, in March 2023.

The webinar provided insights into the Australian energy sector, including the latest projects and developments, and opportunities in decommissioning, as well as Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation’s (MATRADE) initiatives on market developments and service export grants. Speakers included representatives from DIT Australia, Francis Norman, CEO and MD, Centre of Decommissioning Australia (CODA) and representatives from MATRADE.

In the assessment phase Beach will refine the prefeasibility study, focusing specifically on storage capacity, reservoir selection, injectability, integration and environmental approvals to establish a facility that can capture about 200,000 metric tons/year of CO2, an amount that would be greater than Beach’s current Otway Basin scope 1 and 2 emissions combined.

The next stage is anticipated to be completed by the end of June 2023. Later stages will examine the potential for the facility to become a regional hub for third-party CO2 sequestration.

India greenlights US$2bn incentive plan for green hydrogen sector

The government has approved US$2.3bn to support production, use and exports of green hydrogen, aiming to make India a global hub for the nascent industry.

The funding is a first step towards establishing the capacity to make at least 5m metric tons of green hydrogen by the end of this decade.

The aim of the funding initiative is to make green hydrogen affordable and bring down its cost over the next five years. It will also help India reduce its emissions and become a major exporter in the field.

US, Canada and Mexico agree on clean hydrogen development

The three countries have announced a joint agreement to develop a North American clean hydrogen market in the wake of the North American Leaders’ Summit (NALS) held earlier in January. The agreement includes co-operation on research and development, cross-border hydrogen clusters, safety codes and standards, green freight corridors as well as integrated maritime operations. These pledges are part of a bigger commitment that also includes the reduction of methane emissions, installation of EV chargers along crossborder motorways in addition to land and ocean conversation, among other measures.

Maine lease sale attracts interest from OFW developers

Avangrid, Hexicon, Mainstream Renewable Power, TotalEnergies and Pine Tree Offshore Wind have submitted nominations of areas of interest in the Gulf of Maine for the development of offshore wind projects. The nominations were submitted to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) following a Request for Interest (RFI) issued in August. The RFI is part of the process of designating Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) in preparation for an offshore wind lease sale scheduled to take place in 2024. BOEM is seeking further feedback with a new round of consultations for the area, which will feature floating offshore wind developments due to its geographical features.

The Rio office is excited to announce the hiring of two new interns: Matheus Vieira joined the business intelligence team as a SupplyMap intern and Caleb Santos will be supporting us as an EIC Inform intern. We are looking forward to supporting the growth of our members in the region.

On 15 February we are planning to focus on Gas to Power in the Breakfast in Rio event series, this time partnering up with Eneva. Eneva is one of Brazil’s largest integrated energy generators. It operates not only with the exploration and production (E&P) of natural gas but also in the supply of energy solutions. Its producing assets are located in the states of Maranhão (the Parnaíba and Itaqui complex), Ceará (Pecém II and Termofortaleza), Sergipe (UTE Porto de Sergipe I) and Roraima (Jaguatirica II), securing 6% of Brazil’s thermal power generation. The presentation will be gives by Peter Sakuragui, design and procurement processes. Places are still available to join us on this initiative.

Solar overtakes wind in Brazil

Solar power has surpassed wind and is now the second primary source of electricity in the Brazilian power matrix, with 23.9GW of installed capacity.

According to the Brazilian Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR), this technology has brought over R$120bn (US$23.4bn) of investments to the country over the last 10 years and prevented 33m tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere.

Considering the decrease in costs for the development of solar projects, industry sources believe that this segment will surpass hydro power and become the top source of electricity in Brazil’s power matrix by 2050.

We are also excited to have Ocyan as speaker in the Breakfast in Rio event series talking about Offshore Services: OPEX and ABEX Opportunities on 22 March, with a presentation given by Jorge Mitidieri, Ocyan’s executive vice president. Ocyan is a company that provides solutions for the upstream offshore oil and gas industry in Brazil and abroad. The company’s fleet comprises five drilling units and two FPSO (floating, production, storage and offloading) vessels. It also develops SURF projects, manufactures and installs subsea equipment, and provides offshore maintenance services. In December 2022, Ocyan announced the winning of three valuable contracts with Petrobras.

If you’re interested in boosting your company’s presence at these events, our events team has crafted special sponsorship packages that will surely suit your demands. Please, feel free to reach out to rio@the-eic.com

We are thrilled to announce that we are moving forward with the overseas delegation to Guyana on 18-21 April 2023.

ANP to revisit LNG regulations

Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency (ANP) will hold a public consultation process to review the regulatory framework for the handling of bulk LNG. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the development of small-scale LNG projects, as current regulations date back to the turn of the century and do not consider current technologies. Brazil has seen a variety of ‘virtual gas pipeline’ projects in recent years, which entail the development of modular LNG liquefaction and regasification facilities combined with a fleet of trucks equipped with cryogenic tanks.
